Over 8,000 members attended the Show on each

of the four days

Welcomefrom RHASS Chief Executive Alan Laidlaw

It is with pride that I reflect on my first Show as Chief Executive. As a longstanding member and visitor to the Show, I gave little thought

to the amount of work that goes into delivering this world class event. It is only through experience that you can fully appreciate the dedication and passion it takes to deliver the Royal Highland Show.

Just like our exhibitors, months of preparation combined with decades of knowledge held in the trusted hands of longstanding staff, directors and contractors makes this an event like no other.

The Show delivers on so many levels, certainly socially and more importantly commercially - a lot of business takes place during the four days and for many months after following connections made.

The true test of success is feedback from the agricultural industry, both in Scotland and wider afield. There is no doubt that the 2017 Show was an exceptional event, however we are not complacent and work has already commenced for next year. Our objective is to understand how can we make the Show better, keeping in mind our heritage to remain true to our core values as an award-winning agricultural show and Society.

On behalf of RHASS Directors and staff I thank you all for your continued support, in whatever role you play in making RHASS and the Royal Highland Show a continuing success. You, as a member, are hugely valued and we will continue to work to deliver a Society to be proud of.

Alan Laidlaw, Chief Executive

RHASS NEWS UPDATE

OUR NEW COMMERCIAL

DIRECTOR

RHASS has appointed Lorne Scott to oversee the strategic commercial

direction of RHASS and its 280-acre Ingliston site. Lorne will also look to drive forward the growth of the Royal Highland Centre, building on the success of the 220 events which run annually.

Lorne joins RHASS from Media 10, where he worked on some of the UK’s most successful events, including Grand Designs Live and The Ideal Home Show. He was previously Head of Sales at BiP Solutions Ltd, a global market leader in the provision of cutting-edge solutions and services that facilitates business between the public and private sector.

Commenting on the new Commercial Director appointment, RHASS Chief Executive Alan Laidlaw said:

“Lorne brings valuable know-how to both RHASS and the Royal Highland Centre and will be an asset to the management team. His knowledge of business development strategies and brand management will be invaluable as we look to build on the Royal Highland Centre’s already well-established reputation as one of Scotland’s premier event spaces.”

Sixteen-year-old showjumper Fraser Reed from St Andrews and his pony Harry were selected to jump for Great Britain on the Pony European Team in Hungary in July. Fraser is a regular at the

Royal Highland Show and won the 148cm class in 2015 on Bay Friend. This year he also qualified a horse in all four senior Scottish finals and was placed second in the Classic final on the Sunday.

RHASS made a charitable donation of £1,500 to support Fraser to compete in Hungary and to help with the added transport costs. The British team won silver in the team event, helped by a fantastic clear from Fraser and Harry. It was an amazing experience for Fraser and his family are extremely grateful to RHASS for the support.

BULGARIAN DELEGATION

As a Society, we work to establish and promote links both nationally and internationally. We were delighted to welcome a recent delegation of Bulgaria’s most successful and influential

businesspeople to the Royal Highland Show where they met with George Burgess, the Scottish Government’s Head of Food, Drink and Trade. As the first delegation from Bulgaria to visit Scotland, the historic meeting marked a significant first step towards a lucrative bilateral trading relationship between the two countries.

CHAIRMAN DESIGNATEJAMES WARNOCK MBE

James Warnock has been elected as Chairman Designate for RHASS. James

farms 500-acre Sandilands Farm near Lanark with his wife and daughter. He is a former Young Farmers’ Club and Area Chairman, as well as a previous branch and district NFU Chairman. He was Chairman in 1995/96 of the British Texel Sheep Society after serving 21 years on the committee, and is still a member of the society’s disciplinary panel.

James has served as a RHASS Director and was Chairman of RHET for eight years and has also chaired PR&E Committee. He serves on his local RHET committee as a farmer host and classroom speaker, commentates at eight shows, including the Royal Highland, and has judged all the Royals, including the Great Yorkshire. James was made a fellow of the Royal Agricultural Society in 2012 and was awarded an MBE in 2015 for services to education and communication in agriculture.

On his election, James said, “I am hugely honoured to be elected Chairman Designate for RHASS - an organisation of which I have been a Director for several years. RHASS and its educational charity RHET play an important role in improving the understanding of rural Scotland and I will work with my usual vigour and enthusiasm to continue this work.”

