Scholastic Report Finds Reading Aloud to Children Has Lasting Impact
Recent findings from Scholastic’s “Kids and Family Reading Report “ show that reading aloud to children through elementary school has
lasting benefits. According to the report, 41 percent of frequent readers ages 6-10 were read aloud to at home, while only 13 percent of
infrequent readers were being read to. Other results showed that:
For children ages 6-11, additional factors that predict reading frequency involve reading aloud specific characteristics kids want in
books and spending less time online using a computer.
Nine in 10 parents (91 percent) say their children are read books aloud at home before age 6, primarily to develop vocabulary and
language skills and to foster reading enjoyment.
Nearly one in four parents of children ages 6-17 (23 percent) stopped reading aloud to their children before age 9, most often
citing reasons related to their child reading independently.
Six in 10 parents with children ages 0-5 (60 percent) received advice that children should be read aloud to from birth; however, just
under half of parents in the lowest-income households (47 percent) received this advice vs 74 percent in the highest income house-
holds.
Please take a moment to review the Reading Tips on pages 3-6.
Have a great April,

Odyssey of the Mind News
It was another exciting year for Southlake Carroll’s Odyssey of the Mind Teams! This year’s tourna-ment hosted 68 teams from across North Texas, one of five regions holding tournaments. The top 4 teams in each problem and division advance to the State Tournament, held in Houston on April 11th. A record 19 teams will be advancing from CISD! Nine of our advancing teams earned First Place in their Problem/Division. We are proud of the hard work and creativity displayed by all 23 SC teams, these kids (and their coaches) worked hard on their solutions and it showed. We are so thankful for the support we get from our school district. Congratulations to all the participants, especially our WGES students!
