Welcome to another issue of WEFGW online

magazine. We are so pleased that you enjoy

reading the articles .

Well we are entering a new season. Fall is

upon us. Things begin to show their last

blast of color before winter sets in. Fall is a

month of splendor and variety of colors.

The colors of fall are breathe taking. Just as

the seasons change in nature so do the

seasons of our lives . Life seasons are not

based on age or years. Life seasons are

based on events and circumstances. Some

of you maybe in the spring ,where all things

are new and young and just beginning to

grow and prosper. Spring life seasons always

look forward to what new and inviting.

Some of you may be in the summer life

seasons. This is when events and

circumstances are at their most glorious .

The days are long and luxurious. Nothing is

out of reach. All your dreams and wishes are

seemingly coming true, The sunshine of easy

success is in your eyes.

After summer there is always a fall. When

the circumstances and situations of life seem

to be loosing their luster. What brought you

joy and pleasure before has taken a turn for

the worse. No longer do you find joy in the

simple things of summer .The life season of

fall requires that we see beauty in different

shades of green, orange ,reds and yellows.

Beauty is still present just not in the same

hues as in summer.

And now winter in here. With its blanket of

white. crisp air now replaces the heat of

summer and early fall. Winter brings a

different opportunity for beauty’s

appreciation. We learn to appreciate the

truth that the snow reveals and that it holds.

We learn that even though things look bleak

and dreary ,there is hope. Just as the buds

begin to grow deep with in the seemingly

frozen earth, God is working in our winter to

make all things new.

Don’t Give up in your winter, spring is just

around the corner. Appreciate all the

seasons of your life. They are necessary to

develop you and perfect you. Just as it takes

all seasons to make a yearly cycle, your life

can not be completed without experiencing

every life season.

Natural and Beautiful

That’s MeNatural and Beautiful, That is Me. I

t took a little time, for me to see,

That what God gave me, I must, let it be.

Some might ask, who really cares, how you wear, your hair.

Well you see, one day as I sat in my hairdresser’s chair

Ready for the touch up of my relaxed hair,

I wanted it to remain easy to manage.

However, I had a revelation that I was causing my natural hair,

unneeded damage.

Then I recalled the time, when I was a tender young girl.

My grandmother gave me some words; I now call granny’s

pearls.

She said to me, “Your natural hair is beautiful girl”!

“Let what the good Lord gave you, be”!

Tell your self, I am Natural and beautiful, that’s me.

I replied to my granny, How can you say that when my curls are

so tight,

She then said to me, “one day my precious, you will, see the

light”.

Now many years later, and my granny is gone,

I now see she was right and I was wrong.

I wear my hair natural and the light,

I finally see.

Natural and Beautiful, That’s Me.

St Lucia is one of the most beautiful

islands of the Caribbean basin with its

breathtaking natural resources such

as the emerald green covered Piton

Mountains, dense bird- filled

rainforests and mind blowing

waterfalls. Most tourists end up in the

northern area of the island near the

capital city, Castries.

Rodney Bay, Cap Estate and Gros Islet

are home to some of the most sought

after luxury resorts in the world,

where celebrities are frequently

spotted winding to some good reggae,

Soca or calypso music. But you don't

have to be a celebrity to enjoy the

luxuries of this exceptional vacation

spot. Some truly hidden gems that

will not pinch your pocketbook can be

found in the south of the island.

One thing to keep in mind, unlike

some of the other Caribbean islands,

this island is not known for a lively

night scene, except on weekends.

8

Try the Villa Caribbean Dream in Vieux Fort

which offers rates as low as $45 (single) or $55

(double) per night. Included is a stunning view

of the ocean and/or a Salsa lesson or two. Just

minutes from the Hewanorra International

Airport are The Reef Beach Huts and Café.

Rates are only $50 (single) and $60 (double)

and this includes breakfast on the beach.

