The pioneer Boyett(e), Gillett(e), Godwin and Kersey families received land grants in the area in the 1840’s. The real influx of settlers, however, began around the War Between the States when the Stanleys and Coopers arrived. Originally called Double Branch for the twin creeks that flowed across the Boyette land, the community was named for the Methodist chapel that stood on the northwest corner of SR 54 and Boyette Road. A popular nickname for the area was Gatorville. Since its founding in 1878, the Double Branch Baptist Church (now the First Baptist Church) has served as a focus for community life. The church has had three buildings in its long history. Henry Ryals was pastor in the first building in 1880, Ed Bryant the second in 1935, and Lynn Foster the third in 1970. The turpentine still and sawmill represented early industries, though cattle ranching and hog farming on the then open range, crop farming and citrus growing predominated. When times were hard people turned to char-coal making and even moonshining to survive. Construction of I-75 and the 1979 opening of the Saddlebrook Resort marked the beginning of the current growth of the community. •

As part of a statewide effort, Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel is launching the Pink Army campaign to generate greater aware-ness about the life-saving benefits of annual mammograms and early detection. When a “soldier” enlists in the Pink Army, he or she receives a set of specialty dog tags. Soldiers have the opportunity to move up the ranks through different missions, like attending or host-ing events, volunteering, or getting a mammogram. As soldiers complete missions, they move up the ranks and receive addi-tional rewards. The dog tags are also good for discounts, specials or free gifts through local and statewide participating vendors.Businesses and organizations can also participate by offering a discount to Pink Army soldiers, holding a Pink Party and putting Pink Army information in their stores/offices. The Pink Army campaign, which began in Volusia and Flagler counties three years ago and has since spread across the state, will be in the Tampa Bay area for the first time this year. To learn more about the Pink Army campaign, sign up to participate or register to offer discounts to soldiers, go to www.JoinThePinkArmy.com.

A Look Into the Life of Paula O’Neil, Ph.D.

Profile

he clerk and comp-troller is responsible for a large number of admin-istrative duties. Not only is she

the clerk of the circuit court, but she also serves as county treasurer, recorder, auditor, finance officer, and ex-offico clerk of the county commission. Dr. O’Neil’s office performs a

wide range of record keeping, information management for the judicial system, and county government. Since the clerk and comptrollers’ duties affect the rights and properties of county citizens, it is essential that the clerk and comptrol-ler remain accountable for her actions. On May 24, Paula O’Neil announced on her campaign Facebook page that she was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer. Her mother

was diagnosed with the same condition when she was the same age, and her brother is a colon cancer survivor. Prior to the diagnosis, Paula did not see herself at risk of getting cancer. Even before her diagnosis, she had been active with Making Strides Against Breast Can-cer in Pasco County. She has been able to continue to work throughout her treatment process. On July ninth, on the same Facebook page where she announced her condition, Paula declared that her surgery

was successful and that she was cancer free.

Tell us about yourself, where you’re from, your childhood and your family. I was raised in the suburbs of St. Louis by wonderful par-ents and three sisters and one brother. My

brother coached my softball team for many years, as I start-ed playing in first grade. I love sports and played on my high school basketball and field hockey teams. I played softball for Southwest MO State U, now known as Missouri State. I worked at Burger Chef while in high school and held various jobs in college, including lab assistant, residence hall regis-tration desk assistant, and front desk clerk at Sheraton. Many of my best memories are going to

Cardinal baseball games with my family. Fortunately, there was a church that sent a bus to my neighborhood to pick up kids on Fridays for Friday Night Club, a fun gathering used to spread the gospel. I started attending when I was in seventh grade. They had a lot of competitive activities and one of them involved collect-ing points for badges for a sash they provided. Points could be earned by good appearance (hair combed, shirt tucked, clean fingernails, etc.), atten-dance, and Bible verse memo-rization. I received the Scofield Bible that year because of the points that had accumulated and still treasure it because it opened my eyes to researching biblical stories and differences in customs and cultures. After college, I moved to Lake of the Ozarks and then to Charles-ton, SC. Saddle-brook Resort moved my family to Pasco and Wes-ley Chapel in 1987. I have two sons who live locally.

