  • Where did this start? Budapest 2009: Flavia Pansieri, head of UNV, asks regions to mark the 10 th anniversary of the UNs International Year of Volunteers in 2001 November 2010: UNV, VOSESA and 20 partners from across southern Africa hold a strategy session to plan the conference 2010/11: 13 funders pledge support; 10 background papers researched; 50 speakers & moderators are secured; 7 site visits planned; 180 registrations 16 Oct 2011: A youth session marks the start of the conference proceedings.

  • Outcomes envisaged Stronger understanding about how volunteering and civic service contribute towards achieving the MDGs and sustainable development Support from representatives of SADC member states for a UNV resolution on volunteering that will be presented to the UN General Assembly on 5 December 2011 Steps towards the establishment of a variety of SADC regional voluntary service programmes
