Biblical Principles

God’s people are commanded to teach their own children (Deut 6:5-8)

5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. (Deut 6:5-8)

We are here to reconcile God’s people to their children (Mal 4:6)

The Church is to quip God’s people for God’s work (Eph 4:11-12)

Pray for spiritual wisdom for our ministry partners (Col. 1:9-10)

God’s people including children are not to be ashamed of the gospel and our Lord (2 Tim 1:8)

6 He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction. (Mal 4:6)

11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up. (Eph 4:11-12)

9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, (Col 1:9-10)

8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. (2 Tim. 1:8)

Be courage and continue His work on earth for He is with us always, even to the end of the age (Matt. 28:19-20)

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matt 28:19-20)

Fundamental Questions

What is Christianity?

What is Christian Education?

Page 11: Welcome Volunteer Training 2013-2014

What is Christianity?

The religion derived from Jesus Christ, based on the Bible as sacred scripture, and professed by Eastern, Roman Catholic, and Protestant bodies (Merriam-webster)

The religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah, sent by God. They believe that Jesus, by dying and rising from the dead, made up for the sin of Adam and thus redeemed the world, allowing all who believe in him to enter heaven. Christians rely on the Bible as the inspired word of God. (Cultural Dictionary)

Page 12: Welcome Volunteer Training 2013-2014

Theological Framework

Christianity is all about God’s promise (Gen 3:15) And I will put enmity between you and the woman,

and between your offspring and hers;he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel. (Gen 3:15)

It is not about knowledge, but relationship between God & Man - it’s not about “what” but how you response?

Aware of distorted image - restored only by grace

through the power of the Holy Spirit Salvation is not merely for individual’s benefit (go to heaven), but

for God’s glory as a whole - our inheritance in Christ

To glorify Him means to be like Him, be His witness, and

be unified in His body 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45)

Page 13: Welcome Volunteer Training 2013-2014

What is Christian Education?

Education = the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life. (Dictionary.com)

Christian Education??

Page 14: Welcome Volunteer Training 2013-2014

Elements of Christian Education?

Student (knowing, experience & serving God)

Nature of Student - your expectation from children

Reason/judge or make choices - independently

Live out their faith - produce the fruit of the Spirit

Be equipped to serve - to contribute/teach others

Teacher

Theology/mindset - opened/closed? determines what and how he/she teaches

Teacher’s Role & Teaching style - determines the results of learning

Teaching & Learning Process

Foundation - Bible/Scripture - primary source - Highest Authority

Curriculum - content

Methods - effective way? teacher’s way or student’s way?

Page 15: Welcome Volunteer Training 2013-2014

Nature of the Student

Every child is unique - different challenges

Student’s learning ability & spiritual maturity differ from one another

Establishing an intimate relationship with God is crucial

Only through the power of the Holy Spirit can one produces the fruit of the Spirit

Page 16: Welcome Volunteer Training 2013-2014

Characteristics & Needs of Children

Physical - active & energetic

Mental - mental discovery

why, why, why? Only literal, no abstract idea/concept

Emotion - learning sharing/self control

Socially - Friendliness

Spiritual age-appropriate and relevant

parents are primary influence until 9 (peer pressure, values are questioned)

how (attitudes/actions) a subject is taught is more important than what (content/lesson)

Page 17: Welcome Volunteer Training 2013-2014

True Learning

Transforms life

Grow independently - go beyond

Ultimate goal - learn independently

think/reason/judge/make right choices independently

Vital to adapt to this fast changing world

Page 18: Welcome Volunteer Training 2013-2014

Teaching StylesMotivator - makes learning experience exciting/enjoyable - activities,

humor, satisfaction, relationship; content is not as important as the dynamics of the group

Manipulator - the source of truth - only one correct answer - freedom of

choice is discouraged

Inculcator - set of material that is essential - drill, memorization, testing

& repetition - facts are key to success - rewards given to those who grasp them - try until they get it “right”

Commentator - reports on information that others have gathered/taught

Facilitator - strive to make the difficult simple - freedom to explore - serves as a guide - different methods and aids are used to accomplish the task

Orchestrator - Teacher provides direction, but the students will do the learnings; individual needs/characteristic are considered

Page 19: Welcome Volunteer Training 2013-2014

Good shepherd never condemn, but has compassion on the lost (Matt 9:36)

Teachers are the ambassador of Christ who mediate between students and God (2 Cor 5:20)

Teacher’s Role

Only God, the Holy Spirit is the Teacher - we are just facilitators (John 14:26)

26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. (John 14:26)

20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. (2 Cor. 5:20)

36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. (Matt 9:36)

Teachers are to guide, inspire and facilitate the learning process rather than commanding or transferring information

Learn from the Scripture, not the teacher

Teachers are the shepherds, not the judges - Jesus came to seek for sinners, not the righteous (Matt 9:13)

13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”. (Matt 9:13)

Spiritual qualified - example

Methodologies

Begin & end with prayer - the Holy Spirit is the One who teaches both the teacher & the students

Help students to discover why & how rather than what!

Help students to develop self-confidence during the learning process

Asking questions (5W + 1H) - expose misconceptions & clarify message/truth

Make them think and learn independently

Encourage them to discover truth for themselves

Allow them to learn through their way, not our way!

Theological Framework

God’s BIG story of redemption Vs fragmented people & events

Moralities are not instructed through authorities - the fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,

faithfulness, gentleness, self-control) are naturally expressed through His power

Disbelief would never lead students to the Truth. Leading students

to Christ is the key to attain all knowledge

Only when children realized their identity in Christ,

can they have the right response to God

Page 30: Welcome Volunteer Training 2013-2014
