What goes into a bottle of Yakult?

Lactobacillus casei Shirota,

the strain of bacteria unique

to Yakult, scientifically

proven to reach the gut alive.

Over 80 years of scientific research.

Worldwide trust – over 28

million Yakult products are

consumed every day.

No fat,no gluten, no artificial colours.

And of course 6.5 billion unique bacteria!

Over 80 Over 80

Worldwide

proven to reach the gut alive.

Yakult was developed in 1935 by the scientist Dr Minoru Shirota. And although our bottle may be

small, we have a big story to tell…

That was then...

Dr Shirota spent many years investigating lactic

acid bacteria, trying to find a strain that would be

robust enough to survive through the intestines.

After much research, in 1930 he discovered

such a strain, now known as Lactobacilluscasei Shirota, and in 1935 used this to make

a fermented milk drink – resulting in the first

ever bottle of Yakult!

This is now:

Fast forward over 75 years, and

today 28 million Yakult products are

consumed every day in 32 countries

around the world. Yet our core

product has changed very little –

today’s Yakult still contains the very

same Lactobacillus casei Shirota

strain that was discovered

by Dr Shirota all those years ago.

Each little bottle contains at least

6.5 billion of these special little

bacteria that are scientifically

proven to reach the gut alive.

And that includes Yakult Light,

the one with the blue top, which

has fewer calories.

Did you know?

Dr Shirota was keen that people all around the

world would enjoy his product, which is why

he used the universal language of Esperanto

to name his new drink.

Yakult means ‘yoghurt’-although Yakult is really

a fermented milk drink not a yoghurt

A science-based company

Science has always been at the core of our

product and at the heart of everything we do.

Dr Shirota himself established Japan’s Yakult

Central Institute for Microbiological Research

in 1955 – and today scientists at this renowned

institute and the company’s European research

centre, continue to investigate the effects of

the Lactobacillus casei Shirota strain.

How often should I drink Yakult? We suggest one bottle every day. If you’d like a second bottle

that’s fine - however, Yakult isn’t meant to be a thirst-quencher.

Does Yakult contain any colourings? No - Yakult’s colour is natural and due to the process of

caramelisation, which happens naturally when milk is heated. As part of its production process, the milk in Yakult

is heat-treated before it is fermented.

How should Istore Yakult?

Yakult must be refrigerated.Bottles can be kept out of the

fridge for a short time (e.g. bringing Yakult home from the shops).

Does Yakultcontain

flavourings?Yakult contains citrus fruit

and vanilla flavourings.

Does Yakult contain any colourings?

What is the difference betweenthe red and the blue bottles?

Both have the same flavour and quantity of bacteria. Yakult Light (blue) contains the sweetener sucralose, so has less sugar and

fewer calories than the original Yakult (red).
