Kevin Sayer

This report covers the activities of Wessex Ringing Group for the years 2016 and 2017. This is our first report since setting up our new group. We are now ringing more birds at Blashford Lakes than anywhere else. We will continue our Spring and Autumn ringing in Christchurch Harbour along with other projects. In 2015 I started a conservation project aimed at recovering the populations of Tree Sparrows in SW Wiltshire and Dorset. This has been a lot more successful than I had originally envisaged – full details towards the end of this report. Many thanks to the Wiltshire and Dorset landowners for their help and support in this important scientific and conservation project. We would like to give thanks to the other landowners on whose land we have carried out ringing operations during 2016 and 2017. At Hengistbury Head we are indebted to Bournemouth Borough Council for their kind permission. Bob Chapman and Jim Day, the Reserve Officers for Blashford Lakes, have given us immense support for our ringing operations at that site for which we are most thankful. We gratefully acknowledge their support and hope that it will continue well into the future.

At the end of 2017 Jack Potter gained his Grade C Licence. He has started tentatively by ringing in his own garden in Poole and also at a wood near to his parent’s home in Derbyshire. He did manage to catch our only Marsh Tit of the year.

The season started off with us donning our waders in order to get through the reedbed. This bode well for a successful Reed Warbler breeding season but unfortunately the wet Spring meant that juvenile productivity was to be low. However, the adult survival rate was again very good resulting in many adults from previous years coming back again to breed.

The winter of 2016-17 was extremely dry which resulted in a reedbed almost devoid of water at the start of the season. This allowed grass scrub to establish itself thus preventing phragmites to re-grow. We also noticed more bramble appearing in the drier areas.

Blashford Lakes - Nest Box Records 2017 by Brenda Cook

I began monitoring the nest boxes at Blashford in 2012 starting with 25 boxes. In 2017, I began with 62. I was hoping that at least half this number would be used. As is usual with nest boxes some birds begin to build and then change their minds, eggs can be laid and some do not hatch, some young die in the nest box and some boxes can be predated. The weather conditions naturally play a big part during the overall breeding season. There also has to be enough food for the adults to feed themselves enabling them to get into good breeding condition as this affects how many eggs will be laid. The food supply needs to continue while the birds are building nests and incubating. Once the chicks hatch there needs to be an abundant supply of caterpillars so the chicks grow and mature and eventually fledge. All this is important to the success of each nest box. Each year Jacki Griffith ( Blashford volunteer) and I go around and check, clean and mend the nest boxes so they are ready for the beginning of the nesting season. I have now managed to get around to putting metal plates on most of the boxes and this has made a huge difference to predation. A gentleman visitor kindly donated some boxes he had made and these were either used to replace old rotten boxes or new sites were found. The young naturalists also made a few boxes and they were used to replace old boxes. This year nest box checking began on 1st April and 2 boxes were found to have lined nests waiting for eggs to be laid. The majority though were either empty or at early stages of nest building. I therefore decided to wait a couple of weeks to let the birds build and begin to lay their eggs in peace. On 15th April 5 female Great Tits were incubating their eggs and other boxes had several cold eggs forming the beginning of a clutch. The next check on 22nd April was really exciting when we found our first Great Tit chicks of 2017 in 6 of the boxes. Great tits are always the first to build and lay. Page 26

Page 27: Wessex Ringing Group Bi-ennial Report 2016-2017 Totals 2016-17.pdf · Wessex RG Bi-ennial Report 2016-2017 Table 1 - Number of birds ringed since 1956

