A collossal battle looms this weekend in Livingston, Ala., as the two teams who have been playing as good as any other team in the conference will meet at Tiger Stadium for a crucial Gulf South Conference matchup. The game will have huge implications for the postseason as well, as the winner will likely be the front-runner for the top seed in the South Region for the 2017 NCAA Playoffs. LAST WEEK Both teams moved to 5-1 on the season last week with big wins against traditional GSC powers. The Wolves shut out the Valdosta State Blazers in the second half, scoring 21 unanswered points to take a 42-13 victory in Carrollton. For West Alabama, the Tigers traveled to Cleveland, Miss. and built a big lead on the homestanding 9th-ranked Delta State Statesemen, then held on to take a 29-26 victory to remain undefeated in conference play. THE COACHES West Georgia is coached by Gulf South Conference veteran David Dean, who is in his first season at the helm of the UWG program. This is his 10th season as a head coach, as he spent nine years at Valdosta State until the 2015 season. Dean is 5-1 at West Georgia and has a record of 84-28 overall as a head coach and is 7-3 against UWA. Brett Gililand is in his fourth season as the head coach at West Alabama. He is 24-15 overall and has a 1-3 record in his career against West Georgia. WEEKLY AWARDS CONTINUE FOR UWG In five of the first six weeks of the 2017 season, the West Georgia Wolves have produced at least one player of the week honor for the Gulf South Conference. The latest to receive the honor is the GSC Offensive Player of the Week, which went on Monday to junior running back Devontae Jackson, who becomes the second UWG player this season to earn that title. Against Valdosta State, Jackson had one of the best games of his career, rushing 21 times for 170 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Wolves to a 42-13 victory. PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS Junior linebacker Malcolm Penny had his best game in a West Georgia uniform this past week in the Battle for the Peach Basket, collecting nine tackles to lead the UWG defensive effort. The Wolves gave up over 400 yards of offense against the Blazers, the most this season, but the yardage was between the 20s, as Valdosta State failed to score in the second half against Penny and the UWG defense. Head Coach David DeanIn late January the University of West Georgia was faced with the task of filling a vacancy as head football coach. The job wasn’t vacant very long. David Dean was available; ready, willing, and eager to become UWG’s 11th head football coach of the modern era. Dean brings a resume to the UWG post that rivals almost any coach in the nation, at any level. Dean is this season entering his 30th season in the coaching pro-fession, his ninth at West Georgia. There is one common thread to his 29 previous seasons: David Dean is a winner. The former wide receiver at Georgia Tech was a key staff member at Valdosta State from 1988-1991. He next spent eight seasons on the staff at UWG, an era that saw the program experience a large number of firsts. That includes the first winning season at the Division II level, the first NCAA D-II Playoff berth, and the program’s first two Gulf South Conference titles. Dean departed UWG following the 1999 season, joining the staff of Chris Hatcher at Valdosta Sate. He spent seven seasons as the Blazers’ offensive coordina-tor, a run that included the 2004 NCAA Division II Championship. In 2007 Dean ascended to the head coaching post at VSU. He had to assemble a coaching staff almost from the ground up as all but one fellow staff member moved on. The results were positive as Valdosta State posted a 13-1 and won the program’s second national championship. Five years later, Dean was back in the winner’s circle again. This time the Blazers lost twice in the regular season, but they were untouchable in the playoffs, averaging 42 points a game during a postseason run to a second national title. How rare is a second national championship? Consider that college foot-ball has been played in the state of Georgia since the 1890s. During that time only three football coaches in the state have won multiple national titles. Erskine Russell won three FCS title at Georgia Southern, while Paul Johnson followed him in States-boro with a pair of crowns of his own. The other coach on that very exclusive list is David Dean. Dean’s run as head coach at Valdosta State covered nine seasons. Beyond the two national crowns, his Blazer teams posted an impressive record of 79-27, including a mark of 42-19 in games played with the nation’s best Division II confer-ence, the Gulf South. His teams advanced to the NCAA Playoffs six times, and Dean’s postseason head coaching record is 12-4. The success of Dean’s Valdosta State program resulted in numerous indi-vidual plaudits. He captured American Football Coaches Association Division II Coach of the Year honors following both national titles. He was also named 2007 Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year, and GSC Coach of the Year in 2010. Beyond his individual success, Dean’s VSU players captured the highest of honors. His VSU teams had 18 Division II All-America selections, while 10 players signed National Football League contracts. Dean also coached three players who earned GSC Freshman of the Year honors, two league players of the year, and one national defensive player of the year. Clearly, David Dean has been linked to success throughout his 30-year coaching career. At UWG or at UWG’s biggest rival, the results are irrefutable: David Dean is a winner. His teams win and his program flourishes. As Dean begins his first season at UWG, he is following the most suc-cessful three-year run in the history of the Wolves’ program. Few coaches have the gravitas to continue, and even increase that level of success. Dean is a native of DeKalb County in the metro Atlanta area. He was born in Decatur, and enjoyed a stellar high school career for the Avondale Blue Devils. Dean arrived at Georgia Tech as a walk-on in 1982, but was awarded a scholarship the following season. He played wide receiver for the Jackets through the 1985 cam-paign. Married to the former Stacie Stott, the Deans have three daughters: Caro-line (20), Allison (18), and Natalie (12).