STUDY TOUR TO SOUTH AFRICA

In July, as part of its ongoing commitment to young people in agriculture, RHASS offered an all-expenses-paid 12-day trip to South Africa hosted by the Royal Agricultural Society of the

Commonwealth(RASC) Next Generation Programme. Open to RHASS members under 40, or those nominated by a RHASS member, the study tour leaves the UK on 29th August. The group will visit an agriculturally rich region of the world, and learn about a wide range of farming systems. The itinerary includes visits to various farms, a tour of a tea factory, a visit to a game resort and travel by mule cart to see how donkeys are used for ploughing and harvesting. Jenny McKerr, from Forth Mains Farm in Lanarkshire, was the successful applicant and we look forward to reporting on the trip in the next issue of Society.

POST-SHOW OVERVIEW

The Royal Highland Show proved once again to be a very successful event and

demonstrated the enduring appeal of Scotland’s iconic celebration of farming, food and rural life.

Visitor numbers reached record levels for the fourth year in a row: 190,028 people came through the gates over the four days of the Show. Ticket sales were up 6% this year, of which 56% were bought in advance and over 30,000 children visited the show for free.

The number of trade stand exhibitors was equally strong and many enjoyed very significant sales. Indeed, over £8 million is estimated to have been spent on shopping at the event. Scotland’s Larder Live featured 120 of the finest food and drink exhibitors from across Scotland and the UK. This popular food showcase also staged the inaugural Scottish bread championships to join the national cheese, butter and ice cream championships. In the cookery theatre, award-winning chefs demonstrated their skills, including Kilted Chef Craig Wilson, Andrew Whitley of Bread Matters and Edinburgh’s Paul Wedgwood.

The importance of the Royal Highland Show at a political level was evident in the number of governmental heavyweights who attended. These included Michael Gove MP, David Mundell MP, Ian Duncan MP, Fergus Ewing MSP, Ruth Davidson MSP, Maureen Watt MSP, Willie Rennie MSP, George Lyon MEP and Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon MSP.

There was lively discussion elsewhere too, as the Oxford Farming Conference brought its Oxford Union debate to the Show to discuss ‘This house believes UK agriculture will thrive outwith the European Union’. NFUS also unveiled its Change (new Agricultural Policy for Scotland Post-Brexit) discussion document.

On the cultural side, Show organisers introduced a Poet-in-Residence for the first time. Rural poet, and current Poet Laureate of Glasgow, Jim Carruth, recited rural-inspired poetry around the Showground. A packed programme of music entertained the crowds over the four days with an enjoyable mix of jazz, ceilidh bands, gospel choirs, brass bands, schools from all over Scotland and no fewer than five pipe bands.

The Show was also the chosen venue for the announcement of Team GB’s curling team for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in South Korea, reflecting curling’s strong links with farming heritage.

The Aberdeenshire initiative, led by Lord Aberdeen and supported by the Presidential team, showcased the area’s outstanding tourism appeal in the ‘Aberdeenshire Village’, where over 30 businesses offered a taste of what the region has to offer, from food and drink to arts and crafts.

The temporary Members’ Area provided a great deal of interest, comment and positive feedback, which will have a constructive impact on future discussions about the permanent facility.

Sheena HornerGALLOWAY CHILLIES, WIGTOWN

Galloway Chillies grows chilli plants, from mild to super-hot, and produces a range of preserves, hot toddies and mustards.

“The Royal Highland Show is the highlight of my year. It’s a chance for me to catch up with friends, colleagues and customers over the four days of the Show.

I started Galloway Chillies in 2012 and have exhibited at the Royal Highland Show for three years. I’m from a farming background so I know the Show well. I exhibit elsewhere but the Royal Highland Show is the biggest showcase for me. It’s a good information piece and brings my brand to a wider audience. It’s also a great launch platform for new products – we’re using it this year to ‘launch’ ourselves with our new rebrand.

Scotland’s Larder Live has a really good layout and we get the same stand every year, which makes it easier for us and for our customers to find us. I attract lots of return customers but I also pick up trade enquiries. I offer exclusive show deals to encourage people to try and buy while they’re here. The best thing about the Show is the atmosphere and the buzz. I try to mix exhibiting with seeing what else there is across the showground.”

