Hello everyone…

April has seemingly flown by and what a terrific month it was for our Lodge!! Since our last newsletter just about every committee had a successful event going on and made this a month to remember…

It started off with a wonderful wing-fest (thank you Adam Pallaci) that was held under the shelter on a picture perfect day. The turnout was great and the wings were even better. Thank you to all the teams who participated, volunteers and judges who helped out and congratulations to the winners who now have bragging rights for 1 year. I’m already looking forward to next year’s competition!

The Ladies Auxiliary had their annual Officer Installation ceremony and are already planning some of their big events for everyone to enjoy, one which was our Breakfast with the Easter Bunny!!! The bad weather didn’t deter a bunch of smiling children nor the Easter Bunny from having a great time! Thanks to the LA for all they do for our Lodge. Our Antlers committee did a great job helping out with cleaning up the Lodge grounds in preparation for the Easter egg hunt and they are also working on some great ideas for the rest of this year.

The bad weather did put a damper on one community event we had planned-our Smoke Alarm day had to be postponed due to the rain and lightning—however, it was great to see all the Elks volunteers who did show up to help out their community. We will keep everyone advised when that event is rescheduled.

Our Open House brought in some new faces and new members! Thanks to our Membership Committee and everyone who helped get the lodge ready and looking great! Also a big thanks to all who helped give tours, answer questions, fill out paperwork, cook or did whatever else that needed to put our “best foot forward”. Membership is the lifeblood of any Lodge and it was nice to see the new members excited about joining our Lodge. The Swim Committee had their Team registrations/sign up dates—two of them—in April. Be sure to check our website for all the Swim Team info for all the important dates and times for this upcoming swim team season !

The month of May will be just as busy for us as we have our Andy Albertson/Steven Hall golf tournament (please see flyer included in the newsletter and please sign up ASAP if you already haven’t!), our Derby Day/Cinco De Mayo combo party on May 4th, the NC Elks State Convention will be held in Wilmington this month, and of course — OUR POOL OPENS on Friday, May 24th!!!!!

Congratulations to Adam, Russ and Daz Pallaci for being named our April Elks of the Month.

I hope to see you at our Lodge soon!!!

Fraternally Yours, Tom Connolly Exalted Ruler

May is the month that kicks off the first leg of the Triple Crown in Horse racing, but for High Point Elks Lodge # 1155, we had our own version of the Triple Crown in April. That’s right, we have not one, not two, but three Elks of the Month. Therefore, I’d like to congratulate Adam, Russ and Daz Pallaci for being our Elks of the month for April!! All 3 are on our House Committee and have contributed in big ways over the past month. Adam once again headed up a very successful and fun Wing Fest that was held under our shelter. It is a big project, and he does a great job getting teams involved, and makes sure things run smoothly so that everyone has a wonderful time. Russ is our House Committee Chairman for this year (which in itself is quite a job and responsibility) and not only has he done a terrific job for the Lodge in that capacity, but we had one of the biggest family burger nights I can recall in recent years. We had over 75 burgers ordered and the best part—thanks to Russ and the team cooking that night—we were prepared and could handle the high numbers of orders. It’s not easy to balance supply and demand for our Thursday burger nights but Russ did it and made it a great night for everyone who was there. Last and certainly not least, I’d like to thank Daz for once again planning and running his “Wheel of Karaoke” for us. This was something new he came up with and tried last year for us and it was a HUGE hit. Even with the success he had with it, he went back to the drawing board and tweaked it a bit to make it even better for the competing Karaoke teams. Daz is a great party planner and he never ceases to amaze me with his energy and ideas to make these parties such a success. If you see any of the 3 Pallaci men, please be sure to congratulate and thank them for all they do for our Lodge!!!!

In honor of golf’s premiere event: The Masters, Tom Adams, Bob Gold and a few others decided to have a “dress in your best/tackiest Golf clothes/putting competition/Caddyshack movie night” !! Sometimes the best nights are the ones that aren’t truly planned ahead of time, and that’s what happened in this case.

With the “Masters” weekend at hand and everyone getting caught up in its excitement and tradition, it was decided to maybe start a tradition of our own…..have everyone show up in their best or tackiest golf clothes, have a bracket style putting competition and all the while having the Golf classic “Caddyshack” playing on the wall projector! Big thanks to Bob Gold for bringing his putting green to the Lodge for everyone to enjoy. We had a great turnout, a lot of laughs, and one heck of a terrific putting competition that came down to the wire.

We hope to do more of the same for each PGA Major the rest of the year with different golf movie each time, so please check the website and upcoming events for more info!

VETERANS CORNER We had a great time Thursday April 25th at the VA Hospital in Salisbury! Jodie Hilliad, Theresa Franklin, Kara Henson and Kathy Corpening made great sandwiches for the Vets to enjoy. Thanks to Linda Transou and John Harkey for coming along for this visit. Our next visit will be a special Memorial Day cookout on Wednesday May 22nd where we will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs for our Veterans. We plan to leave the Lodge at 11:00 am and return at 3:30 pm. We are looking for volunteers to cook and help serve our Veterans. Please see the sign-up sheet in the Lounge. If you have the time, we welcome all and our Veterans are so appreciative of our support. Typically we visit the Salsibury VA Hospital on the 4th Thursday of every month. We leave the Lodge by 5:50pm and we are back by 8:30 pm. You will never know what a rewarding experience it is until you go! Veterans are thankful for our visit, but we get the reward of serving them. Any interest in going please call Beth Hawks 336-688-2063.

Thanks for serving our Vets! Beth Hawks

Hello Everyone!!! Opening day of the pool will be Friday, May 24th from 4:00-9:00pm. We will have our traditional Opening Day FREE Hot Dog Cookout beginning at 6pm. You are encouraged to bring a prospective Member since guests of Members are FREE opening weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). No in town guests are allowed on Memorial Day. The pool will remain open through Labor Day, September 2nd.

We look forward to a great time at the Pool this year. There will be plenty of planned activities (School’s Out Cookout, 4th of July, Labor Day, Cornhole & Bocce Ball Tournaments, etc.) and an exciting Swim Team season. Please remember that the entire pool deck and shelter areas are designated no smoking areas.

We invite all Members in good standing who are current with Lodge Dues to join the pool. Due to rising costs for utilities, pool management, equipment, and supplies we are increasing pool dues $5 to $80 per person. Please note – this is the first adjustment in pool dues since a $10 increase in 2013. Guest fees will remain at $10 per person per visit. We also offer the 10 visit guest card for $80. This card can only be purchased by a paid pool member and will be available from the Lodge Office. Lockers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Rental cost is $5 for the season. Locker numbers and combinations will be provided by the Lifeguards.

Lifeguards WILL NOT be allowed to collect any membership fees at the pool. Payments can be made at the Lodge Office Monday through Friday 10am - 4pm. Pool cards will be available upon your first visit to the pool with proper identification.

Please note that in order to use the pool opening weekend, you must have your Lodge Dues current and Pool Dues paid by 2pm on Friday, May 24th. There will be nobody to collect dues until the following Tuesday, May 28th. All major credit cards are accepted for pool dues/fees.
