    Birds of America book

    sale draws local attentionBYKEN GRABOWSKI

    ASSOCIATE EDITOR

MANISTEE Earlier this month, theworld watched with great fascination asa four-volume set of James AudubonsBirds of America set a world record forthe sale of books at a Sothebys of Londonauction when it was purchased for $11.5million by fine art dealer and bird enthusi-ast Michael Tollemarche.

That sale drew some interest locallybecause the Manistee County Library hasa copy of the book that was made fromthe original plates, but it is also a partialcollection and not worth anywhere nearthe same value as the original four-volumebook that sold at the London auction.

Manistee County Library ExecutiveDirector Charles Haemker said that thelibrary board has also been watching whattranspired in that sale and making surethey are taking good care of the local copyof the book.

We are looking at additional steps thatwe need to take to secure our copy thatis not of the same value the one that wasauctioned, but we feel that it is prudentto investigate some additional optionsand investigate the appraisal costs, said

Haemker. We want to get an estimate ofthe appraisal cost, and my expectation isthat the board will probably go ahead toget it appraised.

We have looked at some things of try-ing to improve the lighting in that gallery, but we really cant improve that light toomuch because the ultra violet rays affectthat book.

So we have been talking with the facil-ities committee about trying to get lightsthat would protect the book, and just let inthe filtered light.

Haemker said that some members ofthe board have been approached by thecommunity about the book after realizing

the auction was taking place at Sothebys.I know that some of the board mem-bers were approached by people who have

seen it or heard about it and inquired tothem about our book, said Haemker.Last time that we had it appraised it was

valued at $240,000 to $280,000, but thatwas five to six years ago. With the cur-rent auction we feel it is prudent to checkthings out.

It is a treasure to Manistee, and is inour care. The board understands it is acommunity treasure, and we want to beprudent in protecting it.

When the original book sold atSothebys, it set off a four-minute bidding

war that ended up with Tollemarche win-ning ownership of the book in the end.Two other people were bidding on the

book, with one speaking in Italian over

one of many special phone lines that wereset up for the occasion. The other bidderTollemarche sat in the front row at theauction.

Tollemarche has worked in the Londonart market for more than 40 years. He saidthe purchase was purely to enjoy the book,

but he also said the chance that he wouldresell it was still a possibility.

I intend to enjoy it for however longI am able to enjoy it, Tollemarche told anews service reporter.

The book originated when Audubontraveled from France and created the 435life-size bird watercolors that he turnedinto the Birds of America. Eleven of the

200 or so copies of the book are owned byprivate individuals and they rarely go upfor sale.

fter the latest purchase of an Audubon Birds of America book, the ManisteeCounty Library is looking at additional steps it will need to take to appraise itspartial copy.

Onekama student Morgan Brown and Manistee ISD student Nathan McDonaldwork intently on a math problem.

Bridges are being builtt Onekama Consolidatedchools, and not as apartf the recent renovations ofhe school building.

Through a collabora-ion forged by Onekamaeacher Laurie Blevinsnd Manistee ISD teacherngela Froncek-Joseph,nekama High Schooldvanced algebra studentsave joined together withtudents from the ManisteeSD younger moderate cog-itively impaired classroomo work cooperatively on

    ath.The YoMOCI classroom

    s comprised of students

ith autism spectrum dis-rder and cognitive impair-ents. Their classroom wasoved into the Onekama

chool building this fall. Inn effort to help her stu-ents with the transition,nd to help them assimilatento the OCS commu-ity, Froncek-Joseph put aequest out to the Onekamaeaching staff asking ifhey had an opportunityo extend their teaching tonclude her students.

Laurie Blevins, whos currently completinger student teaching atnekama High School, nswered the call.

I was very excited toork with Angelas class, ecause everything I haveeen studying in my educa-ion classes this year sup-orts the value of mentor-

ng from both aspects, saidlevins. I went to Angeland we worked out a timelot during advanced alge-ra. I picked three studentsho would not be affected

y missing a half hour of

    nstruction every week.Three Onekama fresh-

an Claire Harvey, rittany Trombley, andorgan Brown are invit-

d into the YoMOCI classvery Friday to assist somef the students in theirath labs.

