Dr. Reid is Principal of the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), University of London. The oldest and largest veterinary school in the world, the RVC recently ranked as the top school globally in the prestigious QS World University rankings. The UK’s only independent veterinary school, in 2017 the college came first in the National Student Survey of all UK universities. An alumnus of the University of Glasgow, he became one of its youngest professors in 1996 and dean in 2005 before moving to the RVC in 2011. Reid is recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons as a specialist in veterinary epidemiology and in veterinary public health by the European Board of Veterinary Specialists, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His research interests are focused on zoonotic disease and antimicrobial resistance. He has over 160 scientific publications, most recently in PNAS and Science, and he has secured over £15M in competitive funding during his career. Reid was President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) from 2014–15, a year which saw the launch of a new Royal Charter, the introduction of the courtesy title of “Dr” for UK veterinarians, the embracing by the College of its international diaspora, and a far reaching overhaul of its 50-year-old governance structures. In addition, two major initiatives – Vet Futures and Mind Matters were initiated and he ran the 2015 London marathon to raise awareness and $20k USD for mental health issues in the profession. He has also been president of the European College of Veterinary Public Health and honorary secretary of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, in both cases the first UK national to hold these positions. In his public service, he has been a trustee of The Donkey Sanctuary since 1996 and Chairman of Trustees since 2007. The charity is now the largest of equine welfare organisation worldwide. He is a Trustee of the University of London and sits on the Board of the Food Standards Agency in the UK. Reid has been recognised for his work by industry (Pfizer, Petplan Charitable Trust), the profession (the British Veterinary Association’s Wooldridge Medal and the Dalrymple-Champneys Cup), his alma mater (the McCall Lecture, University of Glasgow) and his scientific discipline in the UK, EU and USA. LARRY ALEXANDER, Managing Director, Professional Services Division First Financial Bank

Larry Alexander is the Managing Director for First Financial Bank, responsible for the $200M Professional Services Division for one of the nation’s top lenders. His team specializes in the pharmacy and veterinary segments of healthcare, and are one of the most active lenders in the country, growing revenues by 71% in 2018.

Alexander’s previous 15 years were with McKesson Pharmaceutical, most recently as Vice President of Independent National Accounts. Previous roles included District Sales Manager in St. Louis, where he led sales teams from multiple distribution centers across seven states in the Midwest. Prior to that, he was hired on full time as a Retail Sales Manager in southeast Texas, after completing the Operations Management Development Program as a summer intern while still in college.

His proven results and leadership in healthcare range from having served on several boards, multi-billion dollar negotiations, mergers, and new program development. He is also a sought-after industry speaker with an entrepreneurial spirit, being the co-founder of a non-profit.

Mr. Alexander joined McKesson in June 2002 after he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Distribution from Texas A&M University. Larry and his wife Shelly have three daughters, Gracie, Anna and Lucy, and live north of Houston in The Woodlands, Texas.

Dr. Barron has been CROW’s Medical & Research Director and Head Veterinarian since late fall of 2011. She received training in exotic and wild animal medicine and surgery through a residency at the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine, where she later became a tenured Associate Professor on the Zoological Medicine Service. She obtained further international experience as Professor and Department Head of Clinical Medicine at St. Matthew’s University, School of Veterinary Medicine in the Cayman Islands, where she was also the veterinarian for the Cayman Turtle Farm and Cayman Wildlife Rescue. She has served as a consultant for both IDEXX and Antech Imaging Services and is a former president of the Association of Avian Veterinarians. She is a board certified avian specialist, Certified Aquatic Veterinarian and a licensed wildlife and sea turtle rehabilitator who has over 20 years of experience in practicing and teaching wildlife medicine. She has authored or co-authored over 100 scientific publications in her field. She and her husband, Andrew, live on Sanibel Island with their three children.

Dr. Cavanaugh (Scruggs) received her Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida and then earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University. After graduation, Dr. Cavanaugh completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. Then, Dr. Cavanaugh completed a residency in cardiology and Master of Science at Colorado State University and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Specialty of Cardiology. Dr. Cavanaugh practiced small animal cardiology in Denver, Colorado and then Fort Myers, Florida prior to joining the faculty at RUSVM in 2017.

Dr. Cole graduated from the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1998. After completing a residency in radiology at the University of Tennessee, he served on the faculty at Texas A&M University and as imaging director in a specialty practice in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Fogle is a Clinical Associate Professor of Equine Surgery and Service Chief at North Carolina State University, College of Veterinary Medicine. Callie received her DVM from Louisiana State University College of Veterinary Medicine, and completed her equine surgery residency at NC State. She is passionate about providing state of the art care for horses in a collaborative learning environment, and answering relevant clinical questions that serve to advance veterinary care for the horse. In her free time, she enjoys extremely competitive games of kickball with her children.