Page 9: What Every Fat Girl Wants September Issue

During the week, spend your energy

hiking, snorkeling, diving, and

relaxing under waterfalls. Most of

these activities are very reasonable,

some even free. The currency used on

the island is Eastern Caribbean (EC)

which is currently 2.65 to 1 US dollar.

Basically, if something is 15 EC, divide

by 3 to get a price of $5.00

(US). When you are visiting the craft

shops in Choiseul, this will help you to

quickly calculate how much that

beautiful wood carving will cost.

Budget accommodations are easily

found if you know where to look.

The Reef is located on a beautiful

stretch of white sand beach

overlooking the Maria Islands where

leatherback turtles and the rare

turquoise and black zandoli iguana

reside. This is also the perfect spot to

kite and windsurf the Atlantic Ocean.

Meals are also reasonably priced; this

is also a free Wi-Fi spot so don't

forget your laptop.

Renting a car is the best way to enjoy

the island but for budget conscious

travelers, there is island wide bus

service that is very affordable.

Typically they just run along the one

main highway

but if you need to go off this road a

short ways, ask the driver and

they will usually comply. Tip them a

little if they do. The town of Soufriere

has some fantastic attractions.

Among many favorite things to do is a

visit to the Diamond Falls Botanical

Garden which has mineral baths from

the days of King Louis XXIV, where

you can soak and take in the

therapeutic waters that pour straight

from a volcano in a breathtaking

waterfall. The gardens are a visual

treat with luscious tropical flowers,

homemade benches and stunning

waterfalls.

Can you remember being yelled at as a

child? Did you like it ? How did it make

you feel ? What did you want to do

after being yelled at? Did you clench

your fist, curse, make threats ?Now for

the big question -what did it (yelling)

accomplish? One thing it did

accomplish was separation of affection.

Affection was usually placed on hold

until sorries are said and kisses are

exchanged. But that’s not all there is .

The same feelings that you felt as a

child are still felt as an adult. When

you yell, it shows that you are really

angry. In the heat of anger you may

say things you don't really mean and

often times will regret. .

Whatever you say that's hurtful will

surely hurt your mate and to say sorry

may be too late. Yelling is a sign that

you can't control yourself.

THERE has been a loss felt by the

person who was yelled at. To them it

was as if you’d hit them. Yelling has

that effect . Yelling has never solved

any problem. It has just made things

worse, much worst.

If women knew what men thought

about yelling it would

ceaeeeeeeeeeese .

Yelling can cause men to shut down

emotionally.

•In your experience with men what did

you think or feel when you are being

yelled at?

•What reaction came to your mind,

your very first reaction? Be truthful

• Does yelling have a place in a

relationship? Yes or no, and why.

•Is there a difference if it’s a male or

female yelling?10

In My Fathers Hands

In My Fathers Hands, all things will work out right.

Even when things appear dark, remember, in him there is light.

Put your trust in God, in his more than capable hands.

He has ordained for your life, very special plans.

He will bless you and keep you, protecting you from harm.

In my Father’s Hands, there is no need for alarm.

Do not allow earthly cares to cause you to fear,

You are In My Father’s Hands; he keeps you near.

Now rest in his Blessed Assurance,

For In his word, he hath promised the strength for endurance.

Walk in the power he has bestowed upon you,

Trust In God, for all you have been called to do.

In My Father’s Hands, there is joy, peace, protection and Love

He has All Power on Earth and in Heaven Above.

Now walk, Run and Rest, giving your all to the Best,

Know by faith, you can survive any test.

In My Father’s Hands he watches over you, minute-by-minute and day by day.

Just Let Go and Let God have his way, because you are

In My Father’s Hands.

Quick Fix Hair Care

We all have hair and scalp issues from

time to time. The problems that you are

having are not always “your diet”, but

they could be seasonal, the wrong

shampoo or conditioners, or over styling

using too much product and possibly

using it the wrong way. Following are 3

quick fixes that will hopefully help fix

these problems in no time.

