Assessment and Reporting

• At the end of year 2 children are assessed as working towards, working at and working at greater depth in relation to the Year 2 expectations of the new curriculum.

• The current curriculum sets high expectations, which all schools work hard to achieve.

• The year 2 SATS which all children take in the Summer Term work alongside teacher judgement which is reported to parents at the end of the academic year.

Scaled Scores

What is meant by ‘scaled scores’?

• It is planned that 100 will always represent the ‘national standard’.

• Each pupil’s raw test score will therefore be converted into a score on the scale, either at, above or below 100.

• The scale will have a lower end point somewhere below 100 and an upper end point above 100.

• A child who achieves the ‘national standard’ (a score of 100) will be judged to have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests.

• A child who achieves a significant score above 100 (which is determined each year) is deemed to be exceeding.

How we are helping your child prepare for the SATS?

• Quizzes – you might here you child talking about quizzes that we do –these are sets of questions that we might do at the end of a lesson or at the start – these often are in the form of SAT questions.

• We are working through Reading comprehensions together as a class –we read them together and then answer the questions.

• Maths – we are doing arithmetic questions in the form of quizzes–which they enjoy to help them practise the different methods they can use.

• We are giving them lots of opportunities to show their good writing.

• We are working on their extra spellings in daily sessions which we do in lots of fun ways.

SATS Week at MSJ

• The SATS are in May – we don’t tell you or them the week it will be so they don’t panic!

• We make it very relaxed.

• They do them in small groups – those who need 1:1 support because they have an IEP or other identified reasons will be provided for.

• We do not have a time limit like year 6 – we can do them in small chunks and take breaks where needed.

• They are spread over the week and we make sure the afternoon sessions are fun and relaxing for the children – we also have treats to help them through the week.

• We can read the maths reasoning paper and grammar paper to the children but we cannot read the reading paper to the children.

Reading

The Reading Test consists of two separate papers:

• Paper 1 – consists of a combined reading prompt and answer booklet. The paper includes a list of useful words and some practice questions for teachers to use to introduce the contexts and question types to pupils. The test takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, but is not strictly timed.

• Paper 2 – consists of an answer booklet and a separate reading booklet. There are no practice questions on this paper. Teachers can use their discretion to stop the test early if a pupil is struggling. The test takes approximately 40 minutes to complete, but is not strictly timed.

• The texts will cover a range of poetry, fiction and non-fiction.

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar

This year, the Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar test will be optional for all Year 2 classes. Your child’s school may still administer the assessment in order to inform their teacher-assessed writing judgements.

The test consists of two separate papers:• Paper 1: Spelling - pupils to spell 20 missing words within a test booklet.

The test is expected to take approximately 15 minutes to complete, but is not strictly timed.

• Paper 2: Grammar, Punctuation and Vocabulary - a combined question and answer booklet focusing on pupils’ knowledge of grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Pupils will have approximately 20 minutes to complete the questions in the test paper, but it is not strictly timed.

Mathematics

Children will sit two tests: Paper 1 and Paper 2:

• Paper 1: Arithmetic - lasts approximately 20 minutes (but this is not strictly timed). It covers calculation methods for all operations.

• Paper 2: Reasoning - lasts for approximately 35 minutes, which includes time for five aural questions. Pupils will still require calculation skills and questions will be varied including multiple choice, matching, true/false, completing a chart or table or drawing a shape. Some questions will also require children to show or explain their working out.

How can you help your child?

• Don’t make them do them in test conditions.

• Break them up into small chunks.

• Do them together – make it a challenge with your child – who can find the answer first!

• Bribery works wonders! Little treats, biscuits, rubbers etc!

• Reading – five times a week is still important – the aim for a year 2 child is to be fluent reader who can answer questions about what they read. We have been teaching them scanning to help them find key words in what they are reading.

• Writing – continue to work on your child’s handwriting. We encourage a neat cursive script when writing sentences. Presentation is very important.

• Grammar – go on a noun hunt on the way to school, act out verbs as you are walking to school, find adjectives to help describe the nouns.

Page 21: Welcome to the Year 2 SATS Information Evening th April 2018

• Maths – practising 10, 5, 2 and 3 times tables are important –make them fun.

• Use the help sheet when completing the tests together so the children are using the right methods particularly in the arithmetic test.
