December Trial Exams

• Y11 Students will have a week of trial exams

• w/c 14th December

• 2 exams a day on some days

• It is an intensive 2 weeks but we have to balance this with lesson time.

• Feedback from previous Y11 has been positive but they suggested the change to before Christmas.

• Exam timetables will be given out.

• We will use these grades for Sixth Form and College Applications.

GCSE Summer Exams

• These begin mid-May and end late-June.

• Students will need to be in school at 8:35 for morning exams and 1:35pm for afternoon exams.

• There will be clashes and multiple exams on one day.

• Exam timetable set by boards…not us.

• We do our best to reduce the stress caused by clashes.

• Revision Evening will be held nearer the time.

Study Leave

• Date TBC

• When the final exam timetable is sorted we look at the best date.

• Generally students stay in school for the first few weeks of exams.

• They then get study leave but must come in for revision sessions.

• We try to put revision sessions on in the morning for afternoon exams, and in the afternoon when students have a morning exam the following day.

• Some departments like ‘breakfast club’ revision sessions.

Year 11 science exams – key info

• Triple science – 2 papers for each subject (6 total). Each exam is 50% of the course marks and is 1 hour 45 minutes in duration.

• Combined science – 2 papers for each subject (6 total). Each exam is worth 16.7% of the GCSE marks and is 1 hour 15 minutes in duration.

• One 6 mark question in each exam – need to write a side of A4 with little structure provided

• A calculator is needed for all 6 papers – even Biology!

• Combined Science students can not sit a combination of entry tiers. Triple Science students have to sit the same tier for each subject

Things to do at home

• Print out the specification – highlight the different content both for exams and for understanding

• Log onto SAM Learning – check tasks complete

• Put the revision timetable in the kitchen

• Check revision guides

• Read through flash cards

• Support doesn’t have to just be ensuring students are revising at home – although that might be a large part of it!

Reminders: The Key Changes

• Students complete all of their exams at the end of the course in May/June 2018.

• There is no coursework; grades for both English Language and Literature are determined by examination performance only.

• The English Literature exams are now closed book.

• Students will be graded on a 1-9 system.

• The exams are not tiered; questions will increase in order of difficulty in English Language and are differentiated by text choice in English Literature.

English Language : Key Information

• Paper 1 is 1 hour 45 minutes in length.

• Paper 2 is also 1 hour 45 minutes in length.

• Both papers are evenly weighted, each worth 50% of the overall marks for GCSE English Language.

• Students also have to complete a “spoken language task”. They will be asked to present a formal presentation which may be recorded. This is a separate endorsement and is worth 0% of the overall GCSE.

Students have already covered Paper 1 in its entirety and Paper 2 Section B. Paper 2, Section A will be studied from November, and the

Spoken Language task will be conducted in January.

The ‘Intensive’ Revision Programme

• From January 2018, when all areas have studied, we begin an intensive revision programme in English in preparation for the exams in May and June.

• This comprises of:• Weekly assessments in timed conditions.

• Teachers marking and returning these assessments in four days.

• Where students perform below national expectations (and in some instances target grade) they will be ‘invited’ to attend a revision session after school to work on specific areas with a member of the English team.

• Where students do need to attend revision sessions, a text message will be sent home 24 hours prior to alert you to this.

• Two further mock exams that take place in the hall to give students a better feeling of how to deal with timings as the exams are much longer than other subjects.

Key changes from the existing specifications

• Introduction of new content

• Additional content in the foundation tier and higher tier - 33%, with a lot of the content coming from Further Maths and As Level. More content in Foundation from previous Higher exams.

• New assessment objectives which will have a greater degree of difficulty – i.e. EXAMS ARE GETTING HARDER.

• More formulae needs to be known, reduction in the formulae page, hence more things to remember.

• Proposed changes from students having to continue their studies with Maths until 18 years old or until they have a C at GCSE, which ever comes sooner. Current changes propose raising the age to 21 years old or until they get their C.
