ELECTOSTATIC SCALE-OFF

Fundamentals operation principle

The eScale-Off system controls scaling by changing scale forming ions to neutral molecules with our positively charged electrode and ground. These stable molecules stay in suspension rather than attaching to wetted surfaces as scale. This is done on a continual basis during the normal recirculation of water past our electrodes. Removing the ions from the water also allows the water to dissolve existing deposits. The continual recirculation of the water also controls biological growth by raising the pH of the water and by the flow of water through our electrical fields.

poisoning staff, the general public and the environment. Water can safely be recycled, avoiding trade waste costs associated with chemical treatment systems.

Chemical system dealers may try to scare you and tell you untruths, exaggerations, even misinformation, claiming that our system doesn't give protection. They will continue to use the unfortunate fact that there is dominance of chemical-based water treatment systems as the only defence they have against the overwhelming advantages of the eSCALEOFF system. Thankfully, this is rapidly changing, as more and more smart asset managers and engineers around the world make the obvious choice and install a eSCALEOFF system. Here at eSCALEOFF, we believe the next step will be government intervention to prevent further installations of what is fundamentally a flawed and outdated approach when compared with the simplicity of the eSCALE-OFF water treatment system. Once you have familiarised yourself with the benefits of our system, we think you'll agree.

WHY eSCALE-OFF

When it comes to choosing or reviewing the water treatment system for your cooling tower system, there really is only one responsible choice, eSCALEOFF. As an asset manager or engineer your primary concern is that the water treatment system you choose does the job efficiently. It goes without saying that there is also a responsibility to save money and maximise shareholders return on their investment, to care for the safety and well being of employees and to care for the environment for future generations wherever possible.

Here at eSCALEOFF we can unambiguously show you that our preventative water treatment system is not only the most advanced effective way of dealing with the problem of scale in chiller systems, it is ultimately the most cost-effective, safe and environmentally friendly solution available.

The eSCALEOFF water treatment system uses electrostatic energy to create a positive field in the water, which bonds to bacteria and stops them absorbing food or reproducing. As no toxic chemicals are used to eliminate bacteria, the buildup of scale and biofilm is virtually eliminated, corrosion is minimised, with no risk

Operational Benefits

Financial Benefits

1. By not introducing chemicals into your system you reduce the risk of Scale build up and Corrosion.

2. Acid cleans and other forms of invasive maintenance are greatly reduced as a result of Scale and Biofilm Removal from the system.

3. The eSCALEOFF units are completely neutral, they do not cause Corrosion.

4. The working life of all equipment is increased due to soft clean water, pumps, valves, nozzles and (NO CHEMICALS)

5. The eSCALEOFF units have a one year Warranty for the life of the contract and are always fully Maintained.

6. The eSCALEOFF system does not in any way void the Warranties on new Condenser/Chiller/Heat Exchanger systems.

7. Less damage to surrounding metal structures due to the eradication of Chemicals.

1. Scale is a very effective insulator, as little as 1/8” of Scale can reduce the thermal transfer efficiency of Cooling Tower by as much as 10 percent or more. Eliminating Scale will save thousands of Rupees(INR) in Electrical Charges.

2. Maintain maximum operating efficiency even in the warmest weather through the removal of Scale from the complete cooling system.

3. Less system bleeds. The addition of chemicals increases the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) level in the cooling water thereby increasing system bleed rates.

4. By decreasing your bleeds you REDUCE your water usage.

5. Because eSCALEOFF is a Non Chemical system you have the ability to Re-use your Bleed water.

6. No Trade Waste Cost. The Drained Water can be Re Used for Irrigation, Toilet flushing or Fire Systems because of No Chemical.

1. Maintenance savings, no more Acid cleans or repairs to Dosing equipment due to the Corrosiveness of

Chemicals.

2. The life of your Cooling system is increased because of the non existence of Corrosive chemical in your system.

4. You reduce the risk of inhalation of chemicals in water droplets created by windage.

5. You increase your operating efficiency.

6. To have the ability to Re-cycle Bleed water. (Non Toxic.)

1. Large Reduction in Trade waste charges.

2. Reduction in water consumption (Less system bleeds.) 3. Reduction in Electricity consumption because of the increase in Thermal Transfer with the eradication of Scale

from your Chillers.

4. Reduction in your Public Liability Insurance with the removal of Toxic Chemicals from your building.

5. Our eScaleoff units have an Absolute Warranty for the life of the contract; there are no hidden extra charges.

Frequently Asked Questions About Electrostatic Water Treatment

1. What is it?

2. How does it work?

3. Does the electrostatic treatment system kill bacteria?

4. Does the electrostatic treatment cause corrosion?

5. Do I need to continue testing my water?

6. Can I eliminate tower bleed altogether?

Electrostatic water treatment is a method of conditioning water using the physical and electrochemical effects of electrostatic fields to cause the formation of tiny (colloidal) particles. Essentially it is a method of deposit control. Electrostatic water treatment is a method of conditioning water using the physical and electrochemical effects of electrostatic fields to disperse tiny particles.

