The Dressage Judges’ Committee is a Committee of Equestrian
South Australia and frequently reports to the Equestrian SA Board.
The objectives of the DJC are to ensure all Judge and Official re-
accreditation requirements can be met on an annual basis, recruit
new Judges and Officials into the sport of dressage and to
educate our Judges and riders as to the requirements of the sport.

Covid-19 Marshal training Keeping SA Safe!
As you all may be aware, Covid-19 Marshal Training is now available. If you would like to become a Marshal, perhaps if you are volunteering at a future event, the
link is below.
Once you’ve completed the training, please forward your Certificate to the Dressage SA email so we can
keep a database for upcoming events.
https://marshal.clickontraining.com.au/
Transparency is key, so for our members its important to be kept up to date with what our volunteers at Dressage SA have been up too. Here is the link to the dressage Minutes on the Website: https://www.sa.equestrian.org.au/content/dressage-minutes The 2020 Updated Dressage Calendar can be found here: https://www.sa.equestrian.org.au/dressage-sa
The ESA AGM has a confirmed date: Wednesday 14th October. The venue will be Auchendarroch House, Mt Barker, starting at 7 pm.
The Dressage SA Committee would like to say a very big Thank You to Prue Copping and Mary Nitschke for all their time and efforts contributing to the Dressage SA Committee. Both ladies were present at the very beginning when it was just the Dressage SA Working Party, giving us the foundation to become what we are today. Prue and Mary specialised particularly in the Youth Development programs and the organising of events such as the Brett Parbery Clinic, held at Cromwell Park and the Gillian Rolton Youth Development Program, which had some great feedback from our Youth riders. As part of your contribution to the Dressage SA Committee you have both taken time out from your busy schedules to plan, organise and oversee these events and we thank you greatly! Their hard work and dedication made a real difference here at Dressage SA. You will both be missed on the Committee and we wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
Dressage SA
With the upcoming AGM the Dressage Committee has four vacancies. We are a great but small team. If you have skills in governance, communication, organisation or are just interested in getting involved we would be excited to hear from you. Below is the nomination form to be completed and sent to the ESA office by no later than 4 pm on the 9th of October 2020. https://www.sa.equestrian.org.au/sites/default/files/AGM%20ANNEXURE%20B.pdf Send to: [email protected]
The DSA committee has several plans that it is currently working on:
Squad training using the new Pixio System – awaiting the arrival of the Pixio system Gillian Rolton YD weekend creating a weekend that is more inclusive and interactive –
awaiting funding information from the ESA Board. Awards Night: we are hoping to hold a Dressage specific night that will encompass the
HOTY, presentation of Perpetual Trophies and presentation of Dressage Medallions – awaiting ESA Board approval.
Creating a Training Group to promote Dressage training – awaiting funding from ESA
Board. Adding a new HOTY category specifically for Preliminary and Novice horses – details of
this will be forthcoming so watch this space!
South Australia currently has 30 judges, with four Judge Educators and a further seven Mentors. These numbers are minimal to sustain competition in SA and we rely heavily on Interstate Judges, especially at FEI level, to boost numbers for major competitions and JE activities. This generally works well and riders appreciate a fresh perspective from Interstate Judges. Interstate JEs assist our local JEs to give seminars, with shadow-judging and running practical exams. We have worked with local Dressage Clubs to share the costs of Interstate JEs by also offering combined events while in SA and this has also worked well. However, as with all sport in Australia, COVID19 has had a major impact on our ability to run Dressage Judge education events since March 2020. We were fortunate to run an F / G seminar and shadow-judging weekend in early March and a biomechanics workshop was held in February. But since then, local competitions have been cancelled and only in the last month have events re-started, with restrictions to gatherings and the need for social distancing etc. It was welcome that the EADJC made a quick decision to extend this current re-accreditation cycle by 12 months; hopefully that will be a sufficient extension. We continue to encourage riders with dressage experience to consider training as a Dressage Judge and we have a Judge Subsidy Scheme to fund some costs for local Judges for upgrading. It was heartening that in late 2019 there was interest shown by senior riders in the fast-track scheme, with interest from others to also start a Judging pathway. Although some started with the pre-requisites, this was all unfortunately stalled by the advent of COVID19 and restrictions to competitions and seminars.
SA Dressage Judges’ Sub-Committee Report to JE / Mentors Workshop, 14/09/2020
Prepared by Liz Duncan, 31/8/20
We hope to regain momentum with a D / E seminar being held in October. However as noted in recent emails from the EADJC, we are an ageing group and need to attract new Judges. Many riders find the prospect of 5 - 10 years training exams to achieve Advanced level as very daunting and are put off. They are also concerned about meeting the annual requirements to maintain accreditation as riding and coaching takes up time. For similar reasons current Judges find it too hard to upgrade. It is hoped that some re-structuring of the Judge upgrade system and alternative solutions for activities will assist progress and at the same time maintain quality. Unfortunately, we have had to cancel many planned events in 2020, initially due to bushfire after-effects and then due to COVID19. Cancelled seminars include a regional E / F / G, D / E, A / B / C and Young Horse. We are overdue for YH and Para and need these as soon as practical. This will require Interstate JEs but will be limited by which borders are open and whether JEs consider it wise to travel. We are grateful to our Interstate colleagues for running ZOOM workshops and the feedback I have heard is that they are excellent. The speed to technology for meetings and workshops has been a silver lining of COVID19. Being a small State with large distances of travel required for SA members we see this as a change that should continue and developed further. Our thanks to the EADJC for their help and support with our Judging activities during 2019 and 2020.
Liz Duncan
Judges’ Education Opportunities The following Seminars are planned: 1. D / E Seminar – 4 October with Barrie Stratton. The theory
session will be held at the ESA Office: a 9:30 am registration for a 10 am start. The practical session will be at Cromwell Park in the afternoon.
2. The Young Horse Seminar planned for November has been cancelled due to travel restrictions.
Regional Workshop Success On Saturday, 26th September seventeen people attended the Judges’ workshop with Barrie Stratton in Naracoorte. The topic of discussion focused on Protocol days, rhythm, suppleness and contact. The SA Office of Recreation and Sport and Racing made this workshop possible by providing the funding to support regional initiatives.
SA Dressage Judge Activities Update
SA Dressage Judges Committee The SADJC is a small Committee that meets regularly online, with occasional face to face meetings at the office in Mount Barker. The workload is much less than on a Discipline Committee, but still requires a regular commitment, attendance at the Seminars we organise and enthusiasm for the development of Dressage Judges in SA. We are currently looking for an extra member to share the workload. Judges of all levels are invited to express their interest in joining. Please contact Liz Duncan: [email protected].

