PRESIDENT’S PAGE Last weekend Strato and I went up to lakes Kuratau and Rotoaira for the SFFNZ Nationals. It was a very friendly event with 20 serious anglers competing. A cool south-east wind was blowing the fishing was not easy, and there were more than a few upsets and young Geoffrey Bernsten performing exceptionally well in third place. Check out the SFFNZ website http://www.flyfishing.org.nz/ for a copy New Zealand’s best Trout Flies for a discount price of $35.00. Prior to the Nationals, the New Zealand fly fishing team, which is preparing to go to the World Flyfishing Championships in the Czech Republic in May, held its fly fishing clinic on the Whanganui River. While the number of attendees was less than hoped, the event proved rewarding for everyone involved despite Cyclone Lusi. We were assisted by the Manager of the Czech Fly Fishing Team and one of their top representative anglers who were both free with their advice on techniques, equipment etc. so everyone including the NZ Team learnt something from the experience. This month we will renew our conversation with Graham Whyman via Skype. Graham will be chatting with us as a representative of the Taupo Fishery Advisory Committee. As well as informing us on the work of the Committee, Graham would like some feedback from us. Lake Taupo and its tributaries are a key resource for all recreational fly fisherman in the North island. This is an opportunity for you to raise any questions you may have about the fishery and its management. You can either direct your questions to Graham on the night, or ask Strato or me to raise them on your behalf. As well as the help desk, this month we will also have Ross Gigg displaying a range of flies and the materials required to tie them. He is representing Feather Merchants and will also have catalogues available so that you can see the range of materials available. Once again, we have our AGM in May and I would really like some new committee members to step up and take a greater role in the Club. It’s a great way to get to know more club members, pick up ideas and advance your fishing skills as well knowing that you are contributing to supporting the Club’s activities at the fishing pond, trips, education, camaraderie, etc.

CLUB EVENTS THIS MONTH ON-STREAM DAY Next onstream day Saturday 5th The On-Stream Day will be on the Wainuiomata River. On-stream days are opportunities for members who are new to flyfishing to learn from an experienced angler. Attendance at one or two on-stream days will help in gaining an understanding of fishing rivers. Develop rudimentary casting skills at our Hataitai Park sessions before coming to an on-stream day. It is your responsibility to have a current NZ sports fishing licence. These can be purchased from Hunting & Fishing, 444 Cuba St Alicetown, Hamills, 87 Hutt Rd, Thorndon, or online from Fish & Game. Contact Strato (386-3740) before 9pm on the Wednesday prior to get details of where to meet. Limited numbers can be accommodated and acceptance will be on a first come first served basis. Any cancellations will be broadcast on Newstalk ZB (AM1035) after news and weather from 7am on the day. Casting Practice Hataitai Park 9.30 am Sundays Casting tuition is available throughout winter until daylight saving begins except on on-stream days when casting practice is held on-stream. Being able to handle windy conditions will do much for your confidence and success on-stream. Any member who needs help with casting but is unable to attend the scheduled sessions should phone Gordon Baker (027 494 6487) to arrange an alternative time. Gordon is a Federation of Fly Fishers certified casting instructor. Capital Trout Centre As another season draws to a close, we would like to take the opportunity to thank Steve’s Fishing Shop and Hutt Valley Hunting & Fishing for their assistance with the issuing of licences for the open days we hold. TRIP REPORT: Taupo weekend 15/16th March. Strato, Kevin, Ben and Maurice braved cyclone Lusi and embarked on a Taupo fishing weekend, with the plan to mainly hit Otamangakau if weather permitted! Arriving in Turangi about 10pm Friday night, Ben was all ready for a cup of tea and a lie down but Strato was having none of that (and he had driven the whole way! What a champ!). So it was straight to the Waipehi mouth for 90 mins of night fishing. Kevin was straight into a couple of nice browns and a rainbow or two - as was Strato. Ben finally hooked into a fish after about 40 mins...turned out to be a dirty catfish! And then another one - a brown foul hooked in the dorsal! Bit of a bizzare start to the weekend for Ben. The rainbows from the Waipehi mouth were in pretty good nick but the browns were a bit out of condition apart from a nice 4-4.5 pounder that Kevin nailed. Saturday morning, after about 4 hours sleep we were off to the big O with our float tubes. As it turned out, Lusi's bark was a lot worse than her bite

