What are Home Owners Insurance Riders? In an ideal world, we all have excellent insurance agents who take the time to sit down with us
and make sure we understand the ins and outs of our coverage. They would help us understand
what, exactly, is covered by our policy and if we need additional coverage for our individual
situation. Chances are, however, that you found you home owners insurance by going online and
searching for “Reno, Nevada Home Insurance” and you took the cheapest policy you came
across. What you may not understand is that basic home owners insurance does not cover
everything in your home. You may need additional coverage.
Riders to the Rescue The additional coverage comes in the form of riders. The good news is that you can add riders to
your policy to cover items that your average home owners insurance simply does not cover. The
bad news is that these riders will cost you a little extra. In this day and age, almost everything
costs you a little extra. Riders are for covering you possessions that are not covered or are limited
in their coverage. Most policies cover the basics while leaving out certain things that are truly
valuable. These policies can also refuse to cover items if they are stolen. In order to determine if
you need a rider, be aware of which ones are common and which aren’t.
Jewelry Riders You basic home owners insurance covers around $1000 dollars of jewelry. However, it probably
does not cover the jewelry in the event of theft. For this purpose, many people opt to add a
jewelry rider to their insurance.
Actually, jewelry riders are fairly
inexpensive and worth the money. If
you own a sizeable amount of
jewelry in your home, then this rider
is probably right for you. Catalog all
of your jewelry and list in the policy
so that the value of each piece is
known to you and your insurance
provider.
Silverware Riders This is another of the common riders.
Theft coverage is not included in
your run-of-the-mill policy. This
means that if somebody breaks in and makes off with your great grandmother’s antique silver
dinnerware, you won’t receive a dime from the insurance agency. Consider adding a silverware
rider to your policy if you possess antique and expensive silverware.
Office Equipment Riders Many homes have a large office in them with thousands of dollars in expensive equipment. Most
home owners policies, however, only insure these items up to $1000. Chances are that is the cost
of your home computer alone. Evaluate how much you have in your home office and look into
adding an office equipment rider.
Do Your Research Be sure to thoroughly comprehend your home owners insurance policy. Having adequate
coverage is important and is accomplished by doing your research into plans, providers and
riders. You may need other riders like artwork, antique or Oriental rug riders. Evaluate how
much you have in your home to determine the level of coverage that is right for you.
