A spiritual connection toAllah. We may be involved physicallybut neglect the spiritual connection toAllah. Allah emphasizes in the Qur’anthe importance of us being connected tohim, for us being God conscious. Thismeans whatever we do, wherever wego, it should be the way Allah expectsus to do. The way that Allah expects usto fulfill his rights and commands. Wemust always be in total submission toAllah as we can never tell when we willdie. We are humans and make mistakes.Allah understands that but expects us torepent. According to the Prophet(s.a.w.), a person who repents sincerelyis forgiven and becomes as someonewho did not sin. Allah knows that weare forgetful, but he is willing to forgive.Allah is Al-Ghaffur, Al-Raheem. Whilehe is forgiving, we must follow the com-mands of Allah lest we become the fol-lowers of Shaytaan. We let Shaytaanmislead us. It is important that we un-derstand the system that Allah has put

in place for us. Just as Allah created thebody and created food to keep the bodyhealthy, he has similarly created the sys-tem to keep our soul healthy. Hence weshould always be in the remembranceof Allah. It does not only make dhikr butit means our actions should be in con-nection to the remembrance of Allah.Allah (s.w.t.), in Surah Taha, Chapter20 vs 124: “And whoever turns awayfrom my message, for him, his lifestylewill be a very frustrating one” Does thisnot sound familiar? It is widespread inthe ummah today but a good believerwith faith in Allah isn’t supposed to bestressed. Allah says in the Quran thatthe people who do what Allah expectsthem to do will find peace and tranquil-ity in their hearts. When Allah has or-dained a way in the Quran and sunnahbut we choose to do things our own way,we must face the consequences. Alsoin this verse: “and that person will beraised on the day of Qiyamah, blind”Wecomplain of everything but we don’twork on our own imaan. We go to some

masjids where the poor are begging out-side and inside the masjid, the rich arebegging. We are not in the line of Allahand live the frustration of not beinghappy. Our spirituality has deteriorated.We only live and pray for ourselves.Chapter 13 vs 28: “By the remembranceof Allah do hearts find rest” We teachchildren that wealth gives happiness asopposed to loving Allah and his Rasool(s.a.w.). They grow up knowing theprice of everything but without tranquil-ity and peace. On the flip side to all ofthis, in different parts of Surah Yunus,Chapter 10: “Certainly the people whoare the friends of Allah, they will haveno fear, nor will they grieve.” “For themwill be glad tidings of happiness in thisworld and in the Hereafter. Allah doesnot go back on his words” Allah hasgiven us the answer. If we follow whathe says to do, he has promised us peace,happiness and joy in this world and thehereafter.

As we enter more deeply into the celebrationof High Holy Days of the various religioustraditions, we need to be keenly aware thateach tradition utilizes rituals/services that are

meant to draw us closer and closer to Our God. If we areauthentically attempting to draw closer to Our God, we will bechallenged to follow God’s Call, which is specific to each andevery one of us. May these most sacred times within our faithcommunities truly lead us to deeper and richer understandingof Our God and one another.

GOD’S CALL

It should be noted that every great reli-gion of the world provided protection offaith, life, reason, generation and prop-erty. According to Maliki school “publicinterest” is an independent source of law.

It is a means to protect the aims and objectives of the Shariah.The objectives of the Shariah are known through the Quran,the Sunnah, and Ijma. Any law which does not fulfill thepurpose of the Shariah is not valid. As it is designed to se-cure the ends of law, it cannot be excluded from the recog-nized sources of law. Nevertheless, it is not called qiyas. It istechnically called al-maslahah al-mursalah (public interestlet loose from the text). The reason for adopting this term isthat while Qiyas rests on some definite authority, Masalahrelates to the matters about which the Shariah is silent.Ahmed Hasan in his book “Analogical Reasoning in IslamicJurisprudence” writes “In his Shifa al-Ghalil al-Ghazali clearlydistinguishes between maslahah munasabah; the formerbeing seeking something useful, and removing something harm-ful; the latter being the preservation of an objective. But inhis al-Mustafa it seems that he identifies maslahah withmunasib. He remarks: “Originally maslahah is seeking utilityand removing harm, but we do not mean that by it, for seek-ing utility and averting harm are the objectives of people andtheir good lies in the acquisition of their objectives. ByMaslahah we mean preservation of the objectives of theShariah, and the objectives of the Shariah are five-fold.Anything which involves preservation of these five principles(usul khamsah) is maslahah and that which causes the lossof these principles is mafsadah and removing it ismaslahah……………..”. It is, therefore, evident thatmaslahah involves public interest or benefit for the Muslimsin general and the benefit is meant for all Muslims and not fora few persons.