Southern Vales Dressage Club is a not-for-profit organisation which is located in the Aldinga Sports Complex on Port Road, Aldinga. We run competitions once a month, offering dressage tests for all standards. Our members range from those just starting out in dressage to Grand Prix and professional riders. We also run Championship events, critique days and clinics. We welcome all new members - no matter what level or experience. Even if you don't ride or own a horse, you can still be involved in dressage because helpers are always needed at events to assist with the many tasks involved in running a competition. It's a good way to start getting involved.

SFDC is run from Murray Town Oval.
Murray Town is located in the Southern Flinders Ranges, 12 km south of
Melrose.
In September we had another Official EA / HRCAV Jackpot competition, with
good entries in most levels, although unfortunately there was only one
competitor riding in Official classes - and two riding in the HRCAV Official
Jackpot.
We were very fortunate to have Jen Gilligan judge for us - it is always great to
have a new person giving insight to our members, especially someone of
Jen’s experience.
The Southern Flinders Dressage Club AGM immediately followed the
competition.
- PRESIDENT: again our President is Trudy Mudge, who has done a great
job this year, in very trying times.
- SECRETARY: our Secretary is now Ali Kirkman, who is returning after a
year’s break.
- TREASURER: our Treasurer is once more Merryn Plug Berndt, who does a
great job for our Club.
Due to Covid 19 and restrictions on presentations at competitions, we have
decided to have a Presentation Night / Christmas wind-up evening at the
North Star Hotel in Melrose. On that night we will present the winners of our
Dressage Winter Series (which was completed at the last competition,) our
Club Championships and Show Jumping Series (which will both be finalised in
October) and our Annual Hi-Point Award. If this is a successful evening it may
even become a regular part of our Calendar.
We are ever grateful to the Murray Town Progress Association
for allowing us the use of their excellent grounds - which include
sheds, kitchen and camping facilities.