Since fund-ing for your office comes from money received through fines, fees, forfeitures, court costs, and true funding has yet to be re-alized, how do you cre-ate a

realistic budget and still maintain compli-ance with state and federal reporting requirements?

We rely on past patterns of societal behaviors to make predictions for future budget years. We analyze data on types of court cases, real estate activity, and Board of County Commission needs, to name a few factors, to determine the man-hours needed to provide the services we are constitu-tionally-mandated to deliver. We also continually monitor office activities and adjust manpower as needed. We use allocations to ensure that time spent on each activity is prop-erly attributed to the appropri-ate funding sources.

A Look Into the Life of Paula O’Neil, Ph.D.

With the complications of multi-faceted dimensions of the Clerk and Comptroller’s office, how do you create and improve operational efficiencies?

The more we can bring into the electronic world, the better we can serve the public. One of my campaign promises was that I wanted to serve the pub-lic “online, rather than in line.” In the last five years, we have implemented eForeclosure auc-tions, eJury reporting, eReports for the judiciary, electronic county payroll and statements, eTickets for red light camera violations, eRecording for Title Companies, and eFiling for Civil cases. We are participating with the other Clerks statewide on the Florida ePortal to accept cases and payments. We will be ready to implement eFiling for Criminal cases as soon as the other jus-tice partners are ready. We are replacing a court case mainte-nance system that was installed in the late 1970s. The Civil side is fully operational and the

Criminal portion is anticipated soon. We are also re-placing our financial system in-stalled in the early 90s with an updated menu-driven software solu-tion. We have also looked at our processes throughout the of-fice. One of the major changes we implemented in 2010 was the creation of a customer call center. Subject area experts throughout the court case types were chosen to activate this solution for the 170,000 court-related questions we re-ceive each year. This removed the phone calls from the floor where other deputy clerks address the public face-to-face and docket court activity.

What new technology helps your office and staff deliver services and manage resourc-es efficiently? In addition to the improve-ments mentioned above, we are using iPads for management. This has helped with meeting workflow and helps us avoid wasting time to duplicate and distribute paper materi-als while saving paper. This also enables the team to have the latest documents at their fingertips during meetings, as well as, historical documents sometimes needed. As they travel throughout the offices, it has proven to be useful and we have found a quicker response time for answers for the public. In our “always on, always connected” world, we have found many efficiencies with this change in our business practice.

How do you and your staff gain insight and knowledge on relevant practices, duties, responsibilities, and standards? We are fortunate to belong to a strong professional associa-tion, the Florida Court Clerks & Comptrollers, with participa-tion of all Clerks and Comp-trollers elected in Florida, and of which I have the pleasure to serve as president this year. Every bill is analyzed from the time it is presented to deter-mine if the proposed changes will have any effect on how we

provide service to the public. We have a Best Practices Committee made up of Clerks and deputy clerks throughout the state who scrutinize and compare workflow processes to determine suggested improve-ments. These are approved by the Executive Committee and presented to the membership for its use. Another organization estab-lished to help with budgeting is the Florida Court Clerks Operations Corporation, of which Speaker Weatherford appointed me to the Council. I have the privilege to chair the Process Improvement and Efficiency (PIE) Committee which analyzes the workflow measures and looks for ways to improve services to the public. We also participate on Supreme Court subcommittees when asked and work closely with other Clerks throughout the state on particular issues.

What inspired you to run for election and re-election in this position? When the former Clerk, Jed Pittman, an-nounced that he would not seek re-election, I decided to

run because no one else from the office wanted to run. With the myriad of duties of the Clerk & Comptroller’s Office, I felt it would be difficult for someone to understand the importance of the constitu-tional duties without having worked inside the office. I ran for re-election because I enjoy serving as Clerk & Comptrol-ler and wanted to continue the electronic transformation we had started.

With a new budget beginning october first, a lot of work and planning had to go into

making it. How did you handle that responsi-bility once you found out you had breast cancer? Our funding comes from dif-ferent sources and we submit over one hundred reports each month to different entities. Because of the complexities of the funding sources and allocations, budgeting never stops. We are watching trends, revenue sources, collections,

investments, account balances, and expenditures on a contin-ual basis. One of our deadlines was June 1st and we had that budget basically ready at the beginning of May. I have a team of experts serv-ing the public every day.

