- GENE PINCUS -This organization has lost one of itsmost cherished Board members,Producers, Performers, Stage Crewand all-around helpers and he willcertainly be missed. Gene had justfinished "Guys & Dolls" as thelighting operator and had been amember of the WVLO Board since1973 (with a 7-year hiatus to workat Montalvo and TheaterWest). Hewas the voice of KBAY radio everymorning for almost 20 years andprior to that had served his countryin the Navy for 20 years. Hisrecorded voice has opened eachperformance of our productions formany years admonishing audiencesto turn off pagers, cell phones, etc.and prohibiting the use of recordersor flash photography. Gene'spresence will always be with usbecause of his dedication and loveof theater. Our deepest sympathy tohis wife, Cele, and their threechildren, and to all the casts andcrews who have worked for and withthis talented man in any capacity forthe past 30 years.

IN MEMORIAM- RICK FRANK-

This talented thespian appeared onour stage in several productions, butwas probably most remembered forhis ERMA-award winning role ofAlfred P. Doolittle in "My Fair Lady"and his portrayal of Emile de Becquein "South Pacific". He also appearedin several other productions as wellas directing "Brigadoon", "WonderfulTown" and "The Desert Song" forWVLO. Rick had directed for SantaClara Players, but during the last fouryears had focused on directingoriginal Irish plays for Quo VadisPlayers. His deep, resonant singingand speaking voice was a real assetwhen he chose to playa villain andwas just as intimidating when he wasdirecting. But Rick was a gentle, soft-hearted man who was generous withhis time, talents, praise, and moneyfor the theatrical world he loved. Wewill miss him and extend oursympathy to his wife, Gayle, and hisentire family.

A Note from Our Director ...

"42nd Street" has always been one of my favorite musicals-

maybe because I've always loved tapping, or maybe because I've always rooted

for the underdog (or in this case, understudy!) to be a success. This show has

a long and storied history, from the original 1933 movie starring Ruby Keeler,

to the latest revival, now playing on Broadway. Perhaps the musical is best

known among dancers and theater people alike as being Gower Champion's

last work-he died the day "42nd Street" opened on Broadway-August

25, 1980.

This musical is well known for its wonderful production

numbers, as it should be. I love the energy of "We're In The Money", the

comic beauty of "Shadow Waltz", the classiness of "Dames", and the intensity

of "42nd Street". This cast has worked long and hard to bring you all of

these numbers at their best.

But something I also love about this show is the way it tells

many stories. There is more going on both backstage and onstage of "Pretty

Lady" than meets the eye. You have Dorothy-towards the end of a storied

career-is she really happy? You have Peggy-just wanting to be on

Broadway-how many of us know someone like that-perhaps even

ourselves? You have Julian-trying to make a comeback after losing

everything. You have each member of the newly-cast "Pretty Lady "

ensemble-each of them has a story to tell. And what about Pat? Abner?

Maggie? Bert? Decide for yourself]

So sit back, let us entertain you, and I guarantee you'll leave

humming at least one of the many well-known tunes you'll hear tonight!

Enjoy!- Geri Carlson Sauls, Director/Choreographer

YOU mustnotify your employer of your donation, usually at the time you make it. If youare employed by one of these companiesand are one of our supporters, take ad-vantage of this wonderful way to supportone of your favorite non-profit associa-tions, WVLO. It isn't too late to matchyour contribution for this season.

Whenever you donate to a non-profitgroup likeWVLOA, you can double yourcontribution to the organization by tak-ing advantage of your company's match-ing gift program (even after retirement).Perhaps the most popular way for com-panies to make charitable contributionsis through a matching contribution pro-gram wherein the company will match, usually one-to-one, the donation one oftheir employees gives to a favorite char-ity. And often, these companies will onlymatch contributions made to develop arts