Bob Corsie BREEZE ART GALLERY

EDINBURGH, PEEBLES AND BALLOCH

“We decided on two stands on 13th Avenue for this year’s Royal Highland Show – one for our selection of original fine art and limited edition prints and the other for McMoos artist Jennifer Hogwood.

We helped launch her works at the Show four years ago and her popularity in Scotland has grown so much since then, we now have a dedicated stand for her works. Visitors and fans of her work also have the chance to meet her on the stand over the weekend.

The Show brings us new clients, indeed people we only see here. We’ve tried lots of shows but enjoy the Royal Highland Show because of the quality of the crowds and the excellent footfall. We always get good sales so it’s well worth our time being here. We look forward to the Royal Highland Show every year – it’s the social event of the year for us! We get to meet existing customers year after year and find new ones.

For us, it’s not about a one-off sale at the Show: we build ongoing relationships with clients that last for years where we can advise them on their art choices.”

Kirsty Donald CHAMPION WOOL HANDLER

“Sheep-shearing and wool-handling are popular attractions with the Royal Highland Show crowds but there is a serious side, too. The better the wool is presented, the better the chance of maximum profit. A good wool-handler is worth paying for: a point worth getting over to farmers as world wool prices are not great. Wool-handling involves skirting, rolling and classing the shorn fleece. Competing highlights the importance of wool-handling and the amount of money there is to save.

There’s huge camaraderie at the Royal Highland Show. We’re all rivals but help each other, too. It’s good to see up-and-coming young shearers and wool-handlers compete. I encourage them as we want them to keep coming. Our displays at the Show are an education as much as entertainment for farmers and the public. Anything that helps increase the price of wool is a good thing. I try personally to make a difference and increase awareness of all the uses of wool.

You’d be hard-pushed to get the variety of the Royal Highland Show elsewhere with the sheer diversity of what’s on offer.”

Gareth Corrie JCB COMMERCIALS, NORTHERN IRELAND

“This year marks our fourth year at the Show, but our first as JCB Commercials. The Royal Highland Show fits in nicely with the required 30-day standstill after the Balmoral Show in Northern Ireland and marks our last show of the summer before the autumn events.

We come to show our cattle and try to win. A win at the Royal Highland Show can maximise the price we achieve for a breeding heifer. We won a first last year with J-Lo but nothing for this year’s Kim-K. As we have other jobs, too – pig farmer, builder – it’s more of a hobby. Some people play golf: we breed cattle! The Royal Highland Show is a good opportunity to put our cattle out there to see how they compare.

I think the Royal Highland Show is a very well-managed event. The stewards get everyone ready for the Ring in good time to keep things running smoothly. It’s very much part of our calendar every year and acts as a semi-working holiday when we can catch up with other cattle breeders.”

Joe Bell MANAGING DIRECTOR, KVERNELAND

“Kverneland specialises in farming implements on the back of tractors, everything from tillers and spreaders to feeder wagons. We’ve exhibited at the Royal Highland Show for over 30 years now. Last year we won a Silver Technical Innovation Award for our i-plough and this year achieved Gold for the Exacta TL GEOspread. It’s welcome recognition that what we do is valued.

For us, the Royal Highland Show is a complete agricultural show because it ticks all the boxes. We meet dealers, customers, visitors and families. It gives us a chance to meet existing Kverneland users as well as sell new products. It also gives our customers the chance to ask questions about any of our products, such as using the control box or programming. We have a team of sales, service and technical advice staff on the stand so we can cover most queries there and then.

The Royal Highland Show is financially the most successful machinery event for us of the major six shows, including a trade one. It’s also an opportunity for us to interact with the farming community and update our 37 specialist UK dealers on what’s new.”

safety. Exported into five countries and unique among transporters of this type, the T35 carries

its own battery, which charges through the electrical hook-up to the towing vehicle.

GOLD AWARD FOR CONTINUOUS OUTSTANDING MERIT

KVERNELANDfor the Exacta TL GEOspread

Another former silver medal winner, the Kverneland Exacta TL GEOspread is a

Technically ExcellentThe annual RHASS Technical Innovation Awards, sponsored by Hillhouse Quarry Group, encourage and recognise innovation in the design and manufacture of machines, equipment and appliances which advance the effective and efficient practice of either agriculture, horticulture, equestrian, forestry, renewable energy or estate services.

