WELCOME TO THE ONLINE APPLICATION FOR THE MELLON/ACLS SCHOLARS &SOCIETY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM.
The Mellon/ACLS Scholars & Society program offers opportunities for tenured humanitiesfaculty in PhD-granting departments or programs in the United States to engage significantsocietal questions in their research, serve as ambassadors for humanities scholarshipbeyond the academy, and deepen their support for doctoral curricular innovation on theircampuses.
Inspired by the Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows program, which demonstrates the broad valueof doctoral education by placing recent humanities PhDs in nonprofit and governmentorganizations, the Scholars & Society program allows faculty who teach and advise doctoralstudents to pursue research projects while in residence at a US-based cultural, media,government, policy, or community organization of their choice. Fellows and their colleaguesat host institutions are expected to create a mutually beneficial partnership in which theycollaborate, interact, and learn about each other’s work, motivating questions, methods,and practices.
The goal of the fellowship year should be to conduct a major research project in thehumanities or humanistic social sciences that treats a significant issue or grand challenge insociety—such as democratic governance; technological change; racism and inequality;climate change; economic exclusion; or migration and immigration, to name a fewpossibilities. The program supports projects at all stages of development, and welcomesapplications that propose to deepen or expand existing research projects as well as thosethat propose new projects. While projects should be informed by present-day issues in thepublic sphere, they need not be contemporary in focus. Indeed, it is assumed that theinsights yielded by humanities research, broadly considered, can inform work oncontemporary challenges.
Fellows also are required to participate in two workshops over the course of the fellowshipyear—the first, in the fall, is designed to help fellows refine their projects and buildconnections with scholars and institutions engaged in public scholarship and innovation indoctoral education; the second, in the spring, will offer a chance for fellows to reflect ontheir experiences and plan programming for the year following the fellowship.
In the 2018-19 competition year, ACLS will award up to 12 Scholars & Society Fellowshipsfor a nine-month term during the 2019-20 academic year. Each fellowship carries a stipendof $75,000, plus funds of up to $6,000 for research, travel/optional relocation, and relatedproject costs. ACLS also will cover the costs of fellows’ attendance at the workshops.Fellows must commit themselves to relocating (if necessary) in order to be in residence forthe entire nine-month tenure of the fellowship. The award also carries $10,000 in supportfor each fellow’s host organization, and provides additional funding to sponsor on-campusand off-campus programming in the year following the fellowship. The programming, whichmay take a variety of forms, should draw on connections developed during the fellowshipyear and should be designed to foster greater understanding of the value of humanitiesscholarship and doctoral education beyond the academy. Stipends, research and projectcosts, and programming budgets will be paid to fellows directly or through theiruniversities.
Before beginning your application, you will be asked several questions designed todetermine preliminary eligibility for this program. Once you have answered these basiceligibility questions, please read all instructions, including those in the REFERENCE LETTERSand PROPOSAL UPLOAD sections, before beginning to fill out the application form.