to gain from fasting? And, how can we make the best ofRamadhan? What should we do to get the maximum benefit?“O You who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it wasprescribed to those before you, that you may learn taqwa, (self-restraint).” [2:183] Those of us who will be fasting, enjoy thesatisfaction that we are giving up our delicious food and drink,our leisure and amusement so that we can please our Lord andSustainer. Allaah SWT tells us in His Holy Book, all our otherduties concern the poor, the needy, our families and ourselves,but Fasting is for Allaah alone, and He rewards whom Hepleases. We must always bear in mind the purpose of our fast-ing. It is not only to stay hungry and thirsty. It is to be con-scious of Allaah SWT at all times. Fasting teaches us to tameour lower passions, al-nafs-al-ammara-bis-sow. This is thelower self that clings to the earth, and drags us towards all thehateful and shameful actions, envy, greed, sexual lust, jeal-ousy, anger, hatred, revenge…Fasting helps us to be disciplined.It helps us to strengthen our conscience, the higher self, whichis called al-nafs-al-law-waamah. This is the self-reproachingnafs, this is the higher self that constantly blames itself andseeks to put right all the errors and sins of the lower self.Throughout our lives, we struggle with this great Jihad, oftrying to control our desires and passions, so that our thoughts,our words and our actions are only good and pleasing to AllaahSWT. Once the Muslims returned from a battle, and ProphetMuhammad SAW said to them “You have completed the lesserJihad, now you must engage with the greater Jihad, which isthe struggle to control and purify yourself”. I pray that everyone of us will use this Ramadan as an opportunity to fight thismost important of all struggles, the Greater Jihad of takingcontrol of our lives, control of our lower passions and desires.This struggle to cultivate self-discipline is not only for Ramadan.It is a lifelong struggle. Shaitan will constantly offer tempta-tions and make our evil nature seem pleasing to us. Neverthe-less, we must be on guard, and we must remember what pleasesAllaah SWT. We must say, “A-oothu bil-laahi minashshaytaanir rajeem”: “I take refuge in Allaah from Shaytaan,the Cursed One”. We must constantly keep in mind that AllaahSWT will hold us to account for our actions. We do not wantto be among the losers, the ones whose end is hellfire. Wewant to be among the winners, the ones who will enter para-dise. We want to spend our lives, purifying our thoughts andwords and actions, so that when we die we have a purifiedheart and soul. We want our Ruh, our soul to be as pure andunblemished as the day when we were born.

