These memories are stored in the tissue, not the central nervous system. An example of this is the person who is going to be involved in a collision and becomes fearful in anticipation of the imminent impact. It would not be unusual for this person to re-experience that fear when being “treated” in the area that was physically hurt in the accident, even years later. It may explain why people receiving organ transplants can have vivid dreams about events that happened to the donor. When a person is injured physically or emotionally there is a force that enters the body. If the body is not able to dissipate the energy of the physical injury or the emotional impact, it will retain it. In an effort to minimize the disruption to the body from this foreign energy, the energy is walled off which creates an “energy cyst,” a term coined by Dr. Elmer Green, director of the Karl Menninger Institute of Psychiatry. The area of “chaos” does not blend well with the body’s energy system and the “energy cyst” requires additional energy input to be contained. The energetic disturbances of the “energy cyst” can lead to compensations inhibiting normal body functions and can cause acute or chronic pain by affecting the structure. There is now indisputable evidence that an electro-magnetic field exists within and around the body. Scientists involved in biophysics and cell biology recognize a highly sophisticated and interconnected energetic continuum called a cellular matrix or living matrix. Dr. James L. Oschman, who has been researching the human body as an energetic system for more than 15 years and is the author of Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis, acknowledges that this living matrix not only communicates within and outside the system but also stores information called tissue memory. From my experience of working with the human body for almost thirty years, I can fully support these theories. I am convinced that physical, emotional and toxic trauma create these “energy cysts” which establish a disturbance in the energy field affecting the living matrix. This disturbance formulates gaps in this internal communication system resulting in dis-ease. The living matrix gives the body its overall shape and features, defines the form of each organ, tissue and cell and extends into every part of the organism. In terms of bodywork and biomedicine, the most exciting property of the living matrix is the ability of the entire network to generate and conduct vibrations. The totality of these vibrations is what we refer to as consciousness. The living matrix retains a record or memory of the influences that have been exerted upon it. When vibrations pass through the tissue, they are altered by the stored information. In this way our consciousness and our choices are influenced by memories stored in soft tissue. The living matrix has the ability to regenerate or restore itself through the same system, and Bowenwork, among other forms of bodywork, facilitates this process. The Bowenwork practitioner’s precise, systematic and intentional application of gentle pressure to tissue has structural and emotional consequences through the release of both stored memories and toxic substances. The Bowen move, brilliant in its simplicity, causes a build-up of piezoelectric charge and then subsequent discharge into the tissues being manipulated setting the process in motion. These gentle moves tend to be very powerful when performed where there is an overlap of layers of fascia. What is needed is just enough pressure so that the body does not resist and therefore inhibit the response. The release created by a Bowen move produces a type of wave that travels through the body called a soliton, the most well known soliton being a tsunami. What makes these waves unique is that they carry large amounts of energy through the medium of water over long distances without loss of energy. Being that our bodies are at least 75% fluid indicates that the effectiveness of Bowenwork is highly significant. Bowen moves seem to soften scar tissue and unfreeze areas of tissue that have become frozen – possibly as a result of the strong energetic effect of the waves traveling through the body. Our goal as Bowen therapists is to restore structural integrity in the body in order to re-establish its optimum function, which can be done by helping the body to release the energetic disturbance so it can restore the energy field and heal itself. According to traditional Chinese medicine, “life energy” or “chi” must flow freely throughout the body in order to assure a state of maximum health. The concept of tissue memory says that the body’s cells have the ability to retain memories of trauma, including the emotional environment at the time of the trauma.

Volunteering with Wild Bird Rehab Haven is a true labor of love. What started many years ago as a loose network of bird lovers determined to help the orphaned and injured birds that came their way has grown into a solid non-profit organization run by a courageous and compassionate group of volunteers dedicated above all else to the care and healing of Oahu’s wild bird population

Trace the evolution of the organization and you’ll find the original founding group meeting monthly in Kapiolani Park in 2003. Those early days were exciting and challenging. Director Linda Leveen remembers them fondly. “We started with a small but dedicated group and knew only that our ultimate goal was to establish a permanent rehabilitation center here on Oahu. To think of how far we’ve come since our meetings in the park is very exciting”.

