2015 Season Outlook

After a record‐breaking andhistory‐making year in 2014,Temple women’s gymnastics andHead Coach Aaron Murphy areset to reach bigger goals andcontinue the success of last sea‐son in 2015.

The Owls are coming offan 18‐17 record from the 2014season with a third place finish atthe ECAC championships. TheOwls produced four USAG All‐Americans at the USAG NationalChampionships, as well as anECAC floor champion, JasmineJohnson. The team also defeatedTowson for the first time in pro‐gram history to cap a winningstreak of 11‐0 through threeweekends of competition in Feb‐ruary.

Returning 15 gymnastsand introducing four newcomerson to the team, Murphy hopes toimprove their third place finish atthe conference championship

and score above the team’s sea‐son high of 192.325. “Deirdreand I have challenged the girlsthis year by training them to beroutine ready in November andnot in December such as lastyear,” said Murphy. “We hopethat the outcome of this will

build their confidence and con‐sistency on the events to be bet‐ter prepared for the beginning ofthe season with a stronger finishat the end of the season.”

Fifth‐year senior captainJasmine Johnson will be one ofthe team’s key returners thisseason. Johnson is coming off afirst place floor exercise finish atthe conference championships,as well as a Second‐Team All‐American finish on vault at theUSAG National Championships.In the 2014 season, she postedseason highs on beam, floor andvault, scoring a 9.675, 9.8 and9.775 respectively. “JasmineJohnson made a statement lastyear with her first place finish onfloor exercise at conference andwants to make an even biggerstatement with the team scorethis year throughout the sea‐son.”

Joining Johnson in a fifthyear of competition is all‐aroundcompetitor Brittanie DeMeno,who earned a career high 9.75on vault last year at the Eagle In‐vitation in March. DeMeno alsoearned a season high all‐aroundscore of 38.15 at the dual meetagainst Ursinus.

Seniors Alexis Arena andLauren Capone are coming off asuccessful 2014 season. Arenaposted scores above 9.6 consis‐tently on both vault and beam,with a season high of 9.75 on thebeam. Capone looks to improveher third place finish on the floorexercise at the conference cham‐pionships with a score of 9.725,

as well as continue her successon the vault where she earnedfirst‐team All American honorson the apparatus at the USAGNational Championships. Caponeposted season highs of 9.8 on

the floor and 9.825 on the vault.Other key returners in‐

clude the Owl’s all‐around com‐petitor sophomore BrianaOdom. Odom earned a First‐Team All‐American honor in theall‐around for her performanceat the USAG National Champi‐onships and earned a seasonhigh all‐around score of 38.5.Also returning from the sopho‐more class will be Victoria Reg‐giani, who’s strong bar workearned her a season high of 9.7at the Towson quad meet lastseason, and Mikaela Postleth‐wait, who worked three eventslast season, earning a 9.575 onvault, 9.35 on bars, and an 8.95on the floor as season highs. Thisseason, both Reggiani andPostlethwait look to contributeon all four events.

Entering her first full sea‐son as an Owl, Junior transferMichaela Lapent made her markon the Owls vault line up lastseason earning a season high of9.6 at the Rutgers quad meet.Lapent looks to break into thelineups of all four events this sea‐son. Also looking to see actionthis season are fellow junior,Danielle Vahala, who trains onvault, beam, and floor exercise,and senior Ali Forcucci, a floorand beam specialist.

Looking to make strongcomebacks are seniorsStephanie Verry and NataliRuzich. Both took a redshirt in2014, but they will be returningto contribute on all four events.Event specialists, Taylor Rakusand Hannah Popper also missedlast season due to injuries, butlooks to make a strong returnson beam and bars, respectively,in the 2015 season.

A notable loss for the 2015season is junior Reagan Oliveri,who tore her Achilles tendon inthe offseason. Last season Oliv‐eri was named the Most Valu‐able Gymnast and earned careerhighs on all four events, tallying a9.6 on vault, 9.8 on bars, 9.8 onbeam, 9.75 on floor and a 38.75in the all‐around. She earned thesilver medal in the beam finals atthe USAG National Champi‐onships and earned First‐TeamAll‐American honors. Oliveri willbe recovering in 2015 to returnfor the 2016 season.

