Continuity from 4-18

Queen’s Gate’sunique sellingpoint is its familyspirit – there is acloseness ofteachers, staffand girls. To thisday I am in touchwith the majorityof my peers fromboth the Juniorand SeniorSchools.”

Dr NazilaTourmadj (leaver 1999)

Queen’s Gate offers a continuity of educationfor girls from 4 –18. At all stages, we wantgirls to enjoy the many opportunities of Schoollife, take pleasure in learning and discovery, whilst developing their self-confidence in asupportive, nurturing environment. In 2007,our Junior School moved to its own newlyrefurbished buildings in 125-126 Queen’sGate, just a stone’s throw from the SeniorSchool, enabling effective sharing of resourcesand the Junior School to remain as an integralpart of Queen’s Gate, whilst having an identityof its own.

Our Junior School is lively and welcoming andan exciting place to learn. Strong emphasis isplaced on developing skills in numeracy andliteracy as well as nurturing individual skillsand talents. Music, Sport, Drama, Art, Designand Technology are all integral parts of thecurriculum and taught by specialist staff.Opportunities to learn French, German, Italian,

Spanish and Latin are also offered. The JuniorSchool makes good use of its own Sciencelaboratories, Art room, ICT room and an elegantand well-resourced library, whilst also visitingthe Gym in the Senior School. Clubs form animportant and popular part of Junior School life,at lunch-time and after School. Junior girls alsohave the opportunity to join the Early Morningsporting clubs, alongside the Senior girls.

In the first three years of the Senior School, ourcurriculum is broad and balanced, thusensuring that GCSE choices are made on thebasis of experience, personal interest andstrengths. At GCSE, all girls take the coresubjects of Mathematics, English Language,English Literature, at least one of the fourModern languages – French, Spanish, Italian,German – and a minimum of one of the threeseparate sciences. At A level, girls may choosefrom 28 subjects. All Sixth Formers are alsoexpected to follow a course in Careers andCommunication, take part in a Gamesprogramme and contribute to school life and the wider community.

Although now based in separate buildings, there are strong links between the Junior andSenior Schools, overseen by the Principal.Liaison and sharing of ideas and good practiceis encouraged amongst Senior and Juniorteaching staff, whilst opportunities are offeredfor Senior and Junior girls to work together, inClubs, activities and School trips. Senior girlsare welcomed in the Junior School as valuableassistants, and the younger girls very muchenjoy their company. The annual ChristmasCarol Service gives both Schools theopportunity to join together for this very special occasion.

Opportunities forteamwork, leadership—individual expressionSuccessful lives and careers depend on much more than just academic success. Wetherefore encourage and value opportunitiesfor team-work, leadership, taking responsibilityand showing an innovative and entrepreneurialspirit. There are many opportunities to takeresponsibility and show leadership as FormCaptains, Tour Monitors, Sports Captains or ina House position or as a Prefect. In both ourJunior and Senior Schools, we have a HeadGirl team, which assists staff with the smoothrunning of our School. All of our girls act as

excellent ambassadors at School events where they are always highly praised by ourvisitors. Sixth Form girls run clubs and alsooffer assistance as mentors, thus providingvaluable support to our younger pupils. At allstages, girls are encouraged to show initiativeand to arrange events and activities for others, both in School and outside.

Excellentpastoral careThe pastoral care system in both the Juniorand Senior Schools is based on concern for the individual. Queen’s Gate is a caringcommunity with a distinctive family feel andmuch time is spent at all levels in givingguidance and encouragement, through astructured and effective pastoral system.Eachgirl is assigned to a Form where her Tutoroversees her academic progress and generalwell-being, encouraging her to have an activebut balanced approach to school life. In theSenior School, the Heads of Lower School,Form IV, Upper School and Sixth Form play an important part in the pastoral care of thegirls in their section, liaising closely withsubject staff and tutors. All girls follow acomprehensive programme of personal, socialand citizenship education which anticipatesthe challenges and issues appropriate to eachage group.

In the Sixth Form, girls are assigned toindividual work tutors who monitor work and progress. Throughout the School, weencourage close involvement with parents, with regular opportunities for review of pupils’ progress through written reports orparents’ meetings. The Principal and othersenior staff are always happy to see parents by appointment.

Girls are also assigned to School Houses, withtwo Houses in the Junior School and four inthe Senior School. There is a variety of interhouse competitions throughout the year, whichgive girls the opportunity to work with othersfrom different years, whilst fostering a healthycompetitive spirit.

The quality ofpastoral care isexcellent andpupils’ welfare isgiven a highpriority.”

Beyond theclassroom—amulti-facetedcommunityAcademic work at all stages at Queen’s Gate isimportant, but our idea of education goes farbeyond the classroom. The destination of ourgirls is vital, but equally so the quality of theirjourney to that destination. We aim to produceconfident, self disciplined and motivatedyoung women who also enjoy and excel atmusic, drama, art, sport and outdoor pursuits. We encourage all our girls to pursue theirinterests and enthusiasms in the various clubsorganised at lunch time and before and afterschool. A variety of activities takes place eachday including photography, drama, film club, table tennis, fencing, yoga, climbing, jewelleryworkshop, running club, creative writing – toname but a few.

Our Challenge and Enrichment programme isdesigned to provide further opportunities forstimulus in a range of topics. The Wider Worldprogramme and the series of “InspiringWomen” talks allow girls to glimpse the worldbeyond Queen’s Gate through a range ofinspirational speakers. The QG Challenge, overseen by the Sixth Form, for younger girls, enables them to take pride in their manyachievements. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme and our Community Serviceprogramme are both thriving activities, givingour girls opportunities for self-discovery and

teaching valuable lessons in life skills. Weencourage our girls to take part in a variety of charitable events both in and out of School. We have supported Age UK for manyyears and organise an annual tea-dance forthe elderly as well as welcoming a group of local people for lunch each week, hosted by our girls.

School trips are an important extension to thecurriculum and each year, these include fieldtrips and curriculum visits, an annual Sportsleadership trip to Cornwall as well as theannual Remove activities trip to France.Wealso have a Biathlon training trip to Barcelonaand a ski trip each winter. Theatre trips occuralmost weekly, as well as visits to localmuseums and galleries and to Universities forlectures. At Queen’s Gate we are fortunate tohave an excellent location – the museums, the Royal Albert Hall and Hyde Park are all on our doorstep and we aim to make good use of them.

The richness provided by the extra-curricular provision and the dedication of both staff and pupils inorganising these activities is a strength of the School.”