Since 2003 WBRH has: Established its 501 (c )3 status as a non-profit organization; opened its first intake center; implemented a creative and inspirational educational program for elementary schoolchildren; participated in the successful rearing of orphaned federally protected shearwater chicks; offered free hands-on training workshops to the public on what to do if you find a baby bird and how to treat basic illness and injury in the wild bird population; created

a bi-monthly newslet ter “ T h e Fledgling”; responded to thousands of calls from community m e m b e r s

needing wild bird help; and became the 2007 recipient of the Honolulu Veterinary Society’s annual Best Friend award. Throughout this time WBRH’s dedicated board and cadre of volunteers (including an extensive island-wide network of home rehabilitators along with the invaluable support of several skilled veterinarians such as Dr. Sabina de Giacomo DVM, Dr. Eric Ako DVM and Dr. Tom Chlebececk DVM) have tended to Oahu’s wild bird population’s needs with true expertise and great care. Countless orphaned baby birds have been raised and hundreds of injured and sick birds have been healed and successfully released back to the wild.

This year promises to be full of change and WBRH is moving forward looking for new leadership. The current director, Linda Leveen, is putting a call out for a new volunteer director who works well with people, loves and is knowledgeable about birds, has rehabilitation experience and is willing to creatively lead an eager group of volunteers toward the ultimate goal of a fully-staffed permanent rehabilitation center. The intake center in Moili’ili will close its doors this May and a new intake/office space is sought until a permanent facility can be established. The group seeks additional volunteers to care for birds in their homes and foster “parents” to help feed baby birds during the fast approaching baby bird season. Permanent homes are also sought for those birds whose injuries prevent them from successfully returning to the wild. Finally land or a house or structure on several acres is sought for a permanent rehabilitation center.

To volunteer, make a donation or learn more about WBRH please call 447-9274, or email [email protected] or visit www.wildbirdrehabhaven.org.

Improve Your Eyesight, Naturally! By Kate Keilman

Tired of glasses or contacts, but don’t want surgery? There are ways to improve your eyesight, without going “under the knife” (or laser). One approach is called the Bates Method, and it’s been around about 100 years.

Author Aldous Huxley was a teenager when he contracted an eye infection that caused a year and a half of near blindness. When he recovered, his vision improved somewhat, but he had opacities in his corneas that left him “overcome by the sense of complete physical and mental exhaustion which only eye-strain can produce,” as he phrased it.

Each year his vision got worse and he feared facing blindness again. “As I was wondering apprehensively what on earth I should do, if reading were to become impossible,” he wrote, “I happened to hear of a method of visual reeducation.” This was the Bates method. He took the plunge and, within a couple of months, was reading without spectacles.

The Bates Method starts with a very simple idea – blink more. People with perfect eyesight don’t stare; they blink every two or three seconds. Blink, pause, pause, and blink. That is normal, natural and relaxing for the eyes. It helps keep them moist too. This is the easiest idea to explain in a newspaper column, but it can be very powerful – some people have managed to stay out of their first pair of glasses by “becoming aware of the stare,” and consciously blinking more until it becomes a subconscious habit.

By the time she was in ninth grade Kate Keilman was wearing glasses for nearsightedness, astigmatism, and had lazy eye. Her vision continued to decline. At its worst, her vision was 20/800. She took a course on the Bates Method, and cut her blurry vision down to 20/80, got rid of the astigmatism and lazy eye.

“Since stress is one of the main detriments to vision, according to Bates and his followers,” says Keilman, “relaxing the eyes takes a high priority.”