You worked through-out your breast cancer treatment. What treat-ment did you receive and how did you stay upbeat and focused? I was diagnosed in early May and quickly found out that cancer treatment is specialized based on the type of cancer and where it has spread. My cancer was Breast Cancer, Stage 2. I had surgical procedures in June and July and started chemo-therapy in August. I am hoping to complete chemotherapy in October and I have an addi-tional surgery in December. Working took my mind off the treatments and allowed me to focus on positive changes. I have received a lot of support from family, friends, and the community. Knowing so many people wish me well and are praying for me really makes

a difference in the recovery process.

How have your pro-fessional priorities changed since your diagnosis, treatment, and recovery? My professional priorities have not changed, but my health has required me to adjust my personal priorities. I have gotten more rest than I can ever remember in my

life. I have revised my food consumption by adding juic-ing and making more natural choices. Because of the fear of infection during this process, I have been very selective about evening and weekend activities.

out of all the volunteer work you have done, what was the most re-warding? It would be hard to pinpoint one over another because each organization represents a seg-ment of our community that needs help and their missions and approaches to fill the gaps vary so much. I choose my involvement very carefully and ensure that the organizations’ values match mine before get-ting involved. I am very thank-ful that I was involved with the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Relay for Life before my diagnosis so I could know about the avail-able resources and personally knew so many survivors. I believe God put that in place to prepare me for this personal journey. I hope to help with the Reach Out to Cancer Kids

(ROCK) program in the future.

Do you live in Wesley Chapel? If so, how long and where did you move from? When I first moved here from Charleston, South Caro-lina in 1987, I lived in Wesley Chapel. A year of commut-ing to New Port Richey on then two-lane State Road 54 convinced me to move further west. With so many people working for you, how do you keep everyone motivated? I work with a tremendous team of true experts and geniuses who inspire me every day. They think of solutions that are amazing. They are true public servants, always think-ing about how we can better serve the public. They genu-inely care about their work products and demonstrate their desire to live our vision of “Excellence…Always.” I am not certain if I motivate them; they are self-motivated and professional. We have adopted the “Choose Happiness” motto throughout the office, as we know we cannot always control our circumstances, but we can control our reactions.

What would you say are your core val-ues, and have they changed since your diagnosis? My personal core values are centered on faith, family, and my community. They include integrity, professionalism, compassion, personal develop-ment, stewardship, excellence, and respect. My core values have not changed, but rather, have prepared me for this chal-lenge and many others I have experienced.

Having worked in various capacities in Pasco County govern-ment, not including your present position, which was your favor-ite and why? While working for Com-munity Services, I was exposed

to a lot of the true needs of the County. With the combination of human services, elderly nutrition, public transporta-tion, veterans’ services, and, at one time, homeless grants, a different view of humanity is demonstrated. My Director was Adelaide Reyes and she taught me a lot about compas-sion and kindness. I think it was great preparation for me to work within the justice system.

If you could give in-sight to someone diagnosed with breast cancer, what would you tell her or him? God has a plan. We do not know the reason or the outcome, but we can rely on His sovereignty to guide us and His grace to accompany us on the journey. Every person’s battle is individual and he/she must choose his/her treatment options with the help of prayer and medical professionals There are many survivors and fighters who have paved the path to better health – can-cer is a word, not a sentence. Accept help from friends – they want to lighten your burden. There is a timeframe be-tween the second someone is diagnosed and he/she actually has a treatment plan. That is a scary time because you do not have any answers, but you’ve been hit with dreaded news. You are completely reliant on God to carry you through that uncharted path. It is a sweet time in that you know God loves you and wants the best for you, but it is difficult because you want to know what is involved and how long it will take. Personally, I rely on Romans 5:3-4, “Not only so, but we also glory in our suf-ferings, because we know that suffering produces persever-ance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” And, we always have hope! •

t’s flu season again and it is important to know the facts about the flu in order to best protect

