This has been a long, hot and dry summer. These extreme conditions have made it difficult for anything outside trying to survive. Lawns, plants and trees are struggling to stay alive. Many of our great cypress trees along Lakeline Boulevard are suffering due to these conditions, which makes them even more susceptible to disease caused by insects. The HOA board had an arborist come out and evaluate all the trees and give recommendations as to how to keep them healthy. We are taking steps to help them out.

Many of the trees in our neighborhood that are native and also that have been planted with the building of new homes are oak trees. While these trees are typically strong and nice to look at, we know that they are also susceptible to oak wilt. Oak wilt can spread from tree to tree through the root system and wipe out entire areas full of these trees. When you add our current weather conditions to this you can start to see how many of these oak trees can be lost. There are oak trees in our preserves and in the back yards of some of our neighbors that have slowly died over the past couple of years. It could be a mix of oak wilt and the weather. It’s hard to know for sure. However, professional arborists that have come and tried to treat some of these trees have pointed out that the only way to really battle oak wilt is to plant more trees that are not susceptible to oak wilt. Be proactive and call a tree specialist and find out what kinds of trees would work best, and then plant a couple as soon as the weather gets a little better.

One HOA BOArd POsitiOn AvAilABleAS RANDY WOODS DECIDES NOT TO RUN AGAIN

One board position is up for election this year. Randy Woods currently holds that position. Randy also runs our HOA website, and has decided to concentrate on that and give someone else the opportunity to be on the HOA board. We need another board member to fill the spot, so now is the time to run. As a member of the HOA board, you will have the opportunity to meet with the other board members once a month to discuss the matters of the HOA. The election takes place at the annual meeting which will be on October 10 if we have over 500 homeowners at the meeting either in person or by proxy, or November 7 if there were not enough attending the October meeting. Any homeowner in good standing with the HOA can run for a board position. If you would like to run for this board position, you must submit your info (a short write up about yourself and why you want to be on the board) to Kathy at Goodwin Management ([email protected]) and to the Westside News Editor ([email protected]) no later than September 9 so that it can be included in the October newsletter. If you submit it sooner we can also have it on the website. At the annual meeting the candidates will have a few minutes to present themselves before voting.

WESTSIDE AT BUTTERCUP CREEK

Each month a section of this Article will be reviewed to help homeowners be better informed. The complete set of Bylaws and CCR’s were given to you when you closed on your house, but can also be found at the HOA website which is www.westsidehoa.org.

SECTION 14. Electrical, Telephone and Other Utility Lines. Except as may be permitted in writing by the New Construction Committee or as permitted by a Supplemental Declaration for a particular Neighborhood, all electrical, telephone and other utility lines and facilities which (i) are located on a Lot, (ii) are not within or part of any building, and (iii) are not owned by a governmental entity, a public utility company, or the Association, shall be installed in underground conduits or other underground facilities. Landscaping and security lighting fixtures may be installed above ground only after the design and installation thereof has been approved in writing by the New Construction Committee or Modification Committee.

COMMENT: You shouldn’t have a bunch of wires running across your yard, or wrapped around your house. Keep things looking neat and in order. Use underground conduit or go straight into the house to avoid tacking lines to the brick and mortar.

Dental Tipsfrom the Dark Corner

of the MouthDid you know that oral health is tied to heart health? It’s true.

Studies now show that unwanted bacteria found in dirty mouths is also being found in the heart. Think about it. Your mouth is the biggest opening into the rest of your body. It makes sense that the cleaner you keep your mouth, the healthier you whole body will be. It is recommended that you brush your teeth for 2 minutes, twice daily. Most people don’t time themselves and think they are close to 2 minutes, but find that when they do time themselves they are nearer to 30 seconds to 1 minute. Newer, power toothbrushes often have some sort of timer built into them. If you’re the type that shuns technology and brush with a regular old brush, just get a little 2 minute hourglass timer from your dentist. Most offices have them. Oh, and don’t forget to floss once daily. Some say this might be even more important than brushing.

• The baby pool at Lakeline Pool is for babies and caregivers and not intended for school age children.

• A lifeguard or board member may order a swimmer to take a time out for an infraction of the rules.

• If the infraction of the pool rules is serious, a lifeguard or board member may order a person to leave the pool enclosure.

