CRITICAL INCIDENT STRESS MANAGEMENT
The department participates cooperatively with the Thomas Jefferson EMS Council to maintain a team of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) personnel. The objective of the team is to promote staff health, mental health, emotional well‐being, and retention. The team works to prevent critical incident stress reactions and cumulative stress difficulties, along with the reduction in frequency, intensity, and duration of stress‐related problems.
COMPREHENSIVE MEDICAL EXAMS The department contracts with the PHS to administer annual fitness‐for‐duty medical exams for all career uniformed personnel in the department. It is the desire of the department to eventually provide annual medical exams for volunteer personnel as well.
FITNESS ASSESSMENTS Annual fitness assessments are mandatory for all career personnel. Volunteer personnel are encouraged and able to participate in annual fitness assessments if desired. Fitness assessments are non‐punitive, confidential, and positive individualized programs. Components of the results are measured against the individual's previous assessments – not against a standard or norm.
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The purpose of the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is to maximize productivity and to help identify and resolve personal concerns that may affect job performance. The EAP offers individualized, confidential assessments based on clinically‐sound standards, brief counseling, and appropriate community referrals as necessary. The EAP is available to career personnel and operational volunteers.
CHAPLAINCY SERVICES Chaplains do not replace home church pastors, but seek to support individuals who may be in professions with special risks or needs. Chaplains are available for every member of the department, regardless of nationality, citizenship, race, gender, religion, faith, sexual orientation, age, ethnicity, or other any other factors. Chaplaincy services are strictly confidential.
CYCLING FOR FITNESS
Under the direction of the department’s fitness trainers, personnel routinely cycle together to help with weight management, mood improvement, strength and coordination, and overall fitness. No experience is required. All riders are welcome. The Department maintains a loaner fleet of 2006 GT Avalanche 2.0 bikes for use by personnel.

ACFR & ACAC have teamed up to offer a new group exercise class: Boot Camp PT! This new group class, held at the new ACAC Downtown, is an intense workout geared toward a military‐style training, incorporating various forms of body weight exercises, as well as supplemental weight exercises, all put together to make you not only stronger at what you do – saving lives & property – but, also make you more efficient at what you do. This class will help you achieve a greater level of fitness, no matter how "in shape" or "out of shape" you feel you currently are. This exercise style offers new and exciting PT opportunities for current fire rescue personnel. FITNESS & WELLNESS The Department of Fire Rescue proudly boasts a comprehensive, proactive wellness and fitness program modeled after NFPA 1583: Health‐Related Fitness Programs for Firefighters and the IAFF/IAFC/ACE Fitness & Wellness Initiative.
It is no secret that, historically, the fire service has been known more for their apparatus and equipment than the uniformed personnel who provide emergency services and use such equipment. Firefighters and EMS responders respond to emergency incidents that require extreme physical output and often result in adverse physiological and psychological outcomes. These adverse outcomes, over time, can and do affect the overall wellness of the firefighting and emergency response system. The ultimate goal of the department’s wellness and fitness program is to improve the quality of life of all personnel.