yourself and your family. The flu should not be taken lightly. Every year, depend-ing on the severity of the flu strains, between 3,000 to 50,000 people die in the United States due to compli-cations from the flu. Who is most at risk? The elderly and children are most vulnerable to complications, such as pneumonia, that may require hospitalization and sometimes lead to death. Others at high risk of flu complications are pregnant women, and anyone with a chronic disease, such as asthma, heart disease, and diabetes. Preventing the flu is im-

portant. This starts by know-ing how the flu is spread. The flu can be spread by inhaling droplets transmitted through the air when the infected person coughs or sneezes or by touching objects contaminated with the virus and then touch-ing your nose, eyes or mouth. We can help protect others by covering our mouths and noses when we sneeze or cough and we can protect each other by washing our hands frequently during flu season. The flu vaccine is a great way to help prevent the flu and its potential severe complica-tions. Being a pediatrician, I es-pecially encourage the vaccine if your child is in daycare to protect your child and to help avoid spreading the illness to others. Children can spread

the flu for longer periods of time. Children tend to be infectious for up to 2 weeks, whereas adults are usually infectious for 1 week. The flu vaccine is recommended for ev-eryone beginning at 6 months of age, and especially children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those suffering from asthma or any chronic illness. What do you do if you feel you or your child have the flu? Make a visit to the doctor’s office, rest, and drink plenty of fluids. Visiting the doctor makes sure the diagnosis is correct, and also makes sure you or your child do not have any complications from the flu, such as a pneumonia or an ear infection. Also, there are medi-cations available that your doctor or your child’s doctor can prescribe to help with flu

symptoms and help decrease the duration of the illness. Rest and hydration are incredibly important to a quick recovery. Most of us recover from the flu, but complications can be serious. The flu is an illness that affects our entire body. We live in a world where we are constantly on the go, but it is important to slow down and take care of our-selves and our children when we are sick with the flu. • Jose D. A great time was had by all at the Grand Opening of Elements!Club Members were greeted with champagne and a beautiful renovation to their first floor dinning & social area! The theme to the 1.5 million dollar Elements renovation, are the elements that sustain life; Earth, Water, Fire & Air. Entering the Club, I was surprised by the décor’s calming effect. Elegant yet relaxing with soft green hues and subtle lighting. To the right, the private events dining rooms were set up with a beautiful buffet. What a beautiful venue for a wedding Reception, Anniversary or Shower! To the left, the dining area to Elements! Plenty of seating available; Members were enjoying carved steak sliders in comfortable, upholstered, high back chairs. Raised booths along the wall were seating up to six with plenty of room for socializing and sampling new menu creations being passed out by professionally attired service staff. Both lunch and dinner menu have been recreated with extremely tempting choices! Elements is perfect for relaxing and entertaining for business or pleasure. Walking back to the bar and media area, it is apparent that style and comfort wait around every turn; Like the high tables with their own personal television. Each table has the intriguing centerpiece pictured on The Palms News cover representing the life elements theme. During our impromptu tour, member Jean Condrey said these particular tables would be the coveted spots

on game day! In addition there are three big screen televisions making every seat perfect to watch from. Jean and her husband, Bill Condrey, who is the Head of the Board of Governors at the club, have been members for 20 years and have seen many renovations. The exotic fire pits and new lounge furniture on the terrace have them looking forward to autumn evenings after a day on the Links together! Bill and Jean love to travel and play golf together. Bill said of the Tampa Palms course that “Playing this golf course makes you play golf! Play well here and you can play anywhere!” Members of The Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club also have access to all the Club Corp locations around the world!