She has been teaching classes since 1987. Interested in learning more? Kate Keilman offers free introductory workshops. Call/email for reservations/locations. This past February the FDA ordered all ADHD drug makers to print patient medication guides warning of possible heart and psychiatric risks associated with the drugs. Those possible risks are already noted in the warning labels of all drugs approved by the FDA to treat ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), but the new planned medication guides are “written in language that is more understandable for patients and their families,” the FDA’s Tom Laughren, MD, told reporters in a news conference.

Laughren directs the division of psychiatric products at the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. The FDA’s action isn’t meant to scare patients or their families, he says. “We consider these drugs quite safe, very effective, and in no way are we trying to inhibit appropriate prescribing, “Laughren says, adding that the guides are intended to give patients and their families “the information they need” to weigh the drugs risks and benefits.

Pharmacists will give the medication guides to patients or their parents or caregivers when ADHD prescriptions are filled. The guides will note reports of sudden death

in patients who have heart problems or heart defects, reports of stroke and heart attack in adults, and reports of increased blood pressure and heart rate. The guides will also note the possibility of new or worsening psychiatric problems such as hearing voices, becoming suspicious for no reason or becoming manic. Those psychiatric reactions are quiet rare, affecting about one in a thousand patients.

Talk to your doctor and seek information for yourself on the subject.

Perhaps your child or the patient would benefit of alternatives that treat this condition as well, such as homeopathy, herbal remedies, etc. The key is to educate yourself when it comes to managing your health and the one of your loved ones.

JAN BERNARD, MY FASHION SHAMANby Elaine Valois

I complimented my friend on her beautiful pants. “Where did you get them?” I asked. She told me of Jan Bernard and her hand picked French, Italian, and Island fashions that she lovingly imports and sells affordably, both privately and at fashion events around the island. The next day, over tea, Jan was telling me not to buy yet, but to select colors, fabrics, styles and prints that appealed to me. The next thing I knew we were standing before my own wardrobe culling misfits. What emerged was my personal rainbow, my favorite things dancing to a multitude of possibilities. Jan put me into a whole new dimension about what it means to have a living wardrobe where it seemed anything I picked up mingled in new and interesting ways. She dealt with the full spectrum of how I present myself through color, line and adornment. A few new pieces from her collection then enhanced my now beautiful wardrobe ten-fold. Wow, clutter to clarity. I do believe Jan has invented a new subject of study - wardrobe ecology.

And by the way, I did get those pants I wanted.

Since LASIK was first approved by the FDA in October 1995, it has been regarded as a safe and successful method of vision correction. Even so, you’re not alone if you feel hesitant to move forward with surgery, wondering what future advancements may hold. Pan Pacific Laser now offers LASIK surgery using the IntraLase

Method™—also known as all-laser LASIK or IntraLASIK™—and it could be the very advancement you’ve been waiting for.

How does the IntraLase Method improve the LASIK procedure? The IntraLase Method is a 100% blade-free approach to creating a corneal flap, the thin layer of tissue the surgeon folds back to expose the part of the eye that is reshaped during the LASIK procedure. The IntraLase Method has been shown in clinical studies to provide more patients with vision that is 20/20 or better.1

Prior to the IntraLase Method, doctors created corneal flaps with an instrument called a microkeratome, which is a fine, oscillating, hand-held steel blade. Although LASIK complications are extremely rare, when they do happen the microkeratome is commonly the cause.

The IntraLase Method, by contrast, eliminates the need for a blade at all. Instead, the computer-guided IntraLase® laser delivers rapid pulses of light, a quadrillionth of a second each, to a pre-programmed depth and position within your cornea. Each pulse forms a microscopic bubble. As the IntraLase laser moves back and forth across your eye, the bubbles connect to form a corneal flap. Just prior to LASIK surgery, the doctor gently lifts the flap where these bubbles have created a smooth surface.