President’s Report
Hi everyone: It is great to be able to function again with Competitions and our entries have been very encouraging. September was a beautiful day and fun for the Golden Oldies: a special thanks to Rosemary Castle for organizing the wonderful food and prizes and to Jo Lloyd for the wine contribution. Also thanks to Liz Duncan for her expertise in judging that event. Profits made go to the Lindy Wright Memorial Foundation. The October weekend, although not being our usual Spring Festival, should be very productive. The Saturday is a Protocol day and there are lots of prizes from Horseland Mt Barker for the Extravaganza on Sunday’s Official Competition. Horseland Mt Barker have again most generously donated vouchers and rosettes for the Club Champs in November. See the advertisement over the page detailing a special "Penny Stewart Memorial " Trophy Award as well. This will be an annual Perpetual Trophy Presentation but next year will be presented at the Spring Dressage Festival. Other generous Sponsors will be named when arrangements are finalised. A big thank you to Vicki Clark for her time spent applying for an Alexandrina Council Reactivation Grant. If successful this will allow us to contribute to the cost of replacing the guttering on the stable blocks. Kaye Platt was successful in her bid for $1,000 for the Management Committee to make the final payment for this year’s water allocation license. We are very grateful to the Alexandrina Council for this assistance. How quickly the year is flying by. Let's hope we all stay safe and well from the dreaded C19.

CLARE VALLEY DRESSAGE CLUB
NEWS
We have been a little quieter over the last two months due to some very welcome rain which forced the cancellation of our monthly Ruth Clinic. The rain has been a blessing for our oval which is looking fantastic and was terrific to ride on during our August competition. Our August competition saw Judge Michelle Lally providing riders with both encouraging and helpful comments. We had 10 riders competing in Prep to Novice tests. The Live Scoring system again worked well and the Club is looking into purchasing our own tablets. On September 13th we welcomed Ruth Schneeberger back for our monthly clinic at Andrew Boylan’s property. Our members are enjoying riding under the expert guidance of Ruth, with all riders and horses showing improvement and development. If you would like a lesson with Ruth please visit our “Ruth Schneeberger Clinics Clare” Facebook Page On October the 11th we are very excited to be hosting our first Dressage and Unofficial Showjumping competition day. We will be offering jumping rounds from 30 cms to 1 metre and we are looking forward to seeing some of our dancing horses using their talent in the Showjumping arena. Please see the flyer for further details. Entries can be made via Nominate. CVDC is growing and we are currently working with the Clare Horse and Pony Club to explore purchasing a shed to store our equipment and provide us with a designated Club and Member area. Watch this space for further details.

It seems that no sooner did Dressage start up again after COVID
cancellations ... we took our customary Winter break in August. Some
consideration was given to running a competition but the grounds were
deemed too wet. However we have a full programme of competition and
training opportunities planned for the remainder of the year.
A large number of entries were
received for our Charity Day this
month, supporting Adelaide Hills
Koala Rescue. We felt that this was
the best charity to support in light of
the devastating fires at the
beginning of the year. The colours
were green and gold We had some
very creative entries joining the
colour parade. Judging was not easy this year for our Secretary Tina Grech,
with prizes donated by Hobby Horse. All
participants scored a Caramello koala,
giving riders that extra energy boost for
their afternoon rides.
Hobby Horse had a store selling horse
and rider apparel and horse care
products, with a percentage of the sales
being donated to the Charity.
We now have a dedicated Horse First
Aid Kit, very kindly donated by the
Equine Health and Performance Centre at Roseworthy. Our sincere thanks
to their generosity, although we hope we never have to use it.
After some issues with the PA system on two occasions this year we now
have a new one. Barossa Valley Sound and Vision gave us a very good deal
on the purchase price, which was very much appreciated. Please remember
to support those who support your Club.
We have a few competitions coming up in close succession as
we count down towards Christmas. We have a HOTY event in
October with our AGM being run at the conclusion of the day's
competition. In November we are hosting the Dressage SA
Trophy Challenge over two Saturdays and we round up the
year with a CUR Twilight Competition under lights in
December.
Happy Riding and we will see you out there.