Murphy has added a

strong set of freshman to thisyear’s roster. Kerry Arone, a na‐tive of Westampton, N.J., wasthe state and regional bar cham‐pion in her senior year and qual‐ified for the J.O nationalchampionships. Kayla Kennedy,of York, Pa., is also a successfulbar swinger, taking the state titlein her junior year and placingsecond in the region as a juniorand senior just behind Arone. AsTemple Owls, both girls look tomake a strong impact in theirrookie seasons. “Our freshmanclass looks to make a strong im‐pact on vault and uneven barsfor the Owls this year. All fourfreshmen have what it takes tobreak into the line‐up this sea‐son, and we’ll have to wait andsee at what meet that unfolds.”

Arone and Kennedy arejoined by fellow rookies GiannaGambutti, a three‐time level 10state and regional qualifier andJ.O National Invitational qualifierfrom Wayne, N.J., and GinaTucker, of Staten Island, N.Y.,who was a two‐time level 10state and regional qualifier andcurrent state‐wide high schoolvault record holder.

Assistant coach DierdreMattocks‐Bertotti will return forher third season with the Owls.Last season, she primarilytrained the beam squad, whoearned a season high event scoreof 48.3 and had one of its mem‐bers (Oliveri) place second in thebeam finals at the USAG NationalChampionships.

This season, Mattocks‐Bertotti will continue to focusher efforts on the beam squad,where she hopes to build abrand new squad with only twoof the 2014 beam workers re‐turning (Arena and Odom).“Deirdre has been incredible forthis program and its success all‐around. She will be stepping intothe role of a recruiter and mas‐tering all the skills that go alongwith that position.”

After a revamped presea‐son training schedule, the Owlswill take a flight to Eastern Michi‐gan University on January 9 totake on the Eagles, one weekearlier than the Owls traditionalschedule.

Following the seasonopener, the Owls will visit the na‐tion’s capital for the Lindsey Fer‐ris Invitational at GeorgeWashington University, followedby a home meet on the 24thagainst Ursinus in McGonigleHall. The Owls then travel toNew Hampshire on the 31st andbegin February with a local com‐petition at Penn.

The Ken Anderson Memo‐rial Invitational will be hosted onFebruary 14th, followed bymeets against Ursinus, Pitts‐burgh, Cornell, and a travellingtrip to Iowa State to round outthe regular season. The ECACconference championships willbe hosted by Yale on March 21st.The Owls aim to continue theirpost‐season with NCAA Regionalaction in early April.

Aaron Murphy enters his ninth seasonas the head coach of the Temple women'sgymnastics team. Murphy, who competedfor the Owls on the men's gymnastics squadfrom 1996‐2001, began assisting the lateKen Anderson with the women's program in2002 and eventually moved into his currentrole in November, 2006.

Last season Murphy guided his squad toa third place finish in the ECAC Champi‐onships and the ECAC Floor Champion, Jas‐mine Johnson. Murphy also coached fourUSAG All‐Americans, with two of them beingselected on the first team. Off the mats andapparatuses, Murphy had four student‐ath‐letes named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Ac‐ademic All‐Area Women’s Team.

Murphy was honored as the ECAC'sCoach of the Year for the second time in hiscareer in 2013, despite his Owls earning onlysix wins on the year. During that campaign,Murphy showed his ability to get the mostout of his lineups several times when he wasforced to fluctuate his intended order at thelast minute, due to pre‐meet injuries. Mur‐phy demonstrated a knack for getting hisstudent‐athletes to step up when the pres‐sure was on, which helped members of hissquad receive eight ECAC weekly awardsover the course of the season.

In 2012, Murphy guided the Owls to arecord‐setting performance by his squad atthe annual Ken Anderson Memorial Invita‐tional on Feb. 5. Not only did the Owls takethe title on their home floor, they set theschool record for a combined team totalwith a score of 193.275. Under Coach Murphthat same season, his vault lineup set a newprogram record for their highest score onthe apparatus with a 48.650 at William &Mary in the final meet of the regular season.During the postseason, Murphy saw histeam demonstrate an impressive perform‐ance at the ECAC Championships, where itplaced third and produced Katie Canning asthe program's first‐ever ECAC All‐Around

Champion.

The 2010 season was yet another suc‐cessful endeavor for Murphy and his team.The Owls repeated as third place finishers atthe ECAC Championships, a meet which theyhosted in McGonigle Hall. Moving forwardto the USAG Championships, the Owls qual‐ified for the team competition and saw arecord eight athletes earn USAG All‐Americahonors.

