N E W S L E T T E R VOL. 54 P.O. Box 425, West Hempstead, New York 11552-0425 SUMMER 2013
Looking Forward Together……..
West Hempstead is a beautiful community with residents who are
caring and involved. We have accomplished much when we
worked together with our elected officials to bring improvements
to our community. This is best exemplified when the Town and
our residents came together to have a beautiful Library built
befitting our community. We all worked tirelessly to see a seedy
motel demolished and to have the necessary zoning changes
made to enable a beautiful luxury apartment complex to be built
on the property. Again with community support and the support
of our elected officials we celebrated the grand opening of the
New York Equestrian Center. The only Equestrian Center on the
South Shore now stands where an aging, crumbling horse stable
existed. Everyone put their heart and energy into making these
improvements in our community. But, like anything worthwhile,
it takes cooperation, time and the ability for Government and
residents to work together to make good things happen.
We are now in the process of working together with Nassau
County and our Nassau County Legislator Vincent Muscarella to
complete the final phase of improvements scheduled for Hall’s
Pond Park, especially the cleaning of debris from the pond.
Sandy wrought havoc everywhere on Long Island. Although we,
in West Hempstead, were fortunate to not have the massive and
destructive flooding which occurred in many communities, the
October and February storms delayed much of the anticipated
work on Hall’s Pond Park. It also became apparent that the
storms added to the cleanup due to toppled trees, many branches
broke off the trees and were blown into the pond, as well as trees
that were weakened which had to be removed We have been
patient knowing that working together with our Nassau County
officials, the pond will be cleared of the sand bar and debris,
seeding will be done where grass is needed and other
maintenance items will be addressed. This week the Nassau
County Department of Park Maintenance have begun the first
phase of the clean up and we anxiously await the ultimate
removal of the “sand bar.”.
Our membership year begins on June 1; a membership
application is on Page 11. We need your membership and
donations…all of which are fully tax deductible…in order for us
to continue to provide community programs and beautification
efforts. Only through your membership and donations made by
local businesses and organization are we able to provide the
following: : American Flags gracing Hempstead Ave., flowers,
plants and decorations for the decorative planters along
Hempstead Ave., free Music in the Park series, a Children’s
Holiday Party, discount fuel oil program, this newsletter “News
& Views”, Community Service Awards, the Memorial Day
Parade, the Fall Street Fair, and community meetings. The entire
Executive Board serves without any compensation for their time
and effort. In addition, we attend Town Board and Zoning Board
hearings, various conferences to promote West Hempstead, and
community functions to lend our support. We need your
membership and donations to function. If you have already
joined, our sincere thanks; if you have not yet joined, please do
so today and ask your friends and neighbors to join as well. Last
year we had approximately 700 families and businesses join, we
need to have far more members in order to continue to bring to
you all of these programs and events.
We are still in the process of getting the final draft ready for the
West Hempstead World Trade Center Memorial so that we can
start the process of putting it out for bids to determine how much
money we will need. The Memorial is to honor all who perished
on September 11, 2001 and to stand as a tribute to those who
lived within our community. So far we have received a donations
totaling just over $2,000. Norm Kaish will be heading our fund
raising committee. Please contact the WHCSA at 733-0879 to
find out how you can help.
Remember to “SHOP LOCALLY” and help our businesses
thrive. Please patronize our advertisers, since their ad help
defray the cost to print and mail this newsletter.

WH Community Support Association
2013 COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
RECIPIENTS
The West Hempstead Community Support Association has
awarded high school seniors with a $500 Community Service
Award in recognition of their service to our community almost
since its inception in 1995. The award committee, comprised of
seven members of the WHCSA Executive Board, was so inspired
by the efforts of our young and dedicated applicants that it was
decided to recognize three students with this honor. This year’s
award recipients are Steven S. Trezza, Christopher T. McAvoy,
and Devin T. Rockensies. Each of the recipients will be presented
with a check at the WHCSA Community Meeting which will be
held in the West Hempstead Library Community Room on June 11,
2013 at 7:30 pm. All are welcomed to attend and congratulate our
winners.
Steven S. Trezza has passionately served our community as an
environmental ambassador to children and adults regarding the
serious hazards of storm water runoff pollution. His green interests
evolved into the West Hempstead Storm Drain Project, in which
volunteers donated 350 hours placing 900 “No Dumping- Drains to
Bay” medallions on storm drains. In an effort to further raise
awareness he conducted an educational presentation at the WH
high school, and set up set up informative displays at our local
street fairs. We also salute Steven’s commitment to our
community by volunteering for the summer reading program at the
West Hempstead Public Library, as well a variety of local non-
profit organizations including the West Hempstead Rotary, Lions
club, etc.
Christopher T. McAvoy has become a piece of our town’s story
by helping to preserve the history of our town since 2010.
Through Christopher’s tenacity he enlisted the help of the West
Hempstead Historical Society President, Town of Hempstead
Historian, Village of Hempstead Library Special Program’s
Coordinator, and others to help him create two posters delineating
the history of West Hempstead-- complete with archived maps,
photos, and media. His efforts were honored by County Legislator
Muscarella, and AP Educator Santarelli submitted the posters to
the NYS Archives Competition, where it won further merit!
Preserving and educating those about our town with a big heart
fostered several public library program’s titled, “West Hempstead
Then and Now”, and “Helen Duryea Remembers…”. Among his
many other initiatives, Christopher created the West Hempstead
Historical Society Facebook page, www.facebook.com/
WestHempsteadHistoricalSociety. We hope you check it out!
Devin T. Rockensies has been volunteering in our community for
years. As the President of the St. Thomas Youth Group he is
involved with volunteer programs for The Ronald McDonald
House, soup kitchens, The Inn (a local homeless shelter), and local
beautification efforts. Devin’s commitment to help our community
went far beyond his own expectations after Hurricane Sandy
destroyed the homes of many in Island Park, leaving them without
the basic essentials, including transportation. His outstanding
efforts to help those in need included organizing clothes, canned

