. flfifle Investigations in Weed Control in North Carolina

.(Hflecfive(s) Many of the objectives of this project will develop from results of presentwork and as progress is reported by other investigators. A number of problems in theproper use ef_dhemicals are of immediate importance. They are as follows:A. Control of wild garlic in pastures.B. Control of wild garlic in small grain.G. Control of annual weeds such as batchelors button, mustard, vetch, cocklebur,

etc. in small grain and corn.D. Further studies on nutsedge (nutgrass), Johnson grass, and Bermuda grass

eradication from cultivated fields.E. Effect of soil fertilisation on effectiveness of chemicals, particularly

2,4sD and sodium chlorate.F. Decontamination of spray equipment.G. Determining volatile effects of various 2,4PD preparations.H. Determining length of time 2,4FD effects remain in the soil.1. Developing or obtaining demonstrational 5 rsfiiinig equipment.J. Probingt otentialities of new chemicals. the last four months two have came

Wozmy‘a ntion. Isoprophyl N—Phen l Carbamate holds promise of killing grass-likeweeds, morass, it is hoped that i may-not kill such plants as tomatoes, tobacco

. Reasons for undertaking Investigations“ (Cont'd on attached Sheet)Reasons for undertaking this investigation are best shown by figures taken

from a 1950 report of the Agricultural Service Department Committee, U. 3. Chamberof Commerce. Figures are not available for North Carolina, however, it is assumedthat they would be proportional. Annual losses are estimated as follows for theUnited States:1. Diseases of livestock (not including deaths from eating

poisonous plants) $250,000,0002. Plant diseases (10 leading crops plus forest trees) $1,190,000,0005. Insect pests of plants and animals $1,125,000,0004. Weeds $5,ooo,ooo,ooo

4. Previous work and present status of investigations in the field of this project: In attempting todetermine the experimental work which has been done in the South, a letter waswritten to Dr. L. W. Kephart, In Charge of Weed Investigations, U. S. Departmentof Agriculture. A part of his letter, dated February 26, 1947, is quoted below.“The Southern States have weed problems that are as difficult as any in thecountry, but there are not more than half a dozen men in all that area whotake much interest in it. Many years ago I did some work on nutgrass at Tarboro,N. C. and one of the forage crops men did some dodder control work at Statesville. So far as I know, that constitutes the history of need research in North Carolina.”Warren Shaw is just completing a Master's thesis on studies relating to the

control of mtgrass, Johnson grass, and Bermuda grass. His work should be continued. The literature on weed control has been sporadic up until 1944, when consider-

able interest was developed as a result of dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. Since thattime considerable work has been done, primarily in the Western and Middlewestemstates. The literature on 2 ,4-D is too voluminous to even attempt a summary here.

Early work done in the South is of particular importance to North Carolina.D. G. Sturkie (1950) , working in Alabama, found that cutting Johnson grass at 1—2foot heights continuously for two seasons probably would kill it. He stressed theimportance of eradication efforts for Johnson grass being conducted from July untilfrost. Horace J. Harper (1950) from Oklahoma, stressed the importance of fall spray-ing with sodium chlorate for Johnson gees.

Murphy, H. F. (1955) working in Oklahoma, reported that two applications ofsodium chlorate or calcium chlorate at rates of 200 pounds per acre each treatment, with treatments July 15 and September 5, gave good control of Bermuda grass. Spot

5. Outline of Procedure: (Cont'd on attached sheet)Time and space will not permit an outline of procedure of obtaining results with

each of the problems. However, two experiments are outlined briefly as typicalexamples. Many experiments will yield conclusive evidence with less complicatedattack. .

treatments for remaining plants are necessary.

Smith, E. V. and E. L. Mayton from Alabama published in 1955, 1958, 1942, and1945 data on nutgrass and its eradication. They reported that plowing or diskingevery 2-5 weeks during the growing season of nutgrass for two years gave 100%control on all soils except poorly drained ones. Where 100% kill is not obtained, remaining plants must be eradicated. In addition, they found that chicken andgases in plots of 1/60 acre wou1d eradicate nutgrass in two year's time. Thegeese were most effective where the area was planted to cotton, and the geese allowedto range in the cotton fields.

Bram, C. A. and Holdeman (1947) working in Louisiana, report controllingalligator weed in sugarcane with 2 ,4—D, and Ryker, T. C. and Brown, C. A. (1947)working in rice fields of Louisiana successfully controlled some_weeds with 2,4-D.