Dr. Gingerich was born and raised in South West Florida. He is a true Florida native at heart and loves the outdoors. As the son of a veterinarian, Wade developed an interest for the welfare of animals at an early age and decided to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

After receiving his veterinary degree (DVM) from the University of Florida in 2003, Dr. Gingerich entered private practice for six years. During his time in general practice, Dr. Gingerich realized the need for increased levels of oral care for animals. In 2009, he returned to graduate school at the University of Minnesota and entered a three-year residency in dentistry and oral surgery (DAVDC). In 2012, Dr. Gingerich successfully completed the residency and passed a rigorous three-day examination to become a diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College.

After spending seven years in the Midwest, Dr. Gingerich decided to return to Florida to provide exceptional oral care for companion animals in the community where he grew up. His compassion for all animals and the bond they share with their caregivers is evident in his daily practices. This has transcended into the trusting and caring relationships he has with all his clients and their pets.

Dr. Fogle earned his veterinary degree from Ross University in 2000. He completed a small animal medicine and surgery internship at Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. In 2005, he completed a small animal internal medicine residency at NC State College of Veterinary Medicine and he is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. In 2009, he earned his Ph.D. in immunology from NC State and is currently an associate professor of microbiology and immunology at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He teaches immunology in the veterinary professional and graduate curriculum at NC State. As the head of the Comparative Immunology Research Laboratory, his research focuses on immune dysfunction in AIDS lentiviral disease and cancer. He is the past director of the Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting core facility at NCSU and is currently the faculty advisor for Clinical Immunology and Flow Cytometry at North Carolina State University.

Shelley Johnson is the Senior Manager of Training and Education for Patterson Veterinary, where she works with veterinarians, managers and sales teams to reach their veterinary practice management potential. She has 30 years experience working in the veterinary profession with over 20 years dedicated exclusively to practice management. She has been trained through Carew International and is a facilitator of Dimensions of Professional Selling (DPS) and is a certified DPS Coach for that discipline. Entrusted by the veterinary profession as a valued educator, coach, speaker and consultant, Johnson provides knowledge, experience and guidance to elevate others and their teams. She continues her educational quest as a current Doctoral scholar of Executive Leadership at University of Charleston West Virginia. She continues to be an active member and consistent contributor of VHMA whereas receiving the distinguished 2015 President’s Award. She is also the 2014 Past President of VetPartners.

Dr. Loes is a veterinarian with many years of experience in private practice. Responsibilities currently include the development and delivery of interactive and engaging continuing education presentations for veterinary professionals, informational seminars for pet and horse owners and mentorship of veterinary and veterinary technician students. Dr. Loes is a Senior Technical Services Veterinarian, Continuing Education Coordinator, and a Field Support Specialist and Educator with Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences, Inc.

Dr. Mason holds a degree from Ross University, School of Veterinary Medicine and a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences from the University of New Hampshire.

Over the past 13 years she has gained expertise in private practice but has always struggled to find a way to make a bigger difference in the veterinary industry. After having euthanized so many pets and developing compassion fatigue, she decided to leave private practice to work for the ASPA Animal Poison Control Center. She then moved to QC in 2007 where she worked in the industry for several years before starting her own company in Pharmacovigilance.

In 2016, she joined the Euthabag team, as their mission to provide respect and professionalism to our beloved animals, their owners and the veterinary team, is a concept she sincerely believes in. She brings a strong sense of compassion and understanding of the difficulties surrounding the euthanasia as well as a passion in educating others on compassion fatigue.

Sara Kaufman is a Ph.D. student at Purdue University studying communication related to the human-animal bond and veterinary medicine. Formerly the Communications Manager for Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts, she holds her M.S. in Communication from Portland State University with an emphasis on language and social interaction. Her master’s thesis focused on humane society communication. She is currently researching human bereavement related to companion animal loss and the narratives of veterinary medicine. She has presented her research on the human-animal bond at the International Communication Association and at the University of Oxford, England.

Dr. Morton is Service Chief and Clinical Associate Professor of Large Animal Surgery in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences and Medical Director of the Large Animal Hospital at the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She is a large animal surgeon and directs the Equine Lameness and Imaging Service in the large animal hospital. She attended the University of Florida for her undergraduate studies, and completed her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Morton completed a large animal rotating internship at Washington State University, a large animal surgical internship at University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center, and her large animal surgical residency and Master of Specialized Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University. Dr. Morton became board certified in large animal surgery in 2004, and in equine sports medicine and rehabilitation in 2012. Her clinical interests include equine sports performance and rehabilitation, lameness, imaging, and orthopedic surgery. Dr. Morton’s research focuses on equine osteoarthritis, orthopedic imaging, and colic. Dr. Morton is active on several committees, including the credentialing examination committee, for the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Dr. McAbee obtained his DVM from Colorado State University in 1999 and has been a passionate veterinarian ever since. His never-ending thirst for knowledge and self-improvement lead him to complete a general internship at VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital in 2000. This year in L.A. solidified his desire to become a board certified veterinary surgeon. He then went on to complete a one- year surgical internship in Jacksonville FL at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists. This intensive year launched him into one of the best and most rigorous small animal surgical residencies in the country at The Animal Medical Center in New York City. He finished his residency at the AMC in 2004 and then stayed on staff for an additional year teaching other surgical residents and honing his skills. Dr. McAbee became board certified in small animal surgery in 2006 and has been practicing this “art” of surgery along the Front Range of Colorado for most of his career.