November 14 & 28 - Trophy Challenge (HOTY).
Early Closing date: Saturday 24/10
COVID 19 has meant that were are unable to run our State
Championships. But don’t despair: in a unique first for SA we will be
running a State Trophy Challenge. A competition designed to find the
State’s best combination at each level from Preliminary to FEI.
The winner of each level will have their name engraved on the SA State
Dressage Perpetual Trophies for 2020. All combinations (Youth, Pony,
AOR and Open) will compete together for the chance to have their
name on the Trophy. There will also be a separate Award for the
highest placed AOR, Youth and Pony at each level.
The HorsemedSA Hills section of the Challenge
on Saturday 14 November will be the Novice,
Medium and Small Tour component of the
Challenge.
The remaining competitive classes and Young Horse will be conducted
at the Horseland Mt Barker section of the Challenge on Saturday
November 28. We would like to thank these sponsors for
supporting this event.
The Trophies that are on offer are:
Preliminary Trophy - Equestrian SA Champion Trophy
Novice Trophy - Equestrian SA Champion Trophy
Parkfield Float Repairs Elementary Champion Trophy
Wendts Medium Champion Trophy
Eyre Peninsula Dressage Club Advanced Champion Trophy
Prix St George - Marian Malecki Perpetual Trophy
Intermediate 1 - South Australian Dressage Association Trophy
Intermediate 11 - Equestrian SA Trophy
Grand Prix - Equestrian SA Trophy
Youth Rider Novice - Wyebo Skylark Memorial Trophy
Youth Rider Elementary - Jackman Treloar Perpetual Trophy
There will also be CUR competitions available on both
days of the Trophy Challenge.
Nov 14 CUR Competition - closes 24/10/20
Nov 28 CUR Competition - closes 12/11/20
We will finish the year on Dec 12th with an under-
lights CUR Competition with Freestyle tests, Pairs and
Prix Caprilli.
Training Days Our September training day was with the ever-
popular Lucy Williams with the day selling out in
under 24 hours! We managed to arrange some
fantastic weather and participants were able to get
out and enjoy some good sunshine with their horses.
It was nice to see a good mix of horses and riders
with some members taking the opportunity to bring
along some ‘greenies’ to get a bit of exposure in the
stress free environment.
Lucy is always a great motivator and explains the
biomechanics of riding in ways that everyone can
understand. We had a great blend of both poles
and flatwork and there really was something for
everyone! We look forward to having Lucy back in
2021!
We also have some more exciting Training Days
coming up for the rest of the year. In October we
are hosting the ever popular Anne Smith and we
are also hoping to secure Dayle Flynn in November.
Given that it is going to be a really busy end to the
year at MCDC, we probably won’t hold a Training
Day in December. However the Training Day Sub-
Committee are already busy planning for 2021 and
we hope to have some new instructors as well as
our very popular current ones.

