NEWS FOR YOU
IT’S WINTER TIME! Our annual reminder as the colder weather moves in that if there is no school in Westborough due to weather conditions, there are no activities at the Senior Center and no mini-bus or Volunteer transportation. If it’s not safe for the kids, it’s not safe enough for you either! There will be staff at the Senior Center if possible unless all Town Offices are closed. We’ll also be offering “Sand for Seniors” this year in con-junction with the DPW that will deliver a five gallon bucket of sand to your house. We will do this until we run out of buckets.
CONGRATULATIONS MARY ELLEN! We are pleased to announce that Mary Ellen Cibelli has accepted the job of Program and Volunteer Coordinator at the Senior Center. Mary Ellen has worked with us since 2015 as the Out-reach Aide and is familiar with many of you and your needs. She “hit the ground running” on November 15 and has already done a great job recruiting new Volunteers and getting things in order. She is currently sending out new applications and CORI forms to all exist-ing Volunteers to update her records. If you have not met Mary Ellen, please stop in and say hello!
FLOWERS WITH ANDREA One of our favorite things to do “before” was to make the beautiful flower arrange-ments with the very talented Andrea Lit-tle. We are so very excited to have her back on Tuesday, December 21, at 10:00 a.m. to help us create our very own holi-day arrangements. When your family asks who sent the flowers, you can smile and say, “I made them!” Cost for the class will be $30.00 and all reservations absolutely MUST be made and paid for by Wednes-day, December 15. Seating is limited. The past creations have been exquisite and add a real touch of glamor to your holiday festivities. Don’t miss out, stop in today and reserve your seat!
GRAB ‘N GO AND A TREAT Please come and join us on Wednes-day, December 15, for Grab ‘n Go lunch BUT!! You can also stay when you pick up your lunch to hear the lovely music from the 100th Town Chorus. The la-dies will be here for one of their first in-person performances since, well, you know! The sandwich for the day will be Turkey and cheese. Cost for lunch is $3.00. The performance will begin at 11:00 a.m. and lunch can be picked up then. Reservations by December 13, please.
DECEMBER BIRTHDAY LUNCH Please join us to celebrate the December birthdays on Wednesday, December 29, at noon. We’ll have pizza, salad, cake and ice cream and lots of good wishes! Please make your reservation by noon on Monday, December 27. If it’s your birth-day, it’s free. All others are $3.00. Trans-portation is available.

SMOC FUEL ASSISTANCE The SMOC Fuel Assistance program for the 2021/2022 heating season is now ac-cepting applications. If you are a single person with yearly income of $40,951 or less or a two person household with in-come of $53,551 or less, you may be eligi-ble for assistance. Please call the Senior Center and we will send you a packet of information outlining the documentation required to apply. Once you have gath-ered all of that documentation, call us back and we will schedule an in person meeting to complete the application pro-cess. The instructions are very clear. Please do not call for an appointment un-til you have all of your papers together. The process goes much quicker if the ap-plication is complete when it goes to SMOC.
NEWS FROM THE WSCS What a wonderful day it was!! Our annual Fall Fair is behind us and we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day! The weather was chilly but sunny, people were happy to be out and we had so very many lovely things to sell. When all was said and done, we have raised about $7,000 to help support the Senior Center. We will have a final tally and table breakdown at the WSCS Board Meeting on Thursday, December 9, at 1:00 p.m. at the Senior Center. All are welcome to attend.
We want to THANK all of the folks who baked, knitted, crocheted, cut up cheese, made baskets, sorted white elephant items, laid out jewelry, made Chinese dumplings, cooked lunch in the kitchen, donated to the Silent Auction, made signs, delivered posters, donated raffle tickets, “manned” a table, helped set up and clean up and all of the other jobs that made the day such a success. A special thanks to Linda Birch who took on the job of chairing the fair again this year. Job well done by all!
PASSES FOR SCHOOL EVENTS We have in our possession passes from the Westborough Public Schools that will admit you to all athletic events, mu-sical events and plays at Westborough High School for the 2021-2022 school year at no charge. You can pick up the pass at the Senior Center any time you are in the building. Our thanks to the High School for this opportunity to sup-port the activities of the students!
AMERICAN LEGION TO MEET Members of Westborough’s newly reor-ganized American Legion are invited to attend a meeting on Tuesday, December 7, at 10:00 a.m. at the Senior Center. This is an open meeting for anyone interested in joining this group. Transportation is available to the Senior Center by calling 508-366-3000.

JUST A REMINDER…..Please make your New Year’s resolution to stick with the res-ervation deadlines that we print in the Senior Scene!! Although our Caterer is amazing and happy to comply, it’s very hard for us to constantly ask him to add a couple more the day before. And when we serve a meal here, we order what we need so if you don’t even bother to make a reservation, that is very hard for us. Reservation dead-lines are always well posted in the announcement of the event. We really don’t want to disappoint anyone, but we set these deadlines for a reason and our New Year’s res-olution is to stick to them!

GIVE AWAY WHAT YOU DON’T NEED. PLAN FOR THE REST.
The holiday season is right around the corner. If you are trying to think of that perfect gift for the child, close relative, or friend who says they don’t need anything, here are a few thoughts: • GIVE SOMETHING YOU OWN. You know that special piece of jewelry, nostalgic painting, or vase that you inherited from your grandparents? Instead of waiting to distribute those after your death, give them away now. Give yourself the pleasure of hearing your loved ones say thank you and knowing that your precious items will be appreciated.
• GIVE MONEY, NO MATTER THE AMOUNT. Contrary to popular belief, there is nothing financially disadvantageous, either to you or to the recipi-ent, about giving away any amount of money. There is no Massachusetts gift tax. The federal gift tax only affects you if your total lifetime giving exceeds the federal estate tax threshold, which is currently over $11 mil-lion. (However, this exemption amount may be on the political chopping block and could soon be reduced, possibly to the $6 million range.) The receipt of a gift is not income, so your children will not pay any income tax on any of the money either. Unless your situation is very unusual (check with your accountant or tax attorney), you may give your children whatever you want this holiday season. The added benefit of doing this before you die is that it will probably decrease your taxable estate and, therefore, reduce any Massachusetts estate tax that might be owed.
• IN GENERAL, don’t give away stock, real estate, or other assets that have appreciated in value since you bought them. By saving these until you die, you will probably be saving the recipients more in capital gains tax than your estate will save in estate tax (the tax basis of these items will increase to the date of death value, thereby reducing or eliminating the capital gains tax they would otherwise pay upon sale). Once again, talk to your tax advisor or an attorney about this.
Finally, if you are thinking about making a gift to a church, school, or other charity, either now or in the future, this is a good time to either make that gift (and get an income tax deduction) or add them to your will or estate plan. Bequests to churches and other qualified non-profit organizations are subtracted from your taxable estate and, therefore, reduce your estate tax. Furthermore, if you give the charity tax-deferred funds at your death by naming it as the beneficiary, the charity will not pay income tax on the funds. So plan to make a gift that comes with, in effect, a matching dona-tion from the Mass. Department of Revenue or the IRS.If you want to learn more about this topic, check out my December seminar on Frank and Mary’s YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/elderlawfrankandmary, and on your local cable station, Westborough TV (Verizon 24, Charter 191), along with Frank and Mary in Westborough, where my co-host, Shelby Marshall and I address many common issues facing seniors and the resources available during the pandemic. As always, if you have any questions or would like additional information, please contact me at (508) 860-1470 or [email protected].