Split ends are

usually

caused by over

processing,

over styling,

hair accessories,

rough treatment and also under

conditioning. The only way to really get

rid of split ends is to cut them off, despite

what you’ve heard or all the products

you’ve seen with empty promises at your

local supply. Ends should be trimmed

every 6 to 8 weeks, so please ladies, STOP

holding on to ends that need to be gone!

It just doesn’t look good to have length,

but 3 inches of it is thin because of split

ends. The perfect products for ends

prone to splitting are moisturizing

shampoos and conditioners (including

leave-in

conditioners), hair moisturizers and

pomades. Try to minimize the heat and

definitely protect your hair at night with a

silk bonnet or scarf along with a silk or

satin pillowcase.

Dry, dull hair can come from chemical

over processing, heat damage, salt water,

chlorine, sun exposure and even poor

circulation and poor diet. Using a

moisturizing, sulfate free shampoo will

keep from stripping the natural oils from

the hair and scalp. Use conditioners such

as hair masks, hot oil treatments, deep

conditioning treatments and protein

treatments depending on hair texture and

severity.

One solution that is popular right now and

is a good investment is a hair steamer.

The steaming process will allow the oils

and/or conditioner to penetrate up to 5

times more than a conventional hair dryer

and will definitely leave your hair feeling

soft and moist.

12

Page 13: What Every Fat Girl Wants September Issue

To protect against heat damage, make sure

you use a heat protectant to guard your hair

strands before exposure to heat. Also, look

for products that contain UV protectors on

the label. To make hair more lustrous,

adding a serum to the hair when styling will

give hair a polished finish. Consult a

professional as to proper treatments and hair

maintenance needed.

A Flaking scalp can be very irritating as those

flakes lift up throughout the hair, especially if

it’s combined with itching, tightness and

inflammation. It doesn’t matter if it’s

dandruff, dry scalp eczema or seborrhea

dermatitis, you just want it fixed. Here’s the

quick low down on the common “flaky”

problems you’re facing:

First of all you need to know what you’re

dealing with: When you comb or brush your

hair and you notice tiny, dry, powdery bits on

your dark blouse, you have dry scalp. If the

flakes are larger and look slightly moist or

greasy, they are dandruff. If you have large

greasy flakes with a red, irritated scalp, you

probably have seborrhea.

If the scales stick to the scalp, it may be

psoriasis. Dandruff and dry scalp are both

forms of dermatitis. Dandruff is often

mistaken for dry scalp. It’s said that dandruff

is caused by an overgrowth of yeast that’s

found on even healthy scalps. It is a result of

skin cells dividing and multiplying at an

accelerated rate that they reach the surface

before they die and clump there. These

flakes are white and scaly that can easily

become infected, resulting in scabbing and

inflammation (seborrhea dermatitis), usually

linked with a food allergy or poor diet, and is

aggravated by stress or excessive intake of

dairy products and junk foods.

13

Page 14: What Every Fat Girl Wants September Issue

Dry, flaky scalp can result from poor

circulation, using harsh products causing

natural oils to be stripped from the scalp and

not sufficiently rinsing products from the scalp

properly. Dry scalp can feel tight and

accompanied by flakiness. If you have a dry,

flaky scalp, use a clarifying shampoo (cider

vinegar can be added) to remove dead skin

cells and any build up of shampoo or

conditioner on the scalp. Then try an oil

treatment or scalp cream designed for dry,

itchy scalps.

Dandruff is seasonal, occurring more

frequently and more severely from October to

March, when your hair is exposed to dry

indoor heat. The following rinses can be used

every couple of weeks to help combat the

flakes.

(1) Blend ten drops of thyme essential oil with

100ml of apple juice, massage into the scalp,

leave on for five minutes and rinse and follow

with a mild shampoo.

2) Boil a few sprigs of Rosemary in 2 cups of

water and cool. Rinse through the hair and

massage into the scalp. Herbal antiseptics like

tea tree oil that fights bacteria and yeast are

great alternatives to dandruff shampoos. Also

mild shampoos that include rosemary or sage

can also help to control dandruff and won’t dry

out your hair and scalp.