Wolves At A GlAnceHead coach David Dean said it best at his weekly press conference on Wednesday. The Wolves enter the seventh week of the season with a fourth-straight week with their backs against a wall. UWG comes into the game with a 5-1 record this year. West Georgia has won three straight since suffering a 17-7 loss at Delta State on September 16, and the Wolves feature the top offense in the GSC with the sec-ond-best defense in the league. Sophomore quarterback Willie Can-dler leads the way for the Wolves, as he has connected with 17 different receivers overall this year and has a Gulf South Conference leading 12 passing touch-downs to go along with that. Candler and junior running back Devontae Jackson each have been named GSC Offensive Player of the Week, with Jackson earning the title with a 170-yard, three-touchdown effort against Valdosta State in the Battle for the Peach Basket last weekend.

tiGers At A GlAnceThe West Alabama Tigers have been through the fire this season and have come out relatively unscathed so far this season. The Tigers come into the seventh week of the year with a 5-1 record overall and a 4-0 mark in GSC play. UWA is coming off of a huge road victory against Delta State last weekend, building a 22-7 lead in the game, then hold-ing off the Statesmen for a 29-26 victory. West Alabama has the second-best offense statistically in the GSC this season and the third-best defense. The Tigers are led by junior quar-terback Harry Satterwhite, who had his first playing time against West Georgia two years ago, where he was 11-of-24 for 144 yards and two touchdowns. He is 156-of-277 on the year with nearly 1,500 yards passing. On the ground, the Tigers have Lakenderic Thomas, who is fourth in the GSC in rushing with 66.3 yards per game and seven touchdowns overall, which is tied for the conference lead.

This Week in the GSC Another week in the Gulf South Conference and three huge battles that have implications for both the GSC crown and the NCAA Playoffs are on the docket, headlined by a top-25 battle between West Alabama and West Geor-gia. For the Tigers, this is the second-straight week with a top-25 matchup, but their first at home and for UWG, this marks five straight weeks against an opponent that has been ranked in the top-25 this season. In Pensacola, Delta State looks to rebound from their first loss of the 2017 season last week to West Alabama. Standing in their way is the West Florida Argonauts, a team that has just one loss in GSC play thus far, but picked up a big road victory over Florida Tech two weeks ago. The state of South Carolina will host another big battle between the North Greenville Crusaders and the Florida Tech Panthers. Both teams would need to win out to have a shot at the 2017 playoffs and this week could be the start of that. NGU will be joining the Gulf South Confer-ence next year and was the 2016 South Region runner-up, falling to UNA in the title game. North Alabama heads on the road to Georgia for the second time this season, this time against Shorter, and Valdosta State looks to rebound from last week’s loss at home against Mississippi College.