Wessex RG Bi-ennial Report 2016-2017

This year I have had a record number of 12 Blue Tit eggs laid, hatched and chicks ringed in 2 boxes, but unfortunately due to wet, windy and cold weather they did not all reach the fledging stage. This is also the first year I have found the same female Great Tit having 2 successful broods one after the other in different nest boxes. This female was in very good condition, was an experienced bird as she was first ringed as a juvenile on 15.6.2014. The first box she used was the same she successfully used in 2016. She then used a neighbouring box for her second brood. Another experienced and long lived bird is a Blue Tit ringed on 10.5.2014 as a 5F (this means she was born in 2013) and has used nest boxes 3 times. I have monitored each to successful fledging. There was only 1 Nuthatch nest in a box this year and the parents also managed to fledge 3 chicks from this box. I also spotted a Song thrush nesting as we were going round the boxes and there were 4 ringed fledged chicks from this nest. The final result for this year is a total of 35 nest box records. 30 were successful in fledging young and 5 failed at the young stage, due I am sure to the bad weather and not enough food present to feed them on. The metal plates have successfully stopped woodpeckers and squirrels this year from getting into boxes and eating the young. Please see summary table below for results. I would like to thank Bob Chapman for giving me permission to monitor the boxes, Jacki Griffith for all her fantastic help and time which spends monitoring the boxes with me and Harry Shadwell and Sahrah Mai for filling in at different times when Jacki was on holiday. I am already looking forward to Nest box monitoring in 2018.

Reed Warbler Nest Study at Mockbeggar Lake 2017 Report and Photos by Brenda Cook

The first couple of Reed Warbler nests were found on 31st May where we park for our CES project. Each nest had 5 eggs, but they were both predated at the egg stage. I soon discovered that this area was continually predated at egg or young just hatched stage. There are Magpie, Jackdaw and Jay in this area who have a variety of watching posts and fences where they sit and watch the activity of the Reed Warblers. It became very frustrating and disappointing for predation to happen again and again, but these other species had young to feed and of course it is part of nature for this to happen. I began monitoring properly from the 6th June with the help of Simon Garlick for the first few visits until he hurt his back and was unable to continue. The visits took place each week going round all the clumps of reeds which surround the lake. Once chicks hatched I then did extra visits to ring the chicks at the correct stage. My last visit was on 10th August to check that the last pulli had fledged from the final nest. The males sing persistently until they are paired up, then only in the mornings and evenings usually close to the nest from a song post. It soon became apparent that watching using my binoculars and listening to the males was a good idea and I would get an idea of an area where a nest was likely to be. I then entered the reeds by parting them with a stick to minimise too much trampling of stems. The stick was also very useful for gauging depth of water. Once a nest was found I then returned along the entry route placing markers so the nest could be found again I also took a GPS reading for each nest. The only effective way of finding nests is by this method. I was soon able to detect territory lengths and get to know the height to look out for the nests. The Reed Warbler nest is a deep cylindrical cup of grasses, reed flowers and algal threads with plant down, moss and spiders’ webs woven around old and eventually new stems when the new reed growth begins to shoot up. The nest is lined with finer materials. . I was delighted when I was able to notice just a few strands around some stems which meant a nest was beginning to be built. Nest height varied from 50cm to 1m. At all stages and particularly once the young had hatched the adults used a grating churr alarm call and often approached quite closely when I was near to the nest. I always tried to be as quiet and quick as possible when checking and ringing so as not to disturb them for too long. They all quickly resumed either incubating or feeding depending on the stage of the nest. The eggs are laid when the female has lined the nest. Numbers of eggs vary between 2 and 6 laid each day and incubation takes place from the penultimate egg. The eggs are greenish-white variably speckled, spotted and blotched olive, green and grey often concentrated at the blunt end. The tiny young hatch after 9-12 days and were then ready to ring between 6-9 days old at IP (in pin) or FS (feathers short). I found the more chicks there were in the nest it was better to ring at the IP stage because it was much easier to fold up their wings and legs to return them bottom first into the tiny cup of the nest. The next thing I discovered was that Reed Warbler chicks leave the nest before their wings are fully developed. They remain close to the nest hidden in the reeds calling for food to be delivered by the very attentive parents (I successfully saw this on many occasions) until they are able to fly and collect their own food. The weather was particularly hot at various stages of the monitoring. The chicks all survived during this time, but when we had a couple of very wet days I did find a couple of dead chicks where parents had not been able to find sufficient food to keep the whole brood alive. Page 28

Page 29: Wessex Ringing Group Bi-ennial Report 2016-2017 Totals 2016-17.pdf · Wessex RG Bi-ennial Report 2016-2017 Table 1 - Number of birds ringed since 1956