3)Also take 500mg capsules of evening

primrose oil every day until condition clears.

Itchy red patches are a common sign of eczema

or psoriasis. Consult a Trichologist if unsure. If

you have either, it is more likely than not that

your immune system is under stress. To treat

at home, use a mild, sulfate free shampoo,

then massage aloe vera juice into the scalp,

leave on and style as normal. Aloe contains 18

amino acids as well as numerous vitamins and

minerals.

Aloe also contains anti-inflammatory

properties; anti-bacterial properties, immune

stimulating properties and general tissue repair

properties. Perfect for eczema or psoriasis

inflamed skin.

If your scalp condition does not clear up or is

an extreme case, please don’t go at it alone.

Consult with a Dermatologist.

Dear Dr. Jan ,

My husband and I have been married for over 20 years. We use to be really romantic, holding

hands, lovey dovey. But here recently we have gotten stuck in a routine. We hardly are intimate.

We hardly kiss. We spend time together but it is so cold and non affectionate. I am not happy with

how things are going but what can I do to help this marriage not die. Frustrated

Dear Frustrated,

I applaud you for staying married for 20 years. Sometimes marriages can go a little

unappreciated. You u and your hubby need to find your ways back to the spark that brought you to

together in the first place. You both need to rekindle your romance. You will need to work at it

every day. Find ways to be extra sweet to each other. Do things to break the routine in your life. Do

things that you don’t normally do be more spontaneous. We wish you much success in your

marriage. Hope you have another 60 more.

Dear Dr Jan,

What is a single mother to do? I have two young sons but I don’t have any help with them. Their

father is incarcerated so I do not have any help from him or his family. I should not have to go to

the system for help. I work every day but it seems to be getting worse and worse. I am so

frustrated that I have even thought of giving my children up for adoption. I am at the end of my

rope. Please help me? End of Rope

Dear End of Rope,

Please seek some assistance from the town that you live in. If you belong to a local church

please speak with your Pastor or church counselor. You do not have to feel so alone in your

situation. Speak to the social worker at your son’s school for direction to receive assistance. You

are entitled to receive assistance when you are in need.

Anse Chastanet has a buoyed off

snorkeling area called Fairy Land

which drops from 20 to 140 feet into a

wall of coral and spectacular

underwater life which is an

underwater photographer's

paradise. You can get equipment

rental and directions at any local dive

shop. On the historical Rabot Estate,

the new Hotel Chocolat is busy

growing and harvesting the best

cocoa for delicious chocolates and

treats.

Two more excellent working

plantations that encourage visitors are

also in this region: Fond Doux Estate,

which includes guest cottages,

restaurant and hiking tours, and

Mourne Coubaril, a reconstructed

18th-century village which provides

visitors with a historical glance into

Creole life. On the road to the Jalousie

Plantation Hotel, be sure to stop at

the Piton Falls. Entrance to this little

paradise is only about $2.00 US. A 10

minute walk through the tropical

gardens leads you to a mineral

waterfall cascading into a refreshing

waist high pool. After you take in the

warm thermal waters of this pool, all

of your aches and pains will melt

away. Be sure to go to the Sulphur

Springs Volcano and take their short

tour of the bubbling sulphur and the

volcano's history. Treat yourself to

some sulphur soap hand made by

locals while you are there, it is great

for aching joints and those who have

arthritis pains.

Enjoy southern St Lucia, there is so

much rich culture and beautiful

scenery, there isn't enough time to

see all the waterfalls, snorkel all the

coves or hike all the trails that

abound. Plan to go back, really soon.

Movie Reviews by CJ Ok here goes I was really impressed by all the movies that

have been released this season there is something for

everyone. On today's list we have my most liked of all the

ones I've seen The Help which was absolutely heart

warming and real. I know that when we watch this movie

we don't want to associate it with scenarios that may have

actually taken place in the late 1950's to late 60's. The

Help hits so close to home for the African American public

because the stories told in the movie we've heard our

grandparents and for some of us our parents retail. For

some of us we are inspired to change the world and all it

takes is for just one of us to reach deep within and grab

hold to our faith and the courage God gives us to say I'm

going to be the one that takes a stand. I loved this movie

and I encourage everyone to go and see it.

