Sarti Winery Descriptions

PIEMONTE

Terre da Vino - Vite Colte

This winery has access to an extensive range of vineyards from a wide variety of Piemon-

te’s producing districts. They successfully create modern wines of character and quality

that are regularly given awards at international events.

Cascina Morassino

Cascina Morassino is a small, family owned estate run by the winemaker Roberto Bianco. He

is from the youngest generation and trained at the highly regarded Alba Enological School.

Forteto della Luja

Forteto della Luja is located in Loazzolo, Piemonte, a small village 30 kilometres east of

Alba, in the northwest of Italy. The winery, originally established in 1826 hosts an old

Piemontese house, stone cellar (dating back to 1700) and steep vineyards, all nestled into

the magnificently wooded hillside of Langhe. Up until 1985, the Azienda, owned by the

Scaglione family, was managed as a producer of grapes for sale and only a small quantity

was kept and made into wine consumed by the family.

LOMBARDIA

La Prendina

The vineyards of this estate are in the hills south of Lake Garda and are owned by Lucia-

no Piona of Cavalchina. With a local climate influenced by the lake, it is ideal for making

soft, accessible wines that represent good value for money.

Aldo Rainoldi

The winery, still owned and run by the Rainoldi family, was established in 1925 and its

own vineyards supply about 10% of the wine; the rest is sourced from 60 growers many

of whom have been with the family since the beginning. The wines of Valtellina are from

the region of Lombardy near its northern Alpine border with Switzerland and north east

of Lake Como, most of which historically been drunk locally or sold to Switzerland.

VENETO

Cavalchina

Cavalchina effectively created the wine of Bianco di Custoza in the early 1960s when they

were the first estate to sell their wine as Custoza. An historical vineyard as part of the fa-

mous Battle of Custoza was fought on this soil in 1866.

Torre d’Orti

For centuries the name Torre d’Orti on the San Martino Buanalbergo maps indicates a

precise area on the hills near the village of Marcellise. Recently the Piona family bought

the land of the former watchtower, using the historic name for their estate. The land was

replanted with vines for the production of Valpolicella wines. The terroir is special in that

the red earth typical of Valpolicella classico is combined with white chalk.

Canevel

When Caramel, a Treviso wine merchant, realised that he could not find a Prosecco of a

quality he was happy with he decided to make his own. They chose Valdobbiadene as

the best region for Prosecco grapes and now their own vineyards produce most of their

requirements.

Balestri Valda

A Family-run wine estate founded on the experience of years devoted to excellency in

the vineyard and cellar, managed with passion by Guido Rizzotto.

The estate’s 19 hectares occupy some of the best wine-growing slopes of Soave country,

from Mount Carniga to below Castelcerino near Verona. Blending naturally into this land-

scape of hills and vineyards, they are cared for by people who have a passion for this

land and a desire for excellency.

Brigaldara

The “La Brigaldara” winery is located outside the village of San Floriano in the Valpoli-

cella area to the north of the city of Verona in North eastern Italy. It perches on a slope

at the mouth of the Marano Valley, one of the four valleys which make up the “Classico”

area of this well-known wine producing region.

TRENTINO ALTO ADIGE

Ferrari

Ferrari, founded over 100 years ago, has established itself as the most quality conscious

producer in Italy of metodo classico sparkling wines, regularly winning awards. They are a

benchmark for any producer of serious sparkling wines and particularly the fabled Giulio

Ferrari Riserva del Fondatore.

Cantina Girlan

The Alto Adige on Italy’s Northern border is home to the best Italian co-operatives and

Cantina Girlan is one of them. They are run as if they were a small family business and

this is reflected in the quality and consistency of the wines. The winery itself is relatively

small and situated in the back streets of the lovely village of Cornaiano.

FRIULI VENEZIA GIULIA

Forchir

Forchir, one of Friuli’s most important wineries and over a century old, makes wines that

reflect the true character of the region and suited for modern taste.

EMILIA ROMAGNA

Medici

This family owned winery near Bologna in Northern Italy produces characteristic wines,

including proper Lambrusco, as it should be made. They are also responsible for the ex-

cellent value Castelli del Duca range of varietals from the hills around the medieval town

of Piacenza.

Castelli Del Duca

Castelli del Duca is a project started by Alberto Medici of Medici Ermete & Figli a decade

ago to create wines typical of the Piacenza region and made with cutting edge technology.

Castelli del Duca wines come from a selection made from four wineries.

Poggio Pollino

A second project of the Medici family who have joined with the Manzi family is this small

estate based near Imola. It focuses on growing the best Sangiovese di Romagna.

TOSCANA

Castello della Paneretta

A rather dormant winery in the past Paneretta has been recently revived by new owners

and is now making wines of undisputed quality. The focus of their wines is on the tradi-

tional style of Chianti but made with modern techniques.

Bichi Borghesi

A substantial estate of over 400ha but with 20ha under vine, this provides all the grapes for

their production. The family has owned and run the estate for over 400 years, and it is with

the new generation, Niccolo’ Simonelli, that the estate has been renewed and invigorated.

Pinino

From an estate originally created in 1874, Pinino has recently been reinvented by two

friends to immense acclaim in the wine press for the sheer quality of the wine. A relatively

small estate of 16ha for Toscana, this wine really punches above its weight.

Le Casalte

Le Casalte was originally an abandoned farm and was bought by Paola and Guido Barioffi

in 1975. It is a small estate of 9ha of vineyards and the first vintage was in 1979.

Fattoria Mantellassi

Established in 1960, Mantellassi is considered one of the most prestigious Morellino pro-

ducers, and it played a key role in obtaining DOC recognition for Morellino di Scansano

wine in 1978. Brothers, Aleardo and Giuseppe Mantellassi are the current generation run-

ning this family estate.

