The Obituary

Arthur L. Wharton II was born on January 3, 1926 the

only child of the late Arthur L. and Ruby May

Wharton in New York City. He received his early

education in the public schools of upper Manhattan,

matriculating at the George Washington Senior High

School.

He joined the United States Coast Guard following

graduation in January 1945 where he served as a radio

operator on the SS Richard Henry Lee for several

tours. He was honorably discharged from military

service in San Francisco, California. Arthur then

relocated to Washington, DC where he enrolled at

Howard University pursing a degree in Architecture.

It was on this campus where he met the love of his

life, the former Betty Lou Golden whom he married

on October 1, 1949. Theirs was a loving union that

was blessed with three children—Carla, Lonnie

Reynard, and Arthur III.

Following a brief employment with the District of

Columbia government, Arthur worked as a

Cartographer with the Central Intelligence Agency in

Langley, Virginia. He retired from federal service

after 32 years on April 1, 1983.

He was baptized into the membership of the First

Church of Seventh-day Adventist on October 21, 1971

by Elder Luther R. Palmer. He was immediately

appointed to the office of deacon where he served for

34 years. He also served in the Treasury Department a

number of years and worked with the Pathfinders and

Community Services department as needed. A lover

of children, he distributed candy and sweets earning

the title, “The Candy Man.”

He leaves to mourn his passing, his devoted and

faithful wife, Betty, his daughter, Carla, sons, L.

Reynard and his wife Rhoda, Arthur III and his wife

Andria, grandsons, Lauren and Lowen Wharton and

Evan Wright, a niece, Madeline Swan, and a host of

friends, neighbors, church members, and well wishers.