Valedictorian – Caroline Moyer-Laurin
Caroline is described by her teachers as one of the top student
leaders. Tireless, independent, ambitious, compassionate,
enthusiastic and fearless are all words that can be used to describe
Caroline.
Caroline was voted president of the National Honor Society, a
two year role which requires a talent for organization,
implementation and delegation of duties for a host of service
activities in the school district. For two years, she was captain of
both varsity tennis and badminton and was a motivating force for
her team mates. Caroline is a member of Athletes Helping
Athletes, a service and leadership group. For example, Caroline
helped organized a portion of the 8th grade orientation program at
the high school. She helped plan a set of ice breaker games for
200 students from two different middle schools to get to know
each other. Caroline also participated in the “7 Habits of Highly
Effective Teens” mentorship training program and currently
mentors a freshman student. Caroline possesses a passion for
helping others; in particular she enjoys tutoring and teaching.
She has devoted many hours over the years to voluntarily tutoring
neighborhood students. This past summer she was very busy
working as a counselor-in-training at a YMCA camp upstate and
taking two college courses at Oxford.
While leading this challenging extracurricular life, Caroline has
maintained an “A+” average in the most rigorous curriculum
available at West Hempstead High School and has earned the
position of number one ranked student and valedictorian of her
class. Teacher reports indicate that she is a superb student who
serves as a role model for her peers. Her serious sense of purpose
and focus combined with her stellar intellect will enable Caroline
to excel in her future endeavors. Caroline plans to attend
Wesleyan University in the fall and we wish her a bright and
successful future.

2013 Salutatorian Anna Chen
Anna Chen, West Hempstead High School’s salutatorian, is
described by Jillian Tammany, her school counselor, as a well-
rounded student who has a bright future ahead of her. Her
humble demeanor combined with her maximum-effort attitude
creates a very impressive young lady.
Anna is clearly gifted in her academics, but her commitment to
community service is what truly sets her apart from her peers.
Anna is a youth leader in CAAAV, an Asian community-based
organization that works to build the power of low income Asian
immigrants and refugees in New York City. She travels by train
to Chinatown on a regular basis to attend meetings and lead
workshops. Anna lights up when she speaks about her
involvement in CAAAV. She has found a way to change
people’s lives and bring light to any injustice within the Asian
community. Anna’s intentions are admirable and inspirational.
In addition to her outstanding community service, Anna is a
valued member of the varsity swim team and varsity bad
badminton team. She is also involved in the National Honor
Society, National Art Honor Society and Mathletes. Anna’s
impeccable time management skills allow her to have a positive
impact on many of the students in her high school.
Anna has earned an impressive 101. 14 grade point average. As a
senior, she has elected to challenge herself with more college-
level courses and is continuing to thrive. Ms. Tammany
described her as excelling at every aspect of high school and the
type of student who makes everyone in the class better.
Anna can be expected to flourish at the collegiate level; and, will
make a big difference in the world. Congratulations to Anna
Chen and our wish for a successful future.
goods, and crates of water. His
experience with Sandy’s devastation
and the true need for help inspired him to drive survivors back to
their homes with these much needed supplies.
The West Hempstead Community Support Association is proud
of these students and all of the other applicants who volunteered
so much time to make West Hempstead a better place to live.

