At Fretheim Hotel you will live like royalties, and you can enjoy your meals in a fantastic environment. During the summer we have a delicious buffet in the restaurant. You can also have a la carte menu with local and organic food the whole year around. In the summer we also have the coffee and wine bar open. In addition to homebrewed coffee and different types of wine, we have exiting small dishes and homemade cakes.

In the storehouse which was made in 1928 you can have an overnight stay with a historic atmosphere. You can also have a traditional cured meat meal while you have the view of cured ham hanging down from the roof!

Green experiences are something we recommend. In Flåm we have many types of experiences to offer. The Nærøyfjord is a short boat ride from the harbor in Flåm. The Nærøyfjord is on the UNESCO world heritage list. The Natives Road where you can have a bike experi-ence from high mountain down to the fjord. The Aurland valley which is a popular hiking route. Kayaking and salmon fishing is also other great experience where you have the opportunity to come close to the beautiful nature.

We have a lot to show you, welcome to Flåm!

CampingandcampervanholidaysThe Aurland, Lærdal and Årdal area is ideal for camping and camper van holidays. Several of the campsites have made special arrangements for camper vans and offer, among other things, parking spaces with electricity, good sanitary facilities and facilities for emptying toilets. Overnight parking in camper vans and caravans outside organised sites is becoming an environmental problem. Therefore, we call on all cam-ping tourists to stay overnight at organised campsites. Hiking – AurlAndThe well-known and historic Aurlandsdalen valley was once one of the main routes be-tween the eastern and west-ern parts of Norway. The area, known as Norway’s Grand Canyon, is wild and breathtak-ing, rich in plant and animal life, cultural treasures, history and geological features. A trip through the Aulandsdalen val-ley is something you’ll never forget! You can hike through the valley and stay in tourist cabins along the way, or come by bus or car for shorter trips.

1. Finse – Geiterygghytta, 5 hours Marked trail. Beautiful views. A quick detour to Sankt Pål is highly recommended.

2. Geiterygghytta – Steinbergdalen, 3 hours Breathtaking views of high peaks, glaciers, mountain-lakes

and rivers. Spectacular view of the Stemberdalen valley.

3. Steinbergdalen – Østerbø, 4 hours At this stage of the journey, you can enjoy the fine view of

Aurdalen, a lasting memory of a spectacular landscape.

4. Østerbø–vassbygdi, 6 hours The trail is well known. Visit the old cemetery. A quick detour

to the«Vetlahelvete» cave is highly recommended. You may also like to visit the Sinjarheim farm, inhabited until 1921 and now restored. NB! Remember to bring a map of Aurlands-dalen.

StondalenStondalen is one of the side valleys of Aurlandsdalen valley, and the ideal alternative for anyone looking for a shorter and less de-manding hike. Start your walk in Stondalen (20 km from Aurland in the direction of Hol) and proceed to Vassbygdi. Time: 1,5–2 hours.

mountain peak prestThe path begins some 10 km from the centre of Aurland on the road to Lærdal. Steep path from parking lot to Prestevarden (1.363 metres above sea level) – panoramic view – round trip 2.5 hours. If you want to take a little hike: Easy walk for about 15 min with a fantastic view over the fjord.

Rimstigen from Bakka/TuftoNew hiking trail to the mountaintop Rimstigen overlooking the Nærøyfjord.

FlåmsdalenTake the train to Vatnahalsen or Myrdal and walk along the old railway construction works road known as «Rallarvegen» back to Flåm. The whole trip takes 4–5 hours. The Flåm Railway has 7 stops between Flåm and Myrdal. If you want a shorter walk, i.e. 2–2,5 hours, board the train at Berekvam station.

UpseteTake the train from Flåm to Myrdal or Upsete. From Upsete, you can walk to Grindaflethytta and on to Undredal (Langhuso), Flåm or Stalheim. There is a bus, which runs between Voss – Stalheim – Langhuso – Flåm. Alternatively, walk from Langhuso to Undredal and take the boat from there.

UndredalWalk along the fjord to Stokko. Steep path to Hovdongo.

Styvi/mail roadThe royal mail road from Styvi to Bleiklindi is part of the old postal route network between Oslo and Bergen. The walk is approx. 4 km (each way) and the round trip takes approx. 2 hours.

Stalheim Scenic hike to Nåli, Kongevegen, Brekkedalen and to the foot of the road monument «Stalheimskleivi».

Fjordview WalkAlong Aurlandsvegen about 10 km from centre of Aurland. Walk 10 minutes to overlook the Aurlandsfjord. Unmarked path direc-tion radio antenna. Path back to starting point. 30 – 45 min.