and we got a good Saturday morning's tubing in before the wind made things unfishable about 11.30am. Ben and Kevin each got nice rainbows around the 4 pound mark and the Master (one guess for who that is - no it's not Sachin Tendulker) got 3

good fish, including a beautiful 7.5 pound rainbow in peak condition (see photo). The fish turned out to be feeding quite deep (not much insect life around) so we fished 2 nymphs - damsel first, then a bloodworm or snail

Page 7: Wellington Flyfishers April 2014 · Hunting & Fishing, 444 Cuba St Alicetown, Hamills, 87 Hutt Rd, Thorndon, or online from Fish & Game. Contact Strato (386-3740) before 9pm on the

below that and then a beadheaded dark woolly bugger below. They all took the woolly buggers! As the wind started to get up, Ben switched to a spinning rod with a rapala and immediately hooked into a very strong rainbow - but lost it in the

weed. Also, Ben had his first experience netting a trout from a float tube - he did not make it look easy!! It was off to the lower Tongariro Saturday avo for some wet lining and the fishing was very quiet! Of course Strato managed to still catch a couple of small ones. That night we again hit the Tongariro - this time at the bridge pool in the dark - the fish only came on at 10pm (like clockwork after Strato predicted it!). Ben got a small rainbow and Srato nailed a nice 4-4.5 pound brown in good condition. Our final session was Sunday morning at Lake Kuratau - Otamangakau was blowing a gale but Kuratau was bizzarely glassy flat - bit of a micro

Page 8: Wellington Flyfishers April 2014 · Hunting & Fishing, 444 Cuba St Alicetown, Hamills, 87 Hutt Rd, Thorndon, or online from Fish & Game. Contact Strato (386-3740) before 9pm on the

climate going on! The fishing (wet lining again - sinking tip) was slow to start but Strato then nailed a beautiful 5 pounder - a very good fish for Lake Kuratau. Kevin got a few good rainbows too! With the wet lining a bit slow, Ben again switched to a rapala and they immediately started nailing it! Ended up landing 12 in a couple of hours on the rapala - with the biggest being 3.5 pound. Strato and Kevin got a few more on the fly too (switched to brighter flies with a quicker retrieve which did the trick), and then Maurice headed down later and got 6 for himself! So overall a great weekend, 47 fish landed between us for the weekend - took home about 10-12. Ben Drake

GUEST SPEAKER REVIEW Our guest speaker at the March meeting was Phil Teal from Wellington Fish & Game. Phil gave an outline of Fish & Game’s objectives and spoke of the political pressures and the proposed national frameworks which were trying to impose bottom line limits on environmental health which were well below what was required for safe recreational activities and trout survival With Fish & Game being the main environmental advocate, this placed significant pressure on Fish & Game funds with over a million dollars having recently been spent fighting a range of proposals. In the future, Fish & Game may need to choose the cases that they fight as the current level of spending cannot be sustained in the long term by licence fees. Wellington Fish & Game was actively promoting youth involvement through a number of proposals aimed at junior anglers. Trout monitoring through drift dives, tagging, spawning management would still continue to ensure Fish & Game had a sound scientific base for future decisions. Phil’s presentation was very well received and the issues raised will continue to be debated in the future.