In 2009, Murphy was recognized asECAC Division I Coach of the Year, leading histeam to a school‐best third place finish atthe ECAC Conference Championships. Dur‐ing that run, he also led the team to breakingthe all‐time team record, a mark that stoodfor six years. The Owls posted a team scoreof 192.625 against Cornell on March 15,2009.

Prior to being named head coach, Mur‐phy was the assistant coach for four years atTemple. The 2001 Temple graduate wasnamed the USA Collegiate Assistant Gym‐nastics Coach of the Year in 2004.

In his four years as an assistant at Tem‐ple, Murphy was responsible for spotting allfour events while constructing the strengthand conditioning program. Under his guid‐

ance, the program celebrated 16 USAG All‐American honorees and several new schoolrecords.

Prior to his experience with thewomen's gymnastics program, Murphyspent the 2001‐02 season as an assistantwith the Temple men's program under headcoach Fred Turoff. While responsible forspotting all skill events for safety purposes,he was integral in assisting the men's teamto an ECAC Conference Championship andnational recognition.

In addition to his coaching responsibili‐ties, Murphy was the Public GymnasticsClinic Director at Temple from 2001‐03. Incoaching all ages and skill levels, he utilizedhis several years of experience in supervis‐ing, coordinating and working hands‐on withinner‐city children participating in gymnas‐tics.

A four‐year letterwinner at Temple,Murphy served as a team captain his seniorseasons (1999‐2001). His career as a per‐former, and 2001 U.S. Championship partic‐ipant, is headlined with several honorsincluding the 2001 Bill Braverman Award Re‐cipient for Excellence and the 2001 MostConsistent Gymnast Award.

Murphy, born in Barber‐ton, Ohio, currently resides inUpper Darby, Pa.

Third Season at Temple

Former All‐American Deirdre Mattocks Bertotti is in her third season as the assistant coach for the women’s gymnastics team ather alma mater.

Bertotti, a Temple gymnast from 2003‐2006, still holds a share of the program’s all‐time individual record score on uneven barswith a 9.900, which helped the Owls set a program record team score of 49.050 against Cornell (March 14, 2004) on the apparatus.

Providing support for head coach Aaron Murphy, Berotti is assisting on all events, but is primarily training the balance beamlineup.

Before her return to Temple, she coached at Metzler’s Gymnastics in Downingtown, Pa., where she trained Level 6‐10 gymnasts,while specializing in coaching balance beam routines.

During her gymnastics career at Temple, Bertotti was named the team’s Most Consistent Gymnast in 2004‐05. A year later, shewas elected co‐captain and served on the Student‐Athlete Advisory Council.

Bertotti graduated from Temple with her Bachelor’s degree in Sport and Recreation Management before going on to SaintJoseph’s to earn her Masters’ degree in Adult Learning and Training.

A native of New Berlin, Pa., Bertotti currently resides in Media, Pa. with her husband Steve and their son, Vincenzo.

Third Season at TempleFormerly a gymnast at Docksiders Gymnastics of Millersville, Md, Smith now assists the Owls and coaching staff in a variety of

ways. Aside from daily tasks within the gym, she is in charge of the Owls social media and posts for the team on Facebook (Temple Uni‐versity Women’s Gymnastics), Twitter (@TUWG), and Instagram (@TUW_gym).

Smith is majoring in early childhood and special education.

Third Season at Temple

Former Region 7 gymnast Chris Licameli, from Elite Gymnastics in Amityville, NY will be entering his first season with the Owlsas the Director of Operations.

As the Director of Operations, Licameli’s duties include making arrangements for flights to away competitions, calling hotelsto negotiate the best accommodations, reserving buses for travel, arranging usage of the Temple vans for team travel, making travelitineraries for each weekend, calling restaurants to make large group reservations, helping out with post‐home meet alumni func‐tions, and being involved with coordinating the end of the year banquet.

Along with Licameli’s current position with Temple Women’s gymnastics he coaches for the Philadelphia Boy’s GymnasticsLevel 4 team. He has also coached the past three summers at International Gymnastics Camp in Stroudsburg, PA.

Licameli is in the School of Tourism & Hospitality Management (STHM) and is a Sport & Recreation Management Major witha concentration in Governance & Policy. Licameli was a manager for the Temple University Men’s Basketball team in 2013 and 2014seasons. He hopes to work and/or coach in collegiate women’s gymnastics as a career.