Chicken Soup for the Soul EvEryonE!By Katy Cox

he way of the foot and hand” is roughly what the

word Taekwondo is translated into from Korean. For Christopher Baluvelt, a 20 year veteran soldier wound-ed by a bomb in Afghanistan, “The way of the foot and hand” would be an inspiring journey for himself and his family. This story begins in 2010 when Chris was an Army Platoon Sargent, via the Con-necticut Active Duty National Guard. He and his men were in Afghanistan doing their job; going into villages making sure everyone was alright and asking if the village was having any Taliban activity. As they were leaving this one village, Taliban soldiers hiding in the village had a bomb hidden in the road and set it off as their vehicle drove over. The explosion was directly under Chris’s seat! “No one was killed, it was a good day” Chris told me. He suffered so many injuries! A collapsed lung, arm nerve damage, broken nose, wrist damage; The vertebrae in his neck and back had to be fused together, pelvis fractured, left foot crushed, left leg suffered a compound fracture. Chris’s

right leg was in such bad shape that later, at Walter Reed Hospi-tal, it was taken off at the knee. Quite a beginning! Most of us would consider what had hap-pened, an end. Chris made it off the ventilator, bones healed, and Chris started adjusting to his new life of being retired at age 45. He, wife Bernadette and their three children, Zachary, Mia & Joe, all relocated to the beautiful community of Grand Hampton here in New Tampa. A lifelong dream of Chris’s has always been to become a Tae kwon do Black belt, but with the constant pain from his inju-ries, Chris thought this dream could be passed down to his son, Zachary. His son was enrolled in the US Tae Kwon Do center, right up the street from Grand Hampton and Dad would take his Son to class 3 days per week. One practice, while Chris was watching Zachary, Grand Master Lee asked him what he was doing; “Nothing” was the reply. Why don’t you try Tae kwon do for just 3 months…? Chris started out just doing hand motions. “Now Chris can kick his pros-thetic leg up and has amazing balance!” says Chris’s mentor, Master Vahid Smith. This past August, Christo-pher Blauvelt traveled to Dae-jeon Korea with Grand Master Lee for the World Tae kwon do Hanmadang 2013. He competed in the Senior III division Power Breaking-Knife Hand. Chris won the Gold Metal breaking 14 stacked bricks with one hit of his right fist. Chris also tested for his Black belt. “I’ve had to face lots of dif-ficulties to keep practicing Tae kwon do, some of them almost unbearable”. Passing the Black

Belt exam with prosthesis was hard, but what Chris said the most difficult was testing bare-footed! He wears custom inserts in his shoes for balance. “There were very tough moments, but I was ready”. I found myself so inspired by Christopher’s story! This hand-some, charismatic, strong and humble, husband and father of 3, through a lot of effort and motivation, managed to stand out among about 3,000 com-

petitors from 43 countries, all of who were without any physical handicaps. The Korean Press was all over him! Grand Master Lee, who is known well and highly respected in the Korean Tae kwon do community, trans-lated for Chris during the many TV and press interviews. Chris says his success comes from his teachers, Grand Master Lee and Master Vahid Smith, whom he practices with!Through US Tae Kwon Do, Mas-ter Smith & Chris plan to bring a group of students to future Hanmadang competitions start-ing next year! The school will be holding fundraiser events to pay for the travel expenses of students. Like Chris, they too will test for their Black Belt in Korea and experience taekwon-do on a world stage. Look for these fundraisers in

future Wesley Chapel Magazine “Events” sections and please support them! Spending time at US Tae Kwon Do has become a “Family Affair” for the Baluvelt’s. Now Bernadette, Mia and Joe join Chris and Zachery. Chris told me that he tells his kids that “This (Tae Kwon Do) is a gift that I give to you (my chil-dren)”. Closing, I want to share with you how Chris sees Taekwondo;

Writen by Yum Hong-chui, the honorary president of The World Taekwondo Hanmadang 2013 in his welcoming address. “It is because Tae kwon do is both a sport and a martial art, that encourages students to walk the human way through physical and mental train-ing. That allows Taekwondo to endure. As you may know very well, prior to technique, Taekwondo teaches the attitude and manners to respect others. This is indeed, one of the most important social values for making the world more beauti-ful”. •

What to DOBedding Plants: Even though temperatures are still warm, begin planting for the cooler months ahead. Dian-thus, petunia, and pansy are good annuals for the fall Bulbs: Plant agapanthus, rain lily, and many varieties of lily now for blooms nextspring or summer. Add organic matter to the planting bed for best results. Herbs: A wide range of herbs can be planted from seeds or plants this month. Some to try are parsley, cilan-tro, chives, garlic, and sage.

vegetables: Plant crops now that will grow and pro-duce throughout the wintermonths. This includes beet, Brussels sprout, carrot, and onion.