A Look Back in Time
By Yossi Azose
The grand opening of the revamped New York Equestrian Center
on Eagle Ave provides an opportunity to highlight some of the
more illustrious moments in horseriding history in West
Hempstead. That history dates back to time when the horse was
still the preferred mode of travel to get around. Some time
around 1910, the first riding school in WH was started by famed
horse-riding circus star Josephine DeMott Robinson on her farm
on Hempstead Avenue near Johnson’s Lane. Robinson knew a
little something about riding, as she was purportedly the first
woman in the world to
perform backwards
somersaults on a moving
horse. Robinson continued
this operation until 1917 when
she sold her farm and moved
to Hempstead Village.
In 1922, WWI veteran Paul C.
Lienhard moved to WH and
opened the Lake View Riding
Academy at the corner of Oak
(ford) St. and Woodfield Rd.
Lienhard was a captain in US
Army cavalry division and
after the War, he had been
working as an instructor at the
US Army’s cavalry school in
Ft. Riley, KS before moving
east. In the 1920s, members
of the military community had
increasingly viewed the use of
horses in the Army as outdated and questioned their usefulness
in battle when tank divisions (“mechanized cavalry”, as it was
called then) were the order of the day. Ever the horseman,
Lienhard sought to prove the usefulness and durability of the
cavalry by embarking on a solo cross-country horseback ride,
literally cross-country, from New York to Los Angeles. On a
warmer than usual winter day on December 13, 1927, the 37-
year old Lienhard mounted an Army mare named Black Bess
and left the Malverne train station for a 3,700-mile ride to the
West Coast. Twenty five days into his trip, after averaging about
42 miles a day, he paused briefly in St. Louis to talk to a United
Press reporter about his expedition and continued on his way.
Seventy seven days later, while cantering through the Arizona
desert outside Yuma, Black Bess was bitten by a huge
rattlesnake. The old mare wavered but within 20 minutes, she
dropped dead, 180 miles short of Lienhard’s goal.
In 1931 Lienhard moved his riding school to Mill Road
(Peninsula Blvd) in Hempstead to be closer to the bridle trails
that were laid down in the new Hempstead Lake State Park. His
was but one of half a dozen riding academies and stables that
sprouted up along Mill Rd. in those days. Lienhard counted
among his prize students Gen. Chen Cheng, Chief-of-staff to
Chiang Kai Shek and his representative at the UN, and two-time
Academy Award winning actress Luise Rainer. (Parenthetically,
Luise is still alive today and at 103 years young, she is currently
the oldest surviving Oscar-winning actor).
The current stables on Eagle Ave. dates back to 1926, according
to County records, shortly after the deal was announced to
develop Hempstead Lake as a state park. In that year John
Wellbrock opened the Paramount Riding Academy. In the
1930s, ownership was turned over to Charles Heinsohn who
renamed it Lakeside Riding Academy, a name that survived until
about six years ago.
Though by WWII, the use of
horses in a military capacity
was all but obsolete, the
cavalry would have one more
opportunity to prove their
efficacy in the war effort, and
Lakeside Stables played a
central role at the time. In
June 1942, Americans were
shocked to learn of a botched
Nazi infiltration at Amagansett
by four German saboteurs who
had swam to shore from a U-
boat, a plot that would later be
known as Operation Pastorius.
The incident set the entire
region on edge and highlighted
the need for a civilian patrol
along the hundreds of miles of
Long Island coastline. On
August 3, in response to a call
by the Coast Guard to set up regular patrols along LI’s shores, a
group of 50 expert horsemen, many of whom were WWI cavalry
veterans, met at the Lakeside Stables and set up a staging area
there. These patrols were an important component in defending
the Homeland from any further enemy infiltrations.
Like a candle that flickers bright before it burns out, the
beginning of 1943 brought conventional transportation-by-horse
into major prominence one last time, after fuel-rationing during
WWII was the cause of a pleasure driving ban in the East Coast
region. Long Islanders had to get creative to get around.
Following the lead of the Hempstead High football team, many
local schools hired out horses and wagons to transport their
sports teams to their games. Theaters, restaurants and bowling
alleys built hitches out in their parking lots for their horseback-
riding customers. It would be the last time that horses would be
used for conventional transportation to that degree in our area,
before finally giving way to cars and motorized vehicles, and the
numerous stables on LI at the time played a major role in
providing horse-transportation during the WWII fuel shortage.
In 1954, Peninsula Blvd. was laid out between Hempstead and
Rockville Centre and thereafter, one by one, the old stables and
riding academies that lined Mill Rd. closed down. Lakeside
Stables is the only one that remained.
In later years, Suzanne Benedict and Brian

McTigue partnered to run the Stables, until
they sold it in 2006 to the current owners, Alex Jacobson and
Benjamin Haghani. The initial plan was to redevelop the site into
condominiums, but after recognizing the value of the stables to
the community, Jacobson and Haghani opted instead to rebuild
the stables into a world-class facility, as the newly minted NY

The WHCSA and A Look Back in Time wish Mr. Jacobson and
