Bees co-league champs (again)by Warren Kozireski

Byron-Bergen had little trouble in sweeping Oakfield-Alabama 25-12, 25-11, 25-13 as nine seniors celebrated their final regular season home match by clinching another league title - co-champions with Batavia Notre Dame.

Sophomore setter and 2014 Section V All-Tournament team selection Lauren Burke registered five aces over a seven point stretch in the first game to push the Bees to the win after the Hornets had closed the game to 16-12. Senior and leading hitter Byranna D’Agostino ended it with a thundering kill.

Game two featured D’Agostino picking two kills and two aces while Kitana Maher and Joelle Meister also had aces. Bethany Ezard and Cora Ivivson added kills in the win.

Senior Anna Levchuk had a kill and an ace and class-mate Alexa Strzelecki added a kill in the game three win.

Burke led all players with twelve assists, ten aces and added three digs; D’Agostino led with nine kills and chipped in three aces while Ivivson finished with four kills.

In addition to D’Agostino, Strelecki, Meister, Levchuk, Ivivson and Ezard, Kait-lyn Harder, Leah Catalino and Jillaina Olander are also completing their senior cam-paigns.

The Bees completed the league schedule with a 12-1 record and improved to 13-1 overall with their only loss to Notre Dame. They entered their final two games - both non-league - as the top seed for the Section V playoffs in pursuit of their fourth state title in school history.

Kendall girls soccer ranked top-ten in Class Cby Warren Kozireski

Kendall finished off a perfect girls soccer regular season with a lightning-shortened 4-0 win at Byron-Bergen to fin-ish 16-0 and enter the Section V playoffs as the top seed in their division. They were also ranked ninth in Class C by the New York State Sportswriters Association as of October 13, but one of only two unbeaten teams among the top ten in the Class.

The first 19 minutes of the first half were relatively evenly played before the Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 19:49 as Taylor ReQua passed to Maya Rutland, whose attempt deflected off a defender and changed direction before crossing the goal-line.

In the 33rd minute, the same two Eagles teamed up again as ReQua found Rutland on the left side of the scoring area. Her blast from 20 yards out found the upper right corner for a 2-0 lead.

Byron-Bergen’s best scoring opportunity came in the 37th minute as Morgan Fuller fed a pass to Kelsey Fuller, but her point-blank shot was saved by Kendall goalkeeper Jenna Jacob.

With a storm looming after halftime, Kendall added to their lead just 1:29 into the second half when Taylor Rut-land converted a pass from Coralee Freitag.

Maya Rutland then completed her third hat trick of the

season at 43:03 when she put her shot in off the left goal post after a pass from Freitag.

The game was delayed and ultimately suspended 5:55 into the second half due to lightning.

Rutland’s other two hat tricks came on September 29 at Notre Dame and October 5 - her birthday - against Attica.

Philmon sets Hilton school recordby Warren Kozireski

In his final regular season game, senior running back Dillon Philmon broke the school record for yards rushing in one game with 349 and five touchdowns to lead the Ca-dets to a 34-24 victory over Rush-Henrietta. Hilton locked up the fourth seed in the Section V Class AA playoffs with the win.

“It’s obviously great to set a record, but it was never a goal of ours,” Philmon said on the sideline. “The goal was to win the game. All year you don’t see big names in the paper, it’s just Hilton every year and every week. We’re 6-1 and going into sectionals we feel good.

“The whole (offensive) line is incredible. They’re not the biggest kids, but they are super-athletic and tougher than anybody in the section. They work so hard and they make me look so good.”

That line is senior center Michael Murphy, senior guard Devyn Nieskens, sophomore guard Nathan Whybra and senior tackles Justin Clayton and Cole Comden.

Philmon had touchdown runs of 11, 60, 53, 48 and 46 yards. Most of those runs started off-tackle before he took it wide to escape would-be tacklers.

Senior Justin Resseguie broke up a pass attempt on fourth down to end the first Royal Comets drive. Their second drive ended with a fumble recovery on third down by Nick Millgate.

Hilton converted on the ensuing drive highlighted by a 33-yard scamper by Philmon on third down two plays prior to his first touchdown run.

R-H returned the kickoff for a touchdown to tie the game 6-6, but the Cadets returned with a four play scoring drive on Philmon’s 60 yard run off right tackle on the first play of the second quarter.

Resseguie intercepted a ball in the end zone on the next Royal Comets possession which led to a five-play, 80 yard scoring drive for the Cadets capped by a cut-back 53 yard Philmon TD run. Resseguie took the two-point conversion around the right end to give Hilton a 20-6 advantage at halftime.

In the third quarter, Philmon again ran off right tackle to 48 yards and, with Christian Ranke’s extra point, a 27-6 lead.

R-H put together a 72 yard drive to cut lead to 27-12 at the start of the fourth quarter, but Hilton responded with their own drive. Junior quarterback Johnathan Letta scampered for a 27 yard run on second down before Philmon surpassed the 300-yard rushing mark with a 46-yard touchdown run and his fifth of the night.

The Royal Comets scored on their next two possessions to make it seem close, but their onside kick attempt in the closing seconds was recovered by senior David Guest to end the threat.

Philmon finished with 349 rushing on 27 carries while Letta gained 54 yards on 15 plays. Donald Neuffer led

the Cadets with nine tackles on defense while Millgate added eight.

The previous rushing record was held by Justin Knorr, who gained 311 yards rushing in one game in 2008. Philmon rushed for 308 yards two years ago in the Sec-tion V playoffs against Webster-Schroeder.

“We’ve been playing good football all year and we had to play fantastic tonight to beat Rush,” head coach Rich Lipani said. “We’ve had a lot of guys contribute this year and our offensive line was fantastic and Dillon ran as good as I’ve seen him run---ever.”

Prior to the game, a moment of silence was held in mem-ory of eleven-year old Andrew Rohloff of nearby North-wood Elementary. The team also wore decals with “AR” in white letters during the game. Nic Rohloff, Andrew’s older brother, is in his sophomore year at Hilton.

sports/recreation

Kendall only allowed two goals all season and none since September 24. They enter the postseason on a seven game-plus shutout streak.

Byron-Bergen finished second in the division with a 9-6-1 record and seeded eight in Class C1. Kendall was seeded first in Class C2 and awaited the first round winner of #8 Campbell-Savona versus #9 Red Jacket.