They are also an important and influential accolade for manufacturers, distributors, providers and inventors as they provide a distinctive and prestigious means to promote new ideas, whether conceived in the farm workshop or on the test benches of multi-national manufacturers. This year, two golds, four silvers and two certificates of commendation were awarded to the 2017 winners.

Discovery Centre refurbishment

Improvement works took place across the Showground at Ingliston in the months leading up to the Show.

As part of these upgrade works, both Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick Ltd and Richmack Ltd generously donated their time and expertise to undertake the refurbishment and repair of various parts of RHET’s Discovery Centre on Avenue Q. These works included a new tarmac floor, entrances, upgraded utilities and the refurbishment of the volunteer area. All of us at RHET would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick Ltd and Richmack Ltd for all their hard work.

THE ROYAL HIGHLAND EDUCATION TRUST

Schools Education ProgrammeThe Royal Highland Education Trust had

a fantastic turnout at this year’s Show for their education programme aimed at primary and secondary schools. 175 school groups visited the Discovery Centre on Avenue Q on Thursday, with a further 93 groups on Friday, totalling over 7160 children in the first two days of the Show.

There was a whole host of interactive educational activity going on inside the Centre, including sessions on machinery, forestry, cooking, baking, potatoes, fisheries, sustainability, food science and healthy eating.

All of these activities were provided free of charge for schools. Thanks go to RHET’s partners Quality Meat Scotland, Aldi, SEFARI, BAGMA, Soil Association Scotland, Love Food Hate Waste, Branston Potatoes, Scottish Bee Keepers Association and the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation.

RHET Manager Katrina Barclay said,

“This has been another fantastic show for RHET. We have had a very positive response to our supporters’ programme and, as a non-profit charity, we really appreciate all the help and generous support we receive.”

Moo Crew AUCTIONFollowing a tour of Scotland, four bespoke, colourful, but well-behaved, fibreglass cows were brought to the Highland Show by Aldi Scotland to be auctioned off, with all proceeds going to RHET. The Moo Crew were designed in 2016 by pupils from schools in Inverness, Edinburgh, Dumfries and Aberdeen. Lawrie & Symington auctioneer Primrose Beaton did the honours, with some competitive bidding reaching into the thousands.

BUS FUNDING

For some schools, the cost of a bus can be the deciding

factor as to whether they attend the Show. Thanks to a travel bursary sponsored by SP Energy Networks (SPEN), nine schools had their transport partially or fully funded, allowing them to come along and see us. This was the third year of sponsorship from SPEN, who also delivered hands-on activities for children at their own stand on the Showground.

RHET would like to thank SPEN on behalf of all of the schools who were able to visit the Show as a result of their support.

TRAM BINGO CHALLENGENew for 2017, a tram bingo challenge involved participants stopping

off at six different locations across the Showground to answer clues from their bingo card at each stop with the chance to win an iPad. All the questions were linked to the Eatwell Guide: a prominent teaching resource in schools across Scotland. The tram trail proved very popular with families exploring the Showground and Breagha Macdonald, from Clydebank, has been announced as the lucky winner.

RHET SUPPORTER RELAUNCH

The relaunch of RHET’s supporter programme this year encouraged a number of new people to sign up to support the work of the

Trust. This much-needed support goes towards educating young people across Scotland. The aim is to enhance the link between producers and consumers of the future. New for this year, supporters received an enamel supporter’s badge and were entered into a prize draw to win a week’s holiday, courtesy of Argyll Holidays.

To find out how you can become a RHET supporter, please give us a call on 0131 335 6227 or email [email protected]

A FUTURE IN FOOD & FARMINGRHET organised a free event for teachers all about the roles and skills required to work in the agricultural sector. Developing the Young Workforce attracted 28 teachers who received complimentary tickets to attend. Sessions were delivered by RHET, Forestry Commission, Food and Drink Federation Scotland, Queen Margaret University, Scottish Sea Farms, Scottish Textiles Skills Partnership and BAGMA. Many thanks to SRUC for hosting.

