Lunch orders are extremely important for Julie (our canteen manager) to prepare and place her orders so she does not waste fresh food. I would like to encourage all parents/ students to place orders before school to improve the canteen operations. Several schools have closed their canteens due to the lack of support and I hope we are not heading down the same path. Our canteen is very reasonably priced and we need your support. Mrs Hughes the outgoing P&C president has now returned to Perth. This means the committee are now required to advertise the president vacancy and fill this position before our next Term 4 meeting. The P&C has struggled to stay afloat in recent years and Mrs Hughes did a great job to reinvigorate activity and I hope this can be maintained. Congratulations to our aerobics teams who travelled to the Gold Coast to participate in the National Championships. Our younger team gained valuable experience and ran 8 th and our older girls were accredited with a bronze medal. What a fantastic effort for a school of 300 students competing against some schools who had four times as many students. Our girls U14’s and U16’s rugby league teams were also declared regional rugby league champions after beating some formidable opposition. They now travel to St Mary’s for the state finals in September. Our HSC students are well into their trial examinations and I look forward to some very good results. Although some students struggle with the pressure of examinations, I am sure students have been given the necessary guidance, support and preparation to do their best. We are extremely proud of our Year 12 students and they continue to demonstrate maturity and a strong sense of comradery. Whilst our Year 12 students are finishing up their last weeks of the HSC, our 2020 leadership team are beginning their nomination and elections for school captains. Good luck to all the students who nominate! SCHOOL LIBRARY The School Library will continue to be open during Term 3 on Wednesday afternoons from 3.30pm – 5.00pm for students to do their homework or assignments. Students can access library computers to help with their research. This offer is available to all students from Year 7 through to Year 12. The library will be supervised by various staff members. NATIONAL AEROBICS CHAMPIONSHIPS NATIONAL BRONZE! After a solid performance at Nationals on the Gold Coast, our teams have claimed 8 th place in the Stage 1 competition and 3 rd place in the stage 2 competition. The girls competed on Sunday 18 th August at the Gold Coast Convention Centre. They were surprised at the Opening Ceremony, receiving their State Gold Medals on Stage in front of all competing teams and spectators. positive start to the day our Stage 1 girls performed, demonstrating amazing finesse and confidence. This team included 4 girls who had never competed in an Aerobics competition, let alone Nationals. They finished 8th with an amazing score of 74.37, only 4 points away from 3rd place. This is an amazing achievement for these girls and they should be very proud of their effort. They all worked extremely hard this year under the guidance of their amazing coach, Miss Astley.

The Stage 2 team had to wait a little longer to perform but managed to keep calm and focused. They hit the stage with a positive attitude and a drive to get one of those medals. They blew us all away with their intensity and determination. They then waited patiently to hear their results, which were the last of the night. The CEO, Roxy, then announced that they had won a bronze medal with a score of 75.63, which is the first ever medal for West Wyalong High School at Nationals. There were lots of tears, from both the team, coaches and the supporters in the stands. It was such an exciting moment for our whole group and well deserved by the hard work and dedication of both the girls and their coach, Sherrie Clemson.

Congratulations to both teams on such a successful year and we look forward to what 2020 will bring!

MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE

On the 15th of August Year 11 students were provided with an excellent opportunity to attend a three day visit to Macquarie University in Sydney. A program run by Country Education Foundation in conjunction with Macquarie University LEAP program which gives students, in rural areas, a chance to experience and interact in university life. Our students travelled to Cootamundra High School, where we jumped on a coach to share the Sydney experience with CHS. Upon arrival students were taken to Dunmore Lang College where they were met by a panel of students who reside on campus. All the university students were from rural communities and many of them spoke about taking the brave leap from their town to the city. Students gained an insight into the living arrangements and facilities provided on campus. Students were able to ask questions and took a tour around the accommodation building, including dinner in the cafeteria. On day two, students were met by Macquarie Student Ambassadors Kate Bellamy and Megan Trethewy who guided us through the day’s activities. Kate and Megan discussed their own university experiences as well as the many pathways and opportunities/scholarships available to students. We then headed to the gymnasium area and participated in a game of Quidditch and had a talk from National Water Polo player Elysha O’Neill on sport and wellbeing. Students were introduced to economics in a hands on workshop with Dr Prashan, learning about the law of diminishing marginal productivity in shoe production. Tom Tough made an excellent worker in the ‘shoe factory’. In our Clinical Science workshop students were hooked up to heart and blood pressure machines. In two separate experiments, students were given activities designed to place stress on their bodies. One student had to count backwards by 7 while the other student had to grip an object with the same amount of force for 3 minutes. In both cases blood pressure and heart rate increased, especially when our student was incorrectly told they had the maths wrong! The next part of our journey took us through the library and the MAZE and MUSE study spaces, which houses the longest table in the southern hemisphere. A wide variety of opportunities exist for study at the university including quiet spaces for private study, conference rooms, collaborative and informal areas. In the Australian Hearing Hub students were taken into the Anechoic Chamber, an echo free room. A unique experience where sound will not travel across space effectively or reverberate off walls. This room is used as a research facility to help people with hearing and

speech difficulties. It was evident that many people within our West Wyalong community, including WWHS students, have benefited from the amazing partnership between Cochlear and Macquarie University to improve hearing and subsequent quality of life. Our final stop was the Law Society. Macquarie University students from rural and regional areas talked about their experiences and the variety of pathways available through studying a law degree. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea was catered by the Cult Eatery on campus and was delicious. Ellie Rutter from Macquarie University was an amazing coordinator. She made us feel welcome, escorted us to the various venues and ensured that we were well fed throughout the day. In the evening students enjoyed a session of Ice Skating at the Macquarie Centre. Day three we joined the masses on campus for the Macquarie University Open Day and the students had the opportunity to revisit their favourite places as well as attend particular lectures and workshops that interested them. A special mention to the Country Education Foundation team for their financial assistance and hard work of their staff in coordinating the logistics of the excursion, including Ashlea Pritchard who looked after us for the three days while in Sydney. We were so fortunate not to have to pay for any expenses related to this trip. Thanks also to the Cootamundra students and staff for being part of this great excursion. All students displayed exemplary behaviour including respect and responsibility and it was a pleasure to accompany them on this wonderful experience.

SCHOOLS CUP NETBALL – FINALS

On Thursday 8th August, Holly Whiley, Loudy Bishop, Maddie Cooper, Rory Burge, Charlee Jones, Tilly Wood, Abbey Whyte and Brianna Hanrahan travelled to Orange to play in the finals of the 7/8 girls division of the School Cups Netball.

The West Wyalong High girls took a little while to acclimatise to the cold weather and had a 13 all draw in their first game with Cowra High.

The second game was against Broken Hill High School and West Wyalong showed their skill and determination. Rory, Charlee and Tilly worked hard down the court and made accurate passes into the

shooters. Abbey and Brianna combined well in the goal circle to help the team win 15 to 6.

The third game was against Orange High School. Maddie, Holly and Loudy stood out in this game with a number of timely intercepts. The girls all worked hard and came away with the win 10 to 9.

This meant that West Wyalong had finished top of the pool and were up against Dubbo South College. This game started well and was locked at 4 all at half time. A small lapse of concentration unfortunately cost West Wyalong and we lost the game 7 to 10.

West Wyalong then had to play Parkes High School for the position of 3rd and 4th. The West Wyalong girls played their best game for the day. Everyone played controlled netball and read the play well to force a number of turnovers. It was a great team effort to win 17 to 2.

The girls displayed wonderful sportsmanship throughout the day and would like to thank Charlotte Whiley for withstanding the freezing conditions and umpiring each game.

West Wyalong High School would also like to thank the West Wyalong Girral AFL and Netball Club for their kind donation. The Club has donated their old netball uniforms to the school to use for the school netball teams.