Objectives
To support humanities research that is engaged with societal questions andinformed by dialogues taking place outside of the academy;To promote the wide circulation of humanities research and understanding of thequestions and methods that animate humanities scholarship;To valorize publicly engaged scholarship and make it more visible at universitieswith doctoral programs in the humanities;To equip humanities faculty with a greater understanding of how doctoral educationprepares PhDs for a range of careers in society.
Eligibility Applicants must:
be employed in tenured positions in PhD-granting departments or programs at auniversity in the United States, remaining so for the duration of the fellowship. UScitizenship or permanent residency is not required. (See FAQ for details.)commit to a nine-month residency off campus and at the non-academic institutionthat they have proposed.commit to participate in person in two multi-day workshops (in the early fall andlate spring) during the fellowship year.
Residency Guidelines The goals of the residency are to promote research inflected by work and conversations
beyond the academy, and to provide humanities faculty with a greater understanding of thevalue of humanities perspectives, capacities, and questions to a range of social issues. Thefellowships are predicated on thoughtful, mutually beneficial collaborations between fellowsand partner sites, and ACLS expects that both fellows and hosts will have much to gainfrom the exchange. Eligible residential sites include cultural, policy, media, government,service, and community organizations. Fellows need not relocate to take up a residency—indeed, research and residencies that foster local partnerships between universities andorganizations in their communities are welcome—but the primary criterion for selecting ahost site should be its suitability for advancing an applicant’s project.
The program welcomes a range of approaches to collaboration with the host site. As part ofthe application process, applicants must describe, in the proposal narrative, how theproject and residency alike will be beneficial to both fellow and host. Applicants also mustsecure a separate statement of support from the proposed host organization that outlinestheir interest in hosting the fellow and confirms that the fellow will be provided withworkspace, administrative support and other resources, as well as opportunities toparticipate in the organization’s work during the residency.
ACLS will provide $10,000 to host institutions to defray the costs of providing the fellowwith the resources and opportunities outlined above. Fellows are expected to work full timeon their projects and to participate in the organizational life of their host sites. ACLS alsoencourages fellows and host sites to consider how best to build and deepen theirpartnerships during the fellowship year and beyond, and the research and project fundsprovided by the fellowship may be used toward these ends.
Project Schedule Proposals should include a plan of work to be carried out during the fellowship year, and
describe any preliminary work already completed. Applicants who are selected for afellowship will be required to secure assurance from their home institutions before theaward is finalized that the institution is prepared to accommodate and support on-campusprogramming in the year following the fellowship.

Evaluation Criteria Peer reviewers in this program are asked to evaluate all eligible proposals according to the
following criteria:
1. The potential of the project to advance the field of study in which it is proposed andto treat effectively issues of public concern.
2. The quality of the proposal with regard to its methodology, framework, andgrounding in the relevant literatures.
3. The feasibility of the project and preparedness of the applicant to undertake it.
4. The rationale for residency at the proposed site and likelihood that the collaborationwith colleagues at the host institution will increase the applicant's ability to carry theproject forward.
5. The potential of the applicant’s work to engage with and make an impact onaudiences beyond the academy.
Successful applicants who accept a Mellon/ACLS Scholars & Society Fellowship will bewithdrawn from other ACLS competitions.

INSTRUCTIONS
You may make as many visits to your application as you wish, and revise anyinformation in your application until it has been submitted. In order to be considered,your application must be complete and in SUBMITTED status at 9 pm, EasternDaylight Time, October 24, 2018. You should complete the REFERENCELETTERS section as soon as possible since your letter writers will also haveuntil the application deadline (October 24) to submit their letters.
This application consists of three parts: the application form itself, the uploadeddocuments (see PROPOSAL UPLOAD), and reference letters (see REFERENCELETTERS).
BEFORE BEGINNING the application form, please read the Instructions regardingthe PROPOSAL UPLOAD and the REFERENCE LETTERS, as well as the followingtechnical instructions.
A. How to SAVE and SUBMIT your data.
1. Do not use your browser's "BACK" or "FORWARD" buttons for navigation.Instead, use the navigation links and/or arrows provided on each applicationscreen.
2. You must SAVE each time you leave a screen. If you do not click onSAVE, anything entered since you last hit SAVE on that screen will be lost.(Any work from a previous session will be retained, but any new entries willbe lost.) The SAVE button is on the bottom of your screen.
3. You may work on your application in as many sessions as you wish, and thestatus of your application will be IN PROCESS until you submit it. Once youare satisfied that your application is complete, you must go to the SUBMITAPPLICATION screen and select SUBMIT APPLICATION. Once yourapplication has been SUBMITTED, it cannot revert to IN PROCESS status.
4. When you have completed your application, pause to check it one last time.We strongly suggest that you print and read your application beforesubmitting it, so that you can be sure there are no further revisions youwish to make. Your print copy should include your uploaded document.
5. Your application status bar must show SUBMITTED at 9 pm, EasternDaylight Time, October 24, 2018 in order for it to be considered. ACLS willtake no responsibility for applications that are not in SUBMITTED status atthe deadline. Once your application has been SUBMITTED, even if itwas submitted before the final deadline, no changes will bepermitted.
6. We strongly urge you to print out and save a copy of the final version ofyour SUBMITTED application. Your print copy should include your uploadeddocument. You can print your application until January 15, 2019.
B. How to enter data.
1. You may begin completing the application at any section.
2. What you type into the form is exactly what will be seen by our reviewers.Therefore, please fill out the form carefully, paying attention to spelling,punctuation, grammar, and case. (For instance, do not use all caps.)

