Welcome to our Annual Summer Arts Festival.
Each year Summer Arts commences afresh with a bunch of volunteers who willingly dedicate their time into the multi faceted arms of arts in our com-munity. They analyse past events, take note, and make improvements in their determination to create an even better Summer Arts Festival.
It requires drawing together multiple disciplines and personalities and just getting a semblance of order for some events can be a mission in itself! Despite, at times, overwhelming odds this committee boxes on and creates order out of what might otherwise have been chaos.
I take this opportunity to thank that amazing committee of volunteers and in particular our Co-ordinator Heather Hourigan.
May you all enjoy the wonderful events on offer in this 2015 Summer Arts Festival

Shakespeare in the Park
Saturday 7th February at 7.00pm
Shakespeare Outside Theatre Company returns to Whakatāne to present
‘Othello’
“ .....yet that I put the Moor at least into a jealousy so strong that judgment cannot cure.” So says Iago and sets about to do it. He is angry that he has been passed over for a position he believes he should have had,he is jealous of the man who has it. He convinces himself that he has just cause to punish those who have overlooked him. His tools are jealousy and anger and he brings about the downfall of an honest and vigorous man and the deaths of other innocent people. Poison does not have to be drunk, it canbe poured into the ear and have the same effect. Shakespeare has created twounforgetable characters in Othello and Iago. He warns us to be careful who we depend on and urges us to communicate with open heart and ears with those we love.”

Saturday March 21st - 5.00 pmChurch of St George and St John“A Bunch of Fives” HELEN MEDLYN mezzo ROSEMARY BARNES piano
“Rosemary Barnes (pianist) and I have created this recital called “A Bunch of Fives”, which is a group of five song cycles, each consisting of five songs. The recital is - in a way - a “language sandwich”... We start with “Let Us Garlands Bring”, a cycle which features five well-known songs from Shakespearean plays put to the glorious music of Gerald Finzi. Next we add a little French flavour in the form of Ravel’s “Cinq Melodies Populaires Grecques”, a cycle of five short folk songs with words translated from the Greek by Calvocoressi. The ‘meat’ in the language sandwich of the recital is Wagner’s “Wesendonck Lieder”. Here are five wistful poems by Mathilde Wesendonck wrapped, by Wagner, in a chromatic-harmonic style of music which, later, was to pervade his opera, “Tristan and Isolde”. The other side of the sandwich is, again, French and English. Firstly, Poulenc’s “Banalites”, five songs of travel based on the characterful and colourful poems of Guillaume Apollinaire; and, lastly, a taste of America, with Leonard Bernstein’s quirky and fun “I Hate Music...!”, a cycle of “five kid songs” with words by the composer. Our recital is approximately one hour in duration with no interval.Rosie and I have long wanted to do this recital, but have not had the opportunity until now because of our busy schedules, however - twelve years after our initial discussion about doing this - we are happy to be finally putting it together.” Helen Medlyn
An enthralling hour of song performed by two of New Zealand’s favourite concert artists.
March 2015Saturday 14th March at 7.00pm“Broadway and Beyond”Church of St George and St John, 30 Domain RdScott Braid Vocal Studios in support of Hospice Eastern Bay of Plenty, presents an evening of song, from Broadway favourites, to cross-over Classical through to Contemporary.
