The Weston Youth Orchestra

Weston Youth Orchestra was formed in 1958. Its aim was, and still is, to provide a social atmosphere in which young musicians can develop their skills within an orchestra. Requirements to Join There are two orchestras due to varying age, ability and experience. The Junior Orchestra (grades 1 - 4) has an approximate age range of 8 - 14 years and the Senior Orchestra (grade 5+) has an age range of 12 - 21 years. There is a degree of overlapping with some members playing in both orchestras. The orchestras average about 65 members and those members with a high standard of performance are encouraged to perform as soloists at concerts. Repertoire & Concerts Over the past 50 years an impressive library of music has been built up. Repertoire ranges from Classical to Popular and Contemporary. The orchestra strives to achieve the highest possible standard at concerts. Venues include the Boulevard United Reformed Church, the Playhouse, the Blakehay and suitable venues further afield. Programme Notes – First Half

Alexander Borodin – Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor The Polovtsian Dances are perhaps the best known selections from Alexander Borodin’s opera Prince Igor which premiered in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1890. The opera was actually left unfinished upon Borodin’s death in 1887 and was subsequently completed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov. Most of the themes were incorporated into the 1953 musical ‘Kismet’ by Robert Wright and George Forrest. It is best known for the women's dance ‘Gliding Dance of the Maidens’, which was adapted for the song ‘Stranger in Paradise’. Other themes from Prince Igor have been used by such artistes as Artie Shaw (the popular Big Band leader of the 1930’s and 1940’s), Paul Whiteman (whose orchestra gave the first performance of George Gershwin’s ‘’Rhapsody In Blue’ in 1924) and more recently by hip-hop producer Warren G and the Bristol based group Massive Attack.

Gabriel Fauré – Pavane The original score of Fauré’s Pavane was written for Piano and Chorus in the late 1880’s and first performed three days after the orchestral version in November 1888. Fauré described his Pavane as “elegant, but not otherwise important” and intended the piece to be played more briskly than it has come to be performed in the more popular orchestral form and from the outset has enjoyed immense popularity with audiences whether with or without chorus. In more recent times it has been used for many TV and film soundtracks and during the 1998 football World Cup, held in France, the Wimbledon Choral Society’s recording reached No. 20 in the UK Singles Chart for one week.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Bassoon Concerto in Bb Major Soloist: Mollie Brown Mozart wrote the Bassoon Concerto in 1774 when he was just 18 years old and is believed to have been his first concerto for a wind instrument. It is alleged to have been commissioned by an aristocratic amateur Bassoonist, Thaddäus Freiherr von Dürnitz, who owned seventy-four of Mozart’s works, although this is supported by little evidence. It is thought that Mozart possibly wrote a total of three concertos for Bassoon but this is the only one that has survived.

German dams that was carried out during World War II. Coates’ son alleged in an interview that the march had not actually been written for the film, but had in fact been written a few days before Coates was contacted by the film’s producers. Coates had apparently been carrying out an exercise in composing a march in Elgarian form, along the lines of the ‘Pomp and Circumstance’ marches. He initially refused the commission but on hearing more about the film came to the conclusion that the piece he had just completed might just be the very thing.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – Suite from the Nutcracker Tchaikovsky was commissioned to compose ‘The Nutcracker’ following the success of ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ in 1890. He joined forces with the choreographer Marius Pepita who gave Tchaikovsky specific instructions for each movement right down to the tempo and number of bars. Tchaikovsky took a selection of eight numbers from the ballet before the premiere in December 1892 to form ‘The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a’, intended for concert performance. The suite was first performed in March 1892, with almost every movement encored at the premiere. The suite became very popular on the concert stage and was featured in Disney’s ‘Fantasia’. George Frideric Handel – Allegro from Sonata in F Soloist: Jack Hanlon Jack is 15 and attends the Kings of Wessex Academy in Cheddar. He is preparing for his grade eight exam with his teacher Dennis Cole. He also plays the trumpet and enjoys playing football for the Axbridge Under-16s. Elmer Bernstein – The Magnificent Seven Elmer Bernstein (no relation of the composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein) was an American composer and conductor best known for his many film scores. His career spanned some fifty years writing theme songs or incidental music for over 200 films and TV shows, including ‘The Magnificent Seven’ and ‘The Great Escape’ to name but two. Bernstein was nominated for 14 Oscars and won an Oscar for his score to ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’. He also won two Golden Globes and was nominated for two Grammy Awards.

Programme Notes – Second Half

Antonín Dvořák – Waltz in F Op. 54 Antonin Leopold Dvořák, born 1841, was a Czech composer who frequently employed features of the folk music from Moravia and his native Bohemia. Dvořák displayed his gift for music at an early age and his first surviving work, ‘Forget-Me-Not, Polka in C’, was possibly written as early as 1854. After graduating in 1859 he spent the 1860’s playing as a Violinist in the Bohemian Provisional Theatre Orchestra. In 1892 Dvořák moved to the United States and became the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America where he wrote his symphony ‘From the New World’. Although after a salary dispute and an onset of homesickness Dvořák returned to his native Bohemia in 1895. He continued composing until his death in 1904 leaving several unfinished works.

Henry Purcell – Trumpet Tune and Air Henry Purcell was born in Westminster in 1659. While incorporating Italian and French characteristics into his compositions Purcell’s legacy was a uniquely English form of Baroque music. This legacy led to Purcell being considered as one of the greatest English composers of all time, a feat no other native-born English composer achieved until Edward Elgar. Purcell wrote much sacred music as well as Operas, music for theatre and, most significantly, the music for the funeral of Queen Mary which was also played at his own funeral in 1695. Purcell’s music continues to inspire artistes today including the British rock band ‘The Who’ and the composer Michael Nyman, who has based some of his works using ostinati by Purcell. Purcell’s music has been featured in numerous films including Stanley Kubrick’s ‘A Clockwork Orange’.

Johann Sebastian Bach – Prelude from Suite No.1 in C Major Soloist – Hamish Clarke Hamish is 12 years old and attends Hugh Sexey’s Middle School. He has been playing the cello for four years, and learns with Jo Lewis. He passed his grade five earlier in the year with a high merit. He also plays the piano and is currently working towards his grade five. He is an active member of the Winscombe Rugby Club and also runs for the Mendip Secondary Schools Cross-Country League. Eric Coates – Dam Busters March The Dam Busters March was written as the theme for the 1955 film ‘The Dam Busters’ which told the story of Operation Chastise, an attack on

Mollie Brown, this evening’s soloist, is a music scholar at Wells Cathedral School studying Bassoon under Pete Harrison, a former member of Weston Youth Orchestra who, amongst other things, conducts the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra on a regular basis. Jacques Offenbach – Overture from Orpheus in the Underworld Orphée aux enfers (Orpheus in the Underworld) is an opéra bouffon, a form of operetta, written by Jacques Offenbach. The work, first performed in 1858, is said to be the first classical full-length operetta and also marked the first time that Offenbach used Greek mythology as a backdrop for one of his ‘buffooneries’. The operetta is an irreverent parody and scathing satire on Gluck’s and Offenbach’s ‘Orfeo ed Euridice’ and culminates in the risqué infernal Galop, more commonly known now as the ‘Can-Can’, that shocked some of the audience at the premiere. Ironically Saint-Saëns ‘borrowed’ the Galop, slowed it to a crawl, and arranged it for Strings to represent the Tortoise in his ‘The Carnival of the Animals’.