4. Dates should always be entered in the format mm/yyyy or mm/dd/yyyywhere indicated. Where an entry continues into the present, please simplyleave the ending date blank (mm/yyyy - [blank]).
5. Begin typing all answers at the extreme left hand side of the response areaor box; do not leave a space or indent at the beginning of your answer.
6. In all dollar amount fields, use only digits. Please do not use the dollar signor commas.

REFERENCE LETTERS OFA HELP
PLEASE NOTE: You MUST ENTER YOUR REFEREES on the Reference Letters page BEFOREthey can log in to use the online references system. Please do not ask them to access thesystem until you have done this. Once you have entered the information and clicked the"send email" button, an email will be automatically generated with appropriate instructions tothe referee.
Two letters of reference and one statement of support from the proposed hostorganization are required.
1. REFERENCE LETTERS. We suggest that you secure as referees scholars competent tojudge both the present research proposal and your past scholarship; further, that not morethan one referee be affiliated with your own institution. ACLS does not accept referenceletters from dossier services, such as Interfolio or university-based services. Why?
For your information, referees are asked to comment on the applicant as a scholar andprofessional, and on the degree to which the specific proposal to ACLS represents a genuinelyambitious, distinguished, and long-term contribution to humanistic scholarship and has thepotential to treat effectively an issue of public concern.
2. STATEMENT OF SUPPORT from the proposed site of residency. A statement of support isrequired to confirm the provision of resources required for a successful residency.
This form asks the relevant official to outline their interest in hosting their fellow and confirmthat the organization will provide appropriate resources for the fellow to advance his/herproject and be an active member of the community, including but not limited to: workspace,administrative support and other resources, and opportunities to participate in theorganization's work during the residency.
Letters of reference and the statement of support must be submitted online. It isyour responsibility to convey information about your proposal to your referees. After yourreferees have agreed to write on your behalf:
Tell your referees to expect an email from ACLS.Make absolutely certain you have the correct email address for each referee.Enter each referee's name and email address by clicking on the "Add Referee" link atthe bottom of this page. Please capitalize the name properly.Once you have entered the information and clicked the "send email" button, an emailwill be automatically generated with appropriate instructions to the referee.It is not necessary to enter all referees at the same time. You can return to this screenat any time to enter referees.Your referees will not receive an email to begin this process until you have entered theinformation and clicked the "send email" button.
No more than two letters of reference and one statement of support will beaccepted.
Enter only the required number of referees. It is possible to enter additional referees,but you should do this only if you learn that a referee is unable to complete thepromised letter.The first two letters and first statement of support submitted will be theletters on file in support of your application. Once the maximum number beensubmitted, another referee attempting to submit a letter for you will be preventedfrom doing so. Be careful not to put anyone in this situation.

If you learn that your referee did not receive an email with instructions, check the email address and then enter the information again using the "Add Referee" link below to have the email sent again. (You will not be able to enter the information again, however, if the referee has begun your letter.)
Letters of reference and the statement of support are due by the application deadline, October 24, 2018. It is your responsibility to check online to see whether letters have been submitted. The system will continue to accept letters after the deadline and will add them to your application at the earliest possible time, though we cannot guarantee that they will accompany your application through our entire review process.
You may wish to print this page so that you have this information after the application deadline. This page will not be included as part of your view/print application.

