In Last weekend’s Gospel (Mt. 10,37-42) Jesus reminded us that if we do not love Him more than all our dear ones in this world, we are not worthy of Him. This is a blunt reflection of our very life itself. It is a process of leaving behind and going forward. As we grow, we leave behind all that are very dear to us, to reach somewhere, to accomplish something, and to meet someone who will give us a sense of fulfilment to our life. Children love their parents and siblings very dear, but they go forward to encounter the life long partner whom they learn to love more and leave behind other intimacies that prepared them to love more the one they encounter.

This is very true about our spiritual life as well. We are all sojourners. This life prepares us to reach heaven and to encounter God. God sent Jesus as our Savior. He has en-lightened us on how to gain victory over the world and maintain our focus on our salvation. If we know Him, love Him, and serve Him in this life the encounter will be exciting. This implies developing a personal relationship with Jesus while we are this journey to Him. There rare three factors Essen till to every relationship. - there must be an emotional intimacy. This is true in every relationship. If Couples do not develop such an intimacy, though they have a lot of business and excitements in their life at the end they will feel empty. The marriage fails miserably. If we do not have an emotional intimacy with Jesus, our prayers do not connect us with Him. We have to train our children to love Jesus and pray from the heat as we do ourselves.- there must have a cognitive surrender to the beloved. People keep on arguing and fighting because they will not yield or let go of their convictions and accept the other person’s idea. When Jesus told the disciples to cast the net on the starboard side after their failed nightlong hard work (Jn.4-6), their experience and lifelong wisdom did not prevent them from yielding. Such a readiness is essential for a smooth human relationship. This leads to the next stage,- there must have a mutual loyalty. Each one will defend the other in every situation and give credit to the other in every victo-ry. If we claim Jesus and proclaim Him as our Lord and Savior here in this life, Him will claim us before the Father. This personal loyalty to the Lord is the essential mark of a true disciple.

When Jesus wants us to love Him more than all our dear ones in our lives, to be worthy of Him, we have to practice this emotional intimacy, cognitive surrender to do what is pleasing to Him always, and develop a personal loyalty to always CLAIM AND PROCLAIM HIM AS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. This is how we grow in our spiritual journey every day.

We have to train our children intro process very early in their lives. God bless you all.

From the Pastor’s Desk / Del Escritorio del Padre

OUR COMPLIC@TED LIVES We live in an age and a society that has never been more educated or had a higher standard of living, yet never have we carried as much debt. Many are living be-yond their means. We have so many re-sources and time-saving devices at our hands, yet our lives are more complex than ever. While many people may not engage in extreme manual labor we rarely escape our jobs. Many are connected through phones and constantly receive calls, texts, and emails. Others spend hours in traffic on their daily commutes or pack on the frequent flyer miles. We spend hours binge-watching our favorite shows. Many children are accustomed to being in front of a screen all the time and no longer know how to play creatively. The statistics for those who continue to leave the Church and all forms of organized religion also continue to rise. While there is no such thing as a “good old days” to return to, there was something to be said for sleeping soundly after putting in a good day’s work, and for a family gathering around the table for a shared meal. For many, this model for eucharist rarely exists. Jesus knows and feels our pains, and calls out, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION SAINT MARIA GORETTI (1890-1902)

July 6

Does anything match a mother’s pride in her children? First Communions, confirmations, graduations, weddings: how these delight a mother’s heart! Imagine, then, Assunta Goretti, the only mother ever to attend her child’s canonization! In poverty-stricken rural Italy, widowed Assunta tended fields for the Serenelli family, whose eighteen-year-old son, Alessandro, propositioned her barely twelve-year-old Maria; then, when she resisted, crying, “It is a sin! God forbids it!” he stabbed her fourteen times. As she lay dying, Maria assured the attending priest, “Yes, I forgive Alessandro! I want him to be in Paradise with me someday.” Imprisoned, unrepentant, Alessandro changed after dreaming that a radiant Maria had offered him fourteen lilies. “I’ve kept my promise,” she smiled. “You’ll be here with me someday.” Upon release, he rushed to beg Assunta’s forgiveness. “Jesus has forgiven you,” she replied, “my Maria, too. How can I refuse?” Next morning, mother and murderer walked arm in arm to church and knelt side by side for Communion. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SHARE THE BURDEN

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). These words of our Savior seem to be in stark contrast to the previous chapter from the same Gospel, when we were told that if we do not take up our crosses, we are not worthy of Christ. Connecting these two messages might help us on our faith journeys. Being a follower of Christ surely means that we must embrace the cross, in its mystery of both suffering and triumph. This is something that we need not do alone, for the burden is often too heavy for us to carry by ourselves. Who, then, do we turn to? We can turn to the Body of Christ—the community of disciples gathered for worship. When we find the burden too heavy, let us remember that we can share that burden with our Christian sisters and brothers, who can help bring us rest. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

¿A quién volcarnos entonces? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Adopting St. Joseph Traditions in the Home

Individuals and families will choose to observe these devotional times in diverse ways. Regardless of the demands of your state of life or busy schedule, simply being aware of these devotions of Holy Mother Church can give us a “lens” through which to view the workings of God’s grace in our daily lives.

On a practical level, resources like The Little Oratory: a Beginner’s Guide to Praying in the Home by David Clayton and Leila Marie Lawler (Sophia Institute Press, 2014) can be helpful for sanctifying everyday life with a liturgical rhythm, thus making the family home a place of prayer in union with the Holy Family.

The Year of St. Joseph in the Diocese of Charlotte is an ideal time to “go to Joseph” for all the help we need to be holy. Even small details like adding the invocation, “St. Joseph, pray for us!” following grace before meals, marking the top of your notepad or homework assignment with “JMJ”, or setting an alarm on your phone to spend a moment with the holy Patriarch can be effecti-ve reminders of the closeness of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