What to PlantLawn weeds: The best time to control winter weeds in lawns is before they appear. Pre-emergent herbicides must be applied when nighttime temps are 55°F-60°F for 4-5 days to be effective. Fertilize ornamental trees and shrubs: This is the last month of the

year to fertilize plants that aren’t performing as desired. Controlled-release fertilizer provides nutrients over a lon-ger period of time. Fertilize Bahia and St. Augustine lawns: Choose a fertilizer (not a weed & feed) with little or no phosphorus unless a soil test indicates the need for it. A fertilizer with controlled-re-lease nitrogen will give longer lasting results. This is the last fertilization for these lawn types for the year. Strawberries: Prepare beds and set strawberry plants

Around the Yardthis month. Strawberries also make a colorful and tasty container planting. Either way provide daily watering until plants are established. Winter landscapes: Evergreen hollies and their bright berries add color to the landscape when other plants have died back for the winter. Water well when planting and mulch to minimize weeds. Twig girdlers: Small branches falling from oak and hickory trees may be the work of twig girdlers. To control, clean up and destroy fallen branches. •

Since opening its doors in June 2009, Garden Montessori School has offered quality pro-grams based on the principals and philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori. Our mission

of providing a nurturing environment with an

encouraging, stimu-lating program

allows children to develop skills

necessary to be responsible, productive, independent commu-nity members while being respectful to

themselves, others, the com-

munity and the world as future

leaders.

GMS enrolls children from ages 18 months through Kindergarten offering Half Day and Full Day programs for Toddlers and a Full Day for our Early Childhood pro-gram. Before and After Care is also available. Additionally, VPK is offered during summer months.

We are proud to have earned full accredita-tion from The Florida Kindergarten Council, certifying our academic program, particularly our Kindergarten curriculum, staff and environment. Equally important to GMS, is our Full Membership with the Ameri-can Montessori Society. As the name “Montessori” is not reg-istered, many schools may use it, however are oftentimes not true to the method. All GMS classrooms have Montessori certified and degreed teach-ers. Additionally, children are grouped in multi-age class-rooms, allowing learning from not only the Directress, but through peer teaching as well.

This year, GMS will undergo a re-certification with the National Green School Coali-tion. GMS was the first Early Childhood Preschool in the United States to be awarded as a Gold Seal Certified Green School in 2009 by the Green Business League, Inc., a green technology and best- practices organization based in Plain-field, Illinois.

As a member of The Wesley Chapel Chamber of Com-merce, GMS collaborates with other community members in support of businesses in Wesley Chapel and surround-ing areas. As part of our “Kindergarten Peace Project” curriculum, we help raise awareness in “giving back” in our children. In years past, the children and families have given back by volunteering at a local food pantry and raising funds with car washes and bake sales.

Tours are done daily and can be scheduled by contacting our Director of Admissions at (813) 991-6335 or by email at [email protected]. Garden Montessori is located at 6845 Boyette Road, Wesley Chapel, FL 33545. Website: www.gardenmontes-sorischool.org •

asal allergies called allergic rhinitis affects approximately 14%

or about 40 million Americans. Affected individuals often have seasonal flares of allergies, called seasonal allergic rhinitis. Symp-toms include sneezing, itching, nasal congestion, and itchy-wa-tery eyes. Allergic rhinitis is more than just an annoyance, it also has real consequences. Affected individuals have more difficulty concentrating, sleeping and may have more upper respiratory infections, such as sinusitis and otitis media. Nearly a quarter of affected individuals either miss school or work because of allergic rhinitis. An association of allergic rhinitis and shyness has also been found. Knowing this, what can be done? Correctly diagnosing al-lergic rhinitis can lead to effective