Learning about Lake Fishing Back at the beginning of March I headed to the Park Travellers Lodge at National Park for a coaching clinic on loch/ lake fishing. John Horsey is a professional guide from the UK with over 22 years experience. He has represented UK at fly-fishing 13 times and has been ranked number 3 in the world. He was in NZ to coach the NZ team and conducted two weekend clinics as fundraisers for the NZ Commonwealth fly-fishing team I arrived Friday night and met the other 8 participants as well as Yoshi from Rod and Reel and John The weekend was divided into classroom sessions and time on the water. Saturday morning was in the classroom with a talk from John on loch/ lake style fishing. We also watched a DVD on Fly-fishing Blagdon Lake which is in Sommerset. (A copy will make it to the library soon, I promise) We then headed out to Lake Roto-aira which has previously been the venue for the 28th world fly fishing champs. We fished for 5 hours from boats. I got some one on one tuition from John and learned a lot just by watching him catch 5 fish on two different rigs.

Booby flies in John’s flybox

Sunday morning was back in the classroom sharing experiences and lessons from the time on Roto-aira. We then headed to Lake Kuratau. We learned how to use different types of sinking lines, learning to count the seconds to measure and set lines at different depths to increase chances of catching fish. If the fish were feeding we tried dry flies. We learned not to just fish the weeds but to try deeper water too. Another lesson was about the size of flies we use on lakes. Most of John’s flies were not bigger than size 10 and he firmly believes the NZ boobies are too big for fishing our lakes.

The flies used by John on Lake Roto-aira The weekend was about how to catch more fish and to keep thinking about what to try next when you are not catching fish. What do you change to increase your chances of success rather than packing up and going home? Warren Horne

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Subject: Article Muddying The Waters Wellington Fly Fishers Club(Inc) Date: Thu, 27 Feb 2014 12:43:30 +1300

I am personally appalled that you could print this article in our magazine Here is a Frenchman or someone living in France, telling us what to do here, talking about $335 per hectare subsidies in Roquefort country. This to support a failing economic practice, why should others support such economic quackery. No wonder why Europe is in such a parlous state, this is what your correspondent would have NZ doing too. If farmers wish to borrow money to farm or buy farms should this be our concern. At least they have the expectation to pay back their lenders unlike half the European countries who have subsidied themselves into oblivion. What is it with people who want to tell people what they should do with their assets and whether they should borrow to make more money. If we listened to all doomsayers over the centuries where the hell would we be. No cars, no trains, no aeroplanes, poor health, poor food, no electronics no carbon fibre rods, no fast sink tip or “no” sink floating lines, no 4WDs to take us to places impossible to get too, and a host of other innovations which would be doomed under the weight of negative thinkers.

I also recognise that some of our rivers are polluted, but the finger has more often needs to be pointed at civic fathers whose poor sewage systems from towns cities and villages have spoiled our rivers. However having said this most areas are on the up and up with the recognition that work has to be done and is being done. I too have been to France moderately frequently and sure I have seen some clean rivers but also I have seen plenty of rivers with their share of pollution too. Can I quote an Englishman I met and visited his operation where he farms sturgeon in the Bordeaux region in ponds. This for the caviar market. He cannot use water from Gironde, the main big river running through the city as it so polluted. The native Sturgeon that used to live there have all gone and nothing lives in it. If you think the Manawatu river is not wonderful (and it is improving and is not turgid) and you truly want want to see a bad river, then I can recommend you see the Gironde. There are dozens of other rivers throughout Europe of similar ilk. It is true to suggest we are not perfect, but I can tell you we are not too bad either. Everyone is keen to knock our

