In 2017, Center for New Americans marked our 25th year welcoming and serving immigrants in Western Massachusetts.

consider current challenges, and to draft future plans. We engaged in a strategic planning process that began with staff members’ identifying key priorities, continued through a dialogue between staff members and the board of Directors, and culminated in board members’ outlining a plan to support and advance those key priorities.

Thus, even as we celebrate a year in which we supported the naturalization of over 66 immigrants, taught English to many more immigrants, piloted a personal care attendant training class, and dramatically enhanced our innovative use of technology in both the classroom and in our data management, we are looking forward to the next 25 years.

We were fortunate, during this milestone year, to be able to shine a spotlight on the inspiring stories of the immigrants we serve, as well as on our own story.

Our students wrote poems in class during our celebration of 30 Poems in November! They performed songs and dances representing their respective cultural traditions for Immigrant Voices, our artistic celebration at the Shea Theater. They shared their journeys with reporters at our ninth annual July 4th naturalization ceremony.

All of this takes many hands. It takes staff members who donate more time than they are paid to work. It takes the board of directors who meet monthly to review details, while also stepping back to consider the big picture. It takes volunteers who tutor students, study with students, photograph students, coach performers, and organize 30 Poems in November! It takes foundations and businesses and individuals who believe in the work enough to support it. It takes political leaders who advocate on our behalf and welcome our constituents and our proposals.

One illustration of how we collaborate to tell our story is the mural which now graces our Northampton program site.

by our tutor/volunteer, Mary Ellen, supported by The Awesome Foundation, welcomed by the Mayor and City of Northampton into their city-owned building, the mural tells the story of Center for New Americans and our students: learning English; training to follow career dreams; embarking on the citizenship journey.

We offer this annual report with appreciation to the many partners who have helped to make our work possible this past year.

Gratefully,

Laurie Millman

Since 1992, Center for New Americans has maintained the vision of an immigrant-centered welcome

has grown, the participation of its students has also grown, contributing to course design, establishing an alumni association, and even signing on as teachers and volunteers. Center for New Americans’ students participate not only in learning English, but also in the life of their new communities.

staff, volunteers, donors, and students all seek to empower local immigrants, refugees and migrants. That focus has made serving on the Board of Directors particularly gratifying during the upheavals of 2017. It is inspiring to meet with Center for New Americans staff around goals for our strategic plan. It is inspiring to share ideas with board colleagues, knowing we are working toward a common goal. It is inspiring to hear from staff members about their progress in curriculum development and citizenship training. Our Executive Director, Laurie Millman, working with an experienced and dedicated staff, has overseen Center for New Americans effectively and with imagination throughout the

and solving problems creatively. For example, Center for New Americans’ capacity-building around technology this year enhances students’ language and work-related skills, and also improves communication among Center for

Falls.

In spite of, or because of challenges to supporting new immigrants in our towns, most inspiring of all has been the outpouring of many, many local voices offering their help and support for Center for New Americans. This has been more than encouraging. It has expressed the values that founded

New Americans’ mission. As we all explore new resources, we can count what Center for New Americans has right now as most precious: the dedication of staff and volunteers, the courage and determination of its hardworking students, and the responsive, generous support from local communities for Center for New Americans’ worthy cause.

We look forward to discovering next year’s challenges and inspirations together.

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Center for New Americans continues to thrive under the guidance of its dedicated Board of Directors. Working as a team, as well as individually, they support our efforts to help immigrants become fully integrated into

our community. They are volunteers who care deeply about our mission, they meet monthly to review program details, and some are immigrants themselves. This year, the Board drafted a strategic plan to guide our work, joined our staff at our annual naturalization ceremony and other fundraising events, and introduced us to community resources. We are grateful for the time, talent, and treasure each member contributes in overseeing

TELLING OUR STORIES:

Tugba, a student from Turkey, wrote a poem about learning English, exploring her new community, and the hope that this experience gives her. She joined

two other students who shared their stories in verse at the Reading & Celebration hosted by the Poetry Center at Smith College to celebrate this year’s 30 Poems in November!

The students were welcomed warmly by 30 Poems in November! co-chairs, Abigail Warren and Elsa Phillippi Cline. Long-time friends and dedicated writers, Abby and Elsa

dedicated writing group members, to well-known, published authors, these 70 people joined Abby and Elsa in writing a poem a day and cajoling family members and friends to support them. Together, 70 writers and their 700 supporters raised over $38,000 for English classes for immigrants. Among this year’s supporters were generous local businesses: Broadside Bookshop, Jones Realty Company, Cambridge College, Paul & Elizabeth’s, Sasson Turnbull Ryan & Hoose, and Wohl Family Dentistry.

Once again, we worked with Levellers Press to produce a poetry anthology to thank those who wrote and raised in support of Center for New Americans’ free English

classes for immigrants. Nancy Haver’s beautiful woodcut of the Mill River and Randy Zucco’s careful editing distinguish the book. An anthology of student poems written in classes in all four of our program sites, with guidance from teachers and classroom volunteers, was designed by one of our Smith College interns. Some student writers were even videotaped reading their poems by Holyoke Community College students as part of a community service learning project.

Thanks to several generous grants, Center for New Americans invested last year in new ways to tell our organizational story, and showcase our

students’ achievements.