therapy. The diagnosis of allergic rhinitis is best performed by a health care professional. The evaluation, a thorough history and physical exam, may also include allergy testing performed by a board certified allergist. Allergy skin testing, is not only very accurate, but also immediately identifies specific allergens to which the affected individual is sensitive. This information is very important to developing an allergen avoidance plan. Aller-gen avoidance can be helpful for dust mites, animal dander, pollen (trees, grass, weeds), mold spore, and even cockroach. Medications are often needed because total allergen avoidance is not possible. Effective medica-tions include antihistamines, intra-nasal corticosteroids and leukot-riene blockers. Simple measures, such as over-the-counter saline sprays, although not as effective, are safe and are somewhat reliev-ing. Antihistamines have been around since the 1940s. Older antihistamines, such as diphen-hydramine (Benadryl ®) are ef-fective, but are sedating and may impair function, such as learning

and driving. Newer antihista-mines, such as Allegra, Astelin, Claritin, Clarinex, Zyrtec, are both effective and much less sedating. Antihistamines generally work well within an hour, thus are very effective on an “as needed” basis. They are very effective in treating sneezing, itching and runny nose, however they usually don’t really relieve that stuffy nose (nasal con-gestion). Thus they are sometimes combined to certain deconges-tants, usually pseudoephedrine (generic for Sudafed) to give more complete relief. Combina-tion products such as Allegra-D, Claritin-D, Clarinex-D and Zyrtec-D, contain both an antihistamine and an extended release pseudo-ephedrine. However deconges-tants, such as pseudoephedrine, may pose a problem for individu-als with elevated blood pressure or enlarged prostates, by raising blood pressure further or blocking urine flow. Intranasal corticoste-roids (examples: Flonase, Nasacort AQ, Nasarel, Nasonex, and Rhinocort AQ) are nasal sprays that have an anti-inflammatory medicine similar to that found in hydrocortisone cream. This type of allergy treatment is the most effective type of medication to treat nasal allergies by not only relieving sneezing, itching and runny nose, but also by reducing stuffiness. However, they are not maximally beneficial until they are used regularly for weeks and may irritate or damage the nasal tissue resulting in nose bleeds. Thus, all of these intranasal corticosteroids are only given by prescription and the nose should be examined regularly by a health care profes-sional. Leukotriene blockers, of which only one, Singulair ®, has been approved to treat allergic rhinitis. Singulair ® also is not as effective as intranasal corticoste-roids. Allergy immunotherapy (AKA allergy shots), is also known as an allergen vaccine. Unlike medications, it is the only FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administra-tion) approved allergy treatment that reduces allergy symptoms years after a full course of therapy has ended. When an allergic individual undergoes this therapy, he or she receives small, regular

injections of increasing amounts of the allergen vaccine that is “tailor-made” based on specific allergen sensitivities (as found on that person’s allergy test). Al-lergy immunotherapy results in a type of tolerance leading to less nasal allergies and has even been shown to reduce allergic asthma symptoms. It also reduces the need for medications and may also decrease the risk of forming new allergies and/or asthma. To be considered for this type of therapy an individual should be allergic based on allergy test-ing. Potential candidates also have more significant allergies, ex-amples include those that require medications most of the year, have not responded well to avoidance strategies and medications, have both allergic rhinitis and asthma, and/or wish to reduce their need for allergy medications. Allergic rhinitis is not only extremely common but also takes away from our enjoyment of life. Don’t let your allergies control you, take control of your allergies! hear this constantly, everyday, every hour, as Open Enrollment for

Obamacare approaches fast. In spite of the media finally piping up about Obamacare, confusion still reigns amongst the masses. The penalty issue usually comes up in the form of a simple question: Do I have to take an Obamacare plan? The answer is no, you do not, as long as you are fully aware of the alternatives as well as the consequences. In fact, the majority of people on employer-based plans, 60 to 70% by some estimates, will not have to take an Obamacare plan at all in 2014. So, I’m oK with my employer-based Health Insurance Plan? Probably, but a little bit of trivia for the so inclined - did you know that NO other industrialized country has quite this arrangement? It is uniquely American in origin and in modus operandi. We invented it. Our employment-based health insurance system was not the product of a carefully designed health policy. It simply was a byproduct or maybe better stated a loophole, allowed to evade wage controls during Word War II. This is why many people end up working at trivial and boring jobs, trapped for their working career just to pay for health insurance. As long as your employer stays-the-course and continues

