From the Principal – Denise Lockrey
Welcome back to our new school year! I would like to extend a special welcome to all our new families who
are joining us at Wentworthville Public School for the first time. We hope that during 2018 and your time
with us you will have the time to join in many of our school activities and partner with us as we educate your
child. I submitted the school numbers for 2018 yesterday and we have 578 students enrolled currently at
WPS! With all the building being conducted throughout the community we expect to grow further throughout
the year.
Wentworthville PS 2018 class structure
23 mainstream classes and 3 MC support unit classes for students with disabilities. We had planned for a 3
class projected increased growth, but fell short of the third class growth numbers, due to movement in and
out of the school and we were not aware of until the beginning of the school year. As such, we formed two
new classes across the school and will be only restructuring in Stage 3 to make the 23 classes. Mr Warren,
Mrs Mohanaraj and Mr Wong-See will be the Stage 3 teachers and will each teach a 5/6 class. Mrs
Boersma will be the 4N teacher moving forward from week 4 and the class will be renamed 4B.

Formation of classes
Each year our school enrolments determine the need to form composite or multi-age classes in some
years. Our approach to this is guided by:
The number of students enrolled in a year and where they cannot be accommodated in a single year class
When placing students into composite or multi-year classes the school gives consideration to factors about
each student such as work habits, friendship groups and capacity to be an independent worker. Careful
forward planning at the end of each year occurs with staff in preparing the next year
classes.
Regarding class placement, we are always happy to talk to parents, however, the
placement of students into classes is not something that is changed upon parent
request. It is the school’s responsibility to determine class placement.
Wonderful Happenings at Wenty!
The holiday period was very busy with a lot of properties work occurring on site to improve the school asset
and manage the student population growth! See the entire roof replacement of B Block and scaffold work, the
3 demountable building sited and the happy Year 4 students occupying their rooms yesterday! Mr Wiles, our
General Assistant was a star managing all this work and movement on site and ensuring it all ran smoothly. I
thank him on behalf of us all! ☺

International Competitions and Assessment (ICAS) –
This year our school will participate in the University of NSW Competitions (ICAS - International
Competition and Assessments for Schools).
ICAS is a comprehensive skills-based educational assessment program. All participating students receive a
UNSW Certificate acknowledging their level of achievement. Parents choose to have their children enter
these competitions and a fee is charged to cover the test paper and marking. They are not compulsory.
The tests are held in Terms 2 and 3 and are now offered from Year 2 – Year 6. All money can be paid
online in the ‘make a payment section’ on the Wentworthville PS web site. Please use ‘ICAS’ as the
description for your child’s payment.
This year the tests will be administered BEFORE school in a classroom at Wentworthville PS. It will be
Parents and Caregivers responsibility to deliver students on time out of school hours.
PLEASE NOTE: Students who do not attend testing times will not be made up on another day.
Dates and Prices - Closing date for our school for all competitions is Wednesday 14 March, 2018.
Thank You
Ms Moorhouse - ICAS Co-ordinator

Students are welcome to borrow books from our wonderful school library during their weekly class
library lesson.
Students will need a library bag to borrow. Library bags can be purchased from the uniform shop or you can
purchase your own library bag. (Plastic bags are not acceptable).
Students can access the Oliver Library website from their student portal. They can search
for books and reserve their favourite books from this site. Lots of great websites and
information is regularly updated on the library website.
Borrowing champions- Each week borrowers from each class are tallied up. The class with the most
borrowers over the week is awarded a certificate. At the end of the year the class who borrowed most
regularly are rewarded with a class party and awarded the title ‘School Borrowing Champions’.
Library monitors for 2018 have been selected. They will be announced at this week’s school assembly.
If you have any questions, please ask.