Also on today's list is Conan the Barbarian. I must say this

one was against my better judgment however I was

intrigued by the eye candy Jason Momoa. I didn't care so

much for the plot because it was so typical and

unimaginative however I did appreciate his candor and

rude but gentlemen like qualities. I wanted more depth

leading up to the ultimate revenge he was granted for the

horrible wrong done to him. Maybe next time ok movie

however I would wait for the red box debut.

18

Page 19: What Every Fat Girl Wants September Issue

Next on the list is Columbiana. Zoe

Saldana is not new to the movie

industry although she is definitely

making a name for herself, we

know her from movies such as

Guess Who, Takers, and Avatar. In

those movies she gave us the best

of her as always by defying the

typical girl next door role and

completely gives us her character.

The saying goes Hell hath no fury

like a woman scorn and she is

definitely a woman scorn. She is

all in and gives movie goers a side

of her we did not know she was

capable of. Never underestimate

the power of a woman. This movie

was action packed and filled with

emotion that envelopes the viewer.

It was spectacular and I am on

the edge of my seat while

awaiting her next film. I

recommend this film for anyone

who wants to see justice fulfilled,

street style.

Determine Your Skin Tone

1 Decide which season most accurately

describes your complexion. People - and

skin tones - can be divided into

"seasons," depending on their skin tone.

2 "Winter" complexions have blue or

pink undertones. Skin can be pale

white, yellowish-olive, or dark. Winter

people are generally brunettes, with

deeply colored eyes. Many Asians and

African Americans fall into this category.

3 "Summer" complexions, like winter

complexions, have blue or pink

undertones. Skin is pale and pink.

Summers are often natural blondes or

brunettes with pale eyes.

4 "Autumn": Autumn complexions

have golden undertones. Many redheads

and brunettes with golden brown eyes

fall into this category.

5 "Spring": Spring complexions have

golden undertones and are usually

creamy white or peach. Spring people

generally have straw-colored or

strawberry red freckles, rosy cheeks,

and blue or green eyes.

Instructions

Things You'll Need

3" x 5" gold foil ,

3" x 5" silver foil

White paper

1 Gently wash your face with a

mild, nonabrasive soap and pat

dry. Do not apply toner

moisturizer or makeup yet.

Wait for 10 to 15 minutes.

2 Choose a large mirror with

natural or nonfluorescent light to

conduct your skin-tone tests.

20

What is Your Skin Tone??

Page 21: What Every Fat Girl Wants September Issue

21

3 Hold a plain white piece of

paper next to your face. A

"warm" skin tone will have

golden or yellow undertones

next to the paper and a "cool"

skin tone will look rosy or pink

with blue undertones.

4 Take turns holding each

color of foil next to your

face. One of the colors will

reflect a glow to your skin ;

the other will make your

skin tone look ashen or

gray. If the gold foil suits

you better, you have a

warm skin tone. If silver

favors you more, you are a

cool skin tone.

Choose Clothes to Flatter Your

Skin Tone

1 "Winter": Winters should wear

colors that are sharp, stark and clear.

White, black, navy blue, red and

shocking pink all go well with winter

complexions. For lighter colors, wear

icy tones rather than pastels. Avoid

subdued tones like beige, orange and

gold.

2 "Summer": Summers should

choose pastels and soft neutrals with

rose and blue undertones. Lavender,

plum, rose-brown and soft blue suit

summers well while black and orange

do not.

3 "Autumn": Autumns should select

colors with golden undertones, like

camel, beige, orange, gold and dark

brown. Avoid colors with blue tones,

like navy.

4 "Spring": Springs can wear warm

colors like camel, peach, golden

yellow and golden brown. Avoid dark,

dull colors
