WELCOME TO WORSHIP!
No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey,
you are welcome in this United Church of Christ congregation.
Large-print bulletins, hearing devices, and cough drops
are available from the ushers.
Nursery and pre-school care is available during worship if you wish.
God is calling you today, but probably not on your cell phone!
Please remember to put it on vibrate if you are expecting an emergency call.
ALL are welcome to this time and place of worship.
Know that in this space you are welcome as you are, for who you are.
Together we celebrate all of God’s children – young, old and in-between;
male, female and in-between; gay, lesbian, straight and in-between;
the assured, the doubting, and the in-between;
the optimistic, the cynics, and the in-between;
the foolish, the wise, and the in-between.

*HYMN In Christ There is No East or West
*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE
Leader: We recognize Christ's great mandate for inclusion, celebrating and giving
thanks for the diversity in which God created us, each in God's image and
loved by God. In this spirit, our family of faith declares itself to be an
Open and Affirming, a Just Peace, and a Sanctuary Church, welcoming
and affirming all people as children of God regardless of race, cultural
heritage, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, immigration status,
gender identity, socioeconomic status, or religious tradition.
Let us embrace our differences and welcome the stranger and the familiar by
saying, “The peace of Christ be with you.”
People: And also with you.
You are invited to share greetings of welcome and peace with those around you.
All children pre-K through 5th grade wishing to attend Sunday School
are invited to exit to the Fellowship Hall during the passing of the peace.

MUSICAL INTERLUDE (Sung)
We will sing several times as we prepare to receive the Word.
Bless the Lord, my soul, and bless God’s holy name.
Bless the Lord, my soul, who leads me into life.
CONTEMPORARY LESSON Prayer © Jan L. Richardson
Liza Roles Fotso, reader
To your table you bid us come.
You have set the places, you have poured the wine,
and there is always room, you say, for one more.
And so we come.
From the streets and from the alleys we come.
From the deserts and from the hills we come.
From the ravages of poverty and from the palaces of privilege we come.
Running, limping, carried, we come.
We are bloodied with our wars, we are wearied with our wounds,
we carry our dead within us, and we reckon with their ghosts.
We hold the seeds of healing, we dream of a new creation,
we know the things that make for peace,
and we struggle to give them wings.
And yet, to your table we come.
Hungering for your bread, we come; thirsting for your wine, we come;
singing your song in every language, speaking your name in every tongue,
in conflict and in communion, in discord and in desire, we come,
O God of Wisdom, we come.

SUNG PRAYER RESPONSE
THE RECEIVING OF OUR GIFTS, TITHES, AND PLEDGES
SCRIPTURE LESSON Psalm 133 In Spanish
Ruth Nunez, reader
How very good and pleasant it is
when kindred live together in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head,
running down upon the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
running down over the collar of his robes. It is like the dew of Hermon,
which falls on the mountains of Zion.
For there the LORD ordained his blessing, life forevermore.
Friend, listen. God is still speaking.
Thanks be to God!

THE MORNING MESSAGE
The Rev. Dr. Laurinda Hafner
ANTHEM OF PREPARATION The Table Chris Tomlin
The Chancel Choir
THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION
Our table is wide-open to all who desire a closer relationship with God no matter your
age, gender, station in life, sexual orientation, or faith tradition. We use grape juice and
have gluten free bread available so that all may come freely to the table.
INVITATION
Leader: Christ invites us all to this Holy Feast.
As we gather this morning,
we remember our sisters and brothers
from above and below the equator,
from the North and from Down Under,
from every time zone around the globe.
As today's sunlight inches across land and sea
Christians gather to celebrate their place in God's family.
All are invited and all are welcome.
PRAYER OF PREPARATION
Leader: To prepare ourselves to partake of this Holy Meal, let us pray:
People: Healing God, we come before you
broken, yet seeking wholeness,
isolated, yet seeking community,
complicated, yet seeking simplicity,
overwhelmed, yet seeking grace:
All: God, we yearn for the healing you promise.
Leader: God of Justice, we come before you
selfish, yet seeking a generous heart,
proud, yet seeking humility,
often prejudging, yet seeking justice:
All: God, we yearn for the justice you promise.
Leader: God of Peace, we come before you
afraid, yet seeking assurance,
agitated , yet seeking serenity,
angry, yet seeking a forgiving heart:
8
All: God, we yearn for the peace you promise.
Leader: Knowing that through Christ
all things are made new,
we come to this communion table
to be recreated through the bread and cup,
and to be renewed in our faith and commitment.
All: God, we offer ourselves to renewal through you even as we pray the
prayer you taught us…
THE LORD’S PRAYER As translated in the New Zealand Prayer Book
Eternal Spirit Earth-Maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver, source of all that is and that shall be,
Father and Mother of us all. Loving God, in whom is heaven. The hallowing of your
name echoes through the universe! The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of
the earth! Your heavenly will be done by all created beings! Your commonwealth of
peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth. With the bread we need for
today, feed us. In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us. In times of temptation
and test, spare us. From the grip of all that is evil, free us. For you reign in the glory of
the power that is love, now and forever. Amen.
BLESSING OF THE ELEMENTS
Leader: God, may this bread connect us more closely with you
and with our neighbors near and far.
All: Bless this bread, we pray.
Leader: May this fruit of the vine remind us
of the inter-connectedness of people around the world.
All: Bless this cup, we pray.
Leader: May this simple meal bring us into union with you,
your people and your world
united in the One Body of Christ. Amen.
PROCLAMATION

COMMUNION MUSIC For Everyone Born Brian Mann/Tom Trenney
The Vocal Ensemble with Sarah Huesman, cello
For everyone born, a place at the table, for everyone born, clean water and bread,
A shelter, a space, a safe place for growing, for everyone born, a star overhead.
Refrain:
And God will delight when we are creators of justice and joy, compassion and peace:
Yes, God will delight when we are creators of justice, justice and joy!
For woman and man, a place at the table, revising the roles, deciding the share,
With wisdom and grace, diving the power, a system that’s fair.
Refrain
For young and for old, a place at the table, a voice to be heard, a part in the song,
The hands of a child in hands that are wrinkled, for young and for old the right to belong.
Refrain
For everyone born, a place at the table, to live without fear, and simply to be,
To work, to speak out, to witness and worship, for everyone born, the right to be free!
Refrain
Cello Music
Sarah Huesman, cello
*PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
ALL: We thank you, God, for inviting us to this table. Strengthen our faith,
increase our love and forgiveness for one another, and let us show
forth your praise in the lives we live; through Jesus Christ. Amen
*CLOSING HYMN Let There Be Peace on Earth
Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be.
With God as Creator, we are family.
Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony.
Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now.
With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow.
To take each moment, and live each moment, with peace eternally.
Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

STEWARDSHIP GATHERINGS: SIGN UP TODAY!
The Stewardship Team, thinking about this year’s 500th anniversary of Martin Luther
nailing 95 theses to the door of the Wittenberg Cathedral calling for change in the church,
wondered what changes you as members of Gables UCC would nail to our giant wooden
doors. So they invite you to have your own Martin Luther moment by attending one of
the many sessions offered throughout August and September and share with them what is
important to you about the church and your dreams for it in the future.