Our Horseland Adelaide Indoor Classic in August was not exactly blessed with perfect weather, but the enthusiastic crowd of Dressage fans who came and watched, shopped, chatted and caught up with friends was truly fabulous to see. Some beautiful combinations were judged by our Judges’ panel of Barrie Stratton, Helen Whittle, Pat Hutchens, Graeme Rodda, Rosemary Castle and Shelley Arnold. Great entries of over 100 tests made for some challenges and our very small band of Committee volunteers pulled together to bring the riders and their support teams a Show with a super atmosphere at the beautiful Danson Equestrian Centre. Covid Marshalls and safe practices continue to be in place and our Covid Plan is regularly updated by the SA Government. Please continue to keep SA safe and healthy. Thank you as always to Danson’s owner Heather Currie and her team, who always make sure the property is at its best. If there is anyone out there who would love to help at our Shows, there is no need to be on the formal Committee. Please just put your hand up and we will welcome you warmly and give you a job! The Unofficial arena had a super atmosphere with Shelley and her penciller Jane Berry keeping the competitors ticking along happily all morning. There was an award for the Best Presented Combination and a Harmony Award for harmony between horse and rider. These awards were such positive additions to the Show, with Horseland Adelaide caps being presented to the winners. A mini Trade Village with the beautiful stores of Arena Equestrian, Vivarchie Equestrian and Little Equine Co was set up in the Indoor arena and added to the atmosphere, with lots of shopping bags seen in hands! We hope you all had a fabulous day! The Pencillers and Stewards who put up their hands, some at the at the very last minute, were fantastic and we are very grateful that you gave up your Sunday to be Officials. Again, we welcome anyone who is interested in pencilling, especially riders who can use the experience to learn what the Judges are looking for. Our sincere thanks go to everyone who supported us by purchasing tickets in the raffle to raise funds for the Letitia Linke Foundation in support of Ovarian Cancer Research. We are honored to gift the income from the raffle to this very worthy foundation, given the high number of women who compete in equestrian sport. We are also very grateful to the businesses who gave prizes

for the raffle – you are all amazing! Congratulations to the lucky winners! By the time Moving Forward is out, our September show will have been conducted and we will be planning for our December event. We altered the date so as not to clash with Mt Crawford Dressage Club and therefore stretch the riders’ and Judges’ commitments too far in the same weekend. Series 4 in our “Ask the Judge with Barrie Stratton” is online on our Facebook page and the questions keep rolling in – they are anonymous so please keep them coming and don’t be afraid to ask anything! We really appreciate Barrie taking the time to do this for our rider community. Our 2021 calendar is set and all our Shows will be conducted at Danson Equestrian Centre as our home base for competitions. We have also scheduled some online Critique Shows to keep riders in tune for the higher levels as the year progresses. As always, we will continue to make improvements to our Shows and look forward to having the continued support from riders who just love to come and compete. We are endeavoring to bring an uplifting and friendly atmosphere to Dressage competition and appreciate the positive feedback that we are receiving. Keep safe and stay well.

Thank You We are extremely fortunate to receive some funding from the SA Government, Office of Recreation, Sport and Racing via the ESA Dressage Judges’ Subcommittee to enable us to run a Protocol Day and workshop for South East SA Riders and Judges. Barrie Stratton has agreed to be the facilitator for current and prospective Judges to observe and participate in a lunchtime workshop. Thank you to the Government and ESA Dressage Committee, especially Liz Duncan and Barrie Stratton.
Sadness We are sad for all our Victorian members who due to Covid-19 restrictions are unable to participate at our Club. We know there were a few of you who were looking forward to beginning the Judging journey.
Looking forward to Our first competition, albeit an Unofficial one. A good amount of entries have been received at all levels up to Medium. It’s good to see the momentum returning.
Covid-19 requirements When the call went out for Covid Marshalls, the majority of the Committee put their hands up. So the Club is well positioned to carry out its responsibility for this new requirement.

