What do all of these
pictures have in common?
Sound / microwaves etc
Core Physics – Energy
L/O :- To understand what waves are and how they transfer energy
“”
Exam Date -
What does the Ruben’s Tube show us?
There are 2 types of wave Longitudinal Waves
The energy travels in the same direction as the
movement
Transverse Waves
The energy travels in a different direction to
the movement
Transverse waves can travel through a
vacuumWhich type of wave do you think sound
is?
Sound must be a longitudinal wave because it cannot travel
through a vacuum. Sound travels by passing vibrations through
particles (movement in the same direction as the energy)
Which type of wave do you think light is?
Light must be transverse because it travels from
the sun to the earth through space which is a
vacuum
What are the different parts of the wave called?Amplitu
de
This affects
the volume of the sound
Wavelength (m)
This affects the pitch of the sound
Frequency Hz (number of waves per second)
This affects the wavelength and pitch
Do all waves travel at the same speed?
All E-M waves obey the Wave Equation:
Wave speed (v) = frequency (f) x wavelength ()
in m/s in Hz in m
V
f
Some Calculations
b) If the same waves travels across the pond at a speed of 5m/s, what is their wavelength?c) hack wants to see what happens if he throws Jill into different ponds. Finish off his results
Pond Freq (Hz)
WL(m)
V(m/s)
A 20 0.3
B 2 7
C 5 1.2
D 0.4 5
These waves all have a wavelength of 12m. What is their velocity?a) 2Hz b) 5Hz c) 0.5Hz d) 1000Hz
These waves all have a frequency of 10Hz. Use their velocity to work out the wavelength
a) 3m/s b) 2500m/s c) 0.2m/s d) 100cm/s
Jack threw his annoying little sister Jill in the garden pond. Jill made a large splash and waves rippled across the pond. a) If it takes 2 seconds for a full wave to pass, what is the frequency?
If you were a wave, what would your
wavelength be????What about your
frequency???
Your Wavelength
could be your stride
Your Frequency would be the
number of strides per
second
So how could you work out your speed? How could you check your calculations?
Why do all of these pictures represent waves?
