In October, 2017, the Community Health Van started to deliver Harm Reduction supplies, overdose prevention training, naloxone kits, vaccinations, nursing care, Hepatitis C and HIV blood testing and support, access to winter gear, hygiene kits and basic food supplies to residents in Downtown Guelph. Guests to the van can also receive referrals to other agencies and health care providers as needed. The van is funded by a 2-year Ontario Trillium Foundation grant which features a unique partnership between Sanguen Health Centre, ARCH Guelph and Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health. The van’s services are designed to meet the needs of individuals who experience barriers in accessing traditional models of healthcare as a result of substance use, mental illness, chronic homelessness and poverty. The van’s services will be expanded to other areas of Guelph and the County of Wellington over the next year. This awesome achievement means that residents of Guelph and Wellington County who require Mobile Harm Reduction Services, Withdrawal Management Services and/or walk-in Addiction Medicine Services can now access these services locally. Please read below for more details. Community Health Van Since March 2017, CWSS has offered non-residential withdrawal management services to residents of Guelph-Wellington looking to withdraw from alcohol and/or other substances in a safe and supportive community environment. CWSS is available to those 18 years of age and older. The service is available throughout the Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network (WW-LHIN) and administered by Stonehenge Therapeutic Community. Following an in-person assessment, phone support to cope with both acute and post- acute withdrawal is provided, along with referrals to other services as needed. Local services, including primary and acute care providers, are encouraged to consult with CWSS regarding the needs of their patients/clients. CWSS clients receive practical resources designed in consultation with those with lived experience, including: a Withdrawal Comfort Kit, Withdrawal Flashcards and The Plan. The Plan is a guide for clients and family members regarding what to expect throughout the withdrawal process. Community Withdrawal Support Services (CWSS)
