LET’S GET WIGGY Wednesday 9th September – Get Wiggy for Kids with Cancer. Wig Wednesday is a day

where we will support tamariki who have Cancer and have to face the world with no hair. We would love our tamariki to come to school in their House colours and sporting a wacky hair do or wonderous wig for the day. Please could we ask that they also bring a gold coin

donation to support the Child Cancer Great prizes up for grabs.

Members

Our last few newsletters have contained our students stories, artwork, photographs of science

experiments, students participating in Kapahaka and Production, students baking and so many

other aspects of rich teaching and learning programmes that are offered at Whangamarino School.

Today you will find yet more in this one – enjoy! Literacy and Numeracy learning provide a

strong basis for students to access the curriculum across the whole New Zealand Curriculum and

Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

While all of our tamariki experience success, learning is not linear. At times, when our tamariki

struggle to make the progress teachers and parents want them to make, we have solid Action Plans

in place to support them to get there. Although our kura has been closed for a number of weeks

in Terms 1 and 2 due to Covid 19, targeted learning has continued in the classroom. The Matific

numeracy boost programme has been in place across the kura. The literacy boost programmes

like Te Huinga Raukura in Rumaki and Reading Eggs in Auraki (all programmes funded by

Ngati Whakaue Education Endowment Fund), support agencies, teacher aides working alongside

quality teachers in classrooms and parents supporting at home are all part of the recipe for support

and success. Alongside this we employ teachers who believe in all tamariki achieving, are

committed to getting them there and create warm, supportive learning environments for students

to feel safe and take risks with learning.

All learning at Whangamarino School is future-focussed, preparing our tamariki with the

transferable skills necessary to operate in whatever future they may find themselves in. I am

extremely proud of the leaders in our kura Matua Rehua Mihaka, Whaea Tiria Haylock and

Whaea Miriata Oranje for collating and analysing student data for our Board of Trustees. All

data will be shared with you in next weeks newsletter.

Congratulations To Whaea Denice Langendoen for winning our Secretary / Office

Administrator role. Denice has been working with Whaea Tesh in the office for a long time now

and has an excellent grasp on what is expected in this role. We all look forward to continuing to

work with her.

Congratulations to Taine Anapu for winning our Daffodil Day ‘guess the lollies in the jar’

competition. Taine guessed 1150 lollies and there were 1151. Our thanks to everyone who

participated in this fundraiser. We made approximately $250.00 for the Cancer Society.

Welcome – A warm welcome to our new student Anahera Brown-Wyatt. We hope you enjoy

your time with us here at Whangamarino School.

Welcome also to our two new kaiawhina, Whaea Amanda Hunter and Whaea Kayla Bishop.

Production – Maui and the Genie - I am sure you must all appreciate that a School

Production is a considerable undertaking and I would like to congratulate our tamariki for all of

their hard mahi in preparation for our Production. My thanks also to our Director Whaea Angie

Belcher and our kaiako who have been working hard over the last few weeks. For this reason

we are pleased to let everyone know that we will be continuing with our wonderful Production

this term under Alert Level 2. Woohoo, we are all very excited about this decision.

There are rules for gatherings to plays and performances at Alert Level 2, for example (we will

need to keep the cast and backstage crew separate from the audience for the duration of the event.

We can have up to 100 people in our audience at a time. In other words on stage and back stage is

one defined space, and the setting out front is another defined space.

To make this easier for us we have decided to hold two matinee (day time) performances

(Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd September) and one evening performance. The matinee

performances will allow our Koeke, the Kohanga Reo, local trust representatives, Lake Rotoma

School and Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Rotoiti and whanau to attend during the day.

We will be holding only one evening performance (Wednesday 23rd September at 6pm) for

whanau members that work and can only make it at night. For the evening performance we are

able to keep our students here at kura and give them a sausage sizzle for dinner and then start

preparing them with makeup and costumes straight after dinner. However, if you want your child

to go home on the bus first and bring them back at 5pm to get ready that is fine too. At the end of

the evening show all tamariki will need to go home with parents. We will need to confirm

numbers a bit closer to the date for all performances.

A big mihi to Paehinahina Mourea Trust for donating $1,000.00 towards our production. We are

very grateful for this amazing koha!

Emergency Drills - Over the following weeks we will be holding our emergency drills. We will

be practising a fire, earthquake and lockdown drill over the next few weeks. Please talk with

your tamariki about how these drills would work at home if there is a fire, earthquake etc.

Staffing for 2021 Prior to the end of this term I will hear about our potential staffing numbers for

2021 and this will enable me to begin planning for 2021 which I am sure we all hope, will be free

of the ups and downs we have had this year due to Covid 19.

Te Roopu Manaaki Fundraiser this Friday at 6.30pm at Pikiao League Club – A reminder

that this Friday is our Batons Up. We have approximately 30 more battons to sell.

The kitchen will open at 5pm, so please come along and join us for dinner. The menu is below.

We will need parent helpers in the kitchen before and after dinner is served. Please come along

and join in the fun. Any queries please contact Whaea Hilz here at kura.