  12

rivers and the state they are in. We are no different to most developed countries, we have a pretty high standard of living, there is sadly a trade off for this. It would be naive to think otherwise. It is no different to the Greens caterwauling for the return of the bicycle and horse and carts but still using their personal cars and aeroplanes to get around in the meantime until this is all we can afford to use as our economy is stuffed. I get cross when people start telling me how my money should be spent, Emissions Trading is the greatest “have” we have seen, not unlike a Ponzi scheme, set up by the “have not’s “ spending everyone else’s wealth on crackpot schemes. Already this whole scheme is in disarray, not just here but internationally and will eventually be shown up as just such. This Dave Hansford is suggesting a whole series of further bureaucracies, subsidies, legislation, and a host of idiotic ideas which in Europe brought that continent to its financial knees. Whilst I recognise that some controls are required we do not need some dopy French subsidised wacko ideas coming in here. There are only 4.3 million of us and we do not have an European accord with the Euro to bail us out of financial cock ups. I can still fish anywhere in NZ and I would suggest there are trout in all rivers here too unlike the Gironde and others. Our real wealth which indirectly employs us all are in the main agricultural with a lot of industry related to it, or sea based. Tourism is not bad either but the rest is in the main service industry. I have yet to hear a tourist tell me that we are polluted, get a life and get out and go fishing, I am off down South this very afternoon. I am flying , driving 4 WD, staying in rented accommodation on the banks of a river which flows through a large dairy area, using my carbon fibre rods, fluorocarbon leaders, drinking wine, beer, eating cheeses, spreading butter on bread for sandwiches, and generally having a damn good time. I will no doubt also catch quite a few fish, which I may choose to kill or not. I will not have someone else make that decision for me either. We are becoming a nation of whiners, look about you and you will see a rather large number of great and wonderful things around us. If we listened to these people we would miss out on so many good things. I really enjoy my trips to France (I am lucky as I seem to be there every year for one reason or another) but I am always reminded when I return that I enjoy NZ more, I can do so much more, I am not tripping over people wherever I go. Europe is fabulous, history, art, style, architecture, scale and just different.

However our basically clean and healthy air, environment and a healthy dislike for bureaucracy, politicians and heavy handed regulations have kept the very worst of what your correspondent, Dave Hansford is proposing for us! This started off as a note to say I did not like this article, however it has morphed into a bit more than a note, it is now a plea to thinkers to really look at this article and see what it is actually saying or suggesting we should be doing. Extreme I would suggest hardly touches the surface of this article. On rereading it again I am deeply incensed by it. Trying to compare the Wanganui and the Manawatu with the worst of Europe is a nonsense. I had to wear gloves when using the locks and using ropes on some of the canals such was the pollution and the risk of infection was so high (this was recommended by the organisers) and these waters also then ran into the various rivers! I might add too that the dunnies on all of these canal boats do not have holding tanks, rather it goes straight into the water! Just try that in NZ and see what would happen. France is the second largest agricultural nation in the world after the USA, do you think they don’t have similar problems as the rest of the world with highly sophisticated farming management. It is the numbers of people on the planet that are the problem, feeding them and tidying up their excretions. I am looking out my office window over the harbour here in Wellington, there are fishermen everywhere catching King Fish, Snapper and all sorts of other mackerel like fish in abundance, people swimming, canoeing, board paddling and lying on the beach. Get your correspondent doing that in any of the big French ports and I will show you either a dead man or a dreamer! Our rivers in the main are all pretty much the same. Cheers Sam Cranfield

MAKE A WISH On the 13th March the Capital Trout Centre was privileged to host Kody Schlief and his family and relations as part of a Make a Wish event. Kody has a life threatening sickness and one of his wishes was to go fishing with his cousins from Hamilton. Kody managed to catch the biggest fish of the evening and the attached photo shows him in his super hero Batman mask with his 1,010 gm catch. It was humbling to see how all those involved coped with Kody’s illness and subsequently we received the following correspondence from Make a Wish. Strato, once again my sincerest thanks for helping out so willingly with Kody’s Wish and bringing such joy to Kody and the family. Feedback from the volunteers and family has been overwhelmingly positive and I know everyone really appreciates your efforts and generosity of spirit. I hope to have the pleasure of working with you again in the future. Best regards Tom Bird Wish Coordinator.

This is an opportunity for those attending to have their questions answered. This is a chance for newer members to have fly fishing mysteries unraveled. Tying techniques and problems, rigs, knots, fly selection, issues, casting, how to and where to - bring your problems and try the Helpdesk out. It will be manned by a different senior member each month. The April Helpdesk will be manned by Gordon Baker