Wessex RG Bi-ennial Report 2016-2017

Adult Reed Warblers are very attentive to their young and both the male and females feed the very fast growing chicks in the nest. Reed warblers can have 1-2 broods and it is said they sometimes refurbish the same nest but I did not find any nests re-used. I am unable to say definitely whether adults did have second broods as this would only be able to be confirmed by trapping and colour ringing the adults which would be very difficult in the reed bed and disturbing for the adults during the breeding season. There was certainly continuous building happening as I managed to find new nests every week. I was able to record 32 nests to completion. 18 nests were successful and 14 were predated usually at the egg stage. I did find other nests at various stages of building, but these were not always completed and could have been the males building loose cock’s nests. All nests that reached the egg stage and beyond are included in the final outcome of the study. It became more difficult to find nests once the new reed growth came through, but it provided more cover for the nests and predation became less and even at the CES parking reeds young fledged successfully. A total of 58 Reed Warbler Pulli were ringed. A really pleasing result was when we re-trapped S970561 during our CES 10 mist netting session at Blashford Lakes on 6.8.17. I ringed this bird as a Pulli in the nest at FS on 3.7.17 from a brood of 3 in a nest in the second clump of reeds to the left of the gate entrance. I received some very exciting news just before Christmas that one of the Reed Warbler chicks ringed on 1st June 2017 was controlled at Kartong Bird Observatory, Gambia. 13 deg. 4min N 16 deg. 44min. W on 22nd November 2017 at 9.30am. The 10.6g Reed Warbler had flown a distance of 4418 Km direction 198deg. (SSW) a duration of 174 days. I know exactly where the Observatory is because I was lucky enough to spend a day ringing with Colin Cross at the Kartong Observatory back in 2012 while on holiday in the Gambia when I had my ‘C’ permit. I have really enjoyed the challenge of a new study. I have learned such a lot about Reed Warblers and would like to thank John Levell for giving me permission to monitor the Reed Warblers at Mockbeggar Lakes. Ibsley Water Black-headed Gull Colony We have been ringing the BH Gull chicks from the Ibsley Water gull island since 2011 and colour-ringing them since 2014. We have ringed in total 338 chicks of which 124 have been colour ringed. (Some of our more recent recoveries can be seen in the Recoveries section of this report). In total 29 chicks have been seen away from Blashford generating 56 separate sightings. These have come from as far away as Spain, Ireland and France. Many thanks to Bob Chapman and all the gull spotters for helping us in this project.

Ferndown Garden Ringing 2016/2017 2016 was an excellent year for finches in my garden. During the first winter period an incredible number of Siskins, Goldfinches & Lesser Redpolls were trapped attracted by the sunflower and nijer feeders. I even managed a couple of Bramblings in January as well. The recently erected nest-boxes attracted a pair of Great Tits and Blue Tits to nest too.

Wessex Tree Sparrow Recovery Project By Kevin Sayer

In 2015 I started a project to help recover the number of breeding Tree Sparrows in SW Wilts. This continued into 2016 with an increase in both breeding pairs and chicks ringed. The table below shows the comparison between 2015 and 2016:-

Chicks Ringed

The project has 2 main objectives: 1. To expand the breeding numbers of Tree Sparrows in this corner of SW Wilts and 2. To scientifically record and ring the chicks in each nest. So far I have been successful in achieving both objectives in 2016. Many of the above farms are on National Trust land and they have been instrumental in getting the habitat right for Tree Sparrows. For 2017, I have continued erecting more nest boxes along with providing supplementary feeding stations at key locations. I only put feeders out from late January to early April – this is what we call the “hungry period” when gamekeepers have stopped putting out seed for game birds and also natural food has dwindled. The following table shows the results for 2017:

Wessex Tree Sparrow Recovery Project 2017

The increase in numbers in 2017 is mainly as a result of increased effort and some additional boxes. There is still room to in-fill the number of boxes along with expanding the project’s area of coverage which we hope to do in the future.
