THE SOLUTION

Upon inspection of the affected tubes, it was noted that the corrosion pattern had no time or frequency consistency, but it was reoccurring in a defined location on the tube surface. Quaker Chemical Corporation (“Quaker”) implemented the use of the coating product, QUAKERCOAT® 552 MX which provided corrosion prevention and dramatically reduced the problems resulting from the rust.

In addition to incorporating QUAKERCOAT® 552 MX, Quaker made process improvements which included:

» Using the Six Sigma approach to increase from 3.2 to 5.4 on the good tubes produced to lower the defects percentage

» Changing the nozzle size of the corrosion application syste m from 1” to 2.5”, increasing the pump pressure, and improving the process speed which resulted in a more effective coating application

» Created a cleaning maintenance program for the nozzles » Developing a quality control documentation procedure for the coating process

As a result, the tubular products manufacturer was able to:

» Eliminate and reduce costs associated with non-conforming product (i.e. scrapped product, rework operations, etc.) which achieved a cost savings of $935,000 over the span of 16 months

» Improve the welding process when slowing the mill speed » Restore their customer service in delivering products on time without quality problems

CHALLENGESAn ERW (electric resistance welded) steel tube manufacturer stored its coils outdoors which exposed them to rain and moisture. THE PRODUCT

QUAKERCOAT® 552 MX is a solvent based, high solids coating intended for use as a decorative corrosion inhibiting protective coating on metal, particularly on tube and pipe surfaces. The product benefits include:

» Reduced applied coating costs due to the high solids technology resulting in greater coating coverage per gallon of product

» Inhibition of costly surface corrosion » Minimized clean up costs due to drying properties

and minimal drainoff and drippage » Relatively low VOC content