Rogers Breaks OpenWolves fans have been waiting to see what #43 Korie Rogers was truly capable of, and in the fifth game of the 2017 season, they got to see it. The starting linebacker for the first five games of the year, Rogers came into the UNA game with just 13 tackles on the year, with his most coming at Delta State on the road. Against the Lions last week, the former Buford high standout and transfer from Clemson was everywhere on the field, collecting a single-game high of 12 tackles. That tied the most for any UWG player in a single game this season, as safety Montrell Pardue also had 12 against Delta State earlier this year.

Against the PassThe Wolves have been especially stingy against the pass through the first five games of the year, allowing just 138.8 yards per game through the air. That is good enough for the Wolves to have the 8th-best defense in the nation against the pass. West Georgia picked up two interceptions against North Alabama last weekend, giving the team three on the year. Cam Magee and Ramon Patton had the picks against UNA.

Gardenhire almost thereRedshirt freshman defensive end Deandre Gardenhire has started the first three games of the season, winning GSC Freshman of the Week in Week 1, and having a solid season thus far. He was instrumental in West Georgia building a 14-0 lead early in the game against North Alabama. The Camden County native had two sacks early in the game, and one of those also gave the freshman a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, setting up the Wolves’ second touchdown of the day.

Dominant DefenseThe defensive line has been getting better each week, and it seems that a different player shows what they can do on any given week. First, it was Deandre Gardenhire, followed by Jay Johnson, then Chad Price and Chris Lewis before Gardenhire had another big game last week against the Lions. The big thing to notice about those names is that none are more than a sophomore thus far in their collegiate career. Price and Johnson are each sophmores, while Lewis and Gardenhire are each in their first year of collegiate football. Through the first five games, those four players have accounted for 10 of the Wolves’ 18 sacks.

Turnover Game Stepped UpHeading into the North Alabama contest, the Wolves had just two forced turnovers in the first four games of the year. Montrell Pardue had an interception in the first game of the year and Cam Magee had a fumble recovery against Albany State. The Wolves added four to that turnovers forced number against UNA, picking up two fumble recoveries and two interceptions. Deandre Gardenhire and linebacker Malcolm Penny each had a fumble recovery in the win over the Lions. Magee and safety Ramon Patton had the interceptions. Magee’s interception was returned

for a touchdown, but he was ruled out of bounds at the UNA 34. The very next play ended up being very big for the university, as Travis Custis broke off a 34-yard touchdown run with a hurdle over a player that ended up as the No. 1 play on SportsCenter on Saturday evening.

Top-10 in the NCAAAgainst North Alabama, the Wolves gave up 300 yards for just the second time this season, although it was 301 yards of total offense in the contest. West Georgia is in the top-25 in six different categories heading into the West Alabama contest this week. The Wolves are the eighth-best team against the pass nationally, allowing just 138.8 yards per game through the air. UWG is now 16th in the nation in total defense this week, allowing 295.3 yards per game on the year thus far.

Under 250Three times this season, the West Georgia defense has allowed less than 250 yards in a game, with the Miles game coming in as the least yards allowed with 196. No opponent this season has gone toe-to-toe with the UWG defense and picked up their season average for yards. The biggest discrepancy in that was against Alany State, where the Wolves allowed 207 yards of total offense, which is 167 yards less than their current season average. Against Fort Valley State, the Wolves allowed 90 less than their average, followed by 68 from Miles and 50 from Delta State. UNA was the smallest number, as the Lions average seven yards more than the 301 yards allowed in the game.

Moving Up in the RankingsAfter returning to the rankings last week following a win over North Alabama, the Wolves jumped six spots in the D2Football.com poll, moving to 17th place in this week’s poll. West Georgia was 25th in last week’s American Football Coaches Association poll, and with the win over Valdosta State, moved up to 23rd in Monday’s poll. The Wolves have now been ranked for four weeks this year.