CyCling – rAllArVegenRALLARveGen HAUGASTØL – FLåmRallarvegen is an 80 km cycle path from Haugastøl – Finse – Halling skeid via Vatnahalsen to Flåm. There are another 43 km on the west side of the Gravhals-tunnelen tunnel from Upsete via Raundalen to Voss. Due to the difference in level between Hau-gastøl, 988 metres above sea lev-el – via Taugevatn, 1.301 metres above sea level to Flåm, 2 me-tres above sea level, most people choose to cycle westwards. NSB (Norway’s National Railway) runs a separate bike train between Oslo and Voss. There is usually a lot of snow along the highest parts of the track during the early season, when visitors are advised to take the bike train from Finse to Hallingskeid. Finse 1.222 metres above sea level, is Norway’s highest railway sta-tion. At Finse you’ll find the DNT Finsehytta, Finse 1.222 (ho-tel) and the Rallarmuseet museum. 21 km from Finse and 15 km before the Myrdal crossroads, you’ll find Hallingskeid at 1.110 metres above sea level. There’s a self-service DNT cabin and a railway station. The road then descends sharply amidst waterfalls and the beautiful scenery of western Norway. Care should be taken at Klevagjelet where the path runs along a narrow cliff ledge. At Myrdal we have Café Rallaren and on Vatnahalsen there is a mountain hotel. The last 20 km runs through Flåmsdalen valley and stunning local landscape. The descent in height here is 865 m, and there are 21 sharp bends along the uppermost part of the road – be sensible and hop off your bike!

UTLADALEN –Daily guiding/bicycle hireThe Vettisfossen waterfall was given protected status 1924. With a free fall of 275 meters it is the highest wa-terfall in Northern Europe. We recommend that you start your trip from the car park at Hjelle, and then follow the Folkevegen road to Vetti, from where there is a path to the waterfall. The trip takes 3 to 4 hours.

Vetti gard og Turiststasjon, a farm rich in tradition dating from around 1120, is set in drama tic natural surround-ings. The farm has been in-volved in tourism ever since the early 19th century. An ideal stop for all walkers in the area.

The utladalen landscape conservation area (314 square kilometres) was established in conjunction with the Jotunheimen National Park. it comprises large parts of the utladalen valley and adjoin-ing side valleys. The area contains several old farms and mountain pasture farmsteads of historical interest.

Utladalen Naturhus, Utladalen – with café, exhibition and film. utladalen Naturhus is a nature centre situated at Skåri, an old farm. Farming here ceased in the early 1970s. in 1996 work commenced on the restoration of the old cultural landscape, and the utladalen Naturhus centre was opened in May 1998. run by the utladalen Naturhus foundation, the aim of the centre is to inform visi-tors about the natural and cultural history of utladalen and Western Jotunheimen. The centre also in-cludes the Slingsby Museum.

Avdalen gard (farm) The Avdalen farm is scenically situated on the mountain-side above the beautiful Avdal waterfall in the utladalen valley. The land was cleared for farming in the 16th century. Abandoned in more recent times, the farm has now been restored to provide restaurant, accommodation and meeting facilities. Sleeps approxi-mately 20. The mill house can be seen in operation milling grain.

The fjord landscape is beautiful no matter the season. Most tourists come during summer, but you are welcome to join the growing ranks of visitors who wish to experience a different sea-son. A boat trip on the Nærøyfjorden or a trip on the Flåm Railway is particularly thrilling in winter, when the mountains are snow-covered and the waterfalls freeze to ice. Even though the weather can be changeable, the views are nearly always good and a stroll out on the boat deck is a refreshing experience.

Aurland, Flåm and Lærdal are also easily accessible destinations in winter. You can get there by train, express bus or in your own car. The Norway in a nutshell round trip runs all year and you can stop off en route for a day or more.

The hospitality enterprises that are open all year will welco-me your custom. A stroll around the small villages of Aurland, Flåm and Lærdal is always interesting, and in winter there are no queues in the shops.

There are many good walks in the area, and the mountains have many tempting activities if you are looking for something more challenging.

Skiing in Lærdal? DNT also offers winter skiing tracks in or close to Lærdal and Winter skiing tracks are are staked, with temporary tree branches or poles stuck in the snow or with permanent rods driven into the ground, often marked with red bands. As branches historically were the first markings used, these on-snow routes are called “kvisteru-ter”, literally «branch-marked routes» in Norwegian. Winter way-marking is done for the principal skiing season at Easter, although some routes are waymarked as early as February.

An experience – – All year round!

The Flåm Railway is probably the steepest and most exciting stretch of rail in Europe. The line is 20 kilometres long and has a height difference of 865 meter, from Flåm in the inner end of the Aurlandsfjord to the high mountain station Myr-dal. Caused by the steep gradient, the line runs partly through tunnels that spiral in and out of the mountainside. Throughout the journey you get a grand view towards some of the most be-autiful fjord- and mountain scenery in Norway.

Always on track! The Flåm Railway Museum & Documentation Centre gives you insight into the building of one of the world’s steepest railways, the technical development and the people be-hind this impressive construction work. After a considerable renovation and expanding, an entire new museum and documentation centre was opened in May 2006. The centre offers free entrance!