to provide decent coverage albeit probably quite expensive, then you need not do anything. Just roll with it until something changes such as a innocuous letter from HR reducing or even worse eliminating your health coverage or all of a sudden you find your hours cut to part-time status making you ineligible for full coverage health insurance. Now you will have a decision to make. What about Quali-fied Health Plans such as Medicare, Medicaid, SSDI, Mili-tary TrICAre, etc? Medicare and SSDI. Again, probably OK for the time being. For example, Medicare Advantage plans for seniors as well as SSDI recipients are very popular. To the tune of over 14 million seniors and disabled people or 28 percent of all Medicare beneficiaries and growing. These plans have a lot of play in how they are designed, changing every year. That is why there is a Medicare Annual Open Enrollment from Oct. 15th through Dec. 7th. To give Medicare beneficiaries time to look at their options. And it is important to note that Advantage plans can never offer skimpier coverage than Original Medicare. Medicaid. Florida as well as many other states opted not to expand Medicaid enrollment and as a result families below federal poverty guidelines will not be able to take advantage of the

new subsidy options available under the new law. Lawmakers “assumed” they would be eligible for Medicaid expansion and did not anticipate the Supreme Court decision allowing Medicaid expansion to be optional. Therefore, families with incomes below the federal poverty guidelines are left in a grey zone with no easy answers at the moment. Tricare. Obamacare has close to zero affect on Tricare, for the simple reason Tricare is governed under a completely separate law. While nobody has a crystal ball, there appears to be little indication that Congress is looking at any changes or reductions to Tricare. I Make Too Much Money! Ok, you are the lucky one! You are self-employed, not eligible for employer coverage, or just making too darn much money. My sagely advice to you is to go make some more! You will need it to pay your health insurance premiums. In Florida, if you make over $45,960 as an individual or $94,200 as a family of four, you are considered “rich” in the federal government's eyes and therefore not eligible for any of the subsidies. Obama was all

about taxing the rich who made over $250,000, but the bar dropped just a tad. The good news is there are still plans available in the private market that should fit your budget. Typically called Catastrophic or High Deductible Plans, these plans strip away many of the least used and more profitable features. They cover you just in case of a serious illness or accident, which after all is what insurance used to be all about. Does your car insurance cover oil changes and rotating your tires? Of course not, but when you end up totaling your car or your body, insurance kicks in where it is best intended. The Penalty! Finally, we end where we began - The Penalty. Should you risk it, go without health insurance, pay the penalty? At $95 per person or 1% of your income in 2014 it is not much, yet. Many people risk it every day and have never had health coverage. Why not you? When you finally have your eventual catastrophic episode and rack up hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical debt, all those folks paying the penalty are sure to kick in their fair share, right? •

The Last Word

“Tough Faith”

Over the past few years one of the fastest growing endurance events in the world has been a new military style adventure race called the Tough Mudder. This 10–12 mile long team race was designed by British Special Forces to test physical strength and mental toughness, and it includes a combination of about 2 dozen obstacles that play on common human fears such as freezing tem-peratures, water, electricity, and heights. The obstacles are very difficult to accomplish alone, so participants must work as a team to overcome the challenges along the way. In a similar way a life of faith can be a tough journey filled with many obstacles and challenging circumstances. Hebrews chapter 11 points out how some of the great heroes of faith such as Noah, Abraham, Moses, and others suffered hardship, endured persecu-tion, and persevered without losing heart. Then Hebrews 12:2 states, “let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” Sometimes people face a situation in life that requires an extra level of inspiration, character, and perseverance. Other times they face a grief, disappointment, struggle, or obstacle that seems insurmount-able without a lot of help from a few friends. If you or someone you know is going through a difficult season when it is hard to hold onto hope or to keep the faith, keep these two things in mind. #1--God loves you and He cares deeply about your needs. #2--Godly people are also willing to lend a helping hand when you are going through the tough times in life. Jeff Olsen is the lead pastor of Grace Community--a new church that meets on Sundays at 10:30 am in the cafeteria at Wiregrass Ranch High School.