Jesus was not getting his Message of the Gospel through to theJewish leaders, so they decided to confront him about healingon the Sabbath. They questioned him about his identity andstatus and his popularity upset them to the point where theywanted him dead. They slandered Mary and thought that shehad an affair and gave birth to Jesus, and that his miracle birthwas not real. When Jesus told them that God’s Last Messengerwhom he called ‘Ahmad’ in Aramaic (the language spoken byJesus) would come from the seed of Ishmael and not Isaac,they decided to set up the Romans to have him crucified. Theyknew from the Scriptures that crucifixion was a form of pun-ishment for criminals but not for prophets. So they plotted tokill him in this fashion rather than stone him to death. Theythought they killed him but Almighty God saved him from sucha horrific death, even though the Jews were bragging that theykilled Jesus, the son of Mary, the Apostle of God. Jesus wastaken up (the Ascension) and must return to Earth towards theend of time to complete his life, at which time he must die likeeveryone else. Only Almighty God is Eternal and will neverdie. The mystery surrounding Jesus defies logic and reasonwhich is why his mere existence has confounded Christiansand Catholics whose Foundation and Belief System is hingedon the Trinity (father, son and Holy Ghost) concept. I did notask if he was God since that question was too premature. In-stead I went on to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Iasked, “What was the ‘thing’ that appealed to the Arabs duringthe time of Prophet Muhammad?” Since she was unaware. Imentioned that it was ‘Poetry.’ Here is a man who could notread nor write reciting verses that are so poetic, they wereastonished - only to realize that it was Divine Revelation thatcontained a Message, and was not Poetry. The Arabs wereamazed when the Jewish people in Mecca and Medina recog-nized the verses as Revelation from Almighty God, and eventu-ally those verses were put in well-arranged stages and order -which we now refer to as the Holy Quran. Some Jews be-came Muslims while others refused to Believe. Then I asked,“Would you say that the Prophet Muhammad was God?” Shereplied, “No! He was a man.” Then after a brief pause, Iasked her if her Geography Teacher was better than her Mathor Science Teacher, or any other teacher. She replied, “No!They’re all teachers, they’re the same!” Then I remarked -Similarly, all Prophets who were teachers will be considered inthe same fashion and that is why we have been reminded andinstructed in the Quran “not to make distinctions among God’sMessengers,” even though they all had the same Message butplayed differed roles, and were given different gifts. Then Iasked her if Moses was greater than David or Jesus orMuhammad or even Abraham who was saved by God frombeing burnt in a huge furnace after being thrown into it.

A recent survey of the Muslim communityin the US found that almost 25% of Ameri-can Muslims are converts. However, onewould not guess that this was the case bylooking at our masjids. At best there may bea convert or two, and it is not uncommonfor someone to say the shahada, then disap-

pear. The reality is that our community grows every singleday, but many of these new comers do not feel comfortable inour masjids. Here are a few insights as to why this is the case,and what Muslims who were raised in Islam can do to help.1. Do not ask a convert to share their conversion story whenyou first meet.It is normal to be curious about how someone may have cometo Islam, but for many converts this is the most personal expe-rience of their lives and not something they would normallywant to share with everyone. Get to know them like you wouldanyone else, asking appropriate questions about their work,background, likes, etc. and leave the conversion story for atime when sharing personal information would be more appro-priate.2.Socialize with converts. When a new convert comes to amasjid it is common to experience a wave of excitement thatquickly fades. After everyone has asked about how they cameto Islam or shared their congratulations, often people will re-turn to their social group and speak in a language that the con-vert does not understand, leaving them alone. Many convertsstruggle with loneliness. Ramadan and Eid, a time of celebra-tion, is a time that leaves many converts feeling very alone.Please talk to converts in your masjids, include them in socialactivities, and invite them to celebrate Islamic holidays withyour families.3. Do not be suspicious.Another problem converts experience in masjids is suspicion.Many converts will be accused of not having sincere faith,pretending to be Muslim to get married, and even of beingspies for the government. Islam teaches us that only Allah swtknows what is in the hearts of people, and to not be suspiciousof others. Please do not say these things to fellow Muslims inyour community and speak up when you hear these things.4. Do not try to push a new Muslim into doing somethingbefore they are ready.Islam was revealed gradually over 23 years. Muslims todaycannot be expected to completely live Islam too quickly. Rec-ognize that it may take a new Muslim time to implement Islam,and do not respond harshly because they are not doing some-thing. One practice in particular that should take time is mar-riage.