By applying dc voltage to a submerged electrode we form a local capacitor within the water, the piping system or treatment rack wall. Ions of calcium, magnesium and bicarbonates are brought together in the bulk solution to form colloidal particles which are then in a stable form not subject to plating out or forming deposits within areas subject to the full flow of treated water. These ions are moved from solution to suspension in the bulk water. This change allows the water to dissolve

existing scale deposits. Tiny particles that would be part scale, sludge or bacterial deposits are charged to the same

electrical polarity as the field created with the electrostatic chamber. These particles then will repel each other much the same as poles of a magnet repel each other.

The positive charge given to the surface of the bacteria draws in negative ions from the surrounding water that attach to the surface of the bacteria in higher concentrations than is normal. The resulting excess concentration of naturally occurring ions weakens the walls of the bacteria and interferes with their ability to absorb nutrition and to reproduce. As a result, they are not able to follow their normal life cycle and will begin to die as they reach their normal life expectancy, typically within two to three days.

No. The electrostatic field cannot cause corrosion because there is no electron transfer as a result of the electrostatic treatment. Once scale, sludge and bacterial deposits are removed from the system, corrosion normally caused by these deposits will be controlled as well.

Normally, the only water test required for a eSCALEOFF treated system is to monitor conductivity and pH. This eliminates many other time consuming tests that are required with chemically treated applications. A computer simulation report shall be submitted after every water test reports for evaluating performance.

No, While it is possible to operate cooling towers at higher levels of conductivity, continued bleed of the system is necessary to keep concentrations of particulate matter at appropriate levels. Water use and discharge fees will be reduced as a result of operating at higher conductivity levels. Except in special conditions the normal and proper operation of a tower will involve bleeding or blow down to maintain the water conductivity at between 3200 and 3800 mS/cm of conductivity.

Bleed off in cooling tower bottom: A Tentative bleed is set for following months:

1. March- April - 1% of water flow rate twice in a week.2. May – June - 2% of water flow rate twice in a week.3. July – August-Sept. - 1.5% of water flow rate twice in a week.4. Oct – Nov – Dec - 0.5% of water flow rate twice in a week.

7. Will old deposits of scale be removed?

8. How much power does the electrostatic system use?

9. Are there any safety hazards in using an electrostatic treatment system?

10. Can Chemical treatments be eliminated or reduced?

11. Do I need to be concerned with turning the system on or off?

12. How much power does the electrostatic system use?

13 It is dangerous?

14. What kind of water testing will I need to do?

Yes, old deposits will be loosened and dissolved slowly. In one case the SCALE-OFF system was responsible for removing over 60,000 pounds of scale that had developed in a cooling tower. It had taken over 15 years for the scale to accumulate in this tower and it took only one operating season for the Electrostatic scale-off to remove these massive deposits. However, if the deposit is sufficiently thick so that it can cause a loss of heat transfer efficiency or interfere with flow efficiency it should be cleaned before startup. We recommend starting with a clean system. Old deposits will be loosened and dissolved slowly. If the deposit is sufficiently thick to cause a heat transfer or interferes with flow efficiency it should be cleaned before startup. We recommend starting with a clean system.

Not Much, the operation of the SCALE-OFF system consumes about the same power required to operate a 7 watt night light. That consumption represents pennies per day of operating cost.

No, The SCALE-OFF system has been designed to provide the utmost protection to those who may work with this innovative fluid treatment process. The finest materials and manufacturing techniques are employed to build our products. The potential for hazardous shock is less than one would normally experience working with a typical household appliance.

Yes, in most cases the chemical treatments used to control scale, bio-fouling and corrosion are eliminated. Since cooling towers are massive air scrubbers, the total elimination of chemical additives may be related to the location of the tower, local water quality and the condition of the tower and related equipment. The elimination of chemical additives for boiler applications and other process water treatment is dependent upon many other variables. While total elimination may not be possible a dramatic reduction of chemical requirements for treating these applications is the normal.

The electrostatic system should remain on at all times. During times when a system is not in use it is important to be

sure that the electrode is immersed in water.

Since there is no current flow with the system about the only power usage is the heat loss from the power supply and for

the operation of the monitor light or other options added to a power supply. That consumption represents minimal cost per

day of operating cost.

No. There is no danger in being close to the electrostatic system. The system has been designed to eliminate the risk of

shock if it is properly maintained. About the only possibility of shock would be in the event that you were to cut the high

voltage wire enclosed in the conduit. While the voltage used to create the electrostatic field is very high the available current

is very low and is considered too low to be harmful beyond an uncomfortable jolt if directly encountered. If the system should

short to ground, the internal control of the power supply will reduce the current output to near zero. The potential for

hazardous shock is less than one would normally experience working with a typical household appliance.

Since chemical adjustments are not being made there is no need for testing to determine the levels of chemicals within

your system. No acid is fed, so no pH reading needs to be made to avoid over feed or under feed of the chemicals. Periodic

checks of the concentration of the total dissolved solids (TDS) in the water are made and the ratio is controlled by monitoring conductivity or chlorine content of the circulating water.

Old deposits will be loosened and dissolved slowly. If the deposit is sufficiently thick to cause a heat transfer or interferes

with flow efficiency it should be cleaned before startup. We recommend starting with a clean system.
