Attendance MA*TTERS
How can attendance affect progress?
Look at Progress 8 score & average GCSE
grades
Anything above 0 is positive and 0.5 very good progress which is over
half a grade on average better than targets across all subjects
0-0.5 Good +0.5 and above outstanding
Anything below 0 is negative and below -0.5 is very concerning and
shows target grades not achieved in many subjects
-0 and below

Learning Conversations
The aim of the conversations are;
• Reflection and expand student capacity to learn
• Identify what hasn't worked and eliminate those barriers to student learning and progress
• To identify the way forward and the strategies needed to achieve this
• To set goals and monitor the pathway to achieving them
In addition students reflect on their
cycle report and identify subjects
they have made progress in and
why (WWW).
Then identify what improvements
they need to make for the next
cycle (EBI).
Students can typically expect;
• Year 11 = 1½ - 2 hours per night

Mrs Middlemass – Faculty Leader of English
‘There can be no more important subject than English in the school curriculum. English is a pre-eminent world language, it is at the heart of our culture and it is the language medium in
which most of our pupils think and communicate. Literacy skills are also crucial to pupils’ learning in other subjects
across the curriculum.’

• Go back to previous skills/topics to interleave learning.
• Encourage memory skills and retaining of information
• PPEs in year 11 will assess texts taught in year 10 (to mimic the exam!)
• Provide a parents’ workshop focusing on reading skills
What can parents do to help across BOTH GCSEs?
• Encourage your son/daughter to read as much and as widely as possible
• Books, newspapers, magazines, leaflets through the door – discuss texts around the house.
• Buy newspapers and pick an article – ask them to highlight the important information from the text
• Encourage them to attempt as many papers/questions as they can
What should students be doing?• Respond to feedback from their class teacher
• Take personal responsibility for their own learning –if they’re stuck, speak to their teacher
• Get used to the coursework, speaking & listening and exam mark schemes – self-assess their own work before handing it in to be marked
• Improve on past papers/questions
• Practise, practise, practise
