WeyCOAs an employer, you know that offering short-term disability insurance is an important benefit that your associates have come to expect.

And you know it’s a smart investment, as nearly 60 percent of injuries happen off the job—which means they are not covered by workers’ compensation—and your employees may not have enough saved to make it even through a short period without a paycheck.

Short-term disability coverage gives your staff peace of mind, knowing that they’ll have a steady stream of income to cover day-to-day necessities—food, utilities, car payments, rent or mortgage, and other family expenses. It’s good for your associates, and good for your company, too.

But once you’ve decided to offer short-term disability manage-ment coverage for your employees, where can you turn to find the best provider and help navigate the complexities of claims? There’s no better source than Weyco, Inc.

With extensive experience in customizing short-term disability management coverage for both small and large companies, we can develop the best price and policy terms to meet your needs.

In addition to helping you find the best policy, Weyco offers a variety of ways to assist with administration of your short-term disability management coverage. Not every option fits every company, so we offer customized services tailored just for your situation.

Short-term Disability ManagementWhile providing short-term disability coverage is important, it’s just as important to work with a company that helps you manage those claims. At Weyco, it’s our job to make claim management as simple as possible. By allowing us to administer your short-term disability management program, you put a team of professionals on your side. Option 2: Case ManagementYour goal—and ours—is to quickly get healthy employees back to work. With Weyco’s Case Management option for short-term disability management, you not only have our experienced team determining employee eligibility and managing impartial medical exams, but a physician evaluation of every claim, as well. We’re one of just a few third-party administrators who use in-house physicians for such evaluations.

Our physician consultant begins work on the short-term disability claim as soon as it is received, ensuring quick review and claims processing. Our approach is to bring the employee in at the beginning of the claim to assist in developing realistic expectations about the length of disability and a timely return to work.

Because accidents happen, it isn’t always possible to talk with an employee prior to a short-term disability claim. But when circumstances allow it—such as with pregnancies or surgeries—our staff wants to discuss the scheduled short-term absence with the employee, and help establish realistic expectations for return to work within national standards. Employee compliance is an integral part of our process.

Using recognized clinical benchmarks, our physician consultant reviews claims for medical appropriateness and suitable length of disability. The consultant plays a key role in managing impartial medical exams and working with your employees and their physicians, as well as providing feedback to the HR staff. This helps lower absenteeism where possible, along with decreasing costs of disability and staffing. In some instances, the physician can expedite doctor appointments so that employees can return to work sooner. Weyco also provides a savings report to help you evaluate the direct savings to your company from this option.

You may also experience an increase in morale among employees with short-term disabilities. When each employee receives a treatment plan at the beginning of the disability management program, there are no guessing games or miscommunications between the company and the physician. All employees will be aware that disabilities will be managed, and therefore assured that excessive time off will not occur and staffing challenges can be kept to a minimum.

The ultimate plus from Weyco’s Case Management option is a decrease in employee time off. Due to the proactive nature of this program, employees return to work faster, saving short-term disability funds and potentially lessening the incidence of long-term disability.

Option 1: Human Resources SupportMany small companies—including those that do not self-administer their insurance program, and those with few short-term disability claims—simply need help processing claims and answering technical questions. In this option, Weyco assists by receiving the claims from Human Resources, ensuring that the claims meet eligibility guidelines, and advising the Payroll department of the disability benefits available to the employee. Your HR department takes care of the other necessary steps, including claims payments.

Option 3: Individual Complex Case ConsultationWeyco offers the expertise of its physician consultants, who have the knowledge and skills necessary to handle complex cases. This option is offered in addition to Option 1 or Option 2 services on an hourly basis, for cases that require extensive physician time and involvement. Our physician consultants will contact you, or you may contact them to start this process.

Getting the Most from Short-term Disability Management: Short-term Disability Management is an important part of your employee benefit package, and Weyco can help you get the most from your coverage. Our consultants stand ready to analyze your company’s needs and develop solutions uniquely tailored to your business.

“Weyco has a fantastic Shor t-term Disability Management Program. We’ve used it for almost 10 years now. The best par t of working with them is the physician who checks over all the claims. Weyco’s analysts and physicians examine everything thoroughly, and can talk right to the employees’ doctors using the appropriate medical language. Weyco does an outstanding job.”
