“What am I curious about?”
Generating curiosity about water to start the project from the interests of children…
1. Using a water slide show
Use a slide show of diverse water images (examples follow below) to ask young people to consider questions they want to ask about water -
e.g. daily life, scientific properties, geographical: (rivers, dams, climatic change, floods, droughts, social effects), cultural and religious, etc
Questions the children wish to ask
about water can be written
on water droplet worksheets, posters, PowerPoint's etc
and shared in the classroom at the beginning of the process…
For recorded examples of children's questions, please see the beginning of Primary Stories film:
1. Mellers Overview and Evaluation of Get Wet Project Year 1 at http://www.getwet.org.uk/primary-school-stories
or via https://vimeo.com/84872580
2. Creating an installation
Create a space in your classroom, hall, corridor or an outdoor location. It can exist for the day, the week or the term.
It may be sited by a significant water feature or amenity in school, above or around a sink or water pipes.
Gather water related objects - watering cans, taps, swimwear, hosepipes, goggles, armbands, buckets, liter jugs, wellingtons etc.
Add other items relating to “virtual water” e.g. jeans , t- shirts , apples, milk cartons, cup of coffee, a potato.
Arrange these objects and items in an interactive display
Use the installations created as a platform to gatherpersonal stories from your class - a memory or moment connected to water in their lives
Arrange these objects and items in an interactive display
