Western Model A News C olin’s Corner

Well another year is almost to a close. The years seem to be going faster and faster as we get older. Someone said to me the other day that life is like a toilet roll, "The nearer you get to the end the faster it goes". That's a fairly accurate statement I guess.

Looking back at events over the year I can say we have enjoyed some great runs that have been well attended in particular the longer runs through the Wheat Belt area and the Great Southern. As more of our members are now in retirement mode I believe that such runs over four or five days are be-coming more popular and it also gives us a chance to meet country mem-bers who don't get a chance to make most of the club runs and events. To all those people who have worked in a most positive manner in the running of the club over the year I extend a big thank you! It hasn't been like a Tug-of-War where there is a lot of puffing and pulling in opposite directions with not much happening. Without singling out the obvious people I want to thank Edith Jeffree and Alan for the time and effort they gave in putting on another great Christmas dinner. It was very well attended and enjoyed by all. To top it off it was a lovely day with the weather just right.

There are others who contribute their time and effort such as Frank Farrelly who supplies and makes the Christmas cake each year and our Chief Editor who puts in a lot of time each month producing our newsletter. Thank you. On a somewhat sadder note we have lost some truly great club members in the past year, members who were well respected and part of the backbone of the club. I know it eventually catches up with us all one day. No one is exempt but it is sad never the less to lose such good men and women when it happens.

May each and every one of you have a great Christmas and may the New Year be one in which you are granted good health and enjoy life doing what you want. Take care while out on the roads, keep your eyes on the road ahead but let that not blind you to the Radar Van hidden in the bushes on the side of the road. With the State Government coffers empty I am sure the message has gone out to catch as many cars as possible. We keep being told it is for safety but I think most people know it is purely revenue raising! However, drive carefully as I want to see you all in 2017.

S ecretary Comments:

My thanks go to the 56 member families who have paid their 2017 renewal fees. This leaves 45 yet to pay. After 1 January 2017, if your membership has not been renewed, you will be unfinancial. Our Constitution gives a great deal of leeway in that it allows a further three months before unfinan-cial members are deemed to have resigned. The Department of Transport is not so lenient. It has been active in notify-ing car clubs through the Council of Motoring Clubs that unfinancial club members whose vehicles are licensed under Veteran, Vin-tage, Post Vintage and Invitation Class Vehi-cle License Concession (Code 404) are to be given no leeway before they are reported to the DoT through the CMC. Subsequently their Concession Licences will be cancelled. 25 of the member families who are yet to pay their 2017 renewal fees run vehicles on Code 404 licences. As secretary of an Incorporated Association I am bound to follow directions so please do not cause yourselves unnecessary hardship. Kathleen

C hristmas Lunch

This year’s Christmas lunch was very well attended by about 70 members, partners and guests.

Edith and Alan Jeffree once again arranged a wonderful event enjoyed by everyone present.

As we have come to expect, when we arrived the VCC Clubroom was attractively decorated, the ta-

bles set and welcoming and a party atmosphere soon developed.

We ate heartily. The food was plentiful and very tasty. Of course, to finish it off, where would the

Christmas Lunch be without Frank’s Christmas Cake?

He baked one large enough to feed an army and

tempted those already replete to further indulge

themselves on over-large slices.

Thankyou to everyone who assisted in the arrange-

ments and to those who attended.

N ovember Run Report

Several cars were assembled at Centenary Park starting point when Ana and I arrived at 0850. This was the last run for the year and good weather was forecast. There were eighteen Model A’s and several moderns when we departed at 0930. The first section was along Great Eastern Hwy to Guild-ford, then through Hazelmere, Helena Valley and on to Gooseberry Hill. We had a leisurely run through the hills to Stirk Park in Kalamunda where we were joined by Ian Steed. After a “cuppa’ and a snack we headed off along Mund-aring Weir Road taking in some lovely scenery and a few wild flowers through the Carmel /Bickley valley. The hills were still green after a long winter and recent late spring rains. The run took us on some back roads away from traffic with a few hills to try gear changing skills and the patience of the drivers. We made our way down Welshpool Road to the home of Reg and Carol Blewett in Victoria Park. Tables and chairs were soon set up in the back yard and everyone enjoyed lunch and a chat before the meeting. Reg started up an original unrestored Model A truck which showed just how many heads can fit under one bonnet at a time. The meeting was held under the patio in the shade after which the raffle was drawn. I would like to thank Reg and Carol for organising some of the raffle prizes and opening up their home and sheds for us. Spe-cial thanks also to the family members who kept an eye on the cars parked in the public car park over the road, much appreci-ated. It was an excellent day for the run with a fantastic turn out of cars and members. Thank you to all who could make it on the day. Ron Andrews.