Importance of DuasDaily & Especially

In Ramadan

The month of Ramadan is a very blessedtime of the year for Muslims. It is the monthin which we indulge in excessive worship

and constantly praise Allah God Almighty. Besides keepingfast in the proper manner, the other objective of this month isto repent to Allah SWT and try to gain His mercy, His for-giveness, His salvation from the fire of hell and to gain asmany blessings and rewards from Allah (SWT) as possible.One of the acts of worship we perform is Dua (supplication).Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “Dua (sup-plication) is worship” (Abu Dawud). We should make Duadaily throughout the year but in the holy month of Ramadan,Duas hold a greater value than the rest of the year. Hence,Ramadan is not only about fasting, rather it is also an increasein reciting the Holy Quran, praying Salaah and in making ex-tra Dua as well. Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran: “Andwhen My slaves ask you (O Muhammad SAW) concern-ing Me, then surely I am near. I answer the prayer ofthe supplicant when he calls to Me.” (Quran, 2:186),He also says, “Call on Me and I will answer yourprayer.” (40:60) and He says, “Therefore rememberMe, I will remember you. Give thanks to Me and re-ject Me not.” (2:152).From the above verses of Holy Quran, it is clear that AllahAlmighty loves those who remember Him and ask Him andHe listens to us and what we ask for and He answers ourDuas (at the best time). We should ask for everything nomatter if it is small or big from Allah (SWT). In the month ofRamadan, our Duas should increase daily. There are two spe-cial times when Duas are immediately accepted by Allah(SWT) in Ramadan; at the time of Iftaar (breaking the fast)and at the time of Suhoor (beginning the fast). The Sunnahway of making Dua is:1. Start by praising Allah (SWT)2. Send salutation upon the Prophet (SAW) at the beginningand just before ending your Dua3. Demonstrate humility and fear of Allah (SWT) while hav-ing high hopes that He will respond to your Dua.Ways of Increasing Acceptance of DuasIn the blessed month of Ramadan we can actually increaseour chances of having our Duas accepted by following thebelow mentioned ways of making Dua. Allah (SWT) out ofHis mercy and benevolence has specified specific times inthe day when He accepts Dua.

The Prophet(pbuh) explained inone Hadith thatRamazan is a monthwhose beginning is

Mercy; whose middle is Forgiveness andwhose end is Freedom from the Hellfire.This makes it a great time to ask Allah forHis Forgiveness. It’s also a wonderful timeto open our hearts and cleanse them ofgrudges and bitterness by forgiving oth-ers. What better way to seek this divineforgiveness then by forgiving those whohave wronged and hurt us? Just as weseek forgiveness from Allah, we mustlearn to forgive ourselves. When the ser-vant knowingly gives up the things andacts that nullify the fast, despite his abil-ity to reach them in secret, he gives in-deed strong evidence of his certain beliefthat Allah, the Almighty, watches over himin both his manifest and secret deeds.There is no doubt that in this kind of con-duct is a significant training to strengthenfaith in Allah.The Prophet (pbuh) said: “It is not per-missible for a Muslim to abandon hisbrother (or sister) for more than threedays, each of them turning away whenthey meet. The better of them is theone who gives the greeting of salaamfirst.” Forgiveness requires an extraor-dinary struggle against the bruised ego.And, the bigger the hurt, the more diffi-cult it is to forgive. Forgiving is giving upyour right to hate or hurt the person whohurt you. Hate hurts you physically, men-tally and emotionally. Forgiveness givesyou peace, tranquility and happiness. Dur-ing Ramazan, the doors of Allah’s mercyand forgiveness are open. Allah describedthe believers and said: “And those whoavoid the major sins and immoralities, andwhen they are angry, they forgive.”(Quran 42:37). How can we raise ourhands and ask Allah for forgiveness butnot be willing to forgive another human-being?The Prophet Muhammad said that Musa,the son of Imran once asked, “Oh my