Explosive PlaysThe West Georgia skill players have been making high-light-worthy plays throughout the last two weeks. First was Travis Custis with the leap against North Alabama, vaulting the safety and rumbling 34 yards for the score. Devontae Jackson had a thrilling 47-yard touchdown run against VSU, as he looked to be bottled up in the back-field, but found the sideline and took it to the house. Deniko Carter weaved 32 yards for a diving touchdown last week and Shaq Roland went up the ladder in the end zone last week for a two-yard touchdown pass.

Wiggins Moving UpWhile freshman kicker Trey Wiggins earned recognition as the GSC Freshman of the Week in the second week of the season, he has just recently begun to come into his own as a kicker, as he continues to kick from longer dis-tance each week. Against North Alabama, the freshman from nearby Heard County nailed a 35-yard field goal, the longest of his career thus far. He is tied for 11th nationally in field goal percentage at .857 and is 6-for-7 on field goals this year. With extra points, he s 26-of-27 on the year. A Potent Return GameThe Wolves are strong in the return game through the first three games of the year, led by Devontae Jackson and J.J. Jones. Jackson has been electrifying on kickoff returns and Jones has been equally outstanding on punt returns. With 4.3 speed, Jones easily pulled away from the defense against Miles for a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown in Week 2 of the season. It was that return that earned the Mississippi native the Gulf South Con-

ference Special Teams Player of the Week, his career first weekly award since transferring to UWG two years ago. Jones had a 52-yard return last week against VSU, which moved him into the top-10 nationally in punt returns.

Jackson All-Purpose WatchJunior running back Devontae Jackson has been an All-Gulf South Conference performer as an All-Purpose back in each of his first two seasons at UWG. This season, he is third in all-purpose yardage, averaging 117.6 yards per game. He now has 3,524 career all-purpose yards, and last week became he sixth running back in school history to rush for 2,000 yards in his career. Two weeks ago against UNA, Jackson had a weaving 39-yard reception that moved him into fifth all-time at West Georgia in all-purpose yards. He comes into the week needing 476 yards to become the fourth 4,000-yard man at UWG.

Leading ReceiversSeventeen different receivers have come away with at least one catch during the first five games of the year, with Shaq Roland leading the way with 26 receptions for 316 yards. Emoni Williams is second on the team with 21 receptions for 269 yards on the year. Senior Deniko Carter leads the team in touchdown receptions with three after his 32-yard weaving touchdown catch against Valdosta State last weekend. Eight different players have at least one touchdown reception this year.

Vaughan Watch 2017Senior offensive lineman Harley Vaughan stepped up to the top of the UWG record books last week against Valdosta State, as he started his 46th game his career at UWG. Vaughan was a redshirt freshman for West Georgia in the 2014 season and went to the semifi-nals twice, starting every game in-between. He passed former teammate Marcus Sayles last week with his 46th career start.

The David Dean era begins in 2016 after a solid run over the past three years. Just seven years ago, West Georgia went an entire season without a rushing touchdown, and in the past three years, the Wolves have produced a top-10 season in school history. In the 2016 season, the final game of the year gave West Georgia a lot of momentum on both sides of the ball heading into 2017. The Wolves had 52 carries for 336 yards and five rushing touchdowns in that contest, the eighth time in school history that UWG had five or more rushing touchdowns in a single game. In the 2014 run to the NCAA Semifinals, the Wolves put up more than 3,000 yards rushing for the first time in school history, shattering both the yards and touchdowns record by more than 700 and seven, respec-tively. The 2015 season was more of the same, with the Wolves eating up yardage to the tune of another school record of 5.1 yards per carry. Prior to Hall’s ten-ure, there had been no 1,000-yard backs in the previous 10 years, and the Wolves have had a back eclipse that number in each of the past three seasons. First, it was Seth Hinsley in the 2014 campaign, followed by Devontae Jackson in 2015. Last year, Lamarcus Franks became the 11th back in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, hitting for 1,009 yards as a senior.
