Wentworth Nursery School and Children’s Centre

Summer Newsletter: April 2016.

Children’s Learning

The children have been involved in a wide range of exciting and challenging learning

experiences. We have had a large number of children fascinated by mini-beasts.

Some children have been using books and magnifying glasses to extend their

understanding. We also some caterpillars in the nursery to further develop children’s

understanding about the process of metamorphosis. A number of children have also

been interested in exploring how to make a simple circuit as well as others involved

in problem solving ‘how to make a den’. The latter is a great experience in enhancing

children’s understanding about structures, forces and in deed in developing skills in

collaboration as well as using sophisticated tools such as cutters.

Working with parents/carers

It has been really great that we have had a number of parents/grand parents come

into the nursery to work with the children. A huge thanks to Ka’Sharn’s Mum for

teaching our children how to make scrumptious dumplings! Also a thanks to Milla’s

Nanny for coming into nursery teaching our children how to sculpt with clay.

Do speak to your child’s keyworker if you would like to come into nursery and

participate in an activity with a group of children. We would love to hear from you.

Forthcoming Workshops in the nursery from 9.30-10.30am

Friday 29th April: Dr Heather Charles will be leading a discussion about keeping your

child healthy.

Monday 16th May: coffee morning meeting out Governors

Friday 17th June: Cooking with Ben outside on an open fire.

Attendance

We would like to say a special well done to the following children for a

100% attendance from February half term to end of March: Nhyira, Chidera, Giulia,

Joseph, Aqsa, Sarah, George, Malek, Orlaith, Tuba, Lucy, Riyaz, George, Ethan,

Daniel, Joey, Adrianna, Samuel, Caoimhe, Luca, Lawcel, Yusuf, Leon, Salman,

Ephraim, Cain, Jack, Georgia, Zara, Asiyah, Samuel, Ella, and Scarlet. Well done to

all of you. This represents 43% of our school. Our aim is to have over 80% of our

children.

Punctuality

Can I please remind parents and carers to bring your child to school on time.

Coming in late is disruptive to the routine of the nursery and most importantly is not a

good start for you child in terms of supporting their learning

Buggy Store Can I just remind parents/carers to please put children’s scooters on the racks in the buggy store as well as folding all scooters as much as possible. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Fruit A big thank you to all our parents who have brought in fruit to share. Can I remind all parents/carers if you can bring in some fruit to share every week. This is important as it will help raise children’s understanding about the importance of having a healthy diet.

We will be having a tea party to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday on Friday 20th May. All children and parents will be welcome. The time will be from 2.45pm. We will appreciate if parents/carers could bring some sandwiches, fruit or cakes to share on the day! We look forward to seeing you all there!

Children’s Centre update: New staff member:

We are pleased to tell you that we have a new Children’s Centre playroom

member of staff who started in April of this year. Her name is Cecile and she will

be working with Celia in the play drop-ins and crèche.

Every day First aid:

Because of high number of under 3s being admitted to A&E, Wentworth regularly

offers Everyday first aid sessions. The focus of the sessions are head injuries,

lacerations, bleeding, gastroenteritis and fracture, as these are the main reasons

for A&E admittance of children under 3. The Everyday First Aid session, facilitated

by the British Red Cross, is an interactive session designed to build upon the

existing knowledge and instincts, aiming at increasing parents’ awareness in

preventing, and confidence in dealing with emergencies. Common first aid myths

and misconceptions are explored, and reassurance given that in an emergency

something is always better than nothing. The parents attending the session in

March were asked to evaluate their confidence before and after the session; the

average score to ‘how confident do you feel that you can use these skills

effectively in an emergency?’ rose by a whopping 94%! When we asked ‘how

willing are you to use these skills in an emergency?’ the average score rose by

39%, which is also very good! If you are interested in attending one of our first aid

sessions then contact the reception at the children’s centre. We have two 2 hour

sessions coming up in June and July.

Easter holiday outings:

During the school holidays we go on outings, visiting museums and parks, usually

outside of Hackney. This Easter holiday we went to the National Maritime Museum

in Greenwich enjoying free activities for children under 5. We really enjoyed the

Ahoj! section and the Great Map. If you haven’t been there we strongly

recommend you try. Getting there is easy, overground to Stratford, then DLR from

Stratford to Cutty Sark.

During May half term holiday we have planned a trip to Kew Gardens. Contact the

Children’s centre reception if you’d like to join us and ask Ellie and Lovette to put

your name on the interest list. There are limited spaces and those that have not

come with us to Kew before have priority.

We also go to the cinema during the school holidays, this time seeing the film

‘Peanuts’. During the May half term we will be seeing ‘Inside Out’. Tickets will go

on sale the week of 2nd of May. Tickets sell out very quickly so don’t wait!

Family support:

At difficult times, some extra help can make a big difference to you and your family.

Our family practitioner, can offer practical and emotional support dealing with the

following:

Managing children’s behaviour

Helping children through challenging life stages

Low moods or depression

Stressful times

And more

meet with you at home, to discuss your needs and to make a plan. If you would like

to see Mandy please speak to the reception staff at the centre to book an

appointment.

Employment support for lone parents:

We are working with the Volunteer Centre Hackney in providing employment support

for lone parents. If you are a single parent looking for work and in need of support

then call or come to the centre to speak to Katrin who can point you in the right

direction.

about how to support your child’s emotional development followed by a

short Parents’ Forum session. Childcare during session. Book a place with

new baby, getting your baby to sleep, common childhood illnesses and

immunisations and ending with an everyday first aid session. If you know local

parents then please tell them about the course. You can book a place at the

children’s centre reception.