Lord! Who is the most honorable of Yourservants? And He replied, the person whoforgives even when he is in a position ofpower”. Peace and blessings be upon theProphet. When he entered the city ofMakkah after the victory, the Prophet(pbuh), had in front of him some of hisstaunchest enemies. Those who foughthim for many years, persecuted his fol-lowers and killed many of them. Now hehad full power to do whatever he wantedto punish them for their crimes. It is re-ported that the Prophet (pbuh) asked them,“What do you think I shall do to younow?” They pleaded for mercy. “No blameon you today. Go, you are all free.”Subhan Allah, soon thereafter they all cameand accepted Islam due to his huge act ofmercy.Once when the Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) was sitting in the Mosque with agroup of his companions, he caught ev-eryone by surprise by stating that the nextperson to enter the sanctuary would be aperson of paradise. The Prophet’s com-panions waited eagerly to see who itwould be. Finally, a rather simple man bythe name of Abu Dumdum appeared. Thecompanions were befuddled because theydidn’t think that this person was extraor-dinarily pious. One of the companionsasked Abu Dumdum if he could stay withhim for a few nights making an excuse ofneed. In reality he just wanted to knowwhat was so special about Abu Dumdum.In the night the companion expected AbuDumdum to pray all night – but no suchthing happened. During the day, the com-panion expected Abu Dumdum to fast, butthat didn’t happen either. Finally, the com-panion told Abu Dumdum about what theProphet (pbuh) had said and why he wasactually spending nights in his home. AbuDumdum replied that the only thing he didthat was different and unique was beforegoing to bed every night he would for-give anyone who had offended him know-ingly or unknowingly and would go tosleep with a clean heart toward others.Forgiveness in the Arabic language is re-lated to the word “covering”. When Allah(Mighty and Sublime) forgives His ser-vants’ sins, those sins are covered on their

books of bad deeds as if those sins nevertook place. Hence when believers filledwith compassion truly forgive those whohave wronged them, they cover up in theirhearts the wrong that was done to them,not bringing those wrongs up to brow-beat people with later or to use as lever-age against them. Sincere forgiveness isto not harbor animosity against those whohave done us wrong. Having mercy forothers is in not punishing them when af-forded the opportunity to. Forgiving thosewho have wronged us benefits the mer-ciful and forgiving ones, just as benefitcomes to the ones shown compassion andforgiveness. There’s a deep sense that theway we treat others is the way that wewill be treated by God. In other words, ifwe wish for Allah’s gentle treatment to-ward us then we must be gentle towardothers.We are not physical beings exclusively.We are spiritual beings housed in a physi-cal container. The physical body has itslife and we have obligations to it, but itwill be left behind. We can’t let this physi-cal body dominate the narrative. Althoughwe tend to think of the mind, body andspirit as separate components, in realitythey are all connected and interrelated, andimprovement in any one naturally effectsimprovement in the others as well. For-giving in Ramazan purifies the mind, bodyand spirit, leading to greater clarity, sen-sitivity and health.This Ramazan, let’s try and forgive ev-eryone who has hurt us. It showsstrength, self-confidence and a desire tobe forgiven by Allah. Let us forgive ourparents, spouse, siblings, relatives,friends, and co-workers. Forgiveness isnot easy, but boy is it worth it! And, thisis, a reflection of the Qur’anic advice:“…pardon and forgive. Do you not wishthat Allah should forgive you?” (24:22).

CUTTING OFF YOUR NOSETO SPITE YOUR FACE

My Grandmother, Emma, never finished el-ementary school but she was wise in manyways. She taught me not to cause problemsfor myself by trying to punish someone else.