A capacity-building grant from the Beveridge Family Foundation enabled us to design a new database to more effectively document our students’ and clients’ progress. “How many students enrolled in college last year?” “How many alumni opened a new business?” “How many of the students we trained and coached secured jobs as home health aides?” “How many of the clients we guided passed their citizenship interview?” These are the

Also during this past year, Center for New Americans staff and board members were privileged to attend a thought-provoking workshop series hosted by the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts. We were encouraged to think about how to enhance marketing, technology, board, and fundraising components to build a foundation for future growth. With a grant from the Foundation at the series’ conclusion, we re-designed our website to interface more seamlessly with our new database, and highlight our programs and the immigrants who rely on them. Please visit www.cnam.org to learn more about our work and our students’ stories.

Finally, we took note of students like Gaby, who was almost late to the classes she loved because she also loved studying English online. Teachers recognized the power of introducing lessons in class and giving students tools to study at home online, and have enrolled more than 30 students in online learning. Students practice listening, reading, pronunciation, and

learners, and teachers are hastening to expand the opportunity to as many students as we can capably support.

“I’m learning, I’m talking -I meet new people.I hear new voices.I taste new tastes.

Never -I’m not tired, I’m not tired!

Because,I’m looking for Pandora’s box,

There is hope in the box!”

Teachers have long remarked that providing childcare not only opens doors to parents who want to learn English; it helps non-English-speaking children prepare for school. With support

from Community Development Block Grants and the Bete Family Foundation, we offered childcare in Amherst and Turners Falls. In some cases we were able to hire former students as childcare providers, and we tasked another former student, Marise Lyra, a current teacher and childcare professional, to guide and supervise them. Children and parents practice English in their respective classrooms. In addition, with assistance from the Franklin County Council of Governments, we applied for and received a donation of a van from the Franklin Regional Transit Authority. Twelve parents and children were transported to class this summer in our new van!

For many, the stories of recipients of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), are the stuff of newspaper articles.

For Center for New Americans, these stories represent the very real struggles of current students and their children. And the stories of refugees from Iraq and Iran are shared with Center for New Americans’ staff as we help them to apply for citizenship. The record number of applications over the past year – for citizenship, for family petitions, for DACA renewals – threatened to overwhelm the region’s capacity to serve all the immigrants needing legal services. Thanks to out-of-the-box thinking by William Newman, A.C.L.U attorney, and Harris Freeman, Western New England University School of Law professor, Center for New Americans and other immigration legal services providers collaborated to establish the Immigrant Protection Project, to offer a coordinated community response to immigrants’ legal needs in Western Massachusetts. Center for New Americans is proud to participate in this innovative support network in partnership with our pro bono immigration attorneys, Joseph Best and Scott Clark.

When Degaulle applied for Center for New Americans’ personal care attendant training, offered this past summer at Smith Vocational & Agricultural High School, he was working three jobs. Nevertheless, he

assured staff that he would attend classes 6 hours every Saturday, stay current with the homework, and maintain his participation in English class. He kept his word, completed the 60-hour course, and was recently hired by Cooley Dickinson Healthcare as a patient observer. Made possible with a pilot grant from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education, the personal care attendant training was implemented in partnership with Smith Vocational & Agricultural High School, which opened the doors to its health technology suite; the Tripp Memorial Foundation, which developed the curriculum; the Franklin Hampshire Regional Employment Board, which contributed a healthcare jobs navigator; the Franklin Hampshire Career Center, which hosted a Jobs Fair; healthcare employers, who agreed to interview our graduates; a healthcare teacher who communicated weekly with Center for New Americans’ English teachers; English teachers who reinforced vocabulary and healthcare concepts in class; career advisors who helped students draft resumes and role play interviews; retired nurses who volunteered as tutors; and highly motivated students.

Our students and clients told their stories in many other ways. They sang, danced, read poems at our second annual Immigrant Voices: A Celebration of Arts at the Shea Theater

in April.

They shared the struggles and victories of their journeys to citizenship with reporters at our 9th annual naturalization ceremony on the grounds of the Hampshire Superior Court in Northampton, July 4th.

And, thanks to a grant from the Northampton chapter of The Awesome Foundation, our alumna, Maricella, brought our work to life in the colorful mural she painted in our Northampton program site. Our volunteer, Mary Ellen Kelly, photographed Maricella as she painted, telling the story of Maricella telling our story.

Volunteers at Center for New Americans are among our greatest resources, bringing with them diverse skill sets and a deep appreciation of our work with immigrants. Volunteers enrich our program in so many ways: practicing English, assisting teachers

in the classrooms, mentoring clients seeking citizenship, providing career and business guidance, even driving job-seekers to career fairs and job interviews. Volunteers offer their expertise in human resources, graphic design, fundraising, and so much more. We are grateful to those volunteers who have worked with us for more than two decades, our energetic college students, and to those volunteers just starting their training. From all of us at Center for New Americans, thank you for helping us with our work – there aren’t enough of us to do it without volunteers!

Creceived an increase in government funding thanks to our successful application for a healthcare jobs training grant

of support from individuals who organized concerts and other fundraisers to support immigrants and our work on their behalf. Thanks to these efforts and the success of our 30 Poems in November! fundraiser, our non-public funding -- contributions from individuals and private foundations and local businesses -- increased 90% over the prior year. This is a positive trend given the very real uncertainties surrounding public funding in the current era.