Fontaleoni

Azienda Agricola Fontaleoni is a small estate whose vineyards are located at 200 meters

above sea level, the ideal altitude for growing the Vernaccia varietal. It was established in

1959 when the Trioani family, vignerons for generations, moved to Tuscany. Restructured

in the nineties, the cellar was renovated and new vineyards were planted in order to pro-

duce high-quality wines.

MARCHE

Piersanti

The Piersanti Winery was founded in 1955 by Giovanni Piersanti and his children, Silve-

ria and Carlo. Today Carlo’s sons, Giuliano and Ottavio, run the winery. Over the years

the family has been able to demonstrate competence and reliability assisted to a business

philosophy based on value for money. Verdicchio Classico dei Castelli di Jesi comes from

the beautiful central Italian region of Le Marche, which nestles between the Apennines to

the west and the Adriatic sea to the east. It remains one of Italy’s best loved white wines.

LAZIO

Casale Marchese

Frascati is undoubtedly capable of producing wines of great character and style. Casale

Marchese shows how it can be done when the best clones of the permitted varieties are

used and careful selection is utilized in the winery.

Bigi

Orvieto is a very ancient wine already produced by the Etruscans on the slopes dominated

by the high rock of tufa. Favourite of popes and aristocrats, called by G. D’Annunzio “sole

d’Italia in bottiglia” (“Italian sun in a bottle”), over the centuries it has become one of the

worldwide symbols of Orvieto. Bigi’s Orvieto represents the cellar’s flagship wine, consid-

ered one of its most prestigious products.

ABRUZZO

Talamonti

This private winery was established in 2001 to realise the true potential of Abruzzo’s vine-

yards, especially the under rated Montepulciano grape. The winemaker, Lucio Matricardi,

previously worked at top estates in Tuscany and brings with him a blend of modern ex-

pertise and tradition.

CAMPANIA

Azienda Agricola Montevetrano

The Azienda Agricola Montevetrano was born years ago through the experimental enthu-

siasm of a group of friends who shared a passion for wine, stemming from the legendary

Bordeaux wines of the era. In 1991, the very first bottles of Montevetrano were produced,

just for friends, from 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Aglianico. It has been like an end-

less celebration ever since, and a surprising one with Montevetrano having far exceeded its

expectations. Old friends Silvia Imparato and Riccardo Cotarella still remain enthusiastic at

the helm of the company, producing a wine of superb quality and age.

I Favati

A husband and wife team work hard in the volcanic soils of the Avellino region of Campa-

nia to make wines from the traditional local varieties that show great character and flavour.

PUGLIA

Cantine Paradiso

For three generations the Paradiso family have cultivated the vines in a land of ancient

winemaking traditions. In 1950, Angelo Paradiso built his first winery in Cerignola, in

the heart of Daunia. The love for the land is transmitted to the four children, who in

later years have enlarged and improved the cellar, acquired new land and expanded the

business with the construction of an oil mill. Today it is the founder’s grandson’s who is

continue to work.

Angelo Rocca

At the end of XIX century, Francesco Rocca started his historical business by loose wine.

In 1936 his son Angelo enhanced the wine production and built up a cellar in Nardò,

Apulia. In the 1960’s the first bottling line was bought and thus started the distribution

of products under the Rocca brand. Nowadays, Ernesto Rocca (the founder’s grandson)

along with his sons Paolo, Marco, Luca and Matteo, he shares duties and responsibility

with, runs the family business, which includes also a building company and a leading

trot horse stud farm.

Brunel-lo has now earned its place among the great wines of the world, for some vintages prob-ably the greatest. Made from 100% localised clone of San-giovese Grosso from the best vineyards in Montalcino, the wine is aged for three years in Slovenian or French oak, then laid to rest in the bottle. Ruby red colour with hues of cherry, full intense bouquet with spicy tones, the taste is slightly tannic, very rich and warm, full bodied with long, distinctive aftertaste. Great with everything or by itself, red robust meat and stew.

85. GUADO AL TASSO 75cl £Antinori - 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 12% Baernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot

On the nose the initial balsamic sensations are followed by aromas of ripe fruit and spices,

on the palateis velvety, with soft tannins and much finesse. The finish and aftertaste are

well supported by savory mineral notes and much length and persistence.

86. TIGNANELLO 75cl From £Antinori - 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon

Obtained from the best of Marchese di Antinori estate. Tignanello is carefully aged in

French barriques for fourteen months and then twelve months in bottle in dark dusky cel-

lars. This wine is supplied to the Italian Royal Family, the Swedish Court and the Vatican.

87. SASSICAIA “The legend” 75cl From £Incisa della Rocchetta, Tenuta San Guido - 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc Nicolo’ Incisia della Rocchetta from the fortified town of Bolgheri, sold his first experi-

mental Sassicaia in 1968. Made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon (Tuscany’s first), it was

Nicolo’s dream to create wines equal, if not better, than the great wines of Bordeaux. He

achieved his dream and today the 15000 cases a year that are produced from one harvest

are almost impossible to obtain, we at Sarti have a standing order for a yearly allocation

of “would you believe it”, a mere six cases. This wine has great depth of colour, classic

Cabernet presence, abundance of blackcurrant, a little vanilla from the new wood and

an earthy underground aroma. It has masses of block busting, ripe fruit on the palate.

wine in Italy inspired by the very finest French Champagne.

Ferrari was begun in 1902 (when Trento was not even part of Italy but in the Hapsburg

Empire) and is one of the oldest producers of metodo classico (methode champenoise) spar-

kling wine in Italy. The grapes are bought in from small growers many of whom started

selling to the original Ferrari in 1902.