I often think of this when I read the news about immigration. Isee “solutions” that cause problems for the country by punish-ing immigrants. Two things in particular that I read in the lastfew days made me think of my Grandmother’s advice. First isthe denying of drivers’ licenses to undocumented persons. Thesecond is declaring that the “country is full” and trying to stopimmigration into the U.S. Most states require a person to prove“legal status” to obtain a driver’s license. About a dozen states(NOT including Florida), along with the District of Columbiaand Puerto Rico, allow a person without legal status to obtain alicense upon establishing their identity with a foreign passportand passing the same tests as everyone else. Pending legislationwould also let undocumented persons in New York obtain alicense. This issue pits the desire to punish undocumented per-sons by denying them a license with the desire to enhance roadsafety. William Bratton, who served as police commissioner inboth Los Angeles and New York, has said that giving undocu-mented immigrants a driver’s license would reduce the numberof hits and run accidents and would decrease the number ofuninsured motorists on the roads. A 2017 study found that hitand run accidents in California decreased by 7–10% after un-documented immigrants were allowed to obtain licenses. AfterNew Mexico allowed licenses to be issued to undocumentedpersons in 2011, the number of uninsured drivers fell from 33%in 2002 to 9 % in 2011. A 2017 study by the Fiscal PolicyInstitute shows that the State of New York would bring in anestimated $ 26 million in fees for license applications, car regis-tration, and the gasoline tax if the pending legislation is passed.These statistics clearly show that the desire to punish undocu-mented immigration comes at the steep cost of public safety.Would you rather make it more difficult to obtain licenses at therisk of being in an accident with an uninsured motorist? Wouldyou rather that an undocumented immigrant stops and rendersaid after an accident or flee because they didn’t want to becaught driving without a license? The second example of thedangers of cutting off your nose to spite your face is the effortsto stop/reduce immigration (even legal immigration) to the U.S.An opinion piece was published in the Washington Post on April11th entitled “Sorry, Mr. President, this country is not ‘Full’.”This was written by Marc A. Thiessen who is clearly a Trumpsupporter in many ways but expresses the opinion that we need“more immigrants, lots of them.”

“Manners maketh man” is a proverb thatis true as the rising sun. This saying is withman over the centuries and relevant moreso in these times when people seem to lose

their moorings. Having good manners is a sure way to Jannah(heaven). It’s a possession worth more than rubies and dia-monds. Good manners as enunciated in Al-Quran and the ahadith(sayings of Prophet Muhammad (u.w.b.p.) are vital ingredi-ents for a better world. Also, they pave the way for a securedakhirah (hereafter). Both Allah and Prophet Muhammad’s pre-scriptions work wonders. As true believers of Allah we are leftwith no other alternative but to adopt them in our everyday life.Else brethren, we’ll fail in adaab (civility) and so suffer theconsequences. Allah promises us great boons or favours if webring into our lives good manners. Some of them are:*On the Day of Qiyamah (judgement) the weight of good man-ners will be heaviest in the scale of record of actions.*The person whose manners are good gets the credit of fast-ing in the day and praying during the night.*Fear of Allah and good manners lead one to Jannah (heaven).*On account of good manners, Allah raises His servants to thelevel of people who are regular in prayers and fasts.*The man with good manners, will secure the position of honourand respect on the Day of Judgement even though the recordof his good acts is below the mark.*Allah guarantees that a house will be built in the uppermostportion of Heaven for the person who amends his manners andbehaviour and*The dearest person before Allah on the Day of Judgement willbe one whose manners were the best.As can be gleaned from the above list, rich dividends await uswhen adherence to good manners is emphasized and main-tained. Don’t let this bag of goodies slip away from our hands.It’s a treasure in which we can have pleasure. Subhanallah(Glory be to Allah).A few poetic verses would suffice to end this article.

If we want Jannah in flying colours,Just stick like glue to good manners,And we’ll get rewards of divine worth,

Which is Allah’s promise to us on Earth.