This also allows the doctor to tailor-make the flap based on what’s best for

your eye, providing you a greater opportunity to achieve 20/20 vision or better.1

Why IntraLase?LASIK surgery has advanced steadily over the years; the technology used to measure your visual error prior to surgery has become more powerful and corrections can be optimized to your needs. Until the IntraLase Method, however, the creation of the corneal flap was the one step that lacked the technological sophistication of the rest of the LASIK procedure. As it turns out, that step is an important one in terms of providing you with the best possible LASIK experience.

In addition, if you were not eligible for LASIK surgery performed with a microkeratome due to steep, flat or thin corneas, you may now be a candidate with the IntraLase Method. In fact, IntraLase training has become part of the curriculum at most ophthalmic teaching institutions and is rapidly being adopted by eye care practices around the world.

IntraLase® is the most advanced technology for corneal flap creation available today, and will give you greater confidence and assurance in moving forward with laser vision correction. For more information: Call Pan Pacific Laser Vision Center at (808) 949-9200.

Great are the rewards we reap from loving relationships with the animals in our lives. Unfortunately, many people have a pet that does not trust or respect them and the relationship is strained and unbalanced. We all know how distressing bad behaviors can be. Imagine the dog that is not h o u s e b r o k e n , prone to s e p a r a t i o n anxiety, is animal-aggressive, pulls on the leash, barks excessively or only follows commands when it feels like it.

Animal training has changed a great deal in the last few decades. Dog training has moved from a strict punishment-based system, where the dog is corrected by a yank on the collar for not following a command, to bribe-based training where the dog gets a treat or toy for following a command. Both methods can train a dog, but neither is suitable for all dogs and all behaviors. I believe in balanced obedience, where the focus of the training is the language of the command itself followed by verbal praise and touching. We all want a dog that will do what we say, when we say it, off leash and without a bribe in our hand. Most people do not understand how to become the pack leader in their dog’s eyes. The pack leader is calm, self-confident, aloof, fair and respected. A dog can love you without respecting you,

and this is the cause of virtually all bad behaviors. Love and respect are separate emotions in the dog’s mind and to garner the respect of a dog, we need to teach it to be obedient to our commands.

Basic obedience is the best way to have a balanced r e l a t i o n s h i p with your dog. The obedience commands of sit, stay, come, lay down and heel are the basic ones any dog needs to know in order to be able to travel outside of the home in a safe and controlled manner. I want animal owners to have loving, harmonious relationship with their pets.

I specialize in socialization and obedience of dogs and can help your dog become a well-mannered and happy member of the family. I will come to you and teach you and your dog basic obedience

and discuss any behavior issues your dog has and the best training methods for your dog’s age, breed and temperament. I can also train your dog in my home and socialize it with other animals, which is great

for people who would like their dog to improve while they are away on vacation.

Behavior and health analysis are available for all kinds of animals, including cats, horses, birds and exotics. Horse training is also available. I received a BS in zoology with a focus on psychology and animal behavior, and

have been training animals

since 1986. I am a certified dog trainer and have many excellent references. Training is available on all of the Hawaiian islands.

The Orchid Room Wellness Center sits on the second floor of a beautiful native stone building on River Street in Honolulu. The rooms are painted in soft bright colors and the tables are covered in contrasting silks. Gorgeous orchids are everywhere.

The Center offers twelve kinds of massage as well as acupuncture, nutritional and herbal consultations, herbal heat packs and moxabustion. Shiatsu, cranial sacral, lomi lomi, deep tissue, reflexology, reiki, Thai, tui na, sports, neuro-muscular, hot stone and Swedish massage are all available.

The ORoom’s acupuncturists are exceptional. There’s nothing mysterious about their treatments and each practitioner is able to diagnose and treat a variety of health issues, from mild disturbances to chronic, long-term ailments.