PROPOSAL UPLOAD OFA HELP
To complete your application package, in addition to the application form, you must uploadthe following items: 1) a proposal, 2) a bibliography, 3) a publications list, 4) a projecttimeline, and 5) a description of efforts by applicant's department or institution to supportdiverse careers for doctoral students. All five items should be collated to upload as onecontinuous document.
1) PROPOSAL:
In preparing this material, please keep in mind that the selection committee is multi-disciplinary, composed of senior scholars from a broad range of fields in thehumanities and humanistic social sciences who have track records of publicengagement and involvement in their institutions' humanities communities.
Content: A concise statement describing your research project is required. Thenarrative statement must include the following sections: research aims andplanned outcomes; a survey of the field that outlines how the proposedproject articulates with current approaches to publicly engaged humanitiesscholarship; necessary skills, training, and logistical support; and arationale for residency that includes a reflection on how the project andresidency alike will be mutually beneficial for the fellow and host organization.Please title your proposal in a brief, descriptive way and label sections of yournarrative as appropriate to assist readers.
The proposal must not exceed seven double-spaced pages in TimesNew Roman 11-point font. You may, however, include up to threeadditional pages of images, musical scores, or other similar supportingnon-text materials.
2) BIBLIOGRAPHY:
The bibliography should provide an overview of essential references for your project,and should balance the various sorts of key materials being used.
The bibliography must not exceed two pages, and should be double-spaced between entries.
3) PUBLICATIONS LIST:
This should be a list of your representative publications and should include titles, datesof publication, names of publishers or journals, and numbers of pages.
Your publications list must not exceed two pages, and may be inwhatever format you normally keep it.
4) PROJECT TIMELINE:
A project timeline providing a coherent plan for the development and execution of theproject, including a description of tasks to be accomplished during the fellowshipperiod. This plan should reflect a thoughtful approach to the applicant's collaborationwith the host organization.
The project timeline must not exceed one double-spaced page.

5) DESCRIPTION OF CAREER DIVERSITY EFFORTS:
A description of current or recent efforts at the applicant's institution to supportdiverse career paths for doctoral students in the humanities, such as curricular reform,internships and other experience building activities, or career development workshops.Please identify the campus unit(s) responsible for any efforts listed in this section.
The description must not exceed one double-spaced page.
Documents must adhere to the page limits and formatting requirements to bereviewed.
6) DOCUMENT SPECIFICATIONS:
All five items must be uploaded as one continuous document.Margins must be at least one inch on all sides.Use Times New Roman 11-point font for all uploaded documents.There is a 3 MB limit on the size of your upload. This means that the total sizeof the upload, including any graphics or supplementary materials, cannotexceed 3 MB.Your application will be converted to Portable Document Format (.pdf). Keepformatting simple to avoid problems in the converted document.If your proposal includes foreign characters, please view it after uploading to besure these characters convert properly. If not, you may have to convert yourdocument to .pdf and upload again to resolve formatting problems.Use the header/footer function to number pages. (Do not type the numbersdirectly into each page of your document text.) You may number pagesconsecutively throughout the entire document, or you may number thedifferent sections separately. (Page numbers are most helpful on the proposal,so you may omit them on the other items if you wish.)If you have difficulty with your upload, consult the FAQ/technical supportbefore contacting OFA HELP.
7) INSTRUCTIONS FOR UPLOADING YOUR DOCUMENTS:
Your items should be collated in this order—proposal, bibliography, publication list,timeline, description of career diversity efforts—and submitted as one file.
Files will be accepted in the following formats ONLY: Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx), WordPerfect Version 5. or later (.wpd), Text only (.txt),
or Adobe Portable Document Format (.pdf). Your file MUST include theappropriate extension (e.g., ".doc"); if you are on a Mac, you will need to enter theextension as part of the file name.
The button below will allow you to upload your document. You will be able to browseyour computer system to select the file to be uploaded. When you have completed theupload, your file name should appear under "FILE UPLOAD STATUS" below as a bluelink. You can confirm that the file has uploaded successfully by clicking on the blue linkand viewing your file. Sometimes the process takes a little time: if your file name doesnot appear as a blue link, refresh the screen using the refresh button in your browsertool bar, or simply leave this screen and come back to it.
As long as your application is still "In Process," you can upload revised versions ofyour document by simply repeating the upload process and selecting the new/revisedversion. (This may have the same file name or a new file name.) When you click on"Upload File" the revised version will be recorded and the old version erased.
After uploading, please check your file to be sure it has uploadedsuccessfully.