Donot push a new Muslim intochanging their name if they donot want to; one can be just asMuslim named Billy or Susan.In surat Nasr, Allah swt says“And you see people enteringthe religion of God in flocks.”Though revealed after the con-quest of Mecca, subhan Allahwe still see people entering thereligion of God in flocks. The basic principle of home-opathy is “like cures like.” For example, if a patient goes to ahomeopathic doctor complaining of insomnia, the homeopathwill look for the remedy which causes the same symptoms in ahealthy person—in this case, caffeine. In large doses, caffeinecauses insomnia, but in extremely small doses it will inducesleep. Onion normally causes watery eyes, therefore, a personexperiencing watery, itchy eyes will likely be prescribed alumsepia (red onion) as the cure. The majority of homeopathicmedicines are taken sublingually and absorb directly into thebloodstream through mucous membranes in the mouth. Unlikeconventional medicines, they have no preservatives, fillers, bind-ers, dyes or other toxic chemicals. Homeopathy was officiallypracticed in the U.S. from 1821 to 1935; in 1900 there were 20percent homeopathic physicians practicing with the least mor-tality rates in the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut,Massachusetts and California. Dr. John S. Heller and Dr. Will-iam Boerick were the pioneers of homeopathy in the U.S. Dueto the influence of big pharmaceutical companies, homeopathybegan to diminish, with only Connecticut, Arizona and Nevadacontinuing to have licensed homeopathic doctors. Today, theState of Florida authorizes homeopathy as an alternate medicineaccording to Senate Bill 1324. It is practiced in 54 countriesthroughout the world, chiefly in Germany, France, UK, Swe-den, Australia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and many SouthAmerican countries. In conventional medicine, doctors suppressthe symptoms of disease with the emphasis on disease manage-ment/control rather than cure: diabetes under control, choles-terol under control, arthritis under control, thyroid under con-trol, acid reflex under control, etc. Homeopathy cures the prob-lem rather than simply managing it. When a patient goes to hisprimary care physician with complaints of uncontrollable head-aches, ulcers, arthritis, shortness of breath, severe back pain,urinary bladder problems and kidney problems, he will be re-ferred to a neurologist, GI doctor, rheumatologist, pulmonologist,orthopedist, urologist and nephrologist. These specialists willprescribe medications with each of the prescription drugs caus-ing side effects and exacerbating the conditions. Now, this pa-tient has more problems. Homeopathy does not treat the dis-ease—it cures it.

It is atime to show Compassion and Mercy. You know, every time aMuslim begins an important action, he says BismillaahirRahmaanir Raheem! He says: “I begin this action in the Nameof Allaah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate!” Howmany times a day do we say these words? Surely, it must havesome effect on our behavior, if we are conscious of the mean-ing. Surely, compassion and mercy must flow from our wordsand actions. In time, our whole character should be infusedwith Allaah SWT’s mercy and compassion. This is one of thebig lessons of Ramadhan. And that is why most people paytheir Zakat during this month. Zakat is the 2.5% of unusedwealth that goes to the poor and needy. Let us try to rememberthese important lessons of Ramadhan. Many of us think thatRamadhan is a time to ‘go slow’ and to avoid exerting our-selves. Some of us, if we had the opportunity, would want tosleep all day until iftar. Ramadhan is not a time for hibernation.That is for the polar bears and grizzly bears in the cold Ameri-can winter. It is not for Muslims! Ramadhan is the time weshould be busy reading and understanding the holy Qur’an,studying our faith and trying to improve our knowledge andour character. It is a time of spiritual renewal and revival. Manyimportant events took place in Ramadhan:-The Holy Qur’an was revealed in Ramadhan.-The Battle of Badr took place in Ramadhan.- Makkah was conquered in a bloodless battle during Ramadhan.-Tariq bin Ziyad conquered Spain during Ramadhan. The listgoes on and on…So let us remember, Ramadhan is not anexcuse for laziness. It is a time for improving ourselves, im-proving our mind and body and spirit. We must welcomeRamadhan like a long lost friend. May Allaah SWT accept ourfasting, which we do only for His sake. We do not fast just tolose weight or to show off to others, how religious we are. Wefast because we love Allaah SWT, and we want to please Him.We owe Him so much. Fasting is a very small thing that HEasks us to do, only for Him. Allaah SWT says in the HolyQur’an: “Fasting is for Me alone, and I will give rewards forit.” Allaah SWT does not specify how much, 10 times, 70times or 700 times. Allaah gives rewards for fasting, from Hislimitless bounty, “bi ghairi hisaab,” without limits. I pray thatyou and I will be amongst those whom Allaah SWT rewards,without limits. Ameen!