This place is perfect for people who are serious about attaining and maintaining well-being. The practitioners are professional, caring, and eager to share their expertise concerning health and rejuvenation. The fees are incredibly reasonable, in keeping with Guenevere’s mission to bring affordable, functional healthcare to everyone. The ORoom is her brainchild, and she practices her own formidable style of OhaShiatsu there. Her diagnostic skills are excellent and her treatments are profoundly healing.

Guenevere also developed the ORoom’s sliding-scale walk-in clinic, open on Sundays and Mondays from noon until 5 pm. Anyone who wants a treatment can meet with Gina Musetti, a highly skilled acupuncturist with thousands of hours of practice under her belt. She is a goldmine of treatment expertise and the lead practitioner at the clinic.

Another great feature of the ORoom is its private practice rooms. Guenevere knows that many practitioners pay most of their income right back to spa

owners and landlords, so she’s made it affordable for healers to develop their own clientele at the ORoom. For a flat fee they can rent a treatment room to make their own practice a reality in a perfect environment. This forward-thinking plan is an important aspect of Guenevere’s Orchid Room Center.

And there’s more. With the monthly Practitioners’ Forum, the ORoom offers its practitioners the opportunity to further develop their skills and knowledge. This is a collective concept that fosters growth by creating an ongoing conversation among professionals to share experiences and brainstorm creative treatment ideas.

The Hawaii Healing Garden - Statewide Festivals start on the Island of Kauai - July 14, 2007. The statewide ethno-botanical festivals include events on Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii-Big Island, in July, August, September, and October of 2007!

The Hawaii Healing Garden Festivals celebrate the multi-cultural medicinal and nutritional plants of Hawaii. Polynesian, Hawaiian, Ayurvedic, Chinese, Filipino, cultural practitioners and ethno-botanists, will share their knowledge of Hawaii’s rich botanical treasures. Featuring lectures, workshops, adult and children’s programs, a Healing Arts Fair and cultural entertainment.

Kauai events begin Saturday July 14 at KCC, Kauai Community College with a fun festival day of speakers, presentations, and healing arts fair with health practitioners, plants and products, and well as healthy food and cultural entertainment.

Sunday July 15th, the events move to NTBG’s McBryde Garden in Kalaheo, with a wonderful day of free tours in the Spices of Life, Hawaiian Canoe Plants, and the Hawaiian Medicinal gardens. Additional herbal medicine and botanical workshops will be held throughout the day.

The rest of the week’s tours and workshops include NTBG-Limahuli Garden Hawaiian medicinal tour & workshop, Ayurvedic cooking, Chinese cooking & medicine making class, organic farm tours, and more, at locations around the island of Kauai.

Visit www.HawaiiHealthGuide.com for a complete schedule and more information on the Kauai, Oahu, Maui and Big Island Hawaii healing Garden Festivals.

Hawaii Health Guide, held the original Kauai Healing Garden on Kauai in 2005, and then created the Hawaii Healing Garden Festival at Waimea Valley on Oahu’s North Shore in 2006. The

events popularity and continued support from sponsors, donations and volunteers, has allowed this educational community event to grow to include all the major islands of Hawaii.

The Hawaii Healing Garden is presented by Hawaii Health Guide with support from the Hawaii Tourism Authority, the Forward Foundation, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, University of Hawaii, Bishop Museum, Inspiration Journal and many other community businesses, organizations and volunteers.

An open invitation is extended to the local and international community of educators, botanists, gardeners, cultural practitioners, health practitioners, herbalists, healers, healthy food & product providers, musicians, dancers, and entertainers, to participate in these entertaining, educational programs and health fairs. Businesses, organizations, service providers, and nonprofit groups are invited to educate, promote their services, and sell their products at health fair booths. And volunteers are invited to help in creating an exciting, and fun Festival for each islands community of residents and visitors.

Sponsors are invited to support the many events and programs statewide and unique to each island. Contributions to this program of festivals help educate and empower healthy communities and nurture sustainable relationships to the plants and the environment.