New and returning activities provide food for thought

Thousands of children participated in an array of new and returning activities and workshops this

year. A new session by the Scottish Salmon Producers Association (SSPO) gave pupils the chance to taste different seafood and to learn more about various species and aquaculture. The award of a ‘Health & Wellbeing Day’ for the most positive school was won by Eyemouth Primary School.

The honey tent, a Show favourite, saw over 400 children participate in workshops with plenty of honey-tasting and candle-making.

LUNCHBOX CHALLENGE

Another new activity this year asked children to use their imagination to design and pack a lunchbox

that is healthy, nutritious and makes the most of local seasonal produce. Using the Eatwell Guide, they were invited to draw and label what they would want to put in their own lunchbox. The lunchbox challenge highlighted the importance of healthy eating, as well as decision-making for the children that took part. Activities like these help to create a more mindful generation of young people, and also increase awareness of seasonal, Scottish produce.

Congratulations to Charis Wright from South Morningside Primary School who won a bread-making session delivered by RHET for her school.

Bar since 1982 and in 1995 was appointed Queen’s Counsel. He has developed a specialisation in rural property and agricultural law, which includes agricultural cases for both landlords and tenants. He took the case concerning the allocation of Single Farm Payment to the Court of Justice of the European Union: the only agricultural case referred to Europe by the Scottish Land Court.

His expert knowledge also includes planning and environmental cases; renewable energy including windfarms and hydro developments; and coal-bed methane extraction. In all of these, he has acted on behalf of landowners, planning authorities, developers, NGOs and local communities. He is the author of textbooks on Agricultural Law in Scotland, Crofting Law and other legal books.

He was a member of the Scottish Government’s Agricultural Holdings Law Review Group and is currently assisting the Scottish Government with the review of Small Landholders legislation. He was Chair of the United Kingdom Environmental Law Association in Scotland, where he continues as a patron, and is Chair of the Crofting Law Group.

Prior to becoming an advocate, Sir Crispin served for 18 years in the Royal Highland Fusiliers. He took part in and led climbing and scientific expeditions to the Antarctic, the Northern Chilean ice cap, Greenland and the Himalayas. These expeditions inspired an interest in environmental conservation, particularly climate change, evidenced in Patagonia by retreating glaciers, which were surveyed by his team. He was a trustee of the John Muir Trust conservation charity for 16 years, during which time the Trust bought Sandwood Bay, Schiehallian and Ben Nevis. He has also been a board member of the Scottish Youth Hostel Association.

Sir Crispin is married to the daughter of a farmer who was initially a Borders tenant farmer and ultimately a farm owner in Angus. They have four children, the eldest of whom is a poultry vet married to a Herefordshire farmer. Sir Crispin’s hobbies include hill walking, mountain biking and sailing.

Vice-PresidentSir Robert M Clerk Bt OBE

Sir Robert graduated from Wye College with a degree in

Agriculture. He pursued a career as a Land Agent with national firm Smiths Gore, where he was a partner from 1980 to 2003. Originally based in the Borders and Edinburgh, he opened the firm’s

office in Morayshire in 1974. Widely experienced in the management of rural properties, from Western Isles crofting estates to Borders arable farms, he has had a long association with the Crown Estate’s farming and salmon fishing interests in Scotland.

Sir Robert is a keen salmon fisherman with a particular interest in the management of salmon fisheries. He has served on many committees, including the Salmon Advisory Committee (latterly as Chair), the Scottish Salmon Strategy Task Force and the Atlantic Salmon Trust, of which he was Chair from 2005 to 2010. In 1995, he was appointed OBE for services to the salmon fishing industry.

Along with other family members, Sir Robert is the owner of Penicuik Estate in Midlothian, now a widely diversified rural business. It was first acquired in 1654 by his ancestor John Clerk. Sir Robert is closely involved in the management of the estate. This includes hand farming, tenanted farms and cottages, forestry and renewables enterprises. It is centred upon a highly regarded designed landscape and heritage property, which provides wide-ranging recreational opportunities for the many visitors it attracts each year.

Appointed Lord-Lieutenant of Midlothian in 2013, Sir Robert is patron of a variety of local charities. He is married with three children, including a daughter who farms in New Zealand with her husband.