The next Committee Meeting will be held on Wednesday the 7th October 2020. Should you have any requests or ideas, please contact: [email protected]
Activities planning is on the way for October Club Day - Sunday 25th 2020 November Club day: 22 November 2020 is on the drawing board as a fun end of year celebration. It is
planned to take the form of a Novelty dressage competition, with maybe Freestyles to music, fancy dress and / or a two-up test competition. Are you intrigued? Watch this space for final details.
We are developing a plan to support our major sponsor Radis Estate Wines who missed out on our planned support this year for obvious reasons. The Committee is hoping to put together an order form for their wines as a Christmas gift opportunity.
The January Extravaganza plans are developing with a suggested mirror image plan to help our Victorian members. If border restrictions are still present, we will have the Victorian Instructors who have been engaged from Victoria to instruct at a suitable venue in Victoria and the South Australian Instructors will be used at the South Australian venue. We love the way we can all adapt to changing times.
MSEDC is part way through becoming a Star Club. What is a STARCLUB, I hear you ask. A STARCLUB
Recognition Program was introduced in 2015 which allows Clubs to be better recognized by the
Government and other organizations that value the role a well-run Club can play. The STARCLUB Club
Development Program has been designed for use by sport and active recreation Clubs of all sizes. The
Committee is currently investigating resources they may be able to utilize.

EMERGING FROM ISO!!!!!
The story of a Golden Horse and a Golden Partnership
Duart Rise Bradman Born 9/11/2008 Dam: Northern Chiffon, Sire: Byalee Briar (imp)
Bred and owned by Natalie Roberts from her Advanced competition mare, it was an exciting day when the Golden Child hit the ground. WOW!!! Gold, black points and four white socks - what an amazing start. It was hard for Nat to wait through the growing years to get him out and about. Nat started him and gave him all his training. There were many anxious times with his big personality often getting him into trouble - he was not really one for looking after himself. So big and gorky as a baby, it earned him the stable name of Flee: an oxymoron because he was so big. He amused everyone with his ability to undress himself and lay down and snooze anywhere, even at the busiest of competition grounds like the Werribee State Championships. 2012: Flee won the 4yo Young Horse class at Southern Vales Dressage Club to qualify for Dressage With The Stars. While competing in his class he received a bad knock from a misbehaving horse in his group and was injured so he didn’t finish his round. He had about 12 months off, then returned at the end of 2014 and was prepared for a long list of successes despite the lack of nearby competitions to go to. 2015: he won the South Eastern Dressage Associate Preliminary Championship and won one of his Preliminary tests at the SA State
Championships. He also won the SA Country Championship “Open Preliminary Champion”. 2016: he competed at the SA Spring Championships, Victoria’s Boneo Park and the Victorian Dressage Festival at Novice and Elementary with notable placings along the way 2017: in the Miles Hay Country Classic he was 2nd in the Medium and won the Elementary. At the SA State Championships he obtained Medium level placings of 7th and 5th. 2018 / 19: he started Advanced with several wins at Southern Vales Dressage Club and Lucindale AH&P Society Dressage, with a 3rd in the Medium 4C at the SA State Championships. 2019: he placed 1st in the Advanced at Wimmera Equestrian Club, 2nd in the Advanced at the SA Country Championships, placed in Medium 2nd and 3rd at the SA Spring Championships and had wins at Medium and Advanced levels at the Wimmera Equestrian Clubs Country Classic. April 2019: Flee had his first Prix St George start and a win in the Advanced at Mt Crawford. Duart Rise Bradman has been awarded the Equestrian Australia South Australian Gold medal for Preliminary, Silver for Novice, Bronze for Elementary and Medium, and Silver for Advanced. What an achievement! Then the devastating news in March 2020 when although he was soldiering on with his work, Nat felt things didn't seem quite right even though it was hard to pick. All credit to Nat, who kept exploring to make sure he was right but alas after fooling vets for some time the diagnosis was finally arrived at and Flee the Golden Child with the big personality was … retired due to ringbone. A promising, wonderful career and partnership was cut short. These times are sent to test even the toughest competitor. It was so heart-breaking.
No more will we be able to watch this lovely moving, soft, harmonious combination, showing the correct way of development through the levels. Thank you Nat and Duart Rise Bradman, from all of us who have admired you both. Good luck Nat in looking for a new partner: it’s a very big 17hh frame of personality to fill and to Flee we wish you many summers and abundant spring grasses in retirement.
Enjoy your retirement, Flee. We are sure you will continue to amuse Nat even in the paddock with your little herd of mates.