• If a lifeguard or board member’s order to leave the pool enclosure is disobeyed, lifeguards and board members have instructions to call the Cedar Park Police. If police are required to remove an offender, an official complaint will be signed.

NOTICE• After extended rain, lifeguards may not be present for the entire

standard lifeguard hours. • The lock and security system has the capacity to perform audit

Is Your Baby Sleeping Safely?by Robin Dwyer RN

I have lived in the Canyon Creek subdivision in Austin since 1994. When I moved in the neighborhood, I had a five year old daughter and had another daughter soon after. The neighborhood at that time was fairly new with a lot of young families with small children. I was seemingly unaware of the dangers of sleeping with my children in an adult bed or the dangers of my child sleeping in a crib with beautiful bedding, stuffed animals, plush blankets and toys that we all purchase when our children are born. I wanted to write this article for the residents to help and educate in hopes of preventing tragedies that I have investigated over the last seven years as my job as an Investigator for the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office. I want mothers and fathers as well as siblings, grandparents and babysitters to be aware of the dangers of unsafe sleep environments with babies and young children. One of the most pleasurable experiences is cuddling and bonding with an infant. This article is in no way discouraging breast feeding, bonding or cuddling with your child. Babies should be placed alone on their back in a safety approved crib or bassinet for sleeping. This is the safest way for a baby to sleep to prevent accidental deaths by suffocation. Many times babies are placed in adult beds with thick comforters, pillow top bedding and many pillows. It is also not advisable to prop an infant on a couch with pillows. The

infants can fall into crevices of the couch and also spaces between a headboard/sideboard.

Below are facts and figures depicting the harsh realty of what is happening in Texas and in Travis County and recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics to eliminate the risk factors and create a safe place for your baby to sleep.

Every year babies die from suffocation while they sleep. In Texas, on average, a baby dies every other day while bed-sharing with an adult or another child. These figures, researched by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, are alarming and the trend is increasing. According to the Texas State Child Fatality Review Team’s 2009 Annual Report, 86% of accidental infant suffocation deaths were sleep-related, with 81% of these deaths occurring in an adult bed. Right here in Travis County, between 2008 and 2010, 43 babies suffocated in an unsafe sleep environment -- 74% died in an adult bed with 63% dying while bed-sharing. Last year 17 babies, the size of a kindergarten classroom, died of suffocation in an unsafe sleep environment.

Bed-sharing is a controversial topic and some groups promote the practice for the purposes of bonding, and more frequent and extended breast feeding. Research completed by the American Academy of

Pediatrics Sudden Infant Death Task Force leads to their position that “there is growing evidence that bed-sharing, as practiced in the United States and other Western countries, is more hazardous than the infant sleeping on a separate sleep surface and, therefore, recommends that infants not bed-share during sleep. Infants may be brought into bed for nursing or comforting but should be returned to their own crib or bassinet when the parent is ready to return to sleep. The infant should not be brought into bed when the parent is excessively tired or using medications or substances that could impair his or her alertness.”A FEW AMERICAN ACADEMY OF

PEDIATRICS RECOMMENDATIONS: • Babies should sleep in a separate safety

approved crib or bassinette in the same room as the parent or caregiver. Bed-sharing is not recommended.

• Infants be placed on their back for every sleep (for naps and at night)

Is Your Baby... - (Continued from Page 6) • Use a firm crib mattress made for the crib (there should not be greater than 2 fingers width or 1 inch between the mattress and the crib railing). If the baby leaves an indentation, then the mattress is not firm enough.

• The mattress should be covered by a fitted sheet leaving no wrinkles.

• Soft objects and loose bedding, such as pillows, quilts, stuffed toys, pillow-like bumper pads, sheep skins and blankets be kept out of the crib.

• Continue the “Back to Sleep” campaign. Parents should tell others who care for their baby of these risk factors and how they want their baby to be placed to sleep.This information is extremely important

and everyone who takes care of a baby should know the difference between a safe and unsafe sleep environment and what to do to make it safe for a baby to sleep. Keeping babies safe during sleep is as easy as your ABC’s. Your baby should sleep….. A - Alone, on his or her B - Back, in a safety approved C

- Crib (or bassinette), with the D - Dangers (soft bedding materials, stuffed toys, pillow, blankets, comforters, sheepskins, bumper pads, cords) E – Eliminated.

A good night’s sleep is a safe night’s sleep!
