This is the story of the Wells Fargo pony named

Mike. Mike pulled a Wells Fargo Express Wagon

in Des Moines, Iowa, in the late 1880s. Mike’s

driver was Mr. Miller. Together, Mike and Mr. Miller

delivered packages to houses and businesses all

over Des Moines, which was a growing, bustling city.

Now, let’s join Mike and Mr. Miller on their route

one morning and learn what Mike likes!

Every morning, Mike and Mr. Miller head to the Des Moines train depot to load their Wells Fargo Express Wagon with goods for delivery.

Mike likes his job, but he doesn’t like the loud train whistle. That’s the only thing Mike doesn’t like. When the whistle blows, Mr. Miller helps Mike stay calm until the noise stops. That’s what Mike likes.

Mike likes the sound of the wagon going across the bridge over the river. “Bump-bump-bump.” That’s what Mike likes.

Market

Mike delivers brooms and candles and candy and hats to the general store. He likes to hear Mr. Quinn say, “Good morning, Mike!” That’s what Mike likes.

Mike likes hearing the singers rehearse in the Des Moines Opera House when he stops there to deliver musical instruments. “La-la-la-la.” That’s what Mike likes.

Mike makes deliveries to the new state capitol building. He likes hearing the clerk say, “Thank you for bringing these important papers, Mike!” That’s what Mike likes.

Because there are a lot of horses, Des Moines has drinking troughs throughout the city. Mike stops to get a drink. “Slurp-slurp-slurp.” That’s what Mike likes.

When Mike fnishes his deliveries, Mr. Miller takes him back to the stable. Mike gets his oats and a blanket to keep him warm. Mike has done a good day’s work pulling the Wells Fargo Express Wagon. That’s what Mike likes most of all.