Math is a difficultubject for many stu-ents, reports ISD teacherroncek-Joseph. The highchool girls do a great jobt breaking it down step-y-step to help the students

nderstand what to do.The positive outcomesf this mentoring projectxtend far beyond math-matics.

This is one of myreams coming true, statedroncek-Joseph. To havether students working with

Bridges of Manistee CountyOnekama High School-Manistee Intermediate School District

mentoring program provides valuable student connections

my students. The benefitsare noticeable. The highschool students learn thatsomeone with a disabilityin my classroom is learning

what the other students are, just at a different pace. My

students interact with theirpeers, and look forward totheir weekly visits.

    Blevins reiterated theaffirmative results.

To be a student teacherand have my mentorteacher (David Baldner)

back me on this projecthas been wonderful, saidBlevins. It has been alearning experience for meand I have been able to helpin the ISD classroom withthe girls as well. The girlslook forward to seeing their

students every week andeven eat lunch with themsometimes.

The high school stu-dents quickly formed ties

with the ISD students, andwere eager to report all thatthey are gaining from theinteractions with their newfriends.

My favorite part ofworking with the ISDstudents is seeing howhappy they seem whenthey finally get somethingright or understand what

were doing, said BrittanyTrombley. Im gainingknowledge on how to deal

with people who are slightlydifferent than me. Eventhough it might take alittle more effort, they canunderstand. It just takes theright way of teaching.

    Harvey echoed thesebenefits.

I think that my favoritepart of working with theISD students has been get-ting to know the kids, saidHarvey. I am gaining more

of an understanding for dif-ferent learning types, andgetting a feel for each kidspersonality is really a greatexperience. I love working

with the program and hopeI can continue to do so.

Helping these kidshelps me see things differ-

ently. They all seem liketheyre having a great time. Its really enlightening, added Trombley.

Yes, there are bridgesbeing built in the OnekamaSchool building, anyone

not convinced need onlythink about the last timethey heard a high schoolstudent describe her timein advanced algebra asenlightening.

Concluded Blevins, Itis truly an experience wehave all been changed by.

I think that my favorite part of working with the ISDstudents has been getting to know the kids. I amgaining more of an understanding for different learn-ing types, and getting a feel for each kids personalityis really a great experience. I love working with theprogram and hope I can continue to do so.

Some of the students who have helped gather the backpacks are (front row, leftto right) Heather Antal, Jaelyn Thomas, Jordyn Fortier, Garrett Sheaks, (middlerow) Jack Sandstedt, Billie Gajewski and Trac Allen. Behind the students areChris Codden, special education paraprofessional and Kenn Kott, principal.

MANISTEE The backpacks werestill coming in, but as school was wind-

ing down for the Christmas breaklast week students at Manistee AreaPublic Schools Kennedy Elementaryhad gathered at least 30 of them thathave been sent to Operation Back2 School, sponsored by the 1225thCombat Support Sustainment Battalionof Detroit, now deployed in Kandahar,

Afghanistan. The effort was organized by Chris

Codden, Kennedy special educationparaprofessional, whose wife Janeen is

with the 1225th Battalion.Kenn Kott (Kennedy principal)

liked the idea, so we contacted as manyteachers as we could and the staff has

really been on board with it, Coddensaid. The response has been great

weve received backpacks from all theschools. When it comes to doing proj-ects like this, MAPS comes together.

The battalions goal was to have650 backpacks filled with school sup-plies to distribute to local children in

Afghanistan. The backpacks were to benew or in like-new condition and filled

with writing tablets, pens, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, markers, crayons, coloring books and a ruler.

The students are having fun put-ting the packs together, Codden said.

Coddens wife Janeen left forAfghanistan in August and is expectedto come home in September.