After spending time as a small animal surgeon in three different specialty hospitals along the Front Range, Dr. McAbee decided to launch Spire Veterinary Surgery in 2015. Dr. McAbee’s vision for SVS was to be able to provide the highest quality specialty surgery to dogs and cats without those patients and owners having to leave the comfort and trust of their family veterinary practice. Dr. McAbee considers himself extremely fortunate to be a veterinarian and treats each patient as if they were his own pet. His experience has led him to understand that each animal is different in their own way and he strives to establish a connection with them, their owners, and their veterinarian to provide the best treatment possible.

Dr. McAbee has vast experience in all aspects of veterinary surgery including orthopedic, neurologic, and oncologic surgery. He has advanced training in minimally invasive orthopedic surgery such as arthroscopy and has published and lectured nationally on this topic. Dr. McAbee has been performing Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomies to treat canine cranial cruciate ligament deficiency since 2005 and has performed thousands of these procedures. In addition to TPLO and other orthopedic procedures, Dr. McAbee enjoys the challenge of oncologic (cancer) surgery and has years of experience in this extremely difficult subset of veterinary surgery. Dr. McAbee is also a consultant and instructor for Arthrex VetSystems and frequently teaches courses and lectures on stifle surgery to both general practioners and board certified surgeons around the country and world.

MICHAEL ROBBINS, DVM – NutritionDr. Robbins is the Scientific Communications Specialist with Hill’s Pet Nutrition. He earned his DVM at the University of Tennessee where his interest in clinical nutrition burgeoned. He then pursued a small animal rotating internal medicine and surgery internship at a BluePearl in Louisville, KY. From there, he spent two years completing his residency program in small animal clinical nutrition at North Carolina State University. Dr. Robbins stayed on with NCSU for an additional half year gaining further experience before becoming part of the Hill’s family.

Dr. Sample is a veterinary clinician scientist and small animal surgeon at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. After graduating from Northwestern University in 2004 with a degree in biomedical engineering, she came to UW-Madison, where she earned her master’s, DVM, and doctoral degrees. Dr. Sample continued her clinical training at UW Veterinary Care as a rotating intern and small animal surgery resident. In 2015, she received a prestigious 5-year K01 independent mentored research award from the National Institutes of Health to study the genetic basis of laryngeal paralysis in the Labrador Retriever. Since then, Dr. Sample has spearheaded the establishment of the Comparative Genetics Laboratory at the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. She is currently an assistant professor in small animal surgery and a co-director of the Comparative Genetics Laboratory team.

Kim Spelts originally received a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering Sciences. After spending time working for NASA and then in the corporate world, she went back to school and earned her A.A.S. in Veterinary Technology and achieved CVT status. She initially worked as an emergency technician then joined the Anesthesia Department at Colorado State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital where she trained veterinary students, interns, residents, and other technicians in anesthesia. She became a Veterinary Technician Specialist in Anesthesia in 2004. Kim started her own business, PEAK Veterinary Anesthesia Services, in 2013. She strives to advance anesthesia knowledge and standards of care through advanced training and case management. Kim is a past Western Veterinary Conference Veterinary Technician Continuing Educator of the Year. She also co-authored the AAHA Anesthesia Guidelines for Dogs and Cats and is a contributing author to Anesthesia for Veterinary Technicians and Pain Management for Veterinary Technicians and Nurses. Kim was the President of the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Anesthesia and Analgesia from 2016-2018.

Dr. Shokry has been with Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine since 1989. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Shokry advises the student Integrative Veterinary Medicine Club (IVMC). He completed a post-doctoral research fellowship with the Department of Pharmacology, Guy’s Hospital Medical School in London, U.K. In addition, he was a visiting scientist at Iowa State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, and has been appointed as a research affiliate professor at Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, FAU in Florida.

WENDY WHITMORE, MBA – Veterinary Business Management

NATASHA WERPY, DVM, DACVR

Dr. Werpy graduated from Colorado State University (CSU), College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed an internship at San Luis Rey Equine Hospital, followed by an imaging internship with Dr. Norman Rantanen. She went on to an imaging residency with Dr. Rantanen and CSU, and became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Radiology. She was on faculty at CSU from 2004-2012 and at the University of Florida from 2012-2016.

Natasha is a private practice equine radiologist, and is a consulting radiologist for numerous different practices and several universities. Natasha’s focus is on clinical equine diagnostic imaging, specifically musculoskeletal imaging with an emphasis on MRI and ultrasound.

Wendy Whitmore, MBA and Chief Learning Officer at 4MedPlus and 4VetCE, has more than 20 years of experience in training management, strategic planning and business continuity consulting in global healthcare environments. She regularly presents on unique business skills topics at conferences and through accredited industry workshops.

Ms. Whitmore expanded the 4MedPlus learning community to incorporate veterinary specific training through 4VetCE, producing AAVSB-RACE approved credential- based educational content. Her oversight of course development specific to veterinary professionals, represents a philosophical and strategic initiative to establish a holistic learning environment across the entire healthcare continuum.
